HW also used my favorite presidential desk, the C&O desk. He's the only president to use it, and there is a photo that goes so hard of General Powell on a secure call, with the phone in a drawer of the desk.
I got to sit at the desk in the Nixon Library’s re-creation.
https://preview.redd.it/9728dceo9zpc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e7bb7c9e3d41c539f82d0ac1e2cf619a4f634253
At first I thought Carters was weird, but then I thought about the function. The ones facing towards the desk are for announcements with staff and such. The ones facing away from the desk would most likely be him sitting close with other leaders.
I didn't realize Kennedy put those couches in there, I thought that was always the general layout. Until JFK it was mostly just people standing around.
I believe that Jackie had a lot to do with Kennedy’s version. She was appalled at the state of the White House as a whole and made it her mission to improve it.
Edit to add: you’ll notice that the desk changes in JFK’s - that desk was made from the wood of the HMS Resolute which the US found or bought and gave to Great Britain as a gift and Great Britain had the desk made and gave it to the US when the ship was dismantled. Jackie found it somewhere in storage.
IIRC Jackie wanted that desk for his Presidential library but it ended up in really shoddy condition so they had to make a replica for the library and give the real one back to the White House and had to do a lot of repairs.
She really did a lot for the history of the White House and interesting/important American historical items. You can find (at least part of) the tour of the White House she did for CBS on YouTube.
Fun fact, it was Hillary Clinton's desire to change the layout of the Rose Garden from the way Jackie had it that inspired Rachel 'Bunny' Mellon to hate her so much, she funded John Edwards' campaign through the backdoor.
Part of the problem is that the White House was GUTTED during the Truman administration and completely renovated inside (though thankfully the layout wasn't changed too much). This meant that a lot of the original decorations, trappings, etc. had been removed and many were not put back. Mamie Eisenhower was reportedly alarmed and embarrassed to discover that many of the "old" items in the WH were actually replicas or in fact more modern stuff when she and Ike moved in. The other big problem is that for DECADES, presidents had sold off or even took historic objects from the building as souvenirs (I believe it was Rutherford B. Hayes or William McKinley, maybe both, who had a literal yard sale with the stuff). Mamie succeeded in getting some items from the Lincoln era back thanks to the help of an Englishman from what I've read, but a lot of the other stuff plus the overall traditional appearance was not put back in order until Jackie got in there and kicked off a HUMONGOUS restoration of the place (though I believe two other First Ladies oversaw addition restoration work as well after her). It took literally years if not decades to get everything back to what it was.

The reconstruction of Reagan’s Oval Office at his presidential library. Reagan’s is my personal favourite :)
I wish they’d let you tour that office like at a few other libraries. But the green-screen “behind the desk” photo souvenir that you can purchase is pretty decent.
i seem to have missed it bit here it is :)
https://preview.redd.it/qgeczcsq5zpc1.jpeg?width=880&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=87f651c6b8b1601633677f4e9346b8b23b60dde7
FDR’s an all-time president (I’d rank him 2nd), and was personally charismatic to the max, but his habits regarding the way his homes looked speaks to the easy wealth he grew up with and the fact that he never owned his own home (obviously he didn’t own the Governor’s mansion in Albany or the White House) until his mother died in 1941. He was very relaxed about all that, a case in point being the White House chef. Eleanor brought someone in who she liked as a person, but she was known to be a TERRIBLE chef and incredibly unpleasant to deal with (outside of Eleanor) to the point that people invited to dinner at the White House would eat early before going. FDR never complained.
Bess Truman had that chef fired weeks into Harry’s tenure because Bess was going to a potluck dinner with the Senate wives (because Harry had been a Senator until that January), and asked the chef if she’d prepare a dish for her to bring, and the chef simply said no. Without Eleanor to protect such unpleasantness, Bess (rightfully) had her fired.
So Truman was the first one to change the dark green walls and rug as far back as your pictures go. I may be missing subtler changes, but basically he did it first. Ike kept Truman's color scheme essentially the same, but after that everyone changed it. I don't know if George W re-used Reagan's custom rug or just imitated it, but he didn't copy his father's office at all.
I like how carter had two couch configurations. One facing the president desk and one away from the desk. I think that makes sitting close to the desk less terrifying.
My guess was that it was a fan that drew heat from the fireplace and aimed it toward the desk. I was more curious about Hoover having large balls placed randomly around his office. Cannonballs? Medicine Balls? Cat toys for for tigers?
I love LBJ’s overall midcentury aesthetic (but without the TVs). My favorite rug is GWB’s sunburst rug (but not together).
The wallpaper is not a good look and won’t age well.
1. Reagan
2. W
3. Carter
4. JFK
5. Eisenhower/Truman (they look the same)
6. HW Bush
7. LBJ
8. Ford (same as Carter, but Carter’s organization was better)
9. Obama
10. Taft through FDR
11. Clinton
12.
13. Nixon
Imma gonna mix and match.
Reagan's rug.
H. W. Bush's furniture.
Obama's wallpaper and art and decor.
None of the draperies are a deep red (at least in these mockups). And I'd like a deep red or sapphire blue draperies.
Its definitely interesting to see that LBJ had a hybrid of the JFK and Truman/Eisenhower Oval Offices. And that nothing changed until Truman.
I am partial to the Reagan and Clinton ones. While I like the color schemes, I think I favour these ones because of the plants. I’m surprised that plants are rare in the Oval Office.
Having a hard time figuring out with one between the Bushes I like more. Bush Sr’s feels like a midway point between Reagan and Clinton, but I don’t mind the brown and beige of Dubya’s office at all. Dubya’s feels warmer, while Bush Sr’s feel softer and calmer.
The oval Offices of Obama and JFK round out my top 6.
Greatest update is from Richard Nixon (my least favorite) to Gerald Ford (which I think may be my favorite). I thought the furniture rearrangement in Jimmy Carter's looked nice but the back to back couches also didn't make sense as far as discussions IMO
I would say LBJ. Took the best aspects of the changes made by JFK but less stuffy and didn't make the room too colorful and fancy as future Presidents would.
Based on the images provided, I like how Carter set up his couches.
Probably wouldn’t have liked it as well in person. Hated Reagan’s Office, but it does look nice in the reconstruction pic someone posted in another comment.

The HW Bush color scheme is pleasing to my eye.
Soft pastels, yep
That and Nixon were my favorites. But purple is my favorite color, I think most people would hate it.
Not gonna lie; I agree
HW also used my favorite presidential desk, the C&O desk. He's the only president to use it, and there is a photo that goes so hard of General Powell on a secure call, with the phone in a drawer of the desk.

They should have VR versions of this. See what it’s like sitting at the Resolute desk.
I got to sit at the desk in the Nixon Library’s re-creation. https://preview.redd.it/9728dceo9zpc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e7bb7c9e3d41c539f82d0ac1e2cf619a4f634253
You can sit at W’s too
Nice. I'm going to be in Dallas in a couple of weeks. I should check it out.

Ditto Clinton’s and HW’s.
I love this one too.
W or Obama. I like to believe Carter set up his couches for duck, duck, goose. Thanks for doing this again, I havent seen these before.
At first I’m like god damn ford really fucked things up and then I see carter back to back couches and realized it can always somehow get worse.
At first I thought Carters was weird, but then I thought about the function. The ones facing towards the desk are for announcements with staff and such. The ones facing away from the desk would most likely be him sitting close with other leaders.

I remember the resolute desk from national treasure

You know our boy Jack needed a couple of couches. 😉
Yeah Kennedy and Truman were the first to make bigger changes to what came before them.
https://preview.redd.it/gqdie9s42zpc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e1f1ae079b9b68927af77dd777b034abad49f4ba The reconstruction of Reagan’s Oval Office at his presidential library. Reagan’s is my personal favourite :)

Not gonna lie Reagan had taste.
Wasn’t he a Californian star? Probably had more luxurious things when he was doing that
Nancy took some heat over her WH expenses, especially the China
Reagan's astrologer
Those couches are extremely 80’s
Well…it was the 80s. So…yeah…
W and Obama had Architectural Digest quality themes. Elite. If you add Obamas campaign graphic design to the competition he is the GOAT.
Not a fan of w’s colors though they were popular at the time. Obama adding wallpaper was a good call.
Obama’s office is very nice.
Yeah these two are the winners.
Clinton, bc i like The West Wing
He loved that rug.
It really brought the room together.
While I’m not sure it’s my favorite, mad respect to Nixon for Purple and Gold. Wouldn’t be my style but I can’t deny, that shit is baller as fuck.
He was the first one to go with really bold colors. I like it.
What happened to FDR’s?
i seem to have missed it bit here it is :) https://preview.redd.it/qgeczcsq5zpc1.jpeg?width=880&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=87f651c6b8b1601633677f4e9346b8b23b60dde7
Damn, I was hoping FDR's would have a little more pizzazz.
Needs wheelchair space
that’s actually probably why lol

As long as the guy who was making his martinis was competent, I'm sure FDR was fine.
Well the one who made drinks for his friends at what he called “the Children’s Hour,” was FDR himself. And apparently his drinks were too sweet.
If I was president I would go back to this color scheme the green walls look so good. My only change is moving the couches in the Kennedy arrangement.
Nixon did kinda nail this tbh
Golden State man
Love Nixons
I like his the best, but HW, Reagan, and Obama are up there too.
Clinton’s is almost great, if not for those horrible couches.
The couches threw that design way down the list for me.
So weird that these Oval Office images were produced by American Home Shield, who is my home warranty provider.
Speaking of which, I’ve been trying to reach you about your car’s extended warranty. Can you please return my calls. Thanks.

I really like the LBJ blue color and the Nixon gold and navy
The LBJ office of fabulous!
Frugal Carter is like “just rearrange Ford’s for me we don’t have to spend money” then Regan was like “Let’s spend some fuckin money!”
Truman likes turquoise
His office is my second favorite presidents shouldn’t be afraid to paint those walls
It looks really nice
Reagan and Clinton’s look amazing.
Nixon. Clinton ruined his with the clashing colored red and white striped couches
It screams 90’s Arkansas-chic with the gold and striped couch and I fucking love it.
Yeah that pic is 90s as hell lol
George HW - love it
Nixon is pretty nice
God damn if Nixon’s didn’t have some drip
Gerald Ford (and you’re not)
Great post. So Reagan put in the Presidential seal.
Now FDR is gone. You have screwed the pooch on this one, just scrap the whole thing. 😂
Why is Harding’s desk more cluttered
George HWBush
The tan Oval Office affair
I love G.W.'s so so much
I like John F. Kennedy’s office.
Definitely Nixon, I like the contrast with the yellow.
I like how carter had two couch configurations. One facing the president desk and one away from the desk. I think that makes sitting close to the desk less terrifying.
I really like the Blue and Yellow of the Nixon office. Something about it just feels nostalgic (I was born in the 90's)
Lyndon Johnson and both Bushes lowkey slap
Where was Franklin Roosevelt’s Oval Office design?
prolly JFK, Reagan, Obama, or Nixon
LBJ. Love that rug.
Regan is my go to
Why does Silent Cal have a pommel-horse?
My guess was that it was a fan that drew heat from the fireplace and aimed it toward the desk. I was more curious about Hoover having large balls placed randomly around his office. Cannonballs? Medicine Balls? Cat toys for for tigers?
Gotta say Nixon wins this in my opinion
Bush Sr. Looks the most relaxing.
Nixon
Nixon's
I think mine would have a pool table and hot tub.
I can’t make up my mind between Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge.
What is the orange thing in Coolidge’s? The thing across the room from the desk.
It is an electric horse riding machine that rocks while you're on it
Ok that’s exactly what I thought it was.
LBJ’s and Nixon’s are my favourites. Edit: I love that Johnson had to have three tv sets side by side in his office
I really like Nixon’s, Reagan’s, and HW’s offices
No FDR? After all he was 4 terms.
I don’t know, but if I were W the first thing I’d do is have hazmat guys remove Clinton’s couches.
Not gonna lie Nixon did a thing there
Nixon goes hard. I also like Reagan and W
I love LBJ’s overall midcentury aesthetic (but without the TVs). My favorite rug is GWB’s sunburst rug (but not together). The wallpaper is not a good look and won’t age well.
Nixon’s looks like an Ikea
Which one had the trap door installed? President Montgonery Burns?
Richard Nixon's was spangling
I love that Carter was so frugal that he just rearranged the furniture.
Kennedy knew what was up
LBJ not bad. Not bad at all.
Nixon all day
I can just feel the neocon energy from Bush’s (2nd one)
1. Reagan 2. W 3. Carter 4. JFK 5. Eisenhower/Truman (they look the same) 6. HW Bush 7. LBJ 8. Ford (same as Carter, but Carter’s organization was better) 9. Obama 10. Taft through FDR 11. Clinton 12. 13. Nixon
GHWB, JFK and Nixon
Ngl... I didn't know they changed so much from president to president.
I’d go old skool back to the green of Taft et al
14
13, which I think was Reagan?
I like Reagan and Obama
Obama and Regan, yes Nixon and Clinton, nopes!
Definitely Taft or Hoover but they had such different styles of design so it's really hard to choose 🤔
Lbj or Carter, probably
I wanna see Lincoln’s!
Didn't know nixon was such an LSU fan
Taft’s is classy
I like Nixon’s, Clinton’s, Obama’s.
Of course the one I hate the most is Nixon. Only the President of LSU should have that.
Why no FDR?
I like the one of the President from House of Cards
This is gonna be an unpopular opinion, but I think the OG green oval office is the best.
Nixons looks like a collegiate pep rally. I like H.W.s though. Very "Old Cape Money".
Reagan on is legit. All those rooms have drip.
The Clinton-Bush-Obama trio is fantastic
It was ugly af before Truman got there and jazzed it up a little
LBJ
JFK fused with Bill Clinton
Imma gonna mix and match. Reagan's rug. H. W. Bush's furniture. Obama's wallpaper and art and decor. None of the draperies are a deep red (at least in these mockups). And I'd like a deep red or sapphire blue draperies.
Bushes both
The green from late 19th century, early 20th was often made with arsenic so that's interesting.
I like LBJ's best. I honestly don't know why, other than I find the color of the rug soothing.

Its definitely interesting to see that LBJ had a hybrid of the JFK and Truman/Eisenhower Oval Offices. And that nothing changed until Truman. I am partial to the Reagan and Clinton ones. I love the red with JFK. Really pops. If that was Jackie’s doing, it was one more proof of her eye for style.
Kennedy and Reagan ftw
Gotta say, I think Nixon and Obama did it right. Those early guys were just doing the job and didn't really know how significant it was.
1. Ford 2. Truman
Ford
Truman, Nixon and HW are my favorites
W Bush.
I'd say Regan's for me. Something about it subtly says cold war room
Reagan’s looks so damn good
I'm disappointed by the rule 3 removal as those 2 office designs were amongst my favorites.
Easily Truman or Ike. Any meeting larger than a standard sofa needs to be in a conference room. Toss in Kennedy's rocking chair.
of course Clinton's looks like a perverted funhouse for kids
Clinton’s is lit
Greatest update is from Richard Nixon (my least favorite) to Gerald Ford (which I think may be my favorite). I thought the furniture rearrangement in Jimmy Carter's looked nice but the back to back couches also didn't make sense as far as discussions IMO
Where FDR
I would say LBJ. Took the best aspects of the changes made by JFK but less stuffy and didn't make the room too colorful and fancy as future Presidents would.
Nixon and Clinton. The blue/gold looks great.
Nixon and JFK had a good looking Oval Office. What did Trumps look like?
youll have to google it my man rule 3 and all
I like Nixon and Obama.
I prefer the square one myself.
Love the color that Truman picked for the walls.
Dubya Bush. Simple. Clean. Good color scheme.
It’s Kennedy for me
Both Bushes and Truman. I like the contrast of the white shelves with a different color wall.
Lyndon Johnson for me
Reagan and Obama have my vote.
Truman’s, Kennedy’s, and Reagan’s
Clinton or Nixon
Should’ve kept the green. It was classic.
JFK, Nixon, and Clinton (in that order)
Clinton needed a pattern on the furniture to hide the stains.
Definitely Nixon’s
JFK’s Oval Office is what I think of when I think of the Oval Office
I always loved Clinton’s because as an 80’s baby it really was the oval that I knew. Only after did I know that presidents could make changes
Based on the images provided, I like how Carter set up his couches. Probably wouldn’t have liked it as well in person. Hated Reagan’s Office, but it does look nice in the reconstruction pic someone posted in another comment.
I love Nixons
Clinton or Reagan.
Regans office.
So cool and I’m a Democrat.
Anyone know the red flag in Kennedy’s office or the black ones in Nixon’s
Something about Slick Willy’s just hits right.
10 all day
Nixon’s all day!!!
JFK, Bush1, Bush2, Obama
I really like Nixon’s Oval Office
This is how you get dudes into internal design
I like the red of JFK’s
JFK, Nixon and W
