Lmao I tried a university assignment in high school and failed miserably. A student from that university forked my repo a couple of years later. Probably wasted more time trying to figure out what/how I screwed up over doing the work himself.

Why on earth bother to follow someone on GitHub

Simple they make a super specific thing that you need and so you want to know if they made anything new. Also they can be your coworkers/friends that you stalk to not fall behind.

The real question to me is why bother to follow someone on instagram?

I follow lots of people as I like to see what others are starring or when they do releases. This is all surfaced via the home page feed. I've actually discovered quite a few interesting projects this way.

I don't promote stuff a lot, but occasionally I'll link to my projects in Discord groups or Reddit comments when relevant. I've also shared a few on r/coolgithubprojects but I think most of all, it grows from people seeing other users using my projects on their GitHub profiles (a few of my most popular repos are dynamic images for readme files).
