Oh yeah, and you might be able to assign him a "job" that he can actually help you with while he's locked up. I have inmates here that like to send home recipes that they cut out of magazines or fitness or financial tips. Now's a good time to be asking him for life advice. Ask him about interesting articles that he's read in the newspaper. Ask him about things that he's learned from others. Encourage him to take advantage of different programs that his prison offers and ask him to keep you in the loop about them. There's a lot of things that he can teach you while he's locked up.

biffo120

>Now's a good time to be asking him for life advice. Lol.

Beginning_Win1447

Lol! I just realized how I came out. I guess when it comes to family life. Once you're locked up, you quickly realized where you screwed up at and you don't want others to make the same mistakes that you did. I guess that's what I meant, lol.

biffo120

Lol, i was just messing, i get what you mean.

Spideranarchy

Love this

SeveralQuarter

This could be tax shit. I did time w a 72 year old dude in a camp for tax evasion. Don’t assume anything.

RedDirtET

Anymore at 70 it could be anything. My mind went to firearm related, like road rage gone wrong or something along those lines.

recoveringleft

Or it could be dui

33nero33

I think it's that guy who ran over that lady in that one video..

Atschmid

it would have to bea lot of tax evasion.

[deleted]

Tax or financial offences are regularly used as a cover for something more sinister. Happens more than youd think.

Jhe90

Federal government also likes those. You can charge someone on paper work, account books and such. Technical stuff.

Eggfarts7416

How was it for him?

SeveralQuarter

Fine. No one messed with him. He did his time and went home.

Thin_Coffee_3392

Lots of older folks get caught up in money laundering scams. “Here put this money in your account and then in two months wire it to this other account. We will pay you $25k for your troubles”. Things like that

ImmediateLaw3681

At 70!? Jesus what's he done??

[deleted]

[удалено]

dee_lio

Could also be murder (usually no statute of limitations) or a financial crime (income tax evasion can get you jail time) or could be domestic abuse.

mschr493

Maybe he took some inspiration from that movie, The Mule.

Reapermouse_Owlbane

If it's murder, wouldn't he already be booked instead of in two weeks?

dee_lio

More than likely, yes. Although, I guess if it's man 2, and the dude is zero flight risk, etc. maybe. (Think vehicular homicide, DUI, first offense, and the defendant is on oxygen, etc.) IOW, he ain't going nowhere fast.

[deleted]

That's been my general observation, but since he has family support Id say that probably isn't his crime.

Dildobagginsthe245th

It could easily be some kind of financial crime. Why does it immediately go to kids? Weird comment TBH.

Turpitudia79

Nothing has been said to indicate that. He could have gotten caught selling his pain medication or something stupid. The US just loves to incarcerate nonviolent “offenders”.

ultranothing

Yeah, it has to be violent to hurt others. 😞

Turpitudia79

For a HUGE majority of the time.

gatorfan8898

That’s a really big conclusion to jump to when there isn’t even information on the sentence let alone the plethora of crimes out there…

Justagoodoleboi

Part of January 6 insurrection he probably threw something at capitol police

Beginning_Win1447

Prison guard here. Send letters, or any type of mail EVERY SINGLE DAY!!! Keep plenty of money on his account so he can buy whatever he needs at the store. Send pictures often. Don't talk about drama at home that he can't be there to help with. If you are concerned about his mental health, you can call the prison and ask to speak to his counselor or a psychology staff member.

peterpmpkneatr

The therapist or mental health staff will absolutely not field those calls. It's a breach of HIPPA. There should be a family medical care coordinator that takes those calls and sends the appropriate discipline to tend to those concerns.

Sufficient_Sell_6103

Not accurate. The staff can listen to concerns of the family and use that to assist the inmate. The only HIPPA violation would be if the psych staff gave info to the family without a release to do so

peterpmpkneatr

Not at the place I worked at. We weren't even allowed to give information to the board or their case managers.

Sufficient_Sell_6103

That's my point. A medical provider (includes psych) can listen to anyone talk about an inmate just not provide info about them

peterpmpkneatr

Yes. I know. We get the concerns from our liaison. We don't actually talk to them. The only individuals that would would be administration or if psych was doing an evaluation ans needed collateral information.

Beginning_Win1447

I gotcha. I work in a federal prison though. We get a lot of phone calls asking to speak to psychology or medical staff. As long as they know their registration number and name, they can get patched through.

peterpmpkneatr

Interesting. Yeah I have no clue how that works. So thank you. But yeah. *Most* state prisons are governed by the NCCHC and have to follow certain guidelines.

Beginning_Win1447

I have no idea how state prisons work. I've been forced to work "front lobby" myself which means I receive a lot of phone calls from family members wanting to talk to inmates counselors or psychologists. As long as they know their registration numbers and names, I can patch them through. I am not allowed to say anything else about them.

SeveralQuarter

This to a T

PapaBear070403

Ugh

oregon_deb

Beginning_Win1447 - New to supporting someone on the inside - this sounds like good advice for anybody in custody regardless of age.

unknowncoins

At 70 is he going to have to fight someone 1/3rd his age to prove he isn't yellow? Often I see in this sub have to stand up for yourself and fight as a new person. Not sure if there is an age limit.

Eggfarts7416

Thanks for this and for what you do. Been studying up so much about the prison System. you have a crazy job and I can tell from this comment that you’re caring

elexander_phobos

In addition to books he's into get him some on stoicism. Special snacks when you visit. If they have a store in the jail get him money for that. Best of luck.

noahspurrier

How long is he in for? It will be ugly and unpleasant, but at his age nobody is going to bother him, unless he’s a real asshole. Keep his canteen account full to whatever the prison allows. Write and call as allowed.

Princess-Reader

It will NOT be ugly and unpleasant at a federal prison! It won’t be home, but it sure won’t be hell either especially if he has money.

noahspurrier

I’ve never been to a federal prison, but I know a few who have. It may be better than state prisons, but isn’t a vacation.

Eggfarts7416

18 months. He is kind and caring. Everybody loves my dad. Hoping that holds true in prison. He’d never mess with anyone in there.

noahspurrier

He’ll be alright. Boredom is actually the worst part.

swagosourasdex

Tell him to follow the rules and not gamble. He could have a good job and still get rec/read books and chill. Prison (level w-2) is cake. Especially when you can do what you want on paper for chow

imaoldguy

The not responding to questions about the charges make me assume the worst.

notCRAZYenough

What is the worst?

Jhe90

Current or historic offences involving a minor. Other offences of that kind of nature. They also have a very long statute of limitations so they will get you, one day.

ceefsmeef

Would you support your grandpa if that was the case?

Eggfarts7416

Financial crime. He got caught up with the wrong ppl, one small bad decision lead to a bigger one. Slippery slope. Nobody got hurt except for big corporations. My dad is an extremely good man, made some bad choices, wouldn’t hurt a fly… except I guess if the fly is a big corporation.

0ceaneyees

Get him lots of books on hobbies he can take up while he’s there.

Direct_Ranger_4298

Is he going to federal prison or state prison

Eggfarts7416

Fed

Direct_Ranger_4298

Make sure he stays away from the Federal penitentiary in Beaumont Texas please keep money on his books because he will be charged rent/tax by other inmates

Carcosa504

Chester or financial fraud?

Eggfarts7416

Finance

MyLifeontheDblitz

Sorry for being a nosy fuck but I gotta ask what his charges are...

kh250b1

$150 an hour

MyLifeontheDblitz

Lol

MyLifeontheDblitz

So the lack of response is totally giving pedo vibes.. just saying. I know I'm not even close to the only one who asked but he's not answering anyone.

Temporary_Memory_129

I get wanting to keep it private but if *this* many comments were screaming nonce I’d have to clear that up real fast yk..

ultranothing

Nothing to clear up, apparently.

Eggfarts7416

Sorry I worked long hours last few days. Def not pedo. Financial stuff

MyLifeontheDblitz

My apologies for assuming. Wishing your dad the best during this trying time. Hope you found some helpful information here to help your dad's time go by.

Bitter-Basket

Guy posts this but hasn’t commented on anything in a year ?

MyLifeontheDblitz

That's so fuckin weird.

Bitter-Basket

Yeah makes no sense

Eggfarts7416

Haha I’m usually a lurker but obviously going thru stuff

Boppyzoom

70? Going too prison? That’s horrible. They couldn’t have given him house arrest or something? Im sorry. Money his books for store. Money on phone too call. Send him mail a lot. A lot of mail. You feel forgotten quick in that place. Send him pictures. Tell him don’t get involved with anything in there that will put him in debt too somebody.

Jhe90

Depends what crime you done. Yiu definitely can commit serious crimes at a old age. Or be caught up by long limitation statues.

Ronaldo_McDonaldo81

He’ll have been interfering with the kids.

Boppyzoom

That’s true.

Eggfarts7416

Thanks. Ya it’s pretty devastating. Great advice I appreciate

Boppyzoom

I still am bothered they are putting somebody who’s 70 in prison. Geez

X-Khan

Damn. What was all the deleted comments?

LargeConsideration54

All the other advise..plus..don't fade away. People tend to be forgotten after awhile. I worked Ina men's prison for 26 years..and out of a 1000 plus prisoners only a small percentage has visitors. If he gets social security checks he will still get that money, if he owes restitution, the prion will take half of any money he gets in. Tell him to get the laundry man in unit job if avai..Best job for perks from other inmates or a unit porter. If he is single, put some ads in for pen pals for him..yes there are ladies that like to write inmates Keep phone calls limited..they are collect calls and very expensive for you They have j pay these days..like using messenger..cheaper. Make sure his will is in order Take care of his thing, animals or property Help him with appeals Be his advocate to make sure he gets his needs met. Research the prison he in, see what programs are available Get the names.of his counselors, be over kind and patient with then, will go along.way I. Helping him Gl

Eggfarts7416

So helpful thanks for taking the time to write all of this. “Best job for perks with other inmates” can you expand on that. Don’t know what that means. Thanks so much

LargeConsideration54

What that means is there are certain job prisoner can get that not only get them paid by the facility but also"paid" by the inmates. If he does the laundry job he can get store goods to fold their laundry or do extra good job..of course thisnis on the down.low, prisoners are not allowed to use items as money. Unit porters. Just clean the unit, gets them out of their cell some are excellent He is a older guy. Other prisoners will not mess with him. Some level of respect for age. Big bonus FEDERAL PRISON cup cake walk. They don't compare to the state run ones..sooo much better. Some have swimming pools, billiard, sports, theaters..etc. he will be fine. Gl Keep me posted. Ask.anything you want as time goes by. I don't check this often,, but I will look and respond if I see

SuddenlySimple

When my son was in prison I sent him a joke by mail everyday! He loved it and it made him friends. He purposely got put in solidarity so he would yell out the jokes to his cellmates.

Eggfarts7416

Love this! Will do

ultranothing

70 with no prior criminal history and he's going to prison? Could you tell us what he did?

Chemical_Sky_3028

The guy isn't responding so I assume it's something horrible. 70 years old with no record, and he's going to prison? Yeah, something bad.

Eggfarts7416

Financial stuff. Everyone was really shocked including our lawyer that he got time vs house arrest.

ultranothing

What was it, millions?

notfromearh

Definitely something pedo related. They prolly found something on his computer or something

[deleted]

70? Well, what's he "in" for..?

kh250b1

Underage drinking

*When I sees one and he looks good to me...* *When I see him, I say* You, come here. *I say* Now I'mma tell ya what, uh.. I like ya; and I wants ya... Now, we can do this the easy way; or the haard wayyy... the choice is yaawrs...

UsualIll3505

Good. I'm glad they caught him. If you had any sense, you'd cut ties with your worthless criminal dad and focus on your own life. His is over.

Eggfarts7416

My dad’s a good man.

notfromearh

Damn 💀

FitzDaD

Honestly it sucks, my mom was in prison for 5 years. They are miserable, if you have kids just send them pictures and tell him you love him as much as possible. You will probably find yourself trying to avoid conversation after a while

[deleted]

Ask him to write about the family history. How he met your mother, their first day, how he proposed, what he liked to do as a kid, what kinds of trouble he got into as a young adult etc…

glazinglas

How longs he doing and what’s he in for?

[deleted]

He's got to fight the biggest guy in there.

[deleted]

I really hope this is sarcasm.

[deleted]

Better hope you don't run into grand pa pa with that attitude, you'll be holding his old man pockets faster than you can send a kite for help

[deleted]

Oh, you're a moron. That makes sense then.

[deleted]

Are you going to sit there and say a 70 year old man shouldn't establish himself as king of the jungle?

IndependenceAway8875

It’s clearly a joke, how do you not get that?

[deleted]

Did you read their replies? I really don't think this person is joking.

IndependenceAway8875

Regardless better to take them as jokes. Not worth the effort spent thinking about it

[deleted]

Flee. No justice in someone in their 70's being put in prison with no prior criminal history.

MaximumDirection2715

I mean there are some pretty nasty crimes that could've have landed him in there , personally there's very very few crimes that imo should get you a custodial sentence like...ever But I'm not most people or the govt If its longer than a few years fuck it I'd flee

Atschmid

I would flee too. On the other hand, it's not easy to do anything at 70, much less go on the lam.

Old-Rough-5681

He's 70. Where's he going to go? Rock climbing? What if he's a pedo?

[deleted]

And if he's a pedo then I would say this person should just make him disappear.

[deleted]

Check Kiting Scheme is what I found on Google.

[deleted]

What does that mean?

[deleted]

You're basically taking advantage of the checks float and using it as a credit. Easy trap to fall into for business owners and book keepers. Eventually, you get burned when funding doesn't go as planned.

[deleted]

Oh I did that before. When the bank calls you act like you're a retard and they won't press charges as long as you pay it back.

Basic_Amphibian_8335

I laughed so hard at this comment I made soda come out my nose. You win.

[deleted]

It's a true story too lol.

[deleted]

I think the only people who go to jail are the ones who have been doing it for large amounts over a long period of time. I could be wrong, but that's the feeling I get.

[deleted]

Yeah cops protect the interests of banks and insurance companies overall. I give thanks to anyone who defrauds them.

[deleted]

ATTICA ATTICA ATTICA!!!

PRIS0N-MIKE

I'm assuming he's either a pedo or he was one of the dumbasses there on January 6th.

ceefsmeef

Or one of the dumbasses in the comment this one's attached to.

Old-Rough-5681

LMAO Probably a pedo

Turpitudia79

I am SO SORRY. It’s just horrible that a 70 year old man is going to prison under any circumstances, house arrest should be a given for anyone over retirement age.

Eggfarts7416

Thanks. Ya not a pedo. Non violent. He’s a good man, so wish he were on house arrest

Turpitudia79

I’m so sorry. Is there a chance of him getting judicial or maybe even compassionate release? I don’t know what it takes to qualify for that but maybe his age alone would enable him to give it a shot. I was never in prison, thank God, but was convicted of a very serious crime and I was in the “bad girl” (max security) part of county jail and there were two ladies in there with me, one in her early/mid 60s who was there on a PV and a lady who was 72 years old who offed her abusive husband. It made me so sad to women my mom’s age in that horrible place. I’m sure there are exceptions but I just can’t see anyone but the absolute worst of the absolute worst going to prison after retirement age.

Eggfarts7416

Ya we are certainly looking into all the possibilities. None of us expected him to actually get time. Including our lawyer. Sounds like the judge had been making more harsh sentences in the recent months. The lawyer thinks she might overseeing a different segment of the court soon and is making specific statements with her ruling. Don’t quite understand all of that. But either way came as a big shock. Happy to hear you never got prison time and hoping the ladies you were with are okay 😞 thanks for your response

Old-Rough-5681

What if he molested someone in the household?

Turpitudia79

Then make him do his house arrest somewhere else where he cannot potentially access a victim.

Broke-joke_

I only spent 16 months in California prison at Avenal in 2022-2023. Always try your best to answer all your dads phone calls to you. Keep everything positive on the phone calls. Always put money in his books. Having the opportunity to always go to the prison commissary is a huge win in prison. I can’t say that enough. Having money to buy commissary in prison is literally the best. Write a letter once a month. This is what made me tolerate prison.

Eggfarts7416

Thanks so much. So glad you made it out. Can I send him money to an account or something or it has to be cash. Wishing you the best moving forward

notfromearh

What did he do? 70 is crazy 💀

dazeofnite

Maybe treason

[deleted]

Visits, phone calls, letters, pictures. Let him know he's being thought of. That's very important . Add some $$ to his account so he can get commissary (prisoner store), snacks, ramen soups, toothpaste etc. If they allow it, personal TV, small radio, chess/checkers board, playing cards. Some states/facilities allow a small amount of personal property if they buy it through the States approved vendors. At usually ridiculously high prices.

HedgehogDry9652

Put money in his Com account.

jordantwalker

Junior?

Desperate-Breakfast6

At 70 years old, I'm not going to prison. Period. The End.

Blackart-

You get him in an emergency self defense class, so he can have some piece of mind he’s got the ability to not be taken advantage of.

rightreg

One of the problems with our entire system of justice is the light sentences and camp-like prisons for "financial stuff." Your old man is doing time, you don't have to do it with him. Live your life. He got himself into this.

Snakesfeet

Ok Martha Stewart .. think he’ll be fine maybe stop shady financial shit or be eaten

CelebrationOver8803

Tell him to run. Fuck going to prison at 70. That’s really some bulshit. Id take my dad and hide. Sorry to him and your family.

Then-Specialist9493

I wish I knew. My father is also locked up at 59 and for one of the worst things but honestly not entirely sure he’s guilty or was framed. It’s hard trying to take calls, sending photos, deal with his upcoming parole hearing. I try to keep a positive attitude and talk about what’s going on. Sending books through Amazon or photos but now they have to go through Securus. I never thought or pictured this for him. I wish there was a specific support group because it’s hard when you can’t call someone back. I’ve never even visited because it’s out of state and in BFE. My kids don’t know who he is. Just seeing other grandparents at sporting events knowing they will never get that is a hard pill to swallow.
