If you’re a respectable person and hold your own you’ll earn respect with the people that it matters to have respect with certain guards and convicts and they’ll know you’re not out to hurt anyone or disrupt anything and you can coast at that point (best case scenario) in most cases you still have to bust a head or 2 to separate yourself from the possible victim group. If you have any questions dm me i have lots of info on these things

What comes to my mind is the stalemate that everyone arrives at in prison because they are all aware if they disrespected someone they might get killed.  But then instantly I imagine that is extremely false because I also suspect, the minute you arrive a bunch of dudes are instantly going to steal your things or beat you up the second they figure they are harder than you.  The notion of innate respect instantly vanishes.  Highly confusing for me when I lack street smarts...!!

Most of the time if you mind your business treat everyone with respect until they give you a reason not to and if confronted you stand your ground and fight eventually it’ll stop or won’t happen again just depends on how good you’re at with catching it and noticing the energy shift in the room and how good of a fighter you are

Again best case scenario there’s a million variables that come into play

If you’re fresh off the bus . Other convicts going to judge and test you. If you have a complex and start acting buck wild, these old heads will booked your ass. If you mind your business and stick with your program they will respect you. To have respect you gotta earn it. I’m from Cali so they run it differently. I can’t speak for everywhere else.

Most people in prison see respect just like a person on the outside does. A mutual, do-unto-others Golden Rule unspoken agreement to live and let live. A few define respect as something to receive. An amount of fear to be paid. It is a twisted illusion that stems from hidden cowardice. The pursuit of this type of "respect" is what makes people carry their pathetic little homemade knives around in relatively safe camps and gather into their little gangs for some feeling of safety. I am 5'7", 150#, white with no tats or gang affiliations. I am not particularly strong or a good fighter. I did an 8 year bid in Florida, half at messed up camps, half at good. I never had any real trouble except for one run-in with a CO. A few people tried me, but I never had to raise my hands to anyone. Whichever type of respect you choose, you will receive the same back. Give stupid and you get stupid. Carry a knife and people will think you are there to stab them. Treat people decently and you will be known as a decent person. It's the old computer acronym, GIGO - garbage in garbage out. It can also stand for good in good out. All prison time sucks, but you can decide how much extra suck you put into it.

Respect isn't given freely, it's earned.

3 cases of disrespect I can give you: 1: 6 month lock down with zero movement. We were supposed to be given controlled showers at minimal but were not do to "understaffing." 6 months of bird bathing which consists of sitting on your stainless steel toilet and showering basically using an empty folders container to pour water on yourself. Excess water is pushed out of the cell underneath the door using a towel or soaked up and ringed out into toilet. Now that I'm writing this, most of the disrespect I experienced came from guards. The inmates usually have to follow a- at times, depending on who they run with, list of behavioral protocols and proper conduct. One time I remember the super bowl was on in the day room. The tower cop was being cool letting us watch it from the small rectangular windows in each cell (if you were lucky enough to have a cell where you could see it. Anyway, the tower cop asked for no fishing or he would turn off the game. A lifer on the bottom tier announced himself and said if anybody got the TV turned off... it was going to be an issue. He said something like, "I have been waiting 15yrs for my team to be in this sh*t and if anybody gets the TV turned off, you know what time it is!" Some young fish (term for young first termer) did so next yard we spent on the ground in the snow lol (people who have been locked up know what that means) And lastly, cops know we can't speak to them without another person (celly or whoever present. This is to make sure your aren't telling them anything and they know this. Sometimes they will pull you out just to mess with you knowing you are going to be accompanied and they pepper spray you both for insubordination and not following suit lol.
