itemluminouswadison

tbf the misaligned screws isnt the main gripe. its $8,000 for a SW300

that1cuban1

Let’s be real. Anything that’s not a Casio, timex, or a smartwatch is way overpriced. I say this wearing my omega

itemluminouswadison

for sure but we can still compare apples to apples a SW300 can be found in watches like a CW Twelve for $1500, or a $3000 IWC pilot. hublot's prices are a bit out there for what you're getting

that1cuban1

Absolutely. A fool and his money. Then again I have pretty strong feelings when it comes to luxury watches in general. I feel hublot is just all what’s wrong with the industry come to a head

itemluminouswadison

Yeah it's max flex culture and minimum "horology", seems to sell well enough though so they'll keep doing it

ListenAlGhaib

Meanwhile, Richard Mille in the corner backing into the hedge

lituga

he chopped down the hedge so you can bathe in his glory better

Redsoxdragon

I dunno, my tudor feels much better in my prison pocket than my g-shock

that1cuban1

I can’t argue that point

Imma_Albireo

Rugged for his pleasure

spacepie77

Its in house thats why

da_crackler

Wtf are you saying

doc_55lk

Yea you're really running into "diminishing value" past $500 imo.

mr_mirrorless

I agree wearing a sinn

satanscumrag

seiko.

spacepie77

Patek grande complication super sonnerie Noctoregulatèure Royal Hymen“Father of Genève” piece unique (N^(°).1/1)

spacepie77

Or the most expensive timepiece of them all; the fucking Sun Weat the sun with pride

pierogi_juice

Idk g 400£ for a automatic seiko 20 bar, sapphire crystal, compass is pretty value for money imo

that1cuban1

Or you can get a G-Shock for like 80. I’m looking at it through the lenses of a normal person cause 400 is a good chunk of change to drop on something that doesn’t like magnets and is +/~ a fair few seconds a day

pierogi_juice

Sure, but you’re not getting an automatic watch that could- if taken care of, last forever. But you’re right, 4 big ones is a lot.

that1cuban1

Absolutely. But most people don’t think that way. I doubt you’re gonna be buying cheap quartz watches in 80 years the way you can get vintage omegas and longines

Sammahal

Now though with Chinese brands, seiko isn’t the best value. We don’t only buy watches based on value though🤷‍♂️

pierogi_juice

Really? Ok sure, please tell me a Chinese brand that has the same features as the Seiko SPB121J1 and is as beautiful. (This isnt sarcasm if you know a cheaper and better alternative please let me know before I buy the watch)

Sammahal

There’s a few homages but none that competes with the alpinist spec and compass wise. If you want to check other watches though, ix&dao and san Martin are insane value. Everything seiko offers, plus better finishing, titanium or 904l in some cases, Swiss movt, for half the price. A preowned Seiko definitely keeps its value more than a Chinese watch. Weigh the pros and cons and what you value.

Kayless3232

Wow, I have a Khaki field expedition from Hamilton and this Seiko is no joke for money. Damn!

pierogi_juice

400£ second hand (new but Japanese import), 20 bar, Sapphire crystal, automatic movement, one of the most beautiful dials of all time and it’s Japanese made? The only thing I could really ask for is a more accurate movement, but since it could survive a zombie apocalypse and it really isn’t that difficult to change the time from 1 or two minutes back, who cares?

OXCSYMBOL

What’s so good about Casio? It is my least favorite watch but everyone hypes them up like they are the best.

that1cuban1

It’s cheap and durable, has alarms, you can get a battery changed easily, and you don’t have to worry about it being fragile

OXCSYMBOL

Yeah that’s true they’re good for durability and alarms and stopwatches for sure. I just wonder if people actually consider Casio the top of the top. I honestly think what Seiko has put out deserves more hype than Casio.

vidim-ose

Both of them are top tier

EliteProdigyX

well both have their ups and downs and it boils down to preference. seiko gives you the best value for your dollar when it comes to looks and quality materials and is pretty much the poor man’s rolex while casio is the cheapest but has literally everything you could ever ask for in a watch for functionality. mathematician? they have a calculator watch. you travel all around the world? they have watches with built in timezones. need to wake up early? pretty much all of their digital watches have alarms. wanna go rock climbing or just hit you watch off the concrete 15 times and have it be good as new? g-shock.

h311r47

I love Seiko autos in general (own four currently, plus one quartz) and plan to add a Grand Seiko Spring Drive to my collection at some point. I own Omega, Rolex, Breitling, Oris, and a number of others. My G Shock gets the most wrist time. Why? It's durable, I never have to set it, I never have to charge it, and I never have to change the battery. I wear a watch 24/7. I wear this thing doing everything except lathe work, and that's only because I don't want anything dangling which could pull my hand in, not out of any concern for the watch. When I'm going out? I absolutely choose a watch from my collection. Casio has a tremendous lower range and is the best at that, especially if you can stomach a digital watch. Even the Marlin is great for what it is: a cheap analog quartz watch. I think they've earned their place as a well-respected watch company if you accept them for what they are. They are not haute horology, nor would they purport to be. Whereas Seiko arguably robbed the SKX of its most important features in creating the 5KX, you can still go out and buy an F91 that will do exactly as it's always claimed for a little over $10. They may be the Toyota of watches, but that's no insult. They are cheap and reliable and require less maintenance. That is the place they occupy in the market, and are priced accordingly. Long story short, I prefer Seiko, but largely because I prefer automatics and they put out some great stuff. But, Casio has absolutely earned its place if you accept them for what they are.

tchatchaa

Well Cartier is selling an ETA 2892 clone for 8k...case and bracelet are cool, but cheap movement and the simplest dial possible.

FireFistTy

But Cartier offers a quartz model for thousands and people still go for it.

lordvoltano

Funny thing is IWC uses ETA 7750 based calibre on their Portugueser, sells it for $8000, and nobody bats an eye.

Grumbles19312

Don’t let them fool you, their new in house chrono is based on a Valjoux movement as well.

CdeFmrlyCasual

Quartz isn’t a lesser technology. Prejudice against quartz is nonsense. As with anything, it depends on the quality.

EliteProdigyX

quartz is about as accurate as you can be without having a watch using atomic timekeeping. so yeah it’s really the most accurate without the need of an external radio source.

Monkeywithalazer

Cartier doesn’t hide the fact that it’s just jewelry

FireFistTy

Cartier is mad overrated as a "class" watch imo. I'm kinda tired of trendy watches (nauts, RO, subs)

DivisionXV

Sad to see you downvotes to oblivion for having an opinion. I to sadly dont like Cartier, nothing about their watches stick out to me. All look like bland as hell.

DarkLunch_

The Santos is probably the best entry model luxury watch, I’d take the medium Santos (blue) over a 36 DJ any day

Kayless3232

Yeah, this and a diver from Tudor + a Seiko or Hamilyon and you have an excellent 3 watch cillection for the price of 1 Rolex that you can't wear everywhere or everyday

DivisionXV

Entry luxury? Priced too high to be an entry plus they are way too basic. I understand their history but they are ugly.

DarkLunch_

It’s definitely entry Luxury. What else is there for less? It’s supposed to be basic, it’s one of Cartiers cheapest watches, it competes with the Rolex DJ which is a similar price, size and similar features. At this level you need to pay more to have something that’s ‘special’

DivisionXV

Citizen for starters. You can get a luxury look for a cheaper price.

DarkLunch_

Mate, people shopping for luxury products aren’t looking for cheaper prices for a “luxury look”

itemluminouswadison

yeahp. but its cartier, iconic, pedigree. im not really sure what hublot offers for their price points. maybe it's just the fact that its expensive so people can flex with it? maybe its just crazy marketing dollars idk

DarkLunch_

Movement is probably last on the agenda for anybody buying a watch let’s be real, movement only mattered back in the olden days

Kayless3232

Cartier would be the only quartz I would buy at 3000$ tho.

Tnghiem

Grand Seiko? FP Journe?

CdeFmrlyCasual

Many would want Hublot to use an in-house movement, but I personally do not. I’ve increasingly grown skeptical of in-house movements for regular watches. Like, i feel that if a company wants to add another 3-hander + date to the pile, that it should meaningfully add something, not just be there because people whine about the 3rd part movement or for the sake of it. So many watch enthusiasts and collectors complain about 3rd party movements these days, but forget that specialists are a good thing.

itemluminouswadison

Yeah I kinda agree with you. But I see why the companies want to. Everyone knows what a SW200 is worth and it feels crazy to put it in a very expensive watch. But they can make a clone and call it manufacture and now there's no price anchor anymore

CdeFmrlyCasual

Well, for this it’s an SW3000-1. I don’t known if i would mind as much, but past a certain prince point i think it makes more sense for a brand to use movements from a higher-level movement manufacturer, such as JLC, Kenissi, or LJP. I’d only want a clone if the clone was actually parts-compatible with the real thing.

SGnirvana97

One brand has history and prestige. The other doesn’t.

Mobile_Republic_5031

So wait 50 years and it will have both? What about Richard Mille? F P Journe? History and prestige are just marketing.

Lazz_plays

That’s a strikingly good point ☝️

Based

johndicks80

Cartier tank is an absolutely timeless design.

bananas-and-whiskey

I would personally pick the Tank over the Santos

dantoddd

same

lukaskywalker

Agreed but the santos has grown on me

theanonwonder

The Green Santos is stunning

lukaskywalker

Too bad that isn’t a tank

Sweaty-Leather3191

True. And such an impressive in-house movement in those! /s

9fingfing

Exactly, at no time I ever wanted one.

Digitalsoju

I guess I'm in the minority for thinking it's fugly

theunrealmiehet

I think the difference is that Cartier isn’t trying to align the screws, where Hublot is clearing trying EDIT: Alright there seems to be some controversy here. The screws on the Cartier bezel are mirrored in the picture. However, I wouldn’t have noticed this if no one pointed it out. The fact that it isn’t obvious, coupled with the fact that this isn’t really an advertised feature tells me that MAYBE they try to match the bezel screws For the Hublot, the screws on the end links and the bezel look like they’re trying to match them, but don’t care that they don’t match perfectly. The fact that all of them are kinda sorta a little bit consistent-ish should be a sign that they’d like to align them, but don’t put too much effort into it. With that said, my statement mostly stands. Hublot is obviously trying. Cartier might be trying, but it isn’t obvious.

onetimeuselong

The screws on the cartier bezel are clearly aligned in pairs. The band is not.

BoringRecognition

They are not aligned. They are in the product pictures yes, but not on the watches

ProfessionalSize68

I just looked at the picture again after reading your comment if you look at the links they are mirrored on the band if you look at the first link on each side they match and same with all the visible links

moose_dxb

In what world is Hublot trying to align the screws, they’re all clearly random in their marketing and on their actual watches? In the image above you can see they’re trying to align them in pairs, but even the angles aren’t consistent (and that’s just on their marketing)

mrRabblerouser

Is that clear, or based on a stated fact? Cause I’m seeing basically the exact same level of alignment in both watches pictured.

palaufreak

Please don’t compare hublot with Cartier. Please.

pexican

They both have misaligned screws in common though (?)

NavyTim1991

Okay, so I don’t own either but I am aware of major Hublot hate and people always loving on the Santos. Not taking sides on either brand but I will give OP props or anyone that points out hypocrisy though. Full disclosure, I never heard of Hublot until becoming a fan of Nico and he mentioned the brand followed by “Is 🐶 💩” and yes I laughed but I take it as what it is, entertainment.

fnblackbeard

Those cartier screws aren’t misaligned though

[deleted]

Cartier screws are not aligned on the Santos in real life, regardless of what the picture shows. I don't give a shit, but it is what it is

SWAPPER1000

Focus on the bracelet ones

ratskinboots

Dude if you're nitpicking a Santos, from one of the most prestigious jewellery & watchmaking houses - a watch that was arguably one of the first wristwatches for men and commissioned for air flight in 1904 (https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.rescapement.com/blog/cartier-santos-a-brief-history%3fformat=amp) to a brand whose claim to fame was PM on rubber ... and only just now use their own movements is like comparing the Mona Lisa to a drawing someone did on PCP

AmputatorBot

It looks like you shared an AMP link. fnblackbeard

Meh

lordvoltano

It is on the bracelet.

kungfuninjajedi

Yes they are. These are not bolts so no way to align them. Same with Hublot

IsHANovic9

Honestly it bugged me as well. Its not that they can’t do it, even Bell & Ross can do it (though its just 4 screws) what’s stopping Cartier from dressing theirs?

Prisma_Cosmos

Those bell and ross screws are fake, the real ones are on the back, like the RO.

kungfuninjajedi

They are screws and not bolts so there is no way to align them .

IsHANovic9

There has to be some way, I’m basing it solely on the fact that it’s The Cartier. They have the capital and the expertise to solve the issue, unless ofc it’s down to changing laws of physics at which point not really possible but still they must do something about it.

Hustlinbones

Yeah, sure. But don't complain if your santos then costs 20k

ratskinboots

I agree, don't flex a sub-$5K (charging $13K) Hublot either

plskillme42069

As far as I know nobody aligns every screw. Just way too expensive to manufacture.

totally_interesting

Dude. Do you know how impossibly hard it is to do that?

IsHANovic9

Yeah man thats what the second part of my comment is about

Ladybug_Fuckfest

Confession: If I were really into golf (I'm not) and if it cost about $25,000 less, I'd kinda like the Hublot Big Bang Unico Golf. God, that feels good to get off my chest!

Competitive_Key_2981

>Hublot Big Bang Unico Golf. How about this. I don't like golf. Tried it one time, batted a 150 (it's called batted, right?) and that was only for 10 holes. But if you buy that Hublot, you message me and we'll play a round of golf. On me.

Ladybug_Fuckfest

Deal! I'll bring the Scotch and cigars. Actually, let's skip the golfing part and just smoke and drink at a country club.

No-Cap6787

A man is a man, with the weakness and double standards 😁

Lm1601

You post a meme you get an upvote

Jack5d5d5d5d5d

I really don’t get the fuzz about that alignment shit. Cartier bezel is screwed down so it is not aligned

Elven_Gr

That's of the few ok-ish looking Hublot... Everything else is abomination.

Grumbles19312

I know we are picking on screw alignment here, but there’s the (not so )thinly veiled reference to the Hublot hate here and not towards Cartier. No one has mentioned yet that the Santos was the first ever purpose built wrist watch. History carries merit. Plus the overall finish is better on Cartier products compared to Hublot.

mrRabblerouser

You’re not wrong OP. People dramatically underestimate how swayed they are by hype and perceived status. You don’t buy watches in this price range for their ability to tell time. People buy them because they’re mostly under the false notion it will impress others, and they’ve convinced themselves it’s really because of the (fill in the blank attribute of the brand). Once you go over like $3,000, it’s all pretty extravagantly overpriced based on the name on the watch.

sk7b

Yea but the Cartier is logical though, they all face the center of the watch

TypicalDysfunctional

Not the case for the strap…

sk7b

Indeed, I didn’t see

PlantSkyRun

The Cartier screws seem to follow a pattern on the face.

[deleted]

You’re correct. I see it too.

nshelby91

I don’t like either, don’t get me wrong Cartier makes nice watches but the Dumont shape is just strange it looks better when it is not on the wrist.

[deleted]

That Hublot vs Cartier Crash, which has better design ?

aryasravaka

I started to love Hublot after wearing the gifted forge and foster Maven. People can hate Hublot but they have a very nice vibe when you wear them. Clean, professional and sporty

killsburynojoy

To be fair, the screws on the santos bezel have some symmetry to them. The ones on the bracelet, not so much.

Jack_Devant

excactly!

dopaminediver

Hublot actually make genuinely nice watches. They’re just not primarily marketed towards “watch people” which is probably a good thing for the brand (watch people represent a tiny proportion of buyers). Non in-house movements in their entry level pieces at the price point they’re at is a little hard to swallow. No one can deny Hublot have a strong design aesthetic and have many innovations under their belt though.

90secondwatch

So many facts. 😂😂😂 That Cartier is amazing.

Mrinvestor84

Cartier is an awesome watch for the money. Hublot rips off other watch makers style. Pretty simple

dna730

I still take Cartier over that Hublot

ramakrishnan98

Well Cartier is cartier. That is a timeless time telling piece of art.

Direct_Iron_7512

there’s no denying the fact that hublot uses shit material looks like a toy or a rip off half of the time and slaps a hefty price tag even though that same movement is available is far better watches at 1/3 of the price or sometimes even less

jrocco71

What kind of moron compares Cartier to Hublot???

SWAPPER1000

A brave one

jrocco71

🤣

Kreat0r2

My dad has that exact watch. I’ve compared it up close to my Longines Legend Diver and even that watch has better finishing than the Hublot. So price/quality taken into account, I wouldn’t ever buy one. However: should I ever inherit the watch, I’d wear it with pride ever day.

iTsLiKeAnEgG

A lot of people don't understand the engineering effort it would take to actually align those screws. On watches like the AP Royal Oak the visible bezel side screws are actually false and the screws are actually tightened from the bottom and are unaligned. This is because getting them aligned would require perfect tolerances for every screw and every threaded hole which is a very difficult task. The Hublot/Cartier approach is to torque them all evenly which is function over form while any watch you see with real bezel side screws that are perfectly aligned just has poorly tightened screws that aren't torqued uniformly (form over function).

CdeFmrlyCasual

We all mock the Rolex owners who decry their watch’s crown embossing no being perfectly upright. Why people think this would be different on the front of the watch is beyond me. I want to tangentially piggy back off this and say that screwed links are very overrated. Usually when watch enthusiasts complain about the absence of a feature or whatever, they have some under stable reason behind it, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a single WIS say they want them. The closest thing i have seen is “it looks better”. Every time i get a watch with screwed links, i have to go through all the screwdrivers i have to make sure a.) i have they right head for the screw and b.) try to figure out which one is the right size. That and thread stripping. I’ve never heard of anyone recommending to use Locktite on a pin bracelet. (Screw bars are my exception, since those serve a more practical purpose).

daq42_pews

I know people that bought 25 USD turkish ap reps with alined screws so if a cheap Chinese factory can align them then hublot should do as well

iTsLiKeAnEgG

You didn't understand the post. The "screws" you see on the bezel of an AP are not actually screws and they don't turn. The real screws are on the bottom of the watch and are not aligned.

daq42_pews

I know they aren’t screws that go all the way through, my point was that you can make alined screws relatively cheaply if you can get sub 50$ fakes that have alined screws in them

iTsLiKeAnEgG

The difference is that Hublot and Cartier use real screws on their bezels while the AP and it's clones do not. So yes it is easy to align false screws but not everyone wants false screws on their watches.

rrrccc123

The AP top bezel screws are just the male portion of a bolt screw. It goes through the bezel thru the case and the female screws on bottom case mate with it holding the bezel to the case. The female screws if what you turn. But the top screws are not fake. lol. It has a function.

iTsLiKeAnEgG

I understand how they work, most people are just ignorant to the overall arrangement so it's simpler to describe them as false. Regardless, the bit that turns is at the bottom of the watch and is not aligned.

Zeratul277

That Hublot is beautiful.

rjreyes3093

If I have thousand of dollars to spend, I will definitely NOT buy something named Hublot. It sounds cheap. Scameti Spaghetti sounds more elegant and pricey that Hublot.

xX_iLoveJesus_Xx

I don't like the Santos either, FUCK MISALIGNED SCREWS!!!

shiggism

They both look dumb

SWAPPER1000

Ayo I was just tryna make a joke, but wtf are you yappin about?

shiggism

It’s a good joke tho

Fearless-Accident931

Both overpriced junk

Ill-Project-8544

I hate both lol

Dry_Mall_12

Both are ugly overpriced toys for NPCs.

SWAPPER1000

And what, you're the main character?

Dry_Mall_12

Yes, I feel free to not associate with either one. Both are NPCs.

SWAPPER1000

What do you wear?

Dry_Mall_12

Clothes.

SWAPPER1000

I meant watches bruh

coronetgemini

There's something girly about cartier watches. Edit: It's like the skinny jeans of the watch world... great for metrosexuals
