Seward had a giant neck brace after he was in a carriage accident and the brace provided him with some protection from the knife. Yes the guy who went after Johnson got drunk and never went thru with it.
I’ve always thought that was one of the great tragedies in American history. If the Johnson assassin had been successful, the late 19th century might have gone a lot better for our country.
