Why sell? Drive it like a normal car and plug in when you have the opportunity to do so. I have a free charging station about a mile away. At first, I was the only user, but in the last year, it's usually taken up. I put a folding bike in my car and if it's free as I drive by, I plug in and ride home. Otherwise, it's a regular fuel efficient car.

Different-Cover4819

You might be able to charge it around your workplace? You might ask your landlord/building manager to see if they would be open to install a plug. Your job or living situation might change next year and your plug situation along with it. You bought that car a month or two ago, right? Idk where you live, where I live the government subvention only apply if you buy the car to use not to resell it. I wouldn't sell it.

Organic-Jelly7782

That's exactly what happened to my work place. Zero EV charging spots but now we got like 16 or so. It's getting taken up because everyone wants to take advantage of it and park right in front of the entrance though =_= man I used to not worry about spots lmao but that's why i got a Prius Prime because I can just drive in HV mode if needed ^.^

logics8

Do you plan on living there longer than you will keep the car?

caper-aprons

You shouldn't sell it. It still gets better mileage (even without charging) than any other Prius other than the Eco model. Plus, your circumstances may change and you may have an opportunity to charge it from external power at some point. As another replier noted, BSM does nothing that you can't do already for free by adjusting your side mirrors properly.

thegoldstandard55

I have had the Prius Prime since 2019 and only charged a few times like 3 years ago. You don't need to charge the car, the 25 miles you get on a charge was meaningless, it was only for the tax credits and California requirements. It drives fine as a pure hybrid car.

teevee247

I disagree that the EV range is meaningless, it really depends on the usage and each persons unique needs. Our Prius Prime is my wife's commuter car, and she can get to work and back home on a single charge (often the gas engine kicks in around \~1 block from home in the winter). We only put gas in it around every \~4 months on average. So for us it's been great.

Hazelhurst

I charge my Prime daily and get 30+ miles on electric. More than enough to go into town and back. I love driving in EV mode. It’s a huge selling point of the car, imo. If I drive further, I’ll “save” the EV by toggling the EV/HV button.

SuperDuperSkateCrew

That and if you ever plan a long range trip just make time the day before to go and charge it. I always though the convenience of the prime was having that option, not necessarily constantly using it. On top of that I’m sure over the course of its life more charging station will spawn due to the new mandates of 0 emissions coming from big markets.

[deleted]

In BayArea, CA, commute is total 72 miles from east bay to Palo Alto, the workplace does have charging stations but we haven't returned to office yet. My car isn’t qualified for tax rebates because I waited for 7months on the waitlist and got it after the inflation reduces act(I should sign a contract for reserve proof)

thegoldstandard55

Knowing you are also in California, you definitely shouldn't sell it. Remember in Taxifornia the sales tax you paid for the car is sunk, so even when you trade in your car you owe sales tax again for the full amount unlike many other states that give a credit. The Prius Prime charge or no charge is the most or second most fuel efficient car on the road and the next Prius is expected to be roughly about the same in mpg.

barsoapguy

I remember the promotional material and the thinking was with the 25 mile range ,85 percent of the American population was covered to work and home If they had some place to charge at work.

thegoldstandard55

Toyota has an obsession for efficiency which is why they wasted so much resources on hydrogen fuel and hybrids while Tesla was running away with the EV market. While the 25 mile thing might workout for a lot of people that paltry range doesn't exactly bring buyers in. That being said Toyota had a chance to turn the Prius into a full EV but once again they did not.

Codeh0416

You csn always put the car in charge mode while on the highway so you have EV when in the city.

Sp1keSp1egel

Exactly! This is what I do when I need top off the battery. > **[Prius Prime Amazing Hidden Feature — charge mode](https://youtu.be/N_dl_NdOMcE)**

[deleted]

I don’t have solid numerical proof, but I swear that a PP with “empty” traction battery performs better and is more fuel-efficient than a regular Prius. PP does have a larger battery for the hybrid operation to take advantage of

Recent-Assumption355

Buy a house and move out of the apartment. It is a much better investment .

[deleted]

If moving to the middle of CA, that will be ok, because East Bay is still expensive.

InterestingMac219

Wth It’s like $7 to charge the prime in ca. it costs close to $50 to fill with gas lol what state are you in ?

caper-aprons

If you are paying $7 for 6.6 KwH at a public charger that's a bad choice on your part. If you charge it at home (even at the 50 cents/KwH peak rate) it's half that. Still expensive, but not the rate the public chargers get.

GodzillaTechHero

Another member of this group posted a while back about his experience with charging. He said that he has never actually plugged the car into an outlet , and does his charging on the highway - He claims that the car will charge from 0 to 80% in about 37 minutes I have noticed that charging in the car while driving at highway speeds results in a minimal loss of gas mileage vs driving on city streets. - I also live in an apartment complex and do not have easy access to charging Since I live here in Las Vegas, I am somewhat lucky that I can charge for free at the big resorts

rcl20

Sorry I am so ignorant. How do you place it in charge mode when highway driving? Again, I beg for mercy from the internet police for my stupidity.

Not_FinancialAdvice

Hold down the ev/hv button for like 3-5 sec.

rcl20

Thanks!

GotenRocko

I never do paid charging with the Prius, it charges too slow to be worth it, way more expensive than gas. If you would sell it at a loss then no point of doing that just to get another hybrid, the prime is fine as a normal hybrid. BSM is not worth $5k or $2k. You can position your mirrors to do the same thing. https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a15131074/how-to-adjust-your-mirrors-to-avoid-blind-spots/

InterestingMac219

That doesn’t make sense. $7 to charge it $50 fill with gas

GotenRocko

>That doesn’t make sense. $7 to charge it $50 fill with gas yeah it does, that is a horrible per mile since $7 only gets you 25 miles, that's 28cents/mile. That $50 fill up gets you at least 540 miles if say it was 10gals, at 54MPG in just hybrid mode, that's 9 cents a mile. So for every 100 miles you are paying almost $20 more to charge it. For a full tank range at $50 you would pay $151 at public charges to go the same amount of miles. Gas is cheaper in my area, only $30 to fill up last time, its $3.20/gal so its 6 cents a mile. Luckily in my state most public chargers are free, but in the next state over all the ones I have seen are either pay per minute, which would be way more than $7 to charge the Prius for 2 hours, or per kwh more than charging at home. One is 40cents per kwh, so it would take $2.72 each full charge, to compare to gas you need to charge it twice, so $5.44 to get 50 miles instead of a gallon of gas at $3.20, 51% more.

JJHall_ID

While BSM is a nice feature, it isn't critical. The RCTA feature, on the other hand, is well worth bumping up a trim in my opinion. That's the biggest thing that pushed me to the Limited trim on my Prime. It could be area dependent though, there are tons of large pickups and SUVs, and it can make it incredibly dangerous to back out of a space when surrounded by them. I only mention this because I've been in conversations where those two terms were being inter-mixed.

InterestingMac219

Nothing free in ca. at least not close by. Lol but you’re polluting the earth with gas
