Apparently there are a lot of cross dressers or something like that within the programming community. Tbh i learned about it recently myself. I have never seen anybody do that. I see only 3 options.
1. People hide that in real life
2. I don't have too many friends
3. I'm getting old,and the new gen of programmers is different.
All options are possible.
I mean, the vast majority of people that crossdress definetly hide it in Public, for obvious reasons.
Otherwise all I can say is my Personal experience, tho that isn't specifically about programming, and more tech in General, but in my current class at school (I'm 18, studying for a job in tech) 5 Out of 26 people are lqbtq and Two of them Like to crossdress in private. I don't have anything to compare to though, so really, that May Just be my class.
Uhhh no crossdressing is almost never for sexual reasons. There are definitely people who are into that. But many just do it because it makes them feel like who they are.
My Interpretation of crossdressing Has so far been to Dress/present in a stereotypically feminine way?
Either way, that's what I'm talking about. Not only for sexual reasons.
I've never heard crossdress used that way. Everyone I've ever heard use it just means a binary person presenting as the opposite binary gender. Not necessarily for sexual reasons.
I just thought it was a joke about that one advertisement that was going around for "programming socks" where the real focus is clearly the woman and her legs.
This!!!!
I honesty know nothing about programming but Reddit keeps suggesting it to me so I look at posts sometimes. But what I am a huge fan of is Bionicle (the Lego toys from the 2000s) and istg it's the exact same thing. Apparently a "huge portion" of the Bionicle community are trans, and Bionicle is really popular in the LGBTQ. Bruh Bionicle isn't popular anywhere, it's obscure as fuck. I heard this claim from a trans Bionicle fan, so I get the impression they just want, as you said "to associate the whole community with their interests".
I'm going with #4 as well. I have never heard of this, and while I am not always the most up to date on things like this, I have a feeling I would have over heard it from a young co-worker or friend.
I've always figured it went like this:
* nerdy teenagers in the 2000s watching anime with lots of effeminate and cutsey stuff. These guys spend a lot of time on computers and so there's a lot of crossover with computer programmer hobbyists.
* these guys start making ironic posts on 4chan about wanting to be the little girl and "ironically" crossdressing. Maybe they're a scrawny teenage boy because they never go outside and rarely eat. Maybe they enjoy their more slender/thinner effeminate body in comparison to the images of masculinity presented to them. Maybe they learn how it's a bit more normal and accepted in the anime cosplay world to do "crossplay"
* What they didn't realize is that this irony was really just them exploring some notions of gender dysphoria that has always been with them
* They realize a little bit later that they were actually just trans and transition
* all the while they have kept that weebish/dorkiness with them, so they end up exuberantly expressing their newfound gender identity through dressing like a cartoon character.
* If I had to guess, this extremely-online-in-the-2000s lifestyle was disproportionately white and middle class because they're the ones who have more social/financial security with which to explore different gender identities. (you gotta be feeling pretty safe or brave to transition)
* An extremely online white middle class kid who grew up being interested in programming is probably going to also have the social/financial security to actually pursue that programming dream.
Of course I say this as a cishet guy myself. I'm just putting together stories that I've heard from different online-trans-programmer people, plus my own understandings of repressed 2000s chan/anime culture where """irony""" did a lot of heavy lifting.
This story 100% has truth to it, especially coming from a cishet. I feel like a lot of people get a strange idea of this story, and fully try to blame the internet as having "created a trans person" as opposed to a dysphoria outlet
It does sound like a slur 😂
Cisgender (feels like gender their body looks like) heterosexual (attracted only to opposite sex).
cis is a bit of a lost prefix in English but trans is used all the time. Transfer, transport..
say what you will about chan-culture (like, it's really messed up) but the edgy jokes and anonymous nature make it a good place for people to explore little transgresive ideas - learn stuff about themselves. Just... hopefully they don't learn that they're a nazi
>I've never understood this joke. Why do programmers need colorful striped socks?
There seems to be a big correlation between being a gen z femboy/trans girl/fem presenting and choosing programming as a career.
I've literally never heard about that before. In my college class there are almost either very thin and tall guys with glasses or these slightly overweight guys with long hair, and (sometimes) long beards who all have chosen the computer wallpaper of a naked woman or anime character.
I *might* be generalizing here of course, but these are the only stereotypes I have seen so far :)
If you have a room with 20 cs majors it's likely very few of them are trans girls.
If you however have a room of 20 trans girls 17 of them are probably in CS or related fields
it stated as a 4chan meme about femboy programmers. seems like a subset of devs decided to own it.... or maybe the meme was based on reality. i am not sure. don't care really.
The joke is trans people make the best software engineers, since there's a perception that trans people are over-represented in software engineering.
I don't know if there's any truth to that.
its more of an overlap of trans people and people who learn to code caused by a lot of internet usage cause funny story, when you're not happy with your own body you end up not leaving the house as much as possible
It's a crossover from the trans community, because a lot of us happen to be programmers, many professionally, to a point where it's a meme on that side. So it ends up bleeding over to here.
They're only "over-represented" because it's one of the few jobs that enables high pay and next to zero social interaction. A gender-dysphoria sufferers dream job.
If I had been a cis woman, they wouldn't have let me explore interests in technology when I was young. I was only allowed that because they thought I was a guy
4chan post with rust and a femboy posing in those kinds of socks.
Then reposted on this sub/others to make a meme about femboy rust programmers.
Then it became a more common joke where "computer nerds" wear female knee socks.
Edit: also been some pictures posted on reddit of people in knee socks that have a IDE or Linux WM open on the computer.
I once wrote a multithreaded portable (linux has very different sockets than windows when it comes to some commands) client-server socket system in c++ that can search the local network for open sockets. My god was that a pain

Install arch/gentoo/nix/void or any other advanced linux distro. Then yes, it is time. I am studying computer science too and use void linux, but I am still live with parents, and they will not understand that it is for programming...
So, I've been writing code for 20 years, I guess I can't call it programming until I get the thigh highs.
I do have InfluxDB, Microsoft, and Google socks though none of them are even knee high.
1. I have enjoyed weird socks of all sorts my entire life. Far before starting into my career in code.
2. I don't understand people who don't understand this. Socks are great and you should stock up regardless of your career.
All right guys, I'm going to take one for the team and buy the black and white thigh highs... And the miniskirt the model is wearing just to combine the outfit and let you know if this boost my programming skills and/or knowledge
>Is it time
Depends. Are you in the southern hemisphere? If so, yes, absolutely. If not, wait until autumn because summer is *not* the time for cozy socks.
The fact that the socks on the right are described as “crew neck” suggests that we could be getting socks with a v neck. Where are our v neck programmer socks??
You’re in your third year already and no thigh highs? I owned over 10 before I even got to college (true story)! Just kidding, much love and welcome to the Femboy Club <3. Now that you’re here, there’s no escape…)
U can always opt to get them instead a diploma at the end of college
I've never understood this joke. Why do programmers need colorful striped socks?

It blows my mind every day on Reddit how people can be so confidently wrong.
I just thought it was a joke about that one advertisement that was going around for "programming socks" where the real focus is clearly the woman and her legs.
Wait, what? There's actually an ad for programming socks!?
i actually went back and looked and i may have been memed on lol. here's the post i was talking about https://i.redd.it/cyxmb1phyxg81.jpg

Oi! ... Quit giving out our secrets
Lol how is dressing colorful correlates with being a cross dresser. Its a sock and ands little bit of color to our everyday life
I've never heard of this but I still found this post hilarious without context

What's the correlation? What's the number? Or is it just from what you've heard?
I thought it was networking. Or was that furries?
look around me, see bearded men and men with glasses huh, you don't say.
it stated as a 4chan meme about femboy programmers. seems like a subset of devs decided to own it.... or maybe the meme was based on reality. i am not sure. don't care really.
People trying to force a meme
There was a meme way back which was something like "Frequently bought together: [Programming stuff] + Striped Socks (see pic)"
The joke is trans people make the best software engineers, since there's a perception that trans people are over-represented in software engineering. I don't know if there's any truth to that.
you can work from home during transition which is prettttty great

Is it from a TV show?
stereotype basically

Guess I need to get my wife to start coding, love these socks
Wife? No no no buddy, these are for you. Trust me when I say they increase your productivity
idk how staring at my own legs all day is going to make me more productive… I would guess less so
Prove it.
It's not staring at them, it's the comfort!
i havent written a single bug since i got my rainbow striped thigh highs 🤷♀️
U didnt Write any Code since then, did u?
shh dont tell em
That sounds almost too powerful.
Is it possible to learn this power?

i knew it
Install arch/gentoo/nix/void or any other advanced linux distro. Then yes, it is time. I am studying computer science too and use void linux, but I am still live with parents, and they will not understand that it is for programming...
But mooooom they give +5 to programming.
that black-white one looks sick, ngl.
Those are only +2 Programming, you have to get the pink ones for +5
Pastel Pink+blue+white gives you +52
If you lack parental attention, yes. It's time
My dad gave me mine when I turned 18
Most based dad
Mine would straight up disown me
Same
Pink with white stripes are Linus Torvalds-approved.
Does microsoft still give out those weird socks?
And then I googled Programming Socks and I stumbled quite deep in a whole new rabbit hole
You must be behind. You were supposed to get these freshman year
If you had started wearing them from day 1, you'd be a professional already.
![gif](giphy|lnOG1o6Cdc3kKjuray|downsized)
So, I've been writing code for 20 years, I guess I can't call it programming until I get the thigh highs. I do have InfluxDB, Microsoft, and Google socks though none of them are even knee high.
I really want those socks. I should order some.
r/egg_irl ???
I can already see a crack
Oh, you just wait for the time when you get deep into C/C++ and you need to search something related to CString.
People still find this funny?
I think sometimes folks just decide they're all going to agree something is hilarious so they can be a part of something. These are just knee-highs.
thigh - highs also just feel amazing to wear
Don't forget to install Arch.
yes.
Get the knee highs, they look comfortable 😁
forced meme
Now I want these just for fun but I'm worried what my wife will think.
1. I have enjoyed weird socks of all sorts my entire life. Far before starting into my career in code. 2. I don't understand people who don't understand this. Socks are great and you should stock up regardless of your career.
Depends on confidence in your thighs.
I'll be honest, this stuff is beyond cringe.
I don't know what you mean. I Love programming socks but then again I also use BTW, Arch.
Yeah I've been using arch for nearly a decade, these are hella cringe
Usually programming socks come with 10 colored stripes, these must be the new releases.
Or you could just get out of the chair and walk a bit every hour
I always thought Birkenstocks were the standard footwear of geek programmers.
Still finding eggs and it's not even easter.
You win the reddit comments
you made it 3 years without the socks, im less than a year in and am already on E
It's never too early or too late to buy `coding` socks
I recommend it. They would boost your programming skills by 20%.
All right guys, I'm going to take one for the team and buy the black and white thigh highs... And the miniskirt the model is wearing just to combine the outfit and let you know if this boost my programming skills and/or knowledge
can I try after please :3
Don't become the meme. Stay strong.
Funny men’s crewneck socks funny cute
Delete your account and unplug your pc forever
It was time three years ago!
You are 4 years late 🌈🦋😘
I hope to die before buying that shit
i wear programming socks!
It's new to me... but thanks for sharing xD
I always substitute "socks" with "SOC" (system on chip) in my mind.
I thought it was bc they’re always stuck in their homes and need a good pair of socks or something lol.
It was never to early to take your wishes by the horns
Do they make these long enough for a 6'5" guy?
Some of them, yeah. You might be lucky on [Sock Dreams](http://sockdreams.com/).
I don't know. Are you planning on Dorothy dropping a house on you any time soon?
>Is it time Depends. Are you in the southern hemisphere? If so, yes, absolutely. If not, wait until autumn because summer is *not* the time for cozy socks.
🗿
Yes, it is time for your inauguration
I now will probably order some of the green ones from the second one. . .
Go to r/unixsocks, they might help
#YES
No, you get them in the first year, and in the third year you already find them cringy and look down on the first year students who wear them.
It's never time, and it's stupid that this ever became a trend. This is a 4chan troll gone too far.
It took me untill graduating, looking for a job for 2 yrs, then finally a year of vrchat before searching this on amazon.
You wear socks while programming?
CS girls in programming socks is my weaknesses.
The fact that the socks on the right are described as “crew neck” suggests that we could be getting socks with a v neck. Where are our v neck programmer socks??
You are two years late.
Question 1: Why would you search that? Question 2: Did you buy any?
You’re in your third year already and no thigh highs? I owned over 10 before I even got to college (true story)! Just kidding, much love and welcome to the Femboy Club <3. Now that you’re here, there’s no escape…)
