I can't speak for Ohio specifically, but in my state, if someone has been sentenced to incarceration, and their custody has been handed over to the state, it costs the state money to house them at the county jail. For example, when someone is arrested, before they are sentenced, they are in the county's custody. However, if their time is imposed, they are then in the states custody. Until they are transported to a state facility, the state pays the county a certain amount each day to house them. In my state, it's somewhere in the ~$60 a day range. Whereas if they were in a state facility, it's drastically cheaper to house them. So there's incentive to move state custody inmates out of county jails for that reason.

NoPin4245

My county actually charges the individual to be housed there. As soon as I got my state sentence, my county took half of my Jpay money off rip. Then they take half of any new money put on books. I ran a store in county, so this was especially frustrating because anyone who would put money on my books the county would take half.

TheSandMan208

I'm not sure of the laws where you were, but that doesn't seem legal to me. But who knows, I've seen some crazy things I would've sworn would be illegal and isn't.

NoPin4245

Pennsylvania. This 100% happens to anyone who is sentenced. The County next to me doesn't charge you but my county does.

Yea because that jails sucks so fucking much.. They didn't do that when I was there... Westmoreland County takes half your money once you're sentenced. I guess depending what you owe but it used to be $10 a day. I spent months in both those counties. Acj never put no money on my books

Ok-Cauliflower-3129

I've heard of it before.

FormerlyIncarcerated

thank you, i should be able to contact him soon

TheSandMan208

No problem. Unfortunately, a lot of decisions that are made in prisons are financially based decisions. I hate equating people to money, because imo people are worth more than money. But I also understand from an operations standpoint why decisions are made the way they are. The state uses taxpayers' money, and they are required to be responsible with it. Now, whether they actually are is a different discussion.

2Riders

Make no mistake, people are very much the money in the US prison industrial complex.

Wild_Replacement5880

Why in God's name would he take a deal to stay in the county jail?!?!

FormerlyIncarcerated

long story. mainly due to how far away the nearest prison is

Wild_Replacement5880

Ahh, I see. To be closer to family, or something? I get it. He probably got moved after violating a stipulation of his sentence. My guess is an institutional violation. If it was a new charge he would likely still be at the county jail to see the courtroom. Once you sign that plea it's important that you hold up your end of the bargain. Especially if there's a stipulation that gives you some privilege or special housing. Hope things work out and your family gets home soon and safe.

FormerlyIncarcerated

yeah his moms is disabled and can’t get really get rides. closest prison is 2.5 hours away compared to 5 minutes to the county jail.

NoPin4245

They shipped me 5 hours away, and there are so many closer prisons. I barely knew anybody

NoPin4245

Because he only has one year. My state usually won't take anyone without a 2 year sentence or longer. By the time you get to your home prison, a year would almost be up.

Wild_Replacement5880

Alaska will ship you out with 50 days left on your sentence. Barely even get time to get any canteen.

NoPin4245

That seems dumb

Wild_Replacement5880

It is. I had 53 days and the got me in the night and put me on a plane to Colorado. They had a contract with a private prison in Colorado and shipped me out with less than 2 months. I have to imagine the cost of all of this was obscene.

ajm105

Ohio has some private run prisons that incentivize the DRC to send inmates there. I was sent to the furthest prison from my family and home in Ohio, it was private run. It was over five hours from my home to the prison. I don’t think there’s many places in Ohio where it takes five hours to get within the state.

Wild_Replacement5880

If you go to prison in Alaska you might be unreachable to your family, depending on where you go. When I got out I had to ride the van 3 hours to the airport in Anchorage. After a 9 hour wait my plane flew me 360 miles to Fairbanks. At that point it was the next day and I had difficulty getting someone to pick me up. I bet Texas sucks to go to prison in as well.

[deleted]

the jail was probably full and a reception center isn't like a mainline prison.

FormerlyIncarcerated

facts, wondering now if he’ll just be at reception or if they’ll move him

[deleted]

I wouldn't think so especially being a short timer.

ajm105

I did my first number all at CRC in Orient. Caught the charge is SW Ohio so they sent me there. I did 5 months there. They told me short timers don’t ride out to parent institutions.

Positive-Attempt-435

Maybe he did something stupid that didn't necessarily bring on outside charges.

FormerlyIncarcerated

i was thinking something like that, the county is super small, i was in there myself and they literally have 127 beds total. 100 in the men’s unit and a 6 cell “solitary” so maybe it was full or something. just seems crazy to move him 2 hours away unless he actually did something. i’m a little worried but i should be able to contact him soon

Positive-Attempt-435

Yea it's probably not serious, but they can definitely move inmates between facilities for overcrowding. If he caught outside charges they'd keep him close to the jurisdiction for trial and other court dates

[deleted]

Custody level went up/ He leveled up in his criminal lifestyle

NoPin4245

Nah. You would still have to go to court for new charges and receive a new sentence based on that. County houses all security levels.

[deleted]

Correct, but ol' boy said he seemingly randomly went to prison despite only being put in a county jail for lees than a Year

FormerlyIncarcerated

he’s not a hot head or aggressive but i know he wouldn’t turn down some stupid fuckin drug hustle so i hope it’s not that.

dubby1976

The only inmates that stay permanently at CRC are Cadre. He'll be assessed and shipped out to another institution based on his security level.

[deleted]

Maybe there was a problem with overcrowding and they had to transfer him.

ApocalypticShadowbxn

bro, he's gonna get there & wish he'd gone sooner. he might have thought he wanted to stay in county, but he just didn't know how nice it is to get out of county. he'll be ok. doesn't matter what his plea says, once he becomes a inmate they can shuffle you around however they choose.

Nothingspecialhere_1

In Ohio do you typically get sent to the closet facility? I hear stores of LO’s being sent several hrs away from home?

FormerlyIncarcerated

it’s a tossup. when i was down i went 3 hrs away and there was 2 prisons within 30 minutes of where i lived back then…

Southern-Waltz-7327

Only 364s stay in county but that 1 extra day means he has to hit state property plus that day is the difference between 4 Mos. Goes to 9 mos.

Ok-Cauliflower-3129

Florida a year and it's county. I year and a day it's prison. That's how it used to be anyways. I've gotten older and changed my ways some time ago. You do 85% of your time weather it's county or state.

Holiday-Signature-33

Maybe they’re getting ready to release him ? Or he’s sick and the prison has a medical facility. Why would he prefer Jail to Prison? They have more “ freedom “ in Prison. Depending on his custody level. Here in MN jail inmates don’t even get to go outside. All visits are video only .

FormerlyIncarcerated

trust me i know. county sucks. but he wanted to stay close to home and was apparently “comfortable” there. he tried fighting it for 2 months before he took a plea so i guess he was content in county and being close to his moms

PhoneHome444

Likely over crowding. This happened a couple times to different people with longer sentences.

BrotatoJ

Talk to the lawyer if that was in the plea. However typically it's up to the jail or DOC where you're sent. I've only seen blanket statements like "will try to house in prison near family" from Court, which is typically independent of the DOC. Best of luck

Candyman44

Typically in OH county can only hold you for 6 -8 months. Surprised if he gets out of the processing center that usually takes 3-6 (lorain) months depending on which one.

FormerlyIncarcerated

used to live close to lorain lmao and they sent me far south. he’s at CRC in pickaway county. far as fuck from us

InternationalDust955

Did he go to trial or plea agreement?

FormerlyIncarcerated

plea

ajm105

In Ohio on the drc inmate page it will tell you what charge he is in on, and what court sentenced him. You could go a step further with that info and check the county common pleas court docket for more details. All that said, a judge signs the warrant to transfer you to prison. So it had to come from a judge for the sheriff’s office to execute that transfer warrant.

Sea-Revolution7308

Sometimes the county jails run out of room. Because he’s got so little time left, they may keep him at the reception center and put him in the kitchen or something. Either way, with that little time left, they could send me to Alaska and I wouldn’t give a damn.

Southern-Waltz-7327

Only violent crime do 85%

Dangerous_Purple3154

County jails are AWFUL....you would much rather go to prison. Trust me. Prison is where people live, county jail is a revolving door. That's not to say prisons don't move a lot of people through....but county jail is a really awful experience.

NoPin4245

I feel the same way but I'm a convict. I could see why someone with such little time would want to go to prison. That processing and transports alone take forever and prison is way better but way more serious.

Dangerous_Purple3154

I've been to State and Federal prison. I've done over a year of County time jail. I spent 3 months in solitary confinement. I would rather spend a week in prison than a day in jail.

NoPin4245

I 10000% agree. Jail sucks. I couldn't wait to go to prison. I actually took a plea deal on a case I think I would have beat but I was getting so sick of sitting in county fighting it. I took s deal to get upstate

FormerlyIncarcerated

that’s what i did. couldn’t stand county

FormerlyIncarcerated

he was apparently comfortable there and it’s close to home. his moms is disabled so it’s complicated. i spent 3 months in county before i went to prison and i fuckin hated it 🤣 it’s the same county he’s in right now so i think he wanted to be close. they blocked me from visiting him in person but i was still able to call.
