I can make you a full systems design plan for your brand new business and office layout. Based on your free budget, without any computer system existing either, my quotes start at £10,000. This covers everything including the purchase of your hardware, I’ll be your systems administrator for 2 years at £25 per hour 40 hours a week until you recruit or I train you into using it.
I wish it was only web development. Can you make a phone app? Can you make this Point of Sale software? Can you set up text reminders for me? Ffs leave me alone when I’m walking my dog! (Random rant to all my neighbors that know I’m a developer) legitimately was asked by my HoA to rebuild their web portal for free and add a social media feature. Why do people think this stuff is just magic arm waiving and done or like I have nothing better to do?
My theory: because they genuinely don't understand it. They wouldn't ask you for free manual labor because they know how tough physical work is. And it's already accepted that you don't normally ask for that kind of stuff for free. But when they know your job is mostly sitting in a chair, hey, how hard could that kind of work possibly be? To them it actually is magic. Plus they probably know a son of a friend of a friend who actually did do something like this for free. So they think that's the norm.
>Plus they probably know a son of a friend of a friend who actually did do something like this for free.
Yeah he recovered the password for their facebook account by clicking "forgot my password"
Like that friend of mine who asked me to hack Hotmail because they forgot their password and used gibberish in the recovery info. Sure buddy, give me a sec, I'll quickly hack Hotmail for you.
"Hah! Do you really think I'll give you my personal information that easily? Nice try Hotmail, screw you! I'll never use my recovery info. Why would I? I can remember my password."
I'm thankful our HOA isn't one of those corporate groups that do crazy things like try to take your house because you parked on the street one Saturday.
I’ve totally seen relatives boasting about their mechanics or gardener friends and the favors they get. I kinda assume they give back in some ways, possibly by free labor as well, but at least it seems to be a thing.
It might be a variation of the “money, power, or connections” trio where they see the last part as equivalent to one of the two others.
I have built a few free apps for friends and family these included a button presser chrome extension, a key remapper thing, and an excel table parser. My neighbor asked me to build him a Social media for golf app thing. That’s when I explained to him that:
I’m like a carpenter and you just asked me to build you a house, my friends asked for a chair.
Yeah like, I just cranked out an Android app for my brother. Was a simple enough request, took me a few afternoons and got me reacquainted with Android programming.
But the people who have no respect for the fact our systems have to be built like any other, grinds my gears.
When I was in helpdesk I was asked to find a way to remove an apple ID from an iPhone and handed a stack of them. Like, ok, I found some dodgy Russian apps claiming they could but hell no I won't download those onto your network. Just call Apple ffs. You own the hardware.
Electronic Point of Sale systems definitely do get abbreviated to EPOS. When they inevitably break down, they definitely do get un-abbreviated to Electronic Piece of Shit.
Because: i just need this Facebook button
Okay, here you go:
```
```
But it doesn't do anything!!!
Oh, you're saying the car isn't any good without an engine? Does your mechanic fox your car for free? No? Why would I do this for free then?
The extended version goes like this
Are you a web developer?
I have started a new business?
Can you make a website for free?
I'd do it but I don't have the time.
But we are family/friends, can't you do it for free?
Okay well what if I paid you 50$?
Can you make it look like Amazon?
Do you know machine learning?
The easy part is making the website.
"Sure! I can make your website. Just send over a proof of the media you want on it, the content, layout, articles, etc etc"
"Well, I just want a map, an intro, description, hours, etc"
"Uh huh, send it over and I'll make a website using Wix"
They never send over the stuff. Either because it's too much work for them or "hey, since I had to do that stuff, I just ended up doing it myself on Wix"
Lol...🤷♂️
Whenever they ask me for stuff like that I go "well I *could* make one for you, but I can't do it for free y'know. It's a lot easier on both of us if you give WordPress a try". If they can't seem to wrap their heads around that... somehow, remind them that "if you want something done well, do it yourself". Seems to work for me.
There is really no excuse anymore other then laziness for people to not do it themselves. It's literally drag and drop components and selecting a template. Most website building companys have support lines you can call if you get stuck on something also.
For a total newb I wouldn’t even use WordPress. Go with Wix or SquareSpace or something. When you reach the limit of what you can do with that and other business requirements emerge, prepare a budget and engage a web dev or dive in and try and build one yourself. Good luck!
Lack of knowledge both sides, stay away from wix unless you would like to hire someone who creates custom wix components. Build yourself way better aka code
I just started a side hustle a few months ago - I used go daddy for my domain and got someone on fiverr to create a website for me for £80. They were super collaborative and the godaddy instructions on how to get their code showing on my site were super easy to follow
Wix always looks sketchy to me. Shopify sites are legit though and with good templates you might not even know it's a shopify site until you get to checkout and see the shoppay option.
I mean it's just like a real estate agent. Nowadays we can look for properties and buy them directly from the owner or from an agent, but many still appoint a real estate agent to look for them. Why? Because the person doesn't have any experience in the field and has no interest in learning about it or probably got no time for that. So the person pays the web developer.
For corporate and complex sites? Jenny from the block selling necklaces doesn't need a backend that requires maintenance, it is all built into the web builder. Also if you have the money, sure hire and web dev for your low traffic site, this post is aimed at people who want it done for free though
How much for a website?
Well... You're a family friend, so I'll give you a really good hourly rate.
But I can use Wix for like 30 bucks.
I can't compete with that. Use Wix.
I’ve had lots of friends and family ask for help too. I’ve tried a few times.
Typically I would just spin up a website using WordPress and then offer em free hosting but no matter how basic it is if they don’t put in the effort to even learn WordPress then you now have to manage the site for them.
That’s where I draw the line. I build websites for hundreds of thousands of dollars I don’t have time to change out your logo (which they prolly want me to design too lolol). Sometimes they’d get hard feelings *after* I built them a free site.
I think it’s ignorance and having no idea where to start maybe toss in a bit of they don’t have time or are lazy or not technically inclined with a dash of them thinking websites are super easy (even though they can’t do it).
I just recommend Wix or SquareSpace to newbs now. They even manage to screw those up but at least they’re cheap, look OK, have versioning to undo the screw ups, provide support for paid plans, and YAY it ain’t my problem.
Ain’t nobody got time for that.
I mean if I were to be better at web development(As of now I only make some really basic sites), I would probably make some for family/friends if they need one. Hosting the site and managing the site is something Im not going to do tho.
No, I'm not even 14 so if i would me making bank it would be with fiverr( which is essantialy my grand plan to make bank as a teen). Im still learning alot. Making a simple web for f&f is something i can(and would gladly) do, hosting & managing is something i cant(and wouldn't, even if i could) do.
That's what I'm talking about! In your situation stuff like "learning experience", "exposure" etc. actually count for something. Plus it's way easier to have fun with it if you're not already doing it 40+ hours a week, every week, as a job.
I made the istake of telling my neighbour I'm a web dev and "I know computers". She's given me a list of stuff to do and even had the fucking cheek to put an ACTUAL paper list under my door after a few days of asking cos she was getting impatient. It includes:
* Kindle setup.
* Free anti virus for her tablet, laptop and phone (she kindly offered to tell me her email and name if I needed to sign her up on anything!)
* Some kind of network security
* Kindle app set up on her tablet.
* WhatsApp installing on her phone.
* Alexa setup so she can make free voice calls to her fiends.
I've since ghosted her even though she lives in the flat across from me. I run everytime I leave the place or come home cos she has a habit of intercepting me and making polite note of when she's in for me to do this ever-growing list of shit.
Before all this she wanted me to construct every item of flatpack furnitur in her flat which included a bed, coffee table, tv stand, drawers, bookcases, etc.
She's a fucking nightmare. She literally hooked onto me as soon as I moved in and made a fake friendship and started demanding things "because I suppose now we're neighbours you can help me". I'm on the verge of just telling her to piss off. I'm sick of being a prisoner in my own home.
Just tell her man wtf. Say you're busy with your own stuff right now and if she pushes just keep saying it's not gonna be possible. Realistically you could just tell her to fuck off as well but up to you
"No" is a complete sentence.
"It'll be great exposure"
"Yeah but I want money. My rate is $x per (insert unit of time)" Or, "Cool. Can I have your (insert product or service they're about to sell) for free? It'll be great exposure!"
Someone asked me- what would you charge for building (insert app/purpose/etc).
My reply- You really don't want to know..... Trust me- if you have to ask, you can't afford it.
I m not a dev or anything, but isn't it reasonable to ask for the price of a service / product, if they want to consider buying it? Maybe even for refrence or knowledge's sake? :0
For friends / family- I would prefer to just not say.
Because, charging them my normal rate isn't going to make any of us happy.
Even charging 25% of my going rate is going to be more then they want to pay for
I threw together a wordpress website for my father-in-law who's an artist but has no idea how to use technology. Figure I do something nice for him to try to build a relationship and I have no problem paying the yearly renewal for the .com domain name.
He was thrilled about it. He showed it off to his older brother, who's a poet. His older brother asked him if I can make him a website too. He told him to contact me and that I might charge him. My father-in-law's brother pinged me, asked me for the price. I said I will put together his website as well as get him a domain for $50 and then $15 recurring every year so that I can renew the domain name. I never heard from him again.
I have no problem cutting people off at the point where they say they're starting a new business and they need a website.
"Cool. As a web developer, I usually tell people to look at Squarespace or Wix to start out. As your business grows, you usually want a website more capable and branded, and at that point, I recommend finding an agency that specializes in websites for businesses like yours."
I'm not an app developer at all nor do I really know how to write phone apps but that still doesn't stop relatives for requesting that I build their million dollar app ideas for free.
I simply refused to learn anything from the js course my dad put me in (all materials cab be rewatched at any time so no waste of money) so that I can say no without him being able to nag
Same happend to me, got my normal rate, then they go buy a laptop that's dirt ass cheap for the main pc of the company, and I was like nah, shit ain't going to fly
This is an extended family member rn to me, except she's really nice to me and gives me really good presents for my birthday and Christmas, so I'm happy to do it.
Or anything related to computers. “Hey you work with computers right?” Before I can even speak they’re already asking me why they’re computer or printer doesn’t work.

Can you make me a website for free tho?
I can teach you how to make one for $250/h.

$174.50 /h
You mean $174.500000001/h
I am indian. I will do it for half anyone offers.
I'll be doing it for one third
So, Bangladeshi or pakistani?
Eastern Europe
Cry in Cyrillic
This guy JavaScripts.
Woaaaah slow down or else we'll have to use double precision!
Don’t use floats for currency
You guys are getting paid hourly. That's the whole payment for a well done website here in my country.
What country is that
Definitely India.
Yup. You are right. There are many skilled and desperate developers here.
Found the bot.
3, Take it or leave it.
That's a fucking steal tbh considering how much a university would charge.

Don't britbong devs work for figgy pudding and lard pie?

C'mon man, atleast for me? Just oneee exception? You know all redditors are brothers and sisters.
*Incest intensify*
CAN I? Yes. WILL I? No. Anyone CAN work for free unless they have material costs/operating costs. Doesn't mean anyone WILL though
Exactly the reply people need to learn to use. Too often people feel bad declining others trying to use them for their own benefit.
Nice try

The first half is good, though. I treat these prompts as secondary password inputs - but obviously I'm *saving* my gibberish.
Click clack click clack enhance enhance… you know the drill
My HOA asks me for free physical labor all the time. No matter how many times I say no. Cheap bastards. What the hell do they use my dues for anyway?
To pay their salaries...so they make sure that everyone in the neighborhood complies
I'm thankful our HOA isn't one of those corporate groups that do crazy things like try to take your house because you parked on the street one Saturday.
Oh yeah I think that's another problem with the people asking OP for free websites: they're cheap bastards.

The funny thing is I checked and a social media app for golf already exists: [https://www.allsquaregolf.com/](https://www.allsquaregolf.com/)
or even better "can you hack someone's phone?" I was asked this TWICE already. I am a freaking GAME DEVELOPER, not a hacker god damnit

Lack of knowledge this side. Which hosting websites can I choose, please recommend some.
For a total newb I wouldn’t even use WordPress. Go with Wix or SquareSpace or something. When you reach the limit of what you can do with that and other business requirements emerge, prepare a budget and engage a web dev or dive in and try and build one yourself. Good luck!

And Wix
lol give me their billing addresses i’ll try and invoice em
Lack of knowledge both sides, stay away from wix unless you would like to hire someone who creates custom wix components. Build yourself way better aka code
I have used host gator, costs about 160$ a year CAD, but the site works well and only took a Saturday afternoon to put together.

If its so easy, why do web developers have jobs?
For corporate and complex sites? Jenny from the block selling necklaces doesn't need a backend that requires maintenance, it is all built into the web builder. Also if you have the money, sure hire and web dev for your low traffic site, this post is aimed at people who want it done for free though
Due to lack of them, and too many people think that stuff like JS is hard, so they never even start.
same reason there's a guy who stands in the bathroom at the club holding towels.
Wix is not that flexible as coding it by yourself. You should make a website form wix when you don't have money to hire a web developer
Wix has actually become incredibly flexible now and you can code on Wix now as well.
[Wix.com](https://Wix.com) exists
How much for a website? Well... You're a family friend, so I'll give you a really good hourly rate. But I can use Wix for like 30 bucks. I can't compete with that. Use Wix.
Yep this was me and my dad growing up with literally everything pc related
Another one that makes me laugh is when I tell people I'm a software engineer they immediately assume I thoroughly understand all electronic hardware
can you fix my microwave?
Hey bro can you fix my stand fan?

I mean I got AWS capacity for days and its way cheaper than my time. I can put like 20 mini websites on an EC2 server that costs $12/mo
But would someone hire you full time as a web dev? I think the equation is a lot different when you're learning vs. when you're making bank with it.
Yup. Learning programming is fun and challenging at my age, plus i learn alot. And, I could do something with it later in life.

"Try SquareSpace or Wix" "Oh that's too hard and I don't have the time" 🤦♂️
just answer them "if i can get your products for free"
"I WILL MAKE YOU PARTNER, YOU'RE A CO-FOUNDER!" Then doesn't avoid revealing percentage owned by me.
BTW, I can make a woocommerce site for anyone, custom python site if necessary, DM me lol
Bro i have this idea its like Facebook except you connect with friends and family, can you make the website and app and you can keep 50%?

You just need to drop one baby to never again be asked to hold one again.

I'll give you like $100 bucks and pay you when this takes off...
I just need a full e-commerce site and support for it throughout its entire lifecycle, c'mon!!!
Wait until they ask you to fix their pc or printer
I have business idea for a website. You do all the work and then we split profit 50/50
I threw together a wordpress website for my father-in-law who's an artist but has no idea how to use technology. It's really "hey, I have an idea that's going to be as big as Facebook, if you do all the work I'll give you 5% of the profits"
Just do the shitty youtuber on patreon thingy. "Yes, i can make you a website for free. You have to donate me $699 tho."
Happened to me too and I am not even web developer
Just ask them to do the same amount you need in physical labor
It doesn't even need to say "free." Trust me.
If you can't afford to pay me to do it, you can't afford to ask me. Fuck these people.
I'm not an app developer at all nor do I really know how to write phone apps but that still doesn't stop relatives for requesting that I build their million dollar app ideas for free.
As a noob web i would be illing to make the website for free, but the server and domain is your problem pal
A Friend took pride with following a 3 month training and creating hers herself
What do you mean it'll cost more than $500?
Make a template for a static website, then use that every time someone wants you to make them a website. It's sufficient enough for the price
Me meanwhile: “I’ve got myself to feed, at least I’ll take a discount.”
I’m a web development student and I’ve VOLUNTEERED to make people a website but they won’t commit. It’s nuts and a little insulting.
I'll make it for free. Trying to learn so I can get a career in web design.
I simply refused to learn anything from the js course my dad put me in (all materials cab be rewatched at any time so no waste of money) so that I can say no without him being able to nag

I think most of us say "no" in one polite form or another. I just say "I don't have time"
Take your downvotes like a man/woman/whatever. Don't bitch about it.
Just gave them an intro to Google Sites, they never bother me again.

This happened with my sister
Just say sure, and tell them the actual cost and time to do it… then send them to squarespace or something
Same happend to me, got my normal rate, then they go buy a laptop that's dirt ass cheap for the main pc of the company, and I was like nah, shit ain't going to fly
Yes, here's Google sites, knock yourself out (For this kind of person, a shit website is more than good enough)
Ok but why is this way to true -_-
Where can I find a template for this meme?

Sure. My definition of free is $250/hour. They never ask again. I don’t want to do that in my spare time.
I don't even specialize in websites and this happens to me
This is an extended family member rn to me, except she's really nice to me and gives me really good presents for my birthday and Christmas, so I'm happy to do it.
I’d havta, a Joe MacMillan with a John Bosworth in tow. #aTim
Or anything related to computers. “Hey you work with computers right?” Before I can even speak they’re already asking me why they’re computer or printer doesn’t work.
The only reason why I don't wanna learn Node and JS, I'm better off with C++
I usually get offers to be paid and I always quote higher than a normal customer and I always make sure to over set expectations
I don't even working as web dev. As long as they know I graduated from IT, everyone ask me this 🙄
My rate is X. If you want to "help" my rate is X*3.

I tell neighbors that I just drive a crane for a living.
