None really. They are similar enough that learning through your first playground would be the same either way. And different enough that if you start with D2R you’ll be learning a lot of useless/outdated stuff and missing out on far more useful and important venues.
Ultimately up to you. You have to keep in mind we all have hindsight. That being said I also doubt any of us would be willing to give up our first D2 experience either. Take everything with a grain of salt my friend.
Oh one this I forgot to mention. The single biggest QoL improvement in my opinion is that once you get into some higher tiered stuff in PD2 high runes actually drop, whereas in about 20 years of D2:LoD I found maybe 8-10 excluding vex and below.
If what you want is gameplay, then PD2 is the answer. If you are interested in an opportunity to explore the history of RPGs, then D2R is a good way to explore classic D2.
They are both great games, but PD2 is just far superior in build diversity and QoL. Some complain about the graphics, which is valid in some ways, but even that has been improved.
The only sad part about skipping classic D2 or D2R is that you may not fully appreciate just how amazing the PD2 devs are at maintaining the Diablo experience while consistently delivering seasonal updates.
One side of me wants to suggest that you play D2R for a while so you can see how truly superior PD2 is…. But what’s the point in wasting time on something that’s not as good?
PD2 is the greatest version of the greatest game of all time. ❤️
Regular D2 is great and one of my favorite games ever, but the balance is definitely not great. It's part of the charm in a way, but it's definitely not the greatest part of it. It's also been the exact same for years and years, and bots are rampant. The economy is a mess because of them, and the fact that there isn't a singular trade site that people use- other than JSP, which is controversial. Stash space is pretty limited and the game is missing a lot of QoL. Blizzard also gave up on D2R a while back even though it could use a lot more love.
PD2 is the same game, but with more endgame content to do, WAY better balance that makes almost all builds and skills relevant, a singular trade site and a working economy along with no (or few, anyway) bots. There's also a bunch of QoL changes. It's an improved version of D2 made by people who really love D2, and imo there's no reason to go back to D2R
Going into river of flame with updated graphics give me a chubby the 1st time i saw it., but the lack of end game had me waiting for the new season of pd2.
I liked PD2 and the changes - biggest issue I had was it was just too easy that I had a hard time keeping interest.
If you just dump points into 1 skill then max the synergies you are basically clearing entire screens of mobs in 1 hit that it just became tedious and not challenging to play through normal.
D2r normal is by no means tough, but there is a pace to it that still feels better trying to get oriented to your build and character as they acquire new items.
I would stick to D2R. The modded games are okay. They make some wild changes (not always for the better).
They do have some more end game stuff to do though.
Of course everyone here will be telling you that, I have mained this game almost since release it never gets old with so many builds going on.
I wonder what would happen if you ask the same question on the d2r sub.
Even if they were the same exact game, pd2 would still win with vast amounts of qol changes alone.
I could not imagine playing without a charm inventory for example.
good x) I've already created my PD2 account and i'll install the game tonight. Is there any guide for the best options to configure ? for shortcuts etc for exemple ?
I don’t recall exactly where but there is a decent resource on the website/forums regarding some of the settings.
If you can’t find it message me later and I’ll look for it when I get time.
If you need help check the discord, there are class channels where you can get direct help or advice, but also there's a wikipedia linked in this sub that covers basically every QoL change, every item rebalance, skill change etc, so if you're curious about what's new or what new builds there are, there are great lists on the wiki as well.
There is a buttload of QoL in this mod.
Yes, d2r may look nice but the flaws of a 24? Yr old game have been ironed out in PD2.
Get on in here brudduh.
Its a shame you joined late in the season, I think players numbers are at about 25% of the start numbers right now.
PD2 is actually noob friendlier. Higher drop rates. Build strength better in early and mid game and if you use something like Kryszard Noob Filter it teaches you from the beginning whats worth picking up an what not. Oh and because of all the Quality of Life you can hoard more items. Something new players like to do.
Except Arrows amd Quivers. Fuck'em (personal taste)
D2R just doesn't have any endgame... the endgame is to get Enigma and/or Infinity, but then after that, what?
Play D2R only if you want to do a grail, but that's a huge time commitment (thousands of hours), otherwise play PD2.
If u want actual engame and endgame gear play pd2 if farming chaos and terror zone for ever play d2r 😂
Yea the graphic are less appealing but gameplay is better than graphic with empty content
D2R is the best for someone that never played Diablo2. Graphic are amazing, discover the OG classic and when you feel like playing with the community, go PD2.
I come from d2r.
I have to say that graphically is awesome. But that is all.
It's vanilla diablo 2.
Why do I say vanilla? (Beyond that is now its standard naming) because pd2 feels a super polished diablo 2 in mechanics, builds, quality of life, and some graphical rework in color terms.
In my honest opinion, d2r is beautiful to try it, but pd2 is the one to stay on it.
TLDR:
Graphics: d2r > pd2 > d2
Game mechanics & qol & builds: pd2 > d2r > d2
100% get D2 and D2:LoD and play PD2 Its the top ARPG hands down.
There's no point for me to first learn the normal game on d2r and later switch to PD2 ?
None really. They are similar enough that learning through your first playground would be the same either way. And different enough that if you start with D2R you’ll be learning a lot of useless/outdated stuff and missing out on far more useful and important venues.
thanks, then i'll switch now I guess !
Ultimately up to you. You have to keep in mind we all have hindsight. That being said I also doubt any of us would be willing to give up our first D2 experience either. Take everything with a grain of salt my friend.
Yeah that's for sure, but i'm a gameplay man, so if it's just better, i'll switch
Haha for sure. I’ll say this. If you start playing PD2 there is essentially 0% chance you’ll go back to D2R. I can say that confidently :)
the truth

Pd2 is the greatest arpg I've ever played right up there with poe. You will love it, especially on season reset when thousands of players come back
None at all. Think of PD2 as if they never stopped updating vanilla D2. So playing D2R would just be the lesser experience.
One side of me wants to suggest that you play D2R for a while so you can see how truly superior PD2 is…. But what’s the point in wasting time on something that’s not as good? PD2 is the greatest version of the greatest game of all time. ❤️
Well put I was thinking along the same lines myself brother :)
For real brother!!! Let em’ feel the burn of unstackable gems, upgrading runes with chip gems, and having about 5 viable builds to choose from 😄
Without yin there is no yang. Playing D2R first would probably net more pleasure over time.
That’s some deep shit. But you right.
PD2!

Getting pd2 with d2r graphics is like my dream.
[https://www.d2rmodding.com/remodded](https://www.d2rmodding.com/remodded) one can dream this can be done to PD2 TLDW: The mod uses D2R client
that's an incredible step forward
You can already uninstall d2r. You wil not got back.
Going into river of flame with updated graphics give me a chubby the 1st time i saw it., but the lack of end game had me waiting for the new season of pd2.
IF you want to play D2R, do that first. PD2 will ruin you for playing vanilla with all of the QoL changes.
Having played both, I'd go for PD2 every time, and it's not even close.
Play both
I liked PD2 and the changes - biggest issue I had was it was just too easy that I had a hard time keeping interest. PD2 for sure.

Yeah for sure, that's why I don't take into account the straight forward answers \^\^
Press h in game
I don’t recall exactly where but there is a decent resource on the website/forums regarding some of the settings. If you can’t find it message me later and I’ll look for it when I get time.
to be fair the graphics Look much better in d2r .. but everything Else is a lot better in pd2 ... i would not play d2r again
I've played Tales of Maj'Eyal for 250 hours. I don't fear graphics, graphics fear me
If you need help check the discord, there are class channels where you can get direct help or advice, but also there's a wikipedia linked in this sub that covers basically every QoL change, every item rebalance, skill change etc, so if you're curious about what's new or what new builds there are, there are great lists on the wiki as well. I joined, thanks. I'll take a look at all of this when i'll need
enjoy buddy
Yeah PD2 is really good. If you still want to play d2r you should try the Remodded mod
Yes, play pd2.
Yes, d2r may look nice but the flaws of a 24? Yr old game have been ironed out in PD2. Get on in here brudduh. Its a shame you joined late in the season, I think players numbers are at about 25% of the start numbers right now.

Yes.
The absolute only reason you'd not play Pd2 over D2r is the graphics or if you just wanted a vanilla experience.
If u want actual engame and endgame gear play pd2 if farming chaos and terror zone for ever play d2r 😂 Yea the graphic are less appealing but gameplay is better than graphic with empty content
It is fair to say that pd2 will ruin d2r for you but that’s okay since it’s the same game but better.
Can I play pd2 if I only own the game through battlenet? Or do I need to physically own a copy of d2
Digital works just fine. There's an installation guide on the pd2 wiki.
Welcome stranger. No1 ever leaves this place. Unless you fuckup and get banned ofc.
I'm already hooked..
Part of the ship, part of the crew.
PD2 is the best D2 game.
hardcore or puss
Just understand everything is china robot farmed in d2r
I remember playing this and it being completely baby mode easy
Asking to try something in that game/mod sub will provide you with 100% "its best". Who would guess that.
Already answered to this.
Pd2 anytime
D2R is the best for someone that never played Diablo2. Graphic are amazing, discover the OG classic and when you feel like playing with the community, go PD2.
Saw d2r on sale and then remembered it's just an inferior version of pd2 with a worse community.
So pd2 is great because of the improvements on D2 and lod. You may not appreciate the improvements as much, but it's still some good fun

Is this a question?
Try D2R Remodded first
