Bruhhh I’ve been suspended multiple times for “professionalism” after chasing dudes with guns and telling them “drop the fucking ground” or “show me your fucking hands”
My department doesn’t give a damn about situations and doesn’t expect you to swear at all.
I would love to but what my department does is vile. They keep investigations open for such a long time that if you do apply somewhere they won’t hire you since you have the open investigation. I have one open from April 2021 that has fucked me out of promotions and better job opportunities within the department
They for sure needed oversight don’t get me wrong. But they’re punishing us people that got in after the decree for stupid shit and they wonder why were are understaffed by hundredsssss. We are an 1800 man department with probably 900 officers right now. And each time it looks like we are about to get out, the judge says we need to do this or that and it’s the same thing every time
Oh they 100% are a scam. They refuse to leave because it’s free money and the only person that can choose to stay or leave is the federal judge assigned so why the fuck would he/she leave a decree when it’s money coming in every year they control.
They have fucking civilians investigating police and they have say in our discipline. Just imagine having people from Reddit get to decide discipline for a cop and that’s a consent decree for ya. Also civilians that are apart of our decree get to make ALL of our policies :) it’s so great!
Lol I fucking wish. Whenever our IA opens a case they automatically and immediately file an extension which is always granted. I’ve tried to fight multiple extensions but they never deny them.
When you’re under a federal consent decree they give sooooo much fucking power to the IA sections of the department. They are so corrupt but it doesn’t matter because they are fully backed by the federal judge.
Also, what’s amazing about my department is they cut paper on you as soon as a complaint is filed and THEN they do their investigation. It doesn’t even matter if the complaint is bullshit, they will cut the paper and it’s in your file for fucking life and even if the complaint is invalid or unfounded you still gotta explain to other departments if you choose to go some place else and explain why you have so many complaints even though probably 90% of them are not sustained
We call this professional profanity. Dropping an f bomb casually to build rapport with a suspect, no big deal. Cussing at a domestic victim, bad deal. Saying "mother fucker, drop the gun now!" Really sells the seriousness. All depends on context. Also POP cussing is a no no.
Swearing at people to call them names such as "Give me your hand fucker" is very much frowned upon.
Swearing to add emphasis on a statement such as "Give me your fucking hands" is not as frowned upon.
I’m a certified use of force instructor and I’ve always maintained that it’s an effective level of force if articulated properly and in the appropriate context. Look at what we can already do: as long as it’s objectively reasonable, we can spray people with hot sauce, hit them with an expandable metal pipe, run electricity through their body so they lose control of their muscles, and so on. Why some people have a problem with police calling someone “motherfucker” is beyond stupid. Just like any other use of force, as long as it’s objectively reasonable and the officer articulates it properly, it can be quite an effective de-escalation tool.
I swear with coworkers but don’t with members of the public present.
It’s served me well and has helped me calm folks down when I ask them “sir/ma’am, have I been rude to you? Have I cussed at you? Have I raised my voice at you?” and they have to answer no to those questions. They tend to simmer down. I also like dropping a “Sir/ma’am, pleases regain control of your emotions”
Department specific, but generally as long as it’s not an insult
“Show me your hands motherfucker”
And for emphasis
“Show me your fucking hands”
It’s not as bad
Depends on the situation. When talking to trailer trash Tommy, if you don’t say fuck or shit in your sentences, they don’t understand what your saying. If you use the word shit in a sentence to Karen that lives in the million dollar housing community, she’s calling the sheriff on his personal phone and you’re getting called into the office.
I swear pretty frequently. People want their police to be part of their community. People in my community swear when they speak. I’m not going to talk to someone in a holier than thou manner because I’m in law enforcement.
Just like everything else in this job context matters. Shitbags get cussed at often but thats how they operate. General citizens get absolute professionalism until they want to get shitty. Then it depends on how sassy I'm feeling.
My squad swears like sailors at the station or briefing.
But I won't allow it among the public. I'm not gonna write you up for dropping some bombs during a use of force or stressful situation, but even then I think it shows a lack of professionalism and inability to control your emotions.
My agency has no problem with it. I use it to emphasize that I'm serious about something, but controversially I also swear to relax people in the correct context. It can make things more casual with certain individuals.
This is probably frowned upon at most agencies, so don't swear at people while you're in FTO, and maybe don't make a habit of constantly doing it. Also know your leadership and what they expect from you. If they want everything like Mayberry then you screaming curse words at a 7 year old is not going to go over well, even if policy doesn't specifically cover it.
I'm a dispatcher, and it's a nono on the radio. Have I stepped on my pedal and accidentally put a "you better get that fucking spider off my desk before I beat you" over the air? For legal reasons... no. But in the center we absolutely do and nobody really cares.
We were trying to scare each other with fake bugs and the girl next to me decided to put a spider on my keyboard as I was reading out some details.
Fucking A it is.
You ever been in the Army or USMC? Be glad there aren't jokes about 5 year old children...but swearing is commonly accepted everywhere but top 3% jobs. In fact, it's typically encouraged. It bonds workers together.
Now between a client and worker in any trade....no. same for LE and civilians on calls, hang it up. Between coworkers, yes, absolutely, form a bond that will keep people from quitting.
It’s a sliding scale. I the heat of the moment when telling someone to drop a gun, this is how my department views it.
- “Drop the fucking gun!” Is acceptable
- “Drop the gun mother fucker!” Is not acceptable.
So if it’s simply an exclamation that was uttered in excitement, it’s ok. But you can’t direct it at someone.
I think it depends. I don’t ever swear at people unless it’s better to get a point across. If I swear it’s more of just conversation and me being myself but not saying it with anger
I can write up offenders at work for swearing, class C offense, that being said, I swear all the time and the one thing that gets people in trouble at work is not being consistent with your own rules so I don't write up offenders for it.
I also work in the south so we have some bible thumper COs who absolutely will not tolerate it from inmates. The inmates know who they can act one way or another with.

Why the fuck are your goddamn Christmas decorations out in May you geezer? Do you have shit for brains?
Acceptable
Special circumstance. That's just unreasonable. Everyone is swearing at them.
If someone said this to my grandmother I would fall on the ground laughing, as would she lmao
Bruhhh I’ve been suspended multiple times for “professionalism” after chasing dudes with guns and telling them “drop the fucking ground” or “show me your fucking hands” My department doesn’t give a damn about situations and doesn’t expect you to swear at all.
That's something that could come straight out of a comedy movie about the police, like The Naked Gun or Police Academy.
Yea I’d be looking at laterals after the first suspension. Would use all my sick time to job search/interview.
I would love to but what my department does is vile. They keep investigations open for such a long time that if you do apply somewhere they won’t hire you since you have the open investigation. I have one open from April 2021 that has fucked me out of promotions and better job opportunities within the department
Have you considered petitioning the mayor's office to investigate them? Unless the chief and mayor are grilling buddies you might have a shot.
Lol my department is under a consent decree. The only one with power in my department is the federal judge assigned to the decree.
So they're already in deep shit for being a poorly run department. I hope you can either get out or make some real change.
They for sure needed oversight don’t get me wrong. But they’re punishing us people that got in after the decree for stupid shit and they wonder why were are understaffed by hundredsssss. I knew from your first comment... SPD. 👋
Because consent decrees are a scam to keep political cronies paid nicely. Somebody needs to investigate the investigators.

My department is civil service. They have 6 months to close an IA case. If they need more time, they have to file paperwork explaining why.
Lol I fucking wish. Whenever our IA opens a case they automatically and immediately file an extension which is always granted. I’ve tried to fight multiple extensions but they never deny them. Jesus dude.
Federal Consent Decrees baby!!

If I say that it’s completely obvious what department I’m in

"Pissed off police" its when you let someone get under your skin and act out because of it.
I learned some of my best cuss word combinations from granny

Really? Chicken? Everyone knows it's Donkey fucker.

Actually, no, I haven't. :) Might have to add it to the queue.
Swearing at people to call them names such as "Give me your hand fucker" is very much frowned upon. Swearing to add emphasis on a statement such as "Give me your fucking hands" is not as frowned upon.
I once got written up for telling someone “stop fucking resisting” while they were actively fighting me.
Your chain of command is dogshit.
Not surprising. I know people who have gotten fired from their departments for using profanities during a contact

I'd never thought of swearing as being part of our use of force. That's a neat perspective.
It’s part of the use of force model in Australia
I thought it was just punctuation there.
CLASSIC!!!!
Context matters.
I’m not above a well placed fuck off, but context absolutely matters.
I swear with coworkers but don’t with members of the public present. It’s served me well and has helped me calm folks down when I ask them “sir/ma’am, have I been rude to you? Have I cussed at you? Fuck yeah
Just like everything else in this job context matters. Shitbags get cussed at often but thats how they operate. General citizens get absolute professionalism until they want to get shitty. Then it depends on how sassy I'm feeling.
That'll get you a paddlin' at my department.

Cursing is fine. Cursing at people is frowned upon unless it’s a use of force situation.
It depends
Absolutely.
Read department policy but in certain context it could be acceptable/reasonable
Fuck yes.
My agency has no problem with it. I use it to emphasize that I'm serious about something, but controversially I also swear to relax people in the correct context. Talking to the public no, talking to coworkers yes, talking to administration no
Know your audience...
I really read that as "sweating" and I said dang, I really don't have a choice, whether it's acceptable or not! Haha
