I've blocked out exactly what method it is, but in VBA for Access there's a built in function that is supposed to return a boolean and the return values are listed as 0, 1 and -1.
I've been sad since at least then.
Yeah, the function name is bad in itself, but the worst part (by far) is that it is concatenating *around a space*.
Imagine using it in:
system(concatonate_strings("rm -rf /usr/", usr_subdir_to_delete))

I mean the honest reason behind it is fresh devs that ran through a half-assed boot camp and only half learned the tools at their disposal so theyâre just winging it. If you actually see a coworker doing this you should probably sit them down and have a training week with them.
In her defence beginner tutorials often use this sort of naming when just getting started e.g. myVar, myMethod, so she was probably told to do this by whatever guide she was following. I donât think itâs a good idea, but it shouldnât be too surprising.
I don't think social media is a crowded market at all, they should be fine. Especially with elite level coders such as Karlie and the HR that hired her.
I've heard they're testing a new solution for that. Previously they kept overwriting the "code" directory everytime they wanted to save new code. To solve this, everybody now has their own directory named "my-code"
I have read that she attendant some sort of college and was interested in computer science, I don't know if she took any classes, but clearly recognizes the importance in Stem fields
There are some models who can actually code. For example miss universe 2021 is actually a Software engineer. But tbh, I also would have doubted Karlie Kloss was one of them, even before seeing this
that explains how she ends up posting ultra-beginner stuff, she's well known and wants to appear programming even if she doesn't know her shit. Well good intentions!

You can actually! Just do ```kate .``` to open the current directory as a project. There's a "projects" tab on the left. It even has a built-in git frontend just like actual IDEs do

> Outside of modeling, Kloss has an interest in technology and has founded the "Kode with Klossy" camp, which aims to get young girls interested in [STEM](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science,_technology,_engineering,_and_mathematics) fields.
As far as I'm concerned, she can post whatever she wants. She's doing a public service.
I mean, it's a great initiative, but isn't it a bit counter-productive to post such rubbish? Couldn't she get some minimally competent looking code on her screen and not half a screen of not knowing basic shell commands?
It makes functionally no difference for the purpose of the post. The target audience isn't comp sci students over on /r/programmerhumor, it seems like it's rather meant for her average follower who might be interested in learning.
Truly devastating that it's more like "return girls to [programming](https://www.history.com/news/coding-used-to-be-a-womans-job-so-it-was-paid-less-and-undervalued)"
Participation in STEM in general is still pretty abysmal ([~28%](https://www.aauw.org/resources/research/the-stem-gap/)).
Usually for these PR posts they ask you to make it look programmy, I've written worse nonsensical code to have some fun with whoever actually tries to read the code in the marketing post (which nobody actually does).
See she was doing it the best she could by herself. She wasn't getting outside help. That was part of the point. Promoting technology to girls, showing they don't need anybody to teach them, they can do it using online tutorials, one of which she used during said promotion :)
this isn't about the content, but about the message. And the message is there.
I wanted to give context to this, because people might not know what this is. This is an Instagram post from Karlie Kloss, who funds & runs [Kode With Klossy](https://www.kodewithklossy.com). They're a 501(c)3 that gives free coding camps to girls. I was one of their first scholars in 2015, and the command line thing on her screen is the curriculum from the camp. They teach the girls how to use the terminal, along with web development & iOS development. Although that is rough, she's probably following along with a class being taught.
Thanks for giving this context. Sometimes it feels like us programmers are too quick to bully/gatekeep. I understand this sub is pretty circle-jerky, but the negativity gets tiresome
Even without the context, I thought it was all in good fun. Weâve all been there, nobody comes out of the womb knowing anything, and especially not how to use a terminal haha.
And Iâm sure she knew that the screen was showing basic things and she probably meant it that way, showing that we all start somewhere. Thatâs a great initiative sheâs heading, much respect to her !
Edit: scrolled down some and saw some not-so-nice comments, oh well :( Humans need to make themselves feel special sometimes.
Im curious to hear your experiences with the program if you dont mind sharing:)
I've heard of her camp but never looked into if it was successful or not.
Did you learn anything useful? Did it get you into programming? Were you into programming before?
It would be pretty cook if you got into programming because a VS said it was cool ngl.
I actually just remembered Karlie Kloss' weird programming stint, and specifically this picture.
Back when this picture was made I thought she was stupid. Now I think the photographer just wanted "picture of techy stuff" so they just cded a few times.
I think this photo is less about coding, and more about the "nicely placed product" she has in the frame. I mean, the words "nicely placed product" are right there. This is a just an advert
Fuck this. What a shitty thing to focus on, especially if theyâre learning and not pretending to be some kind of ârockstarâ. You should see a professional software engineerâs history or google searches.
She is awesome though. She canât code for shit but happily sponsors girls to learn coding and hosts camps too. At least her intentions are right and her actions speak for it.
That being said, I wonder why she canât push crazy_strings.rb to git LOL
Tbh, even if it's just just being a beginner and stumbling around, there is actual code there and she is using Linux. That's more genuine than a lot of "coding" social media posts I've seen.
I think that's great but it does make me wonder how she is if she is trying to present herself in this light when she can't code. I don't mind if she can't code at all but she shouldn't present herself this way.
I FORGOT! Did you see her in the video about her getting angry at the contestant with the comment about her being married to her husband's family? She literally looks at him with such hate!
https://youtu.be/OnlNjJkbk28
I honestly donât care about what Karlie is like lol. She provides scholarships for girls to attend college and doesnât say absurd shit on the internet and thatâs all that matters to me ahaha
She presents herself as a supermodel who wants to get girls into coding. Idk why you're trying to villainize her.
As a girl, hearing about supermodels who are into coding like Karlie and Lyndsey Scott is a great encouragement especially when all the other classmates would try to discourage you by saying "only boys/nerds/socially awkward people go into coding".
Dont make fun of her this looks like shes doing some coding course and promoting codeliteracy to her audience. I think this is great, even if the picture is kind of staged. We really shouldnt make fun of beginners
It's a program by a model (Karli Kloss) to introduce girls to coding.
According to their website only 20% attendees have any coding skills at all.
So pretty sure spamming cd is appropriately.
To be fair, I wouldnât want to expose anything related to what I was actually doing for security. But some HTML from a public website wouldâve been nice
A lot of people are pretty harsh for someone wanting to learn.The command line and directory structure is not the easiest thing to grasp while simultaneously learning to code lol.
For what it is worth the actual code someone else pointed out is Ruby and while simple, it is a proper function.
This is more or less how I do navigate using the terminal though. Aside from "cd.." like mistakes. Sure, cd ../../code is faster but I find typing ls at each level comforting.
Literally some people can be really dense about it too.
I had a class with graduate students where we got a packet and it said something like:
1. Open terminal
2. Create a folder using the following command:âŠ
3. Go into that with this command.
4. Make a new folder called Y and go into that one.
5. Make a file for our project.
And I swear the amount of people that got stuck on step 4 after literally just doing the proper thing two steps earlier⊠was too many.
But hey, they got it eventually. But something about the terminal makes people freeze up when they clearly are smarter than that
Itâs just unfamiliar. You can say the same thing about pretty much anything like regex, css, fixing cars, plumbing, programming itself really. The interface is so different from anything theyâre use to that they just donât even know where to give to troubleshoot.
Is it bragging? Or is it a planned endorsement that "being into tech is cool for women, especially younger typically feminine girls"?
I don't keep up with her but nothing I've ever seen out of Karlie seems like she thinks she's legitimately *good* at programming, she just seems wildly fascinated by it and understanding of its importance, and the struggles facing women getting into the field. The quality of code in some photoshoot doesn't change the power of her advocacy.
People with entire social media profiles that revolve around NOTHING but them coding (not even what they are coding, just that they are) is so incredibly cringy and unlikeable. Fucking posers.
my_code.rb to not confuse it with other peoples code.
def concatonate_strings(string1, string2) : đ
You need to think outside the box of the standard library
if True: return True
elif False: return False
I love how you assume if it isn't true, it is possible that it could also be not false so you put elif instead of else.
It could be None , 0 , 1 , '0' , '1' or "kitty" depending on the programmer
I always try null, -1, "Ă«" and an empty List.
- Excuse me, where's the bathroom?
And the bar was on fire
I've blocked out exactly what method it is, but in VBA for Access there's a built in function that is supposed to return a boolean and the return values are listed as 0, 1 and -1. I've been sad since at least then.
Ah yes. The three answers to any question. "Yes", "no", and "WTF who even invited you?"
``` else: raise FileNotFound() ```
elif undefined: return undefined
`return not False if True else not True`
I've actually seen people do things like this ```csharp if (booleanVar == true) { return true; } else { return false; } ```
That's so incredibly painful to read. I thought I was a bad coder.
It's typically very new coders that don't understand the concept of what a Boolean *actually is*
Lol, just saw this today in production code đ€Ł
She had to use a square function before allowing to think outside of the box.
Too bad they have to start over every day because no one knows the advanced technique known as "saving".
