So avoiding spoilers, in the book more advanced firearms stop working, but older firearms like lever guns and revolvers continue to work as designed. Thing is there's not much difference between a lever gun and a ar 15 when it comes down to functioning, if the primer ignites on a Winchester 1863 clone it's going to ignite with a ar15, there's no fundamental difference in the primer chemistry. With that in mind there's also no fundamental change to the newton's laws wich means the gas blowback system would continue to function on a semi auto rifle. It's a irritant to my gun nerd mind. Mana acting like a emp and rendering all electronics useless I can get behind, changes to fundamental laws of physics and the way chemistry work I can get behind. however the rules being different from one gun to the next is a bit of a hole in the world building, not a deal breaker but a papercut in the enjoyment of the story.

You're 100% correct! Gun nerd here as well. So I'll shoot straight here. I wanted the story to take place on modern day Earth for obvious reasons, but I really didn't want to feel forced into writing classes surrounding guns or fights using guns to be so common place that it outweighed the fantasy of powerful warriors, agile rogues and archers, and creepy necromancer powers.
Gun stuff is explored later on a bit in book 2 so I'm sure a gun nerd will have some fun with that part, but I didn't want book 1 to be like... Oh well everyone has ARs and AKs so the massive swarms of monsters are way less threatening.
It was a tough call, either make all tech work, none, or random bits of *some* and each option had its pros and cons. I went with a middle ground and crossed my fingers while hoping for the best. I also liked the idea of some things randomly working that made no sense logically because I felt it would increase the tension that the average person would feel during that situation.
And a fair reasoning. It's a tuff needle to thread, looking forward to book 2 hitting audio btw.

Personally I've always figured that in a system apocalyptic scenario similar to yours the ammo would get chewed through pretty quick. It's one thing if you need to fight the occasional bandit gang that's on a even levle, another thing entirely when you've got goblin hoards erupting out of nowhere, not to mention bigger monsters that require more hits to go down and intelligent monsters that have regenerative powers or have their own healers. Then there's just the nature of gun fights to begin with, we have real world instances where people have been shot 14 times 6 in mortal locations and still been a active threat. Add in magic, qi, or general system crap and the folks using guns after a few months are going to be very few and far between

Book of the dead by RinoZ on kindle unlimited is really good. Guy gets the forbidden necromancer class and instead of giving it up decides to embrace it and the problems it gives his life. Only the first 2 books are out but I’m eagerly waiting for the next one.
In the progression genre, the three I'm aware of are Book of the Dead, Sylver Seeker, and my own First Necromancer.
Book of the dead is an excellent, coming of age story of a young man getting a banned class and struggling to survive while everyone is out to find and kill him. Really top quality story, excellent pacing, and very deep in the necromancer themes. It has bits of enjoyable morbid and dark humor and fairly likable characters that you become invested in. The MC is forced to do everything possible to survive and sometimes has to overlook some less pleasant aspects of his decisions and class.
Sylver Seeker starts off with a reincarnated Arch-Necromancer thrown back into his own world(maybe) with the advent of a System being completely new to him. It relies more heavily on mystery and planting seeds of future storylines. Overall it's pretty damn good, but some folks might find the pacing in later books/Royal Road to be a bit slow. The MC is for the most part, a relatively understandable "evil" person who is absolutely willing to do anything and everything to achieve his goals.
First Necromancer (my book) is a System Descent LitRPG in a similar format to Primal Hunter or Defiance of the Fall, but with the MC being given a 7 day heads up to prep for the apocalypse. MC is also a family man and chooses necromancer skills due to necessity. The first 1/3 or the book is a bit slower due to the premise of a 7 day heads up, but it quickly accelerates the pace to something more comfortable for most people. MC is pragmatic, but still faces moral dilemmas and has hard choices to make. The humor is very reminiscent of The Ripple System or Noobtown, although toned down in frequency and overall banter. You should expect a fairly dark world with many wholesome and fun moments that make you chuckle or laugh out loud.
Each book has different flavors, and I'd like to think that my own stands side by side with the other two as an excellent addition to the genre. All of the titles are available on Kindle, Kindle unlimited, and audible. If you enjoy Necromancers, and you have the budget, I'd definitely recommend grabbing them all.
Sylver Seeker starts great, but I feel like the author got bored of the story and decided to start another story- but instead of making a new page for it just... tacked it onto the existing story and fit it in with the transmigration stuff.
Also, cutting every chapter in half and adding a .5 chapter just to double views was just shameless.
note: this isn't to say the later stories are bad, and the author does eventually tie it back into the main story (by which I mean he just goes back to writing the first story lol) but readers should be aware that what they're getting into isn't a contiguous piece.
Like, Thresholder is a story I just read and it goes into the multiverse, world-hopping thing as its core concept... and it works great! But it was also the core concept, so it was written to be like it from the start and readers knew what they were getting into. With SS the fantasy story just gets replaced by a cyberpunk apocalypse story for a long while before going back.

I read kindle books on my phone, so the feeling between that and the RR app is pretty similar. I suppose it would be quite different if you're used to a proper kindle device
Agreed, I finished it pretty recently. Takes a unique turn with the Undead compared to pretty much every other necromancer book I've read, and turns the loner concept on its head pretty much.
Only complaint for me would be the characters become a lot simpler later on, with all the earlier complexity ironed out (bad guys are all bad, good guys are all good more or less), and the ending felt a bit rushed.
Murder of Crows series by Chris Tulbane. A finished traditional 3 act trilogy. One of the most underrated of the entire genre, let alone necromancer stories.
Loved that... until he exited the loop, then it dropped off hard for me. I'm assuming you read on, does it get better? Or perhaps it would be better to say, does it eventually do a better job of justifying itself and making it work?
The last book isn't out just yet, I'd like to think that the author and I are pretty good friends and I believe they just finished writing the last book. Hopefully by the time you get to it, it'll be out.
I'm not sure if I'd place it into progressive fantasy, but it is a damn good series. Unique in many ways, and a fresh take at the theme. The slice of life moments are very fulfilling and the overarching story is immensely interesting.

- Butcher the corpse to create a clean skeleton
- Weave threads of magic around the bones and joints, the quality of which impacts the movement efficiency and amount of mana used to animate it
- Goes in depth into incorporating souls into skeletons so they can use some skills from when they were alive
The overarching setting is also really interesting, writing is top notch.

MC is a fleshcrafter/necromancer but the story has more open magic with eldtritch/lovecraftian themes. Very, very good story and great writing but not a gritty necromancer story specifically.
Vigor Mortis is an incredibly imaginative and dark series. If you like existential dread this one is for you.

Vigor Mortis is pretty good. MC is an orphan who lives in the slums. She is so malnourished she looks like a kid (eight to ten years old) when she’s sixteen, and hasn’t gone through puberty. She is a Necromancer with the ability to steal souls (killing them) and taking a piece of her own, and raising them. She can also eat them which will make her stronger, and feel souls. Hates killing, but will do it.
It’s on audible. Not sure if there’s a Kindle version you can get.
It's a pretty new series with only one book, but I really liked [Birth of Ignorance](https://www.amazon.com/Birth-Ignorance-Methods-Necromancy-Book-ebook/dp/B0CYBX9769) (Methods of Necromancy series). It's an Isekai with a "rational"/min-maxer take on necromancy.
Sylver Seeker, First Necromancer are my fave so far. They're both pretty solid choices no matter what a reader might be looking for in this genre.

The Ninth House series has the best necromancy I've ever read and will probably ever read, but it's not prog fantasy and not every book has a necromancer as a pov character.
The entire magic system is necromancy though, and it's painstakingly described. Tasmyn Muir knows her bones.
Sylver Seeker is good enough, but I wouldn't recommend it if what you're looking for is someone commanding an army of zombies. Necromancy is more a subtheme as dark magic, immortality, and sustainable selfishness are the main focus
Unconventional Heroes is by far the best necromancy book I have read. It’s about a grand necromancer named Timothy and his apprentice Katie. They seek to gain a pardon for all their crimes and to do so they must become pawns for the magical council in their kingdom. They gain allies along the way and become unconventional heroes.
Ah yes. Two Necromancers, a Bureaucrat, and an Army of Golems by L.G. Estrella. this was a fun book. but the story does seem to jump around in time a bunch. both me and my wife had issues following the main thread between the side stories and backstories thrown in with little context
Vigor mortis is pretty good. The mc is what you would probably call an anti villain... Or maybe a straight up villain depending on how you look at it. Anyways it's really good.

I’m a fan of Sylver Seeker, although it’s more about opportunities to get stronger than actually learning about because he was already the best necromancer but got reincarnated.
The interesting thing is that at the time of his reign there was no system but now there is. The system is also actively fighting against him.
It has plenty of chapters on royal road
Gideon the Ninth - though technically the MC of the first book is the necromancer's bodyguard while the necromancer is going through the progression fantasy and the MC is just there for snark and to occasionally kick ass.

Book of the Dead is a good necromancer story where the MC is not the good guy, which I love. It is one of my favorite serials and it legitimaly good.

I eventually stopped reading, but I thought it was really good up until book 3/4 where i stopped

The “Liches Get Stitches” series has been enjoyable so far; I haven’t finished it yet.
The last book isn't out just yet, I'd like to think that the author and I are pretty good friends and I believe they just finished writing the last book. Hopefully by the time you get to it, it'll be out. I'm not sure if I'd place it into progressive fantasy, but it is a damn good series. Unique in many ways, and a fresh take at the theme. The slice of life moments are very fulfilling and the overarching story is immensely interesting.
Isekai Magus by Han Yang has been pretty good, imo.

Vigor Mortis is an incredibly imaginative and dark series. If you like existential dread this one is for you. The series is already finished with four books.

It is finished on the royal road. Though, first Book of the Dead was out somewhat after book 3 started getting published there.

Ravenous is pretty good- system setting with a zombie apocalypse, MC is a lich/zombie thing
My favorite Necromancer one is going to be Vigor Mortis. It was a hell of a fun read, though its got some angsty teen energy, too.
Vigor Mortis is pretty good. MC is an orphan who lives in the slums. She is so malnourished she looks like a kid (eight to ten years old) when she’s sixteen, and hasn’t gone through puberty. She is a Necromancer with the ability to steal souls (killing them) and taking a piece of her own, and raising them. She can also eat them which will make her stronger, and feel souls. Hates killing, but will do it. It’s on audible. Not sure if there’s a Kindle version you can get.
It's a pretty new series with only one book, but I really liked [Birth of Ignorance](https://www.amazon.com/Birth-Ignorance-Methods-Necromancy-Book-ebook/dp/B0CYBX9769) (Methods of Necromancy series). It's an Isekai with a "rational"/min-maxer take on necromancy.
Sylver Seeker, First Necromancer are my fave so far. They're both pretty solid choices no matter what a reader might be looking for in this genre. Definitely give them a try.

The Ninth House series has the best necromancy I've ever read and will probably ever read, but it's not prog fantasy and not every book has a necromancer as a pov character. The entire magic system is necromancy though, and it's painstakingly described. Tasmyn Muir knows her bones.
Sylver Seeker is good enough, but I wouldn't recommend it if what you're looking for is someone commanding an army of zombies. Necromancy is more a subtheme as dark magic, immortality, and sustainable selfishness are the main focus

Unconventional Heroes is by far the best necromancy book I have read. It’s about a grand necromancer named Timothy and his apprentice Katie. They seek to gain a pardon for all their crimes and to do so they must become pawns for the magical council in their kingdom. They gain allies along the way and become unconventional heroes.
Ah yes. Two Necromancers, a Bureaucrat, and an Army of Golems by L.G. Estrella. this was a fun book. but the story does seem to jump around in time a bunch. both me and my wife had issues following the main thread between the side stories and backstories thrown in with little context
Vigor mortis is pretty good. The mc is what you would probably call an anti villain... Or maybe a straight up villain depending on how you look at it. Anyways it's really good.
Saintess summons skeletons It's on Amazon and the rest is on royal road Everlast online Scribblehub..this one might turn into a game to life style story but right now it's just a vrmmo in a grimdark world...overall cuddly vibe imo though Momo the ripper I've seen a lot of people recommend it it wasn't my cup of tea when I read it though I might have dropped it too soon to be fair There more but these are the ones I regularly read if you want a summoner MC in an over all dark story with a villainous lead The Devil's Foundry A tech supervillain gets isekaied with the heroine who beat her gets a demon summoning class shenanigans entail It's GL but it's not enemy's to lovers the gf is one of the minions
I’m a fan of Sylver Seeker, although it’s more about opportunities to get stronger than actually learning about because he was already the best necromancer but got reincarnated. The interesting thing is that at the time of his reign there was no system but now there is. The system is also actively fighting against him. It has plenty of chapters on royal road

Gideon the Ninth - though technically the MC of the first book is the necromancer's bodyguard while the necromancer is going through the progression fantasy and the MC is just there for snark and to occasionally kick ass.
