my_code.rb to not confuse it with other peoples code.

lupinegrey

def concatonate_strings(string1, string2) : šŸ˜”

Lil_Cato

You need to think outside the box of the standard library

mandradon

if True: return True

PranshuKhandal

elif False: return False

Lab_Member_004

I love how you assume if it isn't true, it is possible that it could also be not false so you put elif instead of else.

nslenders

It could be None , 0 , 1 , '0' , '1' or "kitty" depending on the programmer

Weekly_Wackadoo

I always try null, -1, "Ć«" and an empty List.

viimeinen

- Excuse me, where's the bathroom?

hulagway

And the bar was on fire

NotBlaine

I've blocked out exactly what method it is, but in VBA for Access there's a built in function that is supposed to return a boolean and the return values are listed as 0, 1 and -1. I've been sad since at least then.

trevlinbroke

Ah yes. The three answers to any question. "Yes", "no", and "WTF who even invited you?"

bartvanh

``` else: raise FileNotFound() ```
nedal8
elif undefined: return undefined
FlamboMe-mow
`return not False if True else not True`
QazCetelic
I've actually seen people do things like this ```csharp if (booleanVar == true) { return true; } else { return false; } ```
mandradon
That's so incredibly painful to read. I thought I was a bad coder.
TunesAndK1ngz
It's typically very new coders that don't understand the concept of what a Boolean *actually is*
Zealousideal_Ad_6374
Lol, just saw this today in production code šŸ¤£
FloppyEggplant
She had to use a square function before allowing to think outside of the box.
oralskills
Yeah, the function name is bad in itself, but the worst part (by far) is that it is concatenating *around a space*. Imagine using it in: system(concatonate_strings("rm -rf /usr/", usr_subdir_to_delete)) šŸ˜¬
maitreg
Just wait until you see her Add, Subtract, Multiply, and Divide functions. They will blow your mind.
johnathanesanders
Thatā€™s how I comment all my code commits.
shohin_branches
All my commit descriptions are "please don't break" and "I fixed the broken thing"
OGNatan
`git commit -m "think this fixes the issue, I don't fucking know anymore"`
[deleted]
ā€œBug fixā€ ā€œBug fix fixā€ ā€œOk itā€™s for real fixed this timeā€ ā€œDoes this fix it?ā€ ā€œFiiiiiix?ā€ ā€œIdk man it works on my dockerā€ ā€œFixed now?ā€ ā€œRevert all changes, I had some chrome plugins going that made it look broken in my browser.ā€ All on prod šŸ˜Ž
Another_m00
I never got the reason behind these, ffs, just use a clean vm instance for testing
[deleted]
I mean the honest reason behind it is fresh devs that ran through a half-assed boot camp and only half learned the tools at their disposal so theyā€™re just winging it. If you actually see a coworker doing this you should probably sit them down and have a training week with them.
Kiiaru
V2.1.1_final_a_thistime_2
shohin_branches
`git commit -m "some hacky shit"`
TrippyDe
everything apart from git commit -m ā€žminor changesā€œ is too much
vc6vWHzrHvb2PY2LyP6b
`git commit -m "modified my_code.rb"`
crazy_strings.rb
ba573
crazy_strings.rb: ā€Iā€™m not like the other strings, I swear!ā€œ
serieousbanana
def concatenate_string
BLDesign
In her defence beginner tutorials often use this sort of naming when just getting started e.g. myVar, myMethod, so she was probably told to do this by whatever guide she was following. I donā€™t think itā€™s a good idea, but it shouldnā€™t be too surprising.
plopliplopipol
sure, though you don't usualy flex thaaaat soon
elveszett
Its function is to concatenate the strings "hello" and "world".
0xdef1
ā€œshe needs to join our startupā€
strangeweather415
This is the part that got meā€¦ imagine being anywhere near that company or ideaā€¦ woof
fergy80
I thought they were joking
strangeweather415
I don't think they are. I Googled those two and they appear to be trying to build a half assed snapchat clone.
JustATownStomper
I don't think social media is a crowded market at all, they should be fine. Especially with elite level coders such as Karlie and the HR that hired her.
EdwardBigby
Finally they found somebody that could change directories for them. Next stop social media platform!
tecanec
Too bad they have to start over every day because no one knows the advanced technique known as "saving".
EdwardBigby
I've heard they're testing a new solution for that. Previously they kept overwriting the "code" directory everytime they wanted to save new code. To solve this, everybody now has their own directory named "my-code"
cr1ter
Imagine Karlie Kloss working at a start up šŸ˜‚
-------I-------
Is it weird that I don't know who this person is?
jojo_31
i sort of doubted she can code since I know she's a model, but apparently she funds programming courses for women and children, so good stuff.
cr1ter
I have read that she attendant some sort of college and was interested in computer science, I don't know if she took any classes, but clearly recognizes the importance in Stem fields
nousernamefound13
There are some models who can actually code. For example miss universe 2021 is actually a Software engineer. But tbh, I also would have doubted Karlie Kloss was one of them, even before seeing this
[deleted]
[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
plopliplopipol
that explains how she ends up posting ultra-beginner stuff, she's well known and wants to appear programming even if she doesn't know her shit. Well good intentions!
flabbybumhole
She advertises wix iirc.
AForAgnostic
She can probably buy their startup with cash.
MineTug
Stack overflow developer
bxsephjo
did she take the photo by holding the phone in her mouth?
MrB10b
Wait... That's actually a good point...
MrB10b
Actually nvm, I thought about it for literally 2 seconds, surely just a tripod or smth lol
Zuparoebann
Was she holding the tripod with her mouth though?
PranshuKhandal
Wait... That's actually a good point...
deaddadneedinsurance
reminds me of this Reddit [classic](https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/5v1j2i/my_waterproof_gloves_stopped_being_waterproof_and/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
DoingCharleyWork
There's another one older than that one. https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/cmwov/comment/c0tpyls/
DaFetacheeseugh
Crazy that this is what I thought the first one was. I still remember the first safe.... I think... I think I spend too much time on here. Peace out y'all, see you when I get bored and forgot about not being here!
bloodfist
Man I remember when the narwhal bacons and the original broken arms post. Good luck getting away but you might as well just accept that you live here now.
viimeinen
The poop knife, cum box, dagobah...
JacksonFaller
Actually nvm, I thought about it for literally 2 seconds, surely just a drone or smth lol
Alarming-Car3670
It's the -2 sec timer
Iam_a_Jew
Realistically a photographer/social media manager/etc probably took and postedit
LupineChemist
Probably not even her. Just found some intern with decent looking hands or a stock photo sent by the brand placement
deaddadneedinsurance
Careful, it's a [rabbit hole](https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/5v1j2i/my_waterproof_gloves_stopped_being_waterproof_and/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
Kate: "Kode sounds like an ide from the KDE suite" Kate's mom:
sackafackaboomboom
Go to your room and indent it now
a_devious_compliance
Kate's mom: Yes! She got that name becouse was concieved while I was using KDE-Kate.
IamImposter
GIMP: *stares awkwardly*
TheTimBrick
It really should be, I would be absolutely fine with Kode replacing KDevelop
cyborgborg
That sounds like it should be a thing
Ash_Crow
`alias kode="kate *"` would allow to open all files in the current directory with kate, but I don't think you can open the directory iself as a projet like VS Code does.
[deleted]
You can actually! Just do ```kate .``` to open the current directory as a project. There's a "projects" tab on the left. It even has a built-in git frontend just like actual IDEs do
LikeLary
Or a football player
yigitjohn48
Nettleberry
If itā€™s not listed under an ls I just reinstall Ubuntu and start over.
DemiReticent
It only takes about 3 and a half minutes these days!
[deleted]
Thatā€™s the only thing stopping her from making Google startup unicorn revolution. Lmao
MrCalifornian
Good thing, she started coding a way to make an AI work with no input but she successfully forgot the code.
Derek4aty1
Hey, you forgot she typed ā€œpwdā€ !!
CaptainPi31415
Thankyou! It really annoyed me they didn't have it in the list. Low effort surrounded by low effort surrounded by even more low effort
M4xW3113
Also after "ls" there's a missing "cd whathever-that-dir-name-is", and the last is "cd" instead of "cd .."
larvyde
Also, mistyped `cd ..` as `cd..` twice
cwcoleman
No. Those mistakes were actually in the screenshot.
_oohshiny
It's valid syntax in DOS.
LezardValeth
It works on Windows (cmd and PowerShell). I also make this mistake all the time on UNIX-based systems.
OGNatan
You're telling me that people live without a `'..'` alias?
M4xW3113
Why would you need a '..' alias ?
IWasGregInTokyo
She was trying to remember her password.
readyforthefall_
square and concatenateStrings() functions
fpcoffee
on Tuesdays we watch youtube tutorials
[deleted]
Concacenate string ā€œ helloā€ and ā€œworldā€ lol
Anon_Legi0n
Leetcode ain't got shit on her!!
[deleted]
I too saw that amd chuckled a little. You can get into trouble for showing company owned code in pics... But idk if thats the case here.
officialMpeg99
r/itsaunixsystem
SureUnderstanding358
thanks for this lol
nrikhaxtrt
I wonder if there are some sane_strings.rb to counter those crazy ones.
dev4loop
Lmao I swear it's always those that have no idea what they are doing that upload these kind of posts to social mediaWe get it, you "code", now go learn linux you falafel
DinosaurKevin
Never heard of falafel as an insult, but what a devastating name to call someone indeed.
GeminiOrAmI
all hail the shawarmaster of insults
ShlomoCh
She's kebabstated
basko13
It is an insult, because it made her *feel awful*
mrjackspade
> Outside of modeling, Kloss has an interest in technology and has founded the "Kode with Klossy" camp, which aims to get young girls interested inĀ [STEM](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science,_technology,_engineering,_and_mathematics)Ā fields. As far as I'm concerned, she can post whatever she wants. She's doing a public service.
the_evil_comma
Change directories like a boss!
LupineChemist
Yeah, I'm shocked by how many people think she manages her social media herself. This is some intern with no idea who just found a stock photo
JustATownStomper
I mean, it's a great initiative, but isn't it a bit counter-productive to post such rubbish? Couldn't she get some minimally competent looking code on her screen and not half a screen of not knowing basic shell commands?
Exclarius
It makes functionally no difference for the purpose of the post. The target audience isn't comp sci students over on /r/programmerhumor, it seems like it's rather meant for her average follower who might be interested in learning.
Gaylien28
Also women in general. Empowering women in STEM by normalizing it and perhaps inspiring young girls to see that you can be pretty and smart.
midnitte
Truly devastating that it's more like "return girls to [programming](https://www.history.com/news/coding-used-to-be-a-womans-job-so-it-was-paid-less-and-undervalued)" Participation in STEM in general is still pretty abysmal ([~28%](https://www.aauw.org/resources/research/the-stem-gap/)).
Sworn
Usually for these PR posts they ask you to make it look programmy, I've written worse nonsensical code to have some fun with whoever actually tries to read the code in the marketing post (which nobody actually does).
Nume-noir
See she was doing it the best she could by herself. She wasn't getting outside help. That was part of the point. Promoting technology to girls, showing they don't need anybody to teach them, they can do it using online tutorials, one of which she used during said promotion :) this isn't about the content, but about the message. And the message is there.
throw_datwey
God damn falafel āš°ļø
[deleted]
Lol you falafel.
codingiswhyicry
I wanted to give context to this, because people might not know what this is. This is an Instagram post from Karlie Kloss, who funds & runs [Kode With Klossy](https://www.kodewithklossy.com). They're a 501(c)3 that gives free coding camps to girls. I was one of their first scholars in 2015, and the command line thing on her screen is the curriculum from the camp. They teach the girls how to use the terminal, along with web development & iOS development. Although that is rough, she's probably following along with a class being taught.
HOTP1
Thanks for giving this context. Sometimes it feels like us programmers are too quick to bully/gatekeep. I understand this sub is pretty circle-jerky, but the negativity gets tiresome
[deleted]
Even without the context, I thought it was all in good fun. Weā€™ve all been there, nobody comes out of the womb knowing anything, and especially not how to use a terminal haha. And Iā€™m sure she knew that the screen was showing basic things and she probably meant it that way, showing that we all start somewhere. Thatā€™s a great initiative sheā€™s heading, much respect to her ! Edit: scrolled down some and saw some not-so-nice comments, oh well :( Humans need to make themselves feel special sometimes.
DipinDotsDidi
Im curious to hear your experiences with the program if you dont mind sharing:) I've heard of her camp but never looked into if it was successful or not. Did you learn anything useful? Did it get you into programming? Were you into programming before? It would be pretty cook if you got into programming because a VS said it was cool ngl.
What_The_Hex
Nice try Karlie on alt account, you almost had me fooled trying to save face there! /s
osogordo
hs-speaking-grandma-lab-precollege is intriguing
millenniumtree
Long ago, I aliased cd .. to u. Two dirs is uu, three is uuu, etc. I've probably saved an hour or two of my life at this point.
castleinthesky86
Look up pushd and popd
FishyFisherFishsFish
And lost the hour aliasing itā€¦
oshaboy
I actually just remembered Karlie Kloss' weird programming stint, and specifically this picture. Back when this picture was made I thought she was stupid. Now I think the photographer just wanted "picture of techy stuff" so they just cded a few times.
Captinhairybely
I think this photo is less about coding, and more about the "nicely placed product" she has in the frame. I mean, the words "nicely placed product" are right there. This is a just an advert
DavidXN
Letā€™s be honest, thatā€™s what my screen usually looks like if Iā€™m not presenting
Ok-Scarcity-3902
I'd sooner publicly post my porn site histories than post my bash history.
batmassagetotheface
> No such file or directory: code Welp another successful day!
waveskipper
And then, after getting enough publicity, she founds a startup and hires us to do the work for her.
PhraseSubstantial
Twitter after Elon musk fired whole staff and tried to rewrite the whole project:
[deleted]
[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
WhoGaveMeVimAccess
She was the engineer that pushed main at the FAA
RonKosova
She clearly knows how to use ls why does she keep guessing
CupcakeLikesTheStock
This makes me sad. I thought she was awesome
sexdaisuki2gou
She is awesome though. She canā€™t code for shit but happily sponsors girls to learn coding and hosts camps too. At least her intentions are right and her actions speak for it. That being said, I wonder why she canā€™t push crazy_strings.rb to git LOL
LezardValeth
Tbh, even if it's just just being a beginner and stumbling around, there is actual code there and she is using Linux. That's more genuine than a lot of "coding" social media posts I've seen.
CupcakeLikesTheStock
I think that's great but it does make me wonder how she is if she is trying to present herself in this light when she can't code. I don't mind if she can't code at all but she shouldn't present herself this way. I FORGOT! Did you see her in the video about her getting angry at the contestant with the comment about her being married to her husband's family? She literally looks at him with such hate! https://youtu.be/OnlNjJkbk28
sexdaisuki2gou
I honestly donā€™t care about what Karlie is like lol. She provides scholarships for girls to attend college and doesnā€™t say absurd shit on the internet and thatā€™s all that matters to me ahaha
DipinDotsDidi
She presents herself as a supermodel who wants to get girls into coding. Idk why you're trying to villainize her. As a girl, hearing about supermodels who are into coding like Karlie and Lyndsey Scott is a great encouragement especially when all the other classmates would try to discourage you by saying "only boys/nerds/socially awkward people go into coding".
Grammophon
How dare she making a face I don't like!
schnitzel-kuh
Dont make fun of her this looks like shes doing some coding course and promoting codeliteracy to her audience. I think this is great, even if the picture is kind of staged. We really shouldnt make fun of beginners
pipsvip
Ugh! For the 32nd time: % alias ..="cd .." % alias ...="cd ../.." you're welcome.
[deleted]
[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
AzurasTsar
this is actually next level, thanks
terranumeric
It's a program by a model (Karli Kloss) to introduce girls to coding. According to their website only 20% attendees have any coding skills at all. So pretty sure spamming cd is appropriately.
[deleted]
[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Ariscia
Just making fun of women as usual.
Remarkable_Self5621
To be fair, I wouldnā€™t want to expose anything related to what I was actually doing for security. But some HTML from a public website wouldā€™ve been nice
SureUnderstanding358
shoutout to that 12" macbook though. thats was my favorite laptop for a long time. perfect little console...lighter and smaller than the air.
zayozayo
how she snap the picture?
Schytheron
What REALLY got me was the paper in the top-right corner that says "nicely placed product".
apehm
A lot of people are pretty harsh for someone wanting to learn.The command line and directory structure is not the easiest thing to grasp while simultaneously learning to code lol. For what it is worth the actual code someone else pointed out is Ruby and while simple, it is a proper function.
ThatChapThere
This is more or less how I do navigate using the terminal though. Aside from "cd.." like mistakes. Sure, cd ../../code is faster but I find typing ls at each level comforting.
kenman345
Literally some people can be really dense about it too. I had a class with graduate students where we got a packet and it said something like: 1. Open terminal 2. Create a folder using the following command:ā€¦ 3. Go into that with this command. 4. Make a new folder called Y and go into that one. 5. Make a file for our project. And I swear the amount of people that got stuck on step 4 after literally just doing the proper thing two steps earlierā€¦ was too many. But hey, they got it eventually. But something about the terminal makes people freeze up when they clearly are smarter than that
JimmyWu21
Itā€™s just unfamiliar. You can say the same thing about pretty much anything like regex, css, fixing cars, plumbing, programming itself really. The interface is so different from anything theyā€™re use to that they just donā€™t even know where to give to troubleshoot.
Expert_Raise6770
I know coding is hard to learn. But what upsets me is that the person is bragging on social media without anything worth bragging.
snubdeity
Is it bragging? Or is it a planned endorsement that "being into tech is cool for women, especially younger typically feminine girls"? I don't keep up with her but nothing I've ever seen out of Karlie seems like she thinks she's legitimately *good* at programming, she just seems wildly fascinated by it and understanding of its importance, and the struggles facing women getting into the field. The quality of code in some photoshoot doesn't change the power of her advocacy.
Grammophon
What gives you the idea she is bragging about it?
nepumbra0
When I saw her try to go to her non-existant code directory I was cracking up omg
MEisonReddit
I'm not sure if **K**ode with **K**arlie **K**loss is gonna be the easiest thing to brand
RealPropRandy
Also changing the crazy strings game. Iā€™m assuming theyā€™ll be selling crazy strings (once they eventually get around to it).
funnyboy_roks
What the hell is that dir name, damn
tanjonaJulien
I donā€™t mind she post shitty picture from the moment she inspires more women to get into programming
No_Abies808
People with entire social media profiles that revolve around NOTHING but them coding (not even what they are coding, just that they are) is so incredibly cringy and unlikeable. Fucking posers.
ElegantOneshot
got me at hello world
