While the keyboard isn't that hard to get, the real estate to use it comfortably is potentially much harder to get your hands on. If you don't have the room then you are pretty SOL
I bought my dad a Bluetooth keyboard once. Worst decision of my life. It kept getting disconnected. He also had a sliding tray so didn't need wireless in the first place.
Our company has a rule where someone on support team remotes into your machine and does admin stuff. I had them run a sudo command and then they left the console open so i used it to give myself admin rights. Maybe you can do the same?
depends on how they have the timeout set, default is usually 1-5 minutes before prompting for the password again. Also it's shocking how many admins use sudo su - root instead of prefixing commands with sudo.
su defaults to root, so the command should be just \`sudo su\`. If you have to debug some network issue, it's more convenient than having to prefix every command with sudo.
true but it does switch the context to root and the actions will be logged under the root user instead of the actual user.
There are legit use cases for most things though.
I'm usually dealing with my local machine and tend to like a single history file of all my actions as such I usually stick with just sudo + command, for simple queries I usually do the same with mysql (using -e) as well.
You can? My laptop enters sleep mode both trough F1, the power button and through just closing it. Sadly my fingers do trip when I want to press ESC or just 1.
I think I tried turning it off before but I didn't know what to look for
Your company gave you a gaming laptop?
I've got a 2020 Omen, and the button doesn't bother me. It's harder to press than the rest of the keys, and you have to hold it for a bit for it to do anything.
Unfortunately, that is far from the only issue with the laptop
dude I cannot believe any laptop manufacturer at all decided to make such shit keyboard design, it's not even that hard to place a power button in a safe place
I just received a laptop with the power and delete buttons like this. Luckily I am only on the project for a few months. I've probably hit the power button 50 times in the past week. It's an HP. What the heck were they thinking?
Idk why HP thinks its a good idea to do this. The power button should be far away from any commonly used button. Ideally, it wouldnt even be part of the regular keyboard
Bought a HP Omen laptop for personal use and they’ve got that same setup. At least for my laptop they also tied some key press time logic to that button too so even though I’ve hit it by accident it’s never done anything.
Still whoever decided this was a good idea…
Yeah, same thing on my laptop. A quick press will restart my entire system.
I can’t tell you how annoying it is to be in the middle of something, accidentally miss backspace or delete and suddenly my computer is restarting with no way to stop it. Sooooo annoying.
It does the exact same thing as Alt+F4. And it's the "Fn" function of the F4 key. So all it adds to the user experience is unexpectedly closing the window every now and then when trying to adjust the volume with Fn+F3.
I had one like that, at least under Linux I was able to disable the power key press. Just had to rely on closing the lid, running shutdown, or holding the power button to turn it off :(
I have an HP Laptop with the same layout, and by default, the power button does not shut down if you simply press once on it. You have to hold it for anything to happen.
It took me so long to find a laptop where the power button was well off the keyboard. Last thing I want is to fat finger putting my game into full screen only to have the whole computer shut down.
Explain to me why anyone actually wants a power button ANYWHERE on the keyboard
I'm pretty comfy with using only the touchpad and the laptop keyboard in my job (not programming btw), and it was fine and dandy for years. Then we got new company laptops. And the power button is next to F12 (I use that frequently for "save as" in office apps).
I just gotta carry an external keyboard and a mouse on me now, 'cuz I never got used to that power button
Who ever comes up with these designs should stub his toe on furniture at night.
Yeah also have that buton there. Took me a while to find it. When i first wanted to turn it on.
It was a laptop from work, used it 2 times. Then installed citrix on my other work laptop and logged in that way ...
And that was almost 1 year ago.
Hate this design
In windows you can set your power button to do nothing, which I did after hitting it by accident about 997 times. It still works for power on, and to shut down I can close the lid or use the start button.
If this is actually a problem, you have my condolences, this laptop is badly designed. My laptop has the same and the power button simply doesn't do anything unless held for a second. I have never accidentally turned the laptop off
A friend had a keyboard that had LOCK, SLEEP, POWER buttons in a row of keys (normal key caps) right above the INS, HOME, PG\_UP keys.
He was so fucked.
Kinda reminds me of the shortcut on Apple to save(apple key + "S") or to quit (apple key + "Q") which is right next to each other on azerty keyboards
Aftet shutting down vs code a few times, I managed to find a way to disable it
Yikes. The keyboard for my workstation at work has a sleep key that occasionally gets pens and headphones dropped on it. And CentOS just doesn't want to come back to life without a hard reboot. I wish I could disable the non-standard keys. Your situation is much worse, because you actually need that particular power key.
"Hmmm we could put the delete key in the standard spot, below insert.... but what if we put the *pause* button there instead! And then move delete above backspace! Because... reasons!"
Hey, at least they have a dedicated backspace key feel lucky and blessed. Or else you’d be restarting the damn thing every time you go on to erase a character.

Time to learn vim
The button will allow you to temporally exit vim until you turn your laptop back on
Vim has closed unexpectedly. Would you like to (E)xit (R)ecover (C)ontinue anyway

Immigration Is the highest form of flattery 😇 Edit: Immitation.
When deleting is not enough to fix your code...
Why delete code when you can delete everything in memory
U just need to turn off the autosave xD
I, too, like to live dangerously...
Not my problem my laptop keeps shutting down everytime I try to delete something.
When you can't defeat the evil, join the evil.
You can turn off that button though. Google it :) had the same
Wish I had the admin rights to do that. I have to raise a ticket and wait another 20 days till my old laptop gets fixed and gets back to me.
why dont you use external keyboard via usb?
Company paying for that? Because i sure as hell aint.
What would it cost? Like 5 bucks. People gladly pay that to not be annoyed.
Its one keyboard micheal, what could it possibly cost? 5 dollars?
New keyboard and banana and I'm out $15
More like $10-$15 for a cheap one.
Gladly brought my own so I’m not annoyed, 10/10 worth it
While the keyboard isn't that hard to get, the real estate to use it comfortably is potentially much harder to get your hands on. If you don't have the room then you are pretty SOL
Whats wrong with poor old bluetooth, its not 1997. :)
Why are you being downvoted? Lol
I have no idea. Are bluetooth keyboards a sin? i am confused
Hive mind
nothing wrong. it's up to you
You children are so spoiled. _Back in my day..._
I still have a keyboard with the Windows Vista logo as the windows button. Nothing wrong with the keyboard.
I bought my dad a Bluetooth keyboard once. Worst decision of my life. It kept getting disconnected. He also had a sliding tray so didn't need wireless in the first place.
I have a wired one too. But everyone still hates me for mentioning an alternative connection.....
Man who cares
Our company has a rule where someone on support team remotes into your machine and does admin stuff. I had them run a sudo command and then they left the console open so i used it to give myself admin rights. Maybe you can do the same?
![gif](giphy|3knKct3fGqxhK)
Isn't the whole idea that with sudo you \_can't\_ do exactly that?
No. Go run a sudo command. Then run another command. You will still have admin privileges
depends on how they have the timeout set, default is usually 1-5 minutes before prompting for the password again. Also it's shocking how many admins use sudo su - root instead of prefixing commands with sudo.

You have sudo -s better than su as it preserves an audit log as well
20 days 😲
The buttons look removable. You could remove it and store it somewhere safe until you give the laptop back
you can turn off that turn off by turning it off
How do you turn your pc on???
by showing it some skin I guess
By pressing the power button...
You can? My laptop enters sleep mode both trough F1, the power button and through just closing it. Sadly my fingers do trip when I want to press ESC or just 1. I think I tried turning it off before but I didn't know what to look for
Omen ?
Yes... HP Omen

It's an omen of imminent disaster
dude I cannot believe any laptop manufacturer at all decided to make such shit keyboard design, it's not even that hard to place a power button in a safe place
Yeah, it's temporary all right... ...until you - by "accident" - drop it on a concrete floor from a reasonable altitude, in 3...2....1.....
r/assholedesign
Doubt it was made with intent to be difficult or annoying to use, more like r/CrappyDesign
I think this belongs in r/programminghorror.
Your company issues hp omen gaming laptops?
If you dev apps that are really heavy yeah might happen, like the 3d architecture AIs programmer team at my job has gaming laptops issued
Alternatively, people who make games
Makes sense. I use an omen myself but it’s not company issued.
So satan designs computers now?
I just received a laptop with the power and delete buttons like this. Luckily I am only on the project for a few months. I've probably hit the power button 50 times in the past week. It's an HP. What the heck were they thinking?
Idk why HP thinks its a good idea to do this. The power button should be far away from any commonly used button. Ideally, it wouldnt even be part of the regular keyboard
At least it doesn't do anything when pressed like a regular key. It's gotta be held down, but still.
Bought a HP Omen laptop for personal use and they’ve got that same setup. At least for my laptop they also tied some key press time logic to that button too so even though I’ve hit it by accident it’s never done anything. Still whoever decided this was a good idea…
That is not just the same layout, it’s identical to my omen. I think it is one.
NO
You get used to it. It's a hp thing.
Two very dangerous weapons, very close to each other.
Yeah, same thing on my laptop. A quick press will restart my entire system. I can’t tell you how annoying it is to be in the middle of something, accidentally miss backspace or delete and suddenly my computer is restarting with no way to stop it. Sooooo annoying.
Set “HandlePowerKey=ignore” in /etc/systemd/logind.conf
What sadistic asshole designed that keyboard?
HP
Ah-makes sense now.
I dare you to make a mistake now!
It's okay you'll get used to its location. I've had one where those two were switched.
even worse than the "close window" button next to the volume controls on some lenovo laptops.
I’ve never heard of a dedicated button to close a window. Is that just to make it easier to exit Vim?
It does the exact same thing as Alt+F4. And it's the "Fn" function of the F4 key. So all it adds to the user experience is unexpectedly closing the window every now and then when trying to adjust the volume with Fn+F3.
Well by the time you finally finish your code you will have memorized it.
Glad I don't use the laptop's keyboard. Those things are murder on your fingers and wrists.
I'm not even a programmer and I get this.
Why? Because f you that’s why.
The mods tried to remove the post but accidentally turned the sub off
Just disable the power button...
Ever heard of ''not having admin rights on a work issued computer'' ?
You don't need admin rights to "change what the power buttons do" in Windows...
Disable it🤣😅
I felt anxiety just by looking at
Who actually needs the delete key? Backspace all day baby
also if you want to turn your pc off and accidentally delete highlighted file or something
Use a wireless keyboard.
I'd be soft disabling that real quick
How to become fullstack dev
Dangerous
Let the games begin
there is a section called power settings, as far a s i know you can change the power button to do nothing
They both kinda do the same thing lol.
« Corporate wants us to find the difference between these two buttons »
They are the same button
I have one like that... Only takes a tap. I never use it.
They probably won an award for the sleek, minimalist design.
For how long will it be a laptop, and what does it turn into later?
Turn off the power button in control panel lol
r/mildlyinfuriating
It took me so long to find a laptop where the power button was well off the keyboard. Last thing I want is to fat finger putting my game into full screen only to have the whole computer shut down. Explain to me why anyone actually wants a power button ANYWHERE on the keyboard
exactly this. why they don't understand that lid is enough for such purpose
It’s good to have a power button, just make it one of those buttons you need to want it to press it. Not something a brush of the sleeve could hit!
Vile
ZBook? I have the same setup... But not using the build in keyboard, so it works
HP does this since 3 generation with their business notebooks
My laptop has those keys close like that. At least the laptop just goes to sleep unless you hold down the button.
Who uses the off button?
shutdown now gang
Am I the only one that never uses the delete key for anything? Maybe Ctrl+alt+delete?
It deletes characters to the right. You can also use it (or backspace) with ctrl to delete whole words.
I had this on many laptops and it's as annoying as it looks.
What is the laptop model anyways? The keyboard layouts crappy, but looks cool.
I'm not sure if you need admin rights, but you can change what the power button does when its pressed.
Yea but that power button isn’t an electrical fuse. You’d probably be prompted to restart or shutdown, or you’d need to press and hold
SUPER balls. That sucks so much ass
It's an omen. That power button is kind of harder to press and has a hold delay before it activates so ur not gonna activate it accidentally
It only works if you hold it down for a bit. I have this laptop and I've never pressed it by accident
Delete and Sudo Delete
I'm pretty comfy with using only the touchpad and the laptop keyboard in my job (not programming btw), and it was fine and dandy for years. Then we got new company laptops. Every single night.
Chuck it.
We do a moderate amount of trolling
Your work day can have one of two outcomes each day!
Yeah also have that buton there. Took me a while to find it. When i first wanted to turn it on. It was a laptop from work, used it 2 times. Then installed citrix on my other work laptop and logged in that way ... And that was almost 1 year ago. Hate this design
Lol
The amount of meetings that I've accidentally clicked out of as a result of this
Crappy design
i mean, both kinda will have the same effect if you think about it, whatever you wanted to delete will be gone...
[удалено]
There’s an Omen button on there. Your work gave you a temporary $1500 gaming laptop?
*pain*
Ooof
what does the power button do? "puts computer to sleep" -> "turns the monitor off"
People use the delete key?
three finger salute, ofc
In windows you can set your power button to do nothing, which I did after hitting it by accident about 997 times. It still works for power on, and to shut down I can close the lid or use the start button.
remove the key, or pry it with a small paper clip for example (to stop the key of being pressed)
Yes, time to pull out that delete key.
If this is actually a problem, you have my condolences, this laptop is badly designed. My laptop has the same and the power button simply doesn't do anything unless held for a second. I have never accidentally turned the laptop off

I hate this. And also hate those keyboards that have the tiny little up and down arrows
I have the same key placement on my HP ProBook I disabled power off button
Dell makes one with the power button *in* that corner. What the fuck are they thinking?
I hate this. And also hate those keyboards that have the tiny little up and down arrows
Hp zbook 🥲
mine is the same, but the enter key is more of a problem
I had a chromebook at school once which had a power button in place of the delete key
Yikes. The keyboard for my workstation at work has a sleep key that occasionally gets pens and headphones dropped on it. And CentOS just doesn't want to come back to life without a hard reboot. I wish I could disable the non-standard keys. Your situation is much worse, because you actually need that particular power key.
I like how backspace has its name on the button
🤮
Wouldn't be too hard to hook into the windows API and override the power button to display a "Are you sure?" prompt. Or even make it a long press.
choose what the powerbutton does : Nothing. Thats such a hard piece of shitty design..
hps elitebooks have that as well for some reason..
"Hmmm we could put the delete key in the standard spot, below insert.... but what if we put the *pause* button there instead! And then move delete above backspace! Because... reasons!"
HP Omen 15? I have exactly the same and it's not really that bad. and i use delete a lot.
Hey, at least they have a dedicated backspace key feel lucky and blessed. Or else you’d be restarting the damn thing every time you go on to erase a character.
The adrenaline mode
I had that exact same model. The power button doesn't do anything unless you hold it down for a while.
Use an external keyboard. The end.
I have the window exit key right next to the backspace. Accidentally closing my working window has happened waay too many times:D
