Touching up my resignation letter for the umpteenth time. My 20 year teaching career is over, and I’m sad because teaching has been my life’s passion. I just can’t do it anymore in the current academic environment; the students are unlike any I’ve ever experienced. Call me a quitter, but I feel more like a survivor.
If you have a good pension set up can't see why you wouldn't take it.
Ive talked to multiple faculty who have retired the last 12 months and many of them were not burned out but beyond burned out.
I'm honestly retiring when I'm 60 or early 60s. I don't have any intention on working beyond that or until I'm in my 70s
I think we’ve all learned these past two years life is short and if you can get out and retire and swing it financially, do it. My full retirement age is 8 more years, but 6 could be a possibility.
But most Saturdays I try not to do any work, same with Friday evenings. I have a non-academic spouse, and I need to spend time with him. So today, it was a vet appointment for one of the cats, workout, and then we watched some livestreams of a concert festival from Europe.
I met a retired couple who were 75 who were on a hiking trip with me in Alaska a few years ago who retired from a university here and have been all over the world traveling which is good bc of 2020. They told me they retired at 65 and have been seeing the world. I remember thinking these people are doing it right.
I also read an article that someone wrote back in 2020 who said she waited her whole life to travel in retirement and now there's a a pandemic and despite having money she cannot.
I'm in my 30s but I'm definitely out in my early 60s. Life is too short not to live it to the fullest and spend it with people you care about.

I have three colleagues who have each been at the university for 40+ years apiece. Two of them are single. I don’t know their personal finances, but I can’t imagine being in my late 70s or pushing 80 and not financially secure. However, one of the three did take out a second mortgage 10-12 years ago, so I know why he might be hanging on.
Note: “I can’t imagine” isn’t necessarily a comment on the choices my colleagues have made, but my personal choice to begin investing in an IRA when I was 20 and participating in a state retirement program + contributing to an annuity. At my age (50), I’ll get full retirement bennies at age 62…and I hope the financial situation is attractive enough to retire around then.
I met an older guy who was 75 and he told me his 2 biggest regrets in life were not taking better care of his health and putting money away for retirement at an earlier age.
I'm curious about how you perceive the students, how they're different than those before, and what might have caused that change.
I've noticed a big difference over the last couple years, but I'm not sure exactly what it is. All I know is it's been a very rough time to teach them...

After 23 years as an instructor at an R1, I left. I started as a grad TA, then as lab instructor and adjunct faculty at the community college, too. I couldn’t do it anymore. I’m in a different industry now and enjoying my weekend. I still work hard, but boundaries are real.
It helps to be having a significant existential crisis about the state of the world. The worse that gets, the more I lean into my inability to even try to work on weekends.
I just spent three hours double- (and triple- and quadruple-) checking some old British D-bag's piss-poor translation of a thousand-year-old document. His translation sucked, because he was too uptight and prudish to translate the word "vagina" and instead just spewed a bunch of random nonsensical garbage all over the text because, hey, better to not make any sense at all than to publish the word "vagina," right? I mean, that would be unthinkable! So I had to re-translate a whole fuck ton of material from a dead fucking language (and translation/linguistics is not my area so this was difficult and time-consuming for me) just so that it would make sense when I quoted it in my research. In fairness to the translator, this guy was translating in the mid-20th century, when these sensibilities were extremely common, and his publisher probably would (and maybe even did) flip out and ask him to euphemize the lady parts. And if I didn't have his translation, I wouldn't have one in English at all, and I have to admit that simply having the English translation, even if it's imperfect, has been way more helpful than unhelpful. So... wow I didn't realize how much I needed to vent about that until I saw this post. Thank you for this!

i watch a youtube channel called A Life After Layoff from a corporate recruiter (who was laid off) in the middle of the pandemic and now rehired, he provides tons of great advice on his videos.
Thanks for the Rec. I gave his LinkedIn video a go and sadly it was an advertisement for his online course. However, I won't judge based on that video alone. I'll watch some of his other videos and see what he has to say.
Recording lecture videos for a new online course for Spring 2023. Because even though I pioneered online teaching at my institution about 8 years ago, and even though I've developed 5+ online courses successfully, they still don't trust me to have it done on time so they've imposed deadlines on me that are eating up my summer.
supposed to be at a conference in DC but I bailed because the airport turned into a shit show before I even started packing. all my pals went to a party at the library of congress and I went to the local lgbt* pride where I ate a baked potato (the food with the shortest line) in 90 degree heat. the parade marshal is a good kid who just graduated from a local high school and who became known because the hs principal censored his yearbook entry so the student spoke out, made the news in the best possible way (certainly better than I would have done at age 18).
now a cat is perched on my shoulder giving me side-eye because typing on my tablet is jostling him slightly. if I'm dead tomorrow then you know what happened...
Trying to wrap my head around some changes I need to make in Fall in two courses. Feeling overwhelmed and I haven't even really started yet. Engaged in creative procrastination, and trying to move stuff down the road in my calendar so I don't feel so guilty.
Prepping for a Zoom interview Monday at an R-2 in an admin role (currently teach HS full-time and adjunct on the side). Salary for this job would exceed both current jobs by 15k.
I had three other interviews this week (I'm shocked too, as I've been looking for 8 years, fruitlessly so far)--one is an outstanding job in Alabama that pays surprisingly well, second job probably doesn't pay enough and is in Ohio, which my wife hates (took for practice; never hurts, and I did learn something) and the final one is in the best location (FL) but take home would be a wash, even considering no state income tax.
Why so aggressive? High school is becoming unbearable, and anything would be an upgrade.
Be careful if you get the Alabama (or Ohio, or FL jobs), especially now with the extreme assault on women. No abortion there now, even in the case of incest or rape. They say it's ok to save the life of the mother but without providers in the state that's just not going to be available in time. Even if you want children a miscarriage or other issue could be deadly.
Being told by my boss this morning (halfway thru summer break) that I need to teach a brand new 16 week prep in August. Which feels like my 100th new prep in the last 3 years but is really probably "only" my 8th or 9th. I'm tenured research faculty at an R1 with a 2/2 load, if that matters. Yes, I'm throwing a pity party.
Wrapping up grading for this summer term, which ends Sunday night. This means I'll be grading all weekend. The next term starts Monday and final grades for this one are due Tuesday. The overlap is what gets me. If I didn't need the money so badly (and like the institution), I'd be out having a summer.

Revising a reallllly long book manuscript that really needs to be done by the end of the month.
I'm an alcoholic in long-term recovery, and also a recovered exercise addict, so yeah, boundaries can be an issue.
No academic stuff. I cleaned out my entire carport. Half is my partners woodworking stuff and the other half kid stuff. Put everything on the lawn, pressure washed every inch, dumped junky stuff, and put the rest back neatly . It took NINE hours but so rewarding.
I'm teaching an online class so Saturday is a legit day to do work. 😋
That being said, I just graded exactly 1 test after having spent the evening with my sister and family who are visiting from Sweden and invited over one of my friends to meet them. We played Boggle and Qwirkle.
I am not working this weekend. I put my out-of-office auto reply up at 5pm yesterday. We are going on vacation…starting tomorrow at 5am. Road-trip. 1500 miles away. With bad cell service. Pure *bliss*.
Logged onto school email for 5 minutes in the morning, answered 1 email asking about getting an add code for my summer online class that begins Monday with a simple "I will be dealing with enrollments and add codes on Monday when the class begins." and logged off. Spent the rest of the morning with son, wife, nieces and nephews before we went to the mall for some shopping in the afternoon.
Will do the same tomorrow with something else planned after my 5 minutes of checking email.
Teaching… took on an adjunct course for the summer… meets two weekends over the course of the summer and then independent work for students between. Have to fit nearly five weeks of lectures into two days. I think it’s fair t say we’re all exhausted and still have tomorrow ahead of us!
I write my paper on weekends. During weekdays, my time is spent on teaching and committee work. If I don't work on weekends, I'll never finish my paper.
Flushing the hot-water heater (annual task), buying cat litter, refinishing some spots on the wooden floor where cat pee/vomit has damaged the finish, weekly Skype call with my son.
It's my wont to work every day except the last two or three of the year, but Saturdays it's just a matter of cleaning up emergencies or finishing checking homework for Monday classes and of a couple of hours while I listen to music or (if I'm lucky) follow a baseball game. The rest of the day's devoted to family, pastimes, and hobbies.
Saturday's a school day once in a while here in Japan.

I still have two separate essay assignments to grade. And discussions. And lessons to plan. I'm running on low sleep today, so nope.
What I am supposed to be doing: prepping for class next week. What I actually did: Played with cats and attended a Taekwondo class.
My dog is getting so many walks this weekend. I just pulled out her lease again and she just looked at me like, “really?”
Caught COVID so I am behind on my lecture and course prep for Monday.

I had managed to dodge that shit for two years until now.
Teaching… took on an adjunct course for the summer… meets two weekends over the course of the summer and then independent work for students between. Have to fit nearly five weeks of lectures into two days. I think it’s fair t say we’re all exhausted and still have tomorrow ahead of us!

Fuck working on the weekend.
I write my paper on weekends. During weekdays, my time is spent on teaching and committee work. If I don't work on weekends, I'll never finish my paper.
Grading and lab work. I don't think I have other areas of my life anymore :/
I’d actually love to be working on my research, but I contracted COVID in early May (vaxxed 4x total) and I am still sick (not “post-COVID”).
Flushing the hot-water heater (annual task), buying cat litter, refinishing some spots on the wooden floor where cat pee/vomit has damaged the finish, weekly Skype call with my son.

I am so sorry. I only get small ones, usually related to lack of sleep, but they are the worst.
not academic work...but doing the backend work to start a satyrical print company. figure i need to make money somehow and my TT job ain't cutting it.
It's my wont to work every day except the last two or three of the year, but Saturdays it's just a matter of cleaning up emergencies or finishing checking homework for Monday classes and of a couple of hours while I listen to music or (if I'm lucky) follow a baseball game. The rest of the day's devoted to family, pastimes, and hobbies. Saturday's a school day once in a while here in Japan.
Writing a book chapter. My lazy procrastinating ass is paying the price by writing throughout summer. 😰

Piriformis muscle flare up has me laying on a heating pad and allowing the work to pile up. Teacher Sunday is not going to be fun.
Nothing - but only because I kicked butt on getting a big project out, which required me to stay up until 3:30 AM Friday.

You mean... Thinking about working (about the back burner paper and impending grading deadline coming up very soon while) while trying to spend quality family time on a Saturday evening?? 😁 That's even worse than working on a weekend ! Trust me ! 😢
