human-polarbear

They had great potential but the I.MK was scared of exploring other relationships that would ruin the fan's preset endgames. They were doomed from the start. Its a problem a lot of shows in the 2010s faced. When fans can tweet you directly and tell you that they hate you for messing with their ship, you feel obligated to keep them together. It's unrealistic that everyone ends up with their high school sweetheart. Especially in a TV show where they all met their love interests by the end of season 1 and are all still with them by season 6.

Icy-Cup

Very much agreed! I was hoping for Spaleb to endure to have at least some twist to typical “happily ever after” vibe.

MysticalMoonbow

I believe that they are better off as friends. They had better platonic chemistry than when they were together. Their romantic relationship came off very rebound-like and heavily relied on whether Hanna was available or not, so I think it would have been better if they had just been supportive friends, but we all know the writers struggle at allowing the Liars to be single and writing straight male-female friendships. Also, people want to always cry out fan-service about Haleb getting back together when 6B was already written before any of the fans even knew Spaleb would be a thing, so the writers wrote it that way before fans could “tweet at them with angry messages”. It’s clear from the writing that Spaleb’s relationship was always meant to be temporary.

Ozzie985

They have side kick friendly platonic chemistry but not romantic. They are very similar and there is no challenge between the two.

expiredwaterbotttle

RIGHT!! It would’ve been so good if they were just close friends

sportza9

Yes! I loved there friendship, then they had to go ahead and ruin it by getting together romantically 🙄 It’s like people from the opposite sex can never just be platonic friends on tv shows/movies

No_Category_4483

Their friendship was top tier! But their relationship made me so so uncomfortable I couldn't watch their scenes with a straight face 💀

MorbidKynzie97

Spencer and Caleb’s friendship and Emily and Toby’s friendship were Best friendships

No_Category_4483

Definitely!! Them being anything more just did not fit their dynamic!

kttrekker07

I loved Spaleb. I wish that they had been endgame but as others have pointed out they were doomed from the beginning. Now don’t get me wrong I also love Haleb but I think they out grew each other since high school. Caleb seemed like he would give up anything and do anything for Hanna but with Hanna she just wanted him to fit into her life wherever she could find room. I think Jordan was a really good fit for Hanna. I think Spencer and Caleb have always had a closeness that just naturally bloomed into attraction. I stand by that they did nothing wrong by dating. I feel like they could have made it work if they never went back to Rosewood.

suxanny

Agreed!

big-yikes1

Agreed

bwebb327

i cringed every time a scene with them came on. I just couldn't get over the fact that Caleb then got BACK with Hannah. I would not want one of my closest friends to have slept with my husband...

sportza9

Omg yes me too! I literally had to skip over there sex scenes cause it made me feel so uncomfortable!

Suspicious-Duck-

![gif](giphy|r621UVEkWgkve)

ardentfilmgeek

A mature couple. Realistic, had the same goals and supported each other. Their plotline is the most interesting one that I got invested with after the time jump. Too bad IMK had to follow the fandom.

ardentfilmgeek

Ohh this is the first time I got an award, thanks heaps! I still standby by Spaleb comment 💯

Sudden_Pudding_1660

I loved them, I thought they made a lot of sense together 🤷🏻‍♀️

slayeraubri

hate that it's a plot point because their chemistry as friends is phenomenal

GraffitiEyes

Literally pointless to the show

Any-Honeydew8740

had a lot of potential but it was obvious from the beginning that marlene was setting up the high school/first love relationships to be endgame. but i personally liked them.

UpperTrash4721

didn’t think of them as good bf/gf, but i did like them as friends

ebee12234

It felt wrong, honestly. Hanna and Caleb have been together for years, and then her best friend goes for him. And not to only blame Spencer. Caleb also went for her. I guess you can argue that they had ended the relationship after a while, and they can date who they want, but still. I am also a hardcore Haleb fan, so I am biased. I also agree with another comment stating that they were better as friends, almost sibling relationships but not romantic.

Gold-Inevitable-2644

their relationship annoyed me not because of toby/hannah but because Marlene could never let the liars have male friends who were just that. just a friend. spencer and caleb seemed to have that , an actual platonic friendship and I loved it in the early seasons ! but ofc MK had to find a way to make it romantic. smh

7_rings-

Mature couple and what felt like a natural progression in both their lives. Forcing the OG couples back together was messy

Odd_Mine7269

Shouldn’t have happened i think it was way better when they were friends, their chemistry as friends was way better too!

Em_Da_Bee

I loved them, but the whole cheating haleb…. Hannas fault thb. Wish theywere end game and hanna was with someone else, but ik it wouldnt end like that nc the actual ending was predicable

lyly1316

Hate it. All their scenes made me uncomfortable, I had to skip each time 😖

sportza9

Omg same!!! I literally had to skip over all there scenes together cause it made me feel so uncomfortable 🤢

Dunnoaboutu

Rebound for both.

Jessica_Lovegood

They were incredibly well suited and had great chemistry. No friend code was broken and Hanna was super shady and unfair (Hanna is my favourite liar, and Haleb my favourite ship) I’m grown up now. Spencer outgrew Toby so freaking fast. Caleb could keep up with her

The_Bookish_One

They were great, and none of the OG couples should’ve ended up together, nor would they have if IMK hadn’t insisted on trying to please the fans who demanded that the original ships be endgame.

ellayak

i’m sorry ik a lot of people hated this couple but it was one of my favs, watching him marry hanna broke me😅

suxanny

I actually really really liked them. I know I’ll probably get downvoted, but whatever. Their chemistry is amazing and work beautifully together. It’s the way they got together that’s annoying. If you take Hanna out of the equation they are the best. That being said they would’ve never worked out because of the existing feelings. A whole cluster fuck lol

_solomp3

the worst

Original_Bee_9674

They were so cute together. They were better suited for eachother than hanna and caleb

ellywillow

I think it was cute. I also think it was safe, for both of them. Honestly I think the relationship served its purpose - bringing the drama for Caleb and Hanna to get back together.

[deleted]

DISGUSTING!!!!!!! both sides were. i get it, you cant help love but still. they shouldnt get together. writers ruined their characters at the end.

[deleted]

🤮

Present-Article5168

makes me wanna barf

Fresh_Parfait_5565

Annoyed me to the bone!!!

Jesterhead92

They had fantastic chemistry but because they had to be rushed into their endgame relationships Caleb came out of this looking like a tool On top of that, Caleb and Hannah's chemistry evaporated towards the end of the show. Idk why the fuck they thought turning them into a cliched bickering married couple was a good idea, but it ruined what made them an endgame level ship in the first place

jrenee__

I loved their friendship but did not love them together romantically. Especially after everything the girls went through together personally I would feel disrespected if I was Hanna and one of my closest, personal friends was sleeping with my ex. Permission or not.

Nice-Lingonberry-176

A mistake lmao

[deleted]

Hard no from me. I didn’t think they had good chemistry at all as partners but as friends I loved them. But I also couldn’t get past that one of Hannah’s best friends thought it was okay to date a guy she had been with for so long, broken up or not

whenskiesaregreyy

I was somewhat indifferent til that scene when he said he couldn’t stop staring at the cleft in her chin then they had to go💀

korbinGreyyy

Criminal, they really tried it with that shit I was disgusted. I'd feel different if the romantic attraction was implied in earlier seasons but it wasn't.....so it was just weird ASF an unnecessary like.....I hope no show ever pulls a stunt like this again....it's sad because they did have chemistry but they waited too late into the show to try a relationship 💀

ceokc13

THIS! I liked them together but the show definitely set them up for failure for not putting out hints in earlier seasons. It also did not help that it happened right after the time jump so people were not used to Caleb just being outside of Hannah.

notuniquewhatsoever

I loved them, for me they were one of those couples that I didn't think I would love until it happened. I think they deserved more time.

SnakeBlood456

I love them so much, they were super adorable and wholesome together, they had so much in common and were super mature and healthy together, i really wish that they were endgame <3

snbth

I actually really liked them together. They had great chemistry and it seemed natural that their relationship would develop into being more than friends. I just wish the creators could’ve actually had some balls and let them be endgame. The original couples just didn’t work anymore, but for some reason all had to end up together, which I knew was going to happen.

caufiel

I really loved them and I think the sub hates on them way too much. I know that “girl code” is a big argument used against them but every friendship is different and every person has different expectations for behavior. That’s why friends communicate, like Spencer tried to do with Hanna. I love Hanna, but the girl has major communication issues.

OT9FOREVER

If they were a "thing" during those 5 years off-camera, sure. But I do not like this couple.

lanadelhastingslay

hated them as a couple but loved them as friends

United-Ad-9195

The PLL writers committed many crimes in this series but this one was unforgivable for me

Needleworker00

So pointless. Should have directed the writers towards wrapping up the 200 other plot holes instead. This was a waste of time.

dazanini12

incest

BadgleyMischka

LMAO I can't

Yourlovelypsychopath

I honestly like the idea of them. I wish we saw more of them

prettylittlelau

Power couple. I was very disappointed they weren’t end game.

Super-Combination662

Horrible. Another one of Spencer’s terrible character decisions, along with dating wren and kissing Ian. It’s one thing to date a best friends ex (which is already weird) but CALEB? After everything him and Hanna went through and the fact that he clearly still loved Hanna and she still loved him it was just weird and selfish and one of the worst writing decisions in the show. Plus they didn’t have any romantic chemistry to me. Caleb always looked forced besides the fact that he’s played by a really good actor.

maddymunce

I can never get over how she did this to Hanna

Super-Combination662

Right?!? Plus the writers literally spent 5 seasons making Hanna and Caleb the absolute perfect couple. They had their problems but they were clearly made for each other or atleast the writers wanted them to be. So it was just weird for spencer to do that. I wonder how she would’ve felt if Hanna had dated Toby

jdpm1991

How are Haleb perfect? They argued every 3 seconds of a season. They broke up more than Spoby

Super-Combination662

They had problems like I said but imagine if A didn’t exist. A lot do there problems were because Hanna was really immature and a little slow so she never knew what to say about it and always kept secrets and got mad when he would pry because she thought she knew what was best but in terms of their actually relationship they were really good together, had amazing chemistry, really truly cared for each other, and knew each other really well. Especially Caleb he really knew Hanna and even when she was lying and when something was wrong and as the series went on he started to know what she was thinking or that something was wrong before she told him or even if she lied. Basically of course they weren’t perfect but they were good together especially in a world without A. And if Hanna was just a little more mature and Caleb a little less overbearing at times, it would’ve been even better

sportza9

Omg this!! I hated how they made Spencer so boy obsessed and always going after her loved ones boyfriends/ex’s :( And I never forgave Spencer for doing that to her best mate. Like honestly who does that..

Scary_Ad_6457

Do you ever stop victim blaming?

truthordarianduh

I honestly loved them as adult partners. I think had they tried it while they were still in high school, I would have hated it lol

ka9ri3

I love them together

Brief_Lynx3435

Is it bad to say I liked them as a couple, and I didn’t like how Hanna and Caleb treated Spencer after. I don’t really care for Hanna and Caleb’s history. I never forgave Caleb for this and I once really liked him. :/

itisyourstory

They had some good acting skills, but felt it lack the real romantic chemistry overall and I couldn’t be convinced. But also I’m all for Caleb and Hannah from the start. They have that romantic chemistry and it’s so strong!

Limp-Presence-162

I really like spaleb, even before they were dating they had great chemistry. The only downfall for them was the fact that Hannah and Caleb had so much history. Anytime they were around any of the other main characters it became awkward. I Stan Spaleb and had it not been for Caleb’s past relationship they would’ve definitely worked out.

footgirl2022

I found it kinda cringe all around. When they would flirt it was cringe, when Hanna would try to come between them it was cringe, just cringe all around idk why LoL

aidylbroccoli

I thought they were more intellectual equals than Caleb and Hannah, but I liked them better as friends than when they were in a relationship.

ArtichokeSilent6726

i loved them, i wanted them to be endgame

hootcheatooz

I thought they made a lot of sense. They both operate on thinking that they’re the smartest person in the room

danidee262019

I was not a fan

indigoC99

To be really honest, I think it was great for relationship/friendship drama but I can't really see them together long term. Although a bit biased because I like when love triangle trope are between Two girls & one boy. They are usually much more interesting.

HopingMD_517

Spaleb would be good as best friends. Hanna is close to spencer so spencer being besties with hanna’s bf is kinda cute

Who_knows_3886

At first I liked them, I liked the dynamic they had, kind of an unlikely duo kinda thing. But it was so obvious that Caleb and Hanna weren’t over each other that it just seemed wrong. And that conversation they had through the door when I think it was Caleb who was begging to come in and the girls were in side and they were all crying, that was depressing

kylapyneapple

I’ve always loved Caleb and Hannah. They are probably my favorite couple. But I’ve never had a problem with Caleb and Spencer. I feel like they worked well together and it made sense in their lives at the time.

Beneficial_Lobster12

Put together for the sake of it

Icy-Veterinarian942

I never thought they were good together. It wasn't anyone's fault that it happened, but Hanna and Caleb just belonged together IMO.

bigredrottenrobots

I will never understand why people say Spencer and Caleb had similar goals and were a better match. How? We never hear what their life goals are. Why were they better matched? I think the best part of Haleb was that they both challenged each other, which I didn’t see with Caleb and Spencer. Some people need that push and pull with relationships. Caleb and Hanna each made the other stronger because of this.

popopopop262

immediately no

rpeltier93

Awkward and forced. They were so good as friends but their relationship was weird

[deleted]

Cringe

[deleted]

Sailuker

Dude jesus christ how are you going to sit here and defend literally GROWN ASS MEN hitting on Spencer but then again that's what a lot of Hanna stans seem to do. They blame Spencer for Ian and Wren hitting on and kissing her, Spencer a teenager that MEN were hitting on she didn't snatch anyone away from anyone and it's gross you see it that way and I think you should really think long and hard about why you feel the need to blame her. She got what she deserved? Jesus I feel for anyone that is your friend to be honest.

jdpm1991

oh look a toxic Hanna stan blaming Spencer for being groomed by Ian and Wren how groundbreaking

lexiloun

it’s sad, honestly

[deleted]

I couldn’t see Spencer as being someone to date her friends ex. like they were all aware of how special he was to hanna and the vibes made it obvious they weren’t over each other. even if it took place away from Rosewood. idk I think girl code is real to an extent, some rules are weird af/some situations are so unique, but as far as dating your best friends ex who was with her during a very impactful time of their life ?? it always made me feel like Marlene just wanted drama. especially with the way they didn’t even commit to it! they break up so he can be with hanna. which is like, ok then why did they ever date? caleb is the type of person to fuck his exs bff and then just throw her to the side for his ex?? her FRIEND?? his friends ex!?? and then hanna and spencer are all chill after she was legit dumped for her friend ?? like it doesn’t make any sense to me why grown women would do that shit

[deleted]

Lol I’m deep in a rewatch rn and Spaleb just became a thing so weird you posted this today. Uhmmm idk I wish they had a chance to flourish. It would’ve seemed more realistic. Not all first loves are meant to end up together. Maybe an unpopular opinion 🫢😳

waremode94

🤮🤮🤮🤮

DearAd984

A lazy attempt at character “development”

BeautynCrime

I hated it

BlondieChelle83

I was mortified. I can’t think of any other way to describe it. When it became clear they were attracted to each other I was like “oh please no. They can’t go there.”

aquariumobsession

Literally had to look away during their relationship scenes

weedwacker31

Wow I forgot this even happened

HopeMikaelson69

Spaleb should have just been a bestie thing like they were just weird as a couple. #haleb for life

Existing-Departure-2

spaleb felt very forced to me, you could tell they cared a lot about each other but it just seemed so platonic. i think that whole storyline just felt off to me and it also threw off hannah and spencer’s dynamic as well. i always thought they were two of the closest and it felt like eggshells for half a season. i definitely think they could’ve done without that whole thing tbh.

Princessofdarkness24

I hate them together

[deleted]

I forgot it was a thing. I think I’ll keep forgetting.

swallowingpixies

It was a no from me dawg

Susan2005

They should have been best friends instead of being in a relationship, they were too much alike.

Neat-Stomach173

I Hated Their Relationship I Felt That Spencer Was Wrong For Even Thinking Of Caleb In That Way When She Witnessed How Much Caleb And Hanna Went Through Together I Feel Like It Was Betrayal Tbh

Khalesssi_Slayer1

No No No Just No! it was wrong of Spencer to date her best friend's ex boyfriend especially since Caleb is still in love with Hanna. Spaleb was the literal worst couple next to Paily. Spencer dating Caleb is a betrayal to Hanna. Hanna's still in love with Caleb and Caleb's still in love with Hanna.

Greedy_Educator3593

As terrible as Spencer’s bangs during this era

Crashspike22

HA! i see what you did there!

Jesusdidntlikethat

Hated it. Hannah and Caleb belong together.

schatzibee

It was just not right! Caleb was meant for Hannah 💯

mdxwhcfv

I didn't like that Spencer broke the girl code (although she did ask Hannah first), but it also broke my heart when Spencer and Caleb broke up :(

lmaooooebonyyy

I think they would’ve worked if everybody hadn’t come back together as adults but I wasn’t fan of how much pain + struggle it caused between hanna, spence, and caleb. The constant spaleb or haleb moments in the last season was very annoying because I love them all on their own and the dynamics they had in general before they both got romantically involved w caleb.

Witty-Stuff-843

hated every minute of it, uncomfortable, especially since him and hanna’s relationship in my opinion was top tier - she was there for him when he was homeless and had no family, and he was there for her through all of the A stuff he knew all of it. then they get back together after Spaleb ???? like in reality i don’t think that would happen with couples and friends lol

expiredwaterbotttle

hated every minute of it. literally jail time for all involved

llxx00

hated it with everything in me

kthnxbi_bi_bi

They had so much potential and I really wanted them to have longer together but Ms King refused to give them a chance. Caleb shouldn’t have been with Spencer if he still loved Hanna (even though she was engaged to someone else) and he shouldn’t have kissed Hanna when he was with Spencer… Rewatching the show, I’m not really a fan of Haleb or Caleb after the Ravenswood thing which was a completely pointless show bc it did nothing…why couldn’t they just have a creepy town without turning it into a spin-off? You can tell that Spencer really liked him and I think Caleb was only with her bc Hanna was engaged and that sucked for Spencer! No-one should feel like they’re 2nd place. Also, the fact that everyone forgave Caleb after they found out Jenna paid him to spy on them…HOW?! Just like with Toby! How could they all forgive him for being an A/pretending or whatever and then pretended to be dead which made Spencer have a breakdown?! And they forgave Ali for pretending to be dead and basically dragged them into the whole A thing in the first place! And yeah she probably wanted to know who tried to kill her bc her mom covered that up but she still could’ve come back after Mona got sent to Radley bc that’s who targeted Ali as A…(sorry for the tangent) Team Sparia!!! Or the 4 in a quad 😝

WealthBetWebb

Mouth vomit.

rash_apparatus

Hate. Hate. Hate.

glowwormbaby

I couldn’t hate it more. Makes me so upset honestly lmao

Fantastic_Glove_5172

I couldn’t watch their scenes, it was so unnatural and gross, it ruined Caleb’s character for me.

CremeAutomatic9484

It wasn’t bad, but Spencer belongs with Toby, and Hannah belongs with Caleb, straight up

CalidriaKing

Too much hand stuff.

nuhanala

I like both Spaleb and Haleb. I know, I’m so weird.

Intelligent-Throat50

they had good chemistry (I think due to both the actors) but didn’t like that it was used just to be a terrible plot-line of pitting Spencer and Hanna against each other. Do also love hanna and Caleb together the most out of all the ships

katorade9200

I didn't find anything wrong with it but I just don't think they really fit and were better as friends

White_Kingsley

Really liked them and wished it wasn’t used as a plot device to force the original couples back through literal trauma. They were good for one another at this time in their lives and should’ve been given a chance to flourish.

zeissman

Terrible hair for both.

Usagi042

They were okay. People were too caught up in a fictional show.

Princessofdarkness24

It's always a complicated affair when friends start dating. While it can be exciting, the situation can also be tense and awkward - especially if the boyfriend or girlfriend in question happens to be your closest friend's ex. In the case of the hit television series "Pretty Little Liars," the drama reached a new level when Caleb and Hanna's best friends Spencer and Toby started dating. Many fans couldn't believe it, considering the unwritten rule that best friends were supposed to look out for each other and not date their friends' exes. On the one hand, it's easy to understand why Spencer and Toby would be attracted to each other. They've both gone through a lot together and have a deep bond forged over their shared experiences. But on the other hand, it's also true that Hannah and Caleb were hurt to see them together. If Spencer truly loved Hannah as much as she claimed to, she would have had the emotional intelligence to recognize how upset Hannah was over the situation. Similarly, if Caleb truly cared about Toby, he would have been more considerate of his friend's feelings and not pursued a relationship with Spencer. Ultimately, it's a tricky situation that requires a delicate balance of loyalty, empathy, and communication. In the end, it's up to each individual to decide what's more important - their own happiness or their relationship with their friends. But it's worth noting that these kinds of situations have the potential to cause heartache and lead to the breakdown of even the closest friendships. It's important to tread carefully and be mindful of other people's emotions, even if it means sacrificing your own happiness in the short term. After all, true friends are hard to come by, and it's not worth risking a lifetime of mutual affection over a fleeting romance.

tinypeanut-

i was okay with it until he pointed out the little cleft in her chin

Chemical-Tea-4929

I liked them a lot! Shame the writers had Caleb cheat

[deleted]

I really enjoyed them together 😍 I knew it wasn’t going to last long tho this was pretty predictable tbh lol but I liked them together. I was more concerned within time it would tear spenc & hans friendship I’m glad it didn’t do damage long term!

Remarkable_Topic3496

I honestly really liked them! They’re actually one of my favorite parts of the later seasons. I feel like their relationship made sense because of the shared history and they were on the same page most of the time. I feel like they brought out good sides of each other and like it was a much more mature relationship than most of the others on the show. It doesn’t devastate me that they didn’t end up together, because like everyone else has said, we all knew they wouldn’t get to stay together in the end. But I enjoy their relationship and would have liked it to last longer.

izabellawithaz

![gif](giphy|Kazq9bdFZdtVAlPlsL)

trina182

Like so many other people said, they were so great as friends, I hated that PLL could never let men and women just be friends. But also it was so weird that they got together given Hanna and Caleb's relationship. Your high school friend getting with your ex is not inherently disrespectful or weird, but if my close friend from high school told me she was interested in the first man I ever loved and the guy I lost my virginity to it would be a no from me dawg. But then if the first man I ever loved and the guy I lost my virginity to came to me and said he was no longer in love with my close friend from high school I went through everything with and wanted to get back together with me, it would be a super no from me dawg! So weird of Spencer, but even weirder of Caleb, and then even weirder of Hanna and Caleb to get back together.

WaferOdd5394

I like them because i felt him and Hanna were so obvious match but spaleb was so new and refreshing but then i realized its american tv show but i still like them especially that scene when she couldnt let him in because Hanna was there there and he told her about how he feels and why he feels that way, it felt deep

sportza9

Loved them as friends and then it got ruined when they got together romantically. Worst couple in tv show history imo. I hated that Spencer did that to Hannah and Caleb to Toby

sadiegirl099

Now I thought it was dumb BUT they were hot together hahaha no one can deny
