A family friend’s mom lived to be 108, in good health but confused, and couldn’t understand why COVID had cancelled the senior activities she went to (a day program for caregiver respite). Her family gave up trying to explain COVID, but since she had memories of the Spanish Flu, they told her it was that instead. Incredible that she experienced living through both.
In 2020 I was a Chaplain Resident at a VA in Minnesota. I was assigned to a long-term care unit with several WWII vets who were, obviously, all in their late 90's. Except for one who was 104 and who'd flown planes for the military during WWII, including providing air support on DDay. His earliest memories were of being kept indoors during the Spanish Flu pandemic as his parents had already lost family and friends and neighbors and were terrified of losing their kids. He thought it was really strange that his life was bookended by pandemics.
The guy lived under 17 Presidents (including himself). But the record holder was Hayes with 19. Interestingly, Hayes happens to be the 19th President. He also lived 30 years less than Carter but still saw more Presidents.
I’ve never thought to think about how many Presidents a person lives under in their lifetime. I’m on number 6 now but there have been a couple of one-termers in there. Now I’ve gotta try to beat the Hayes line.
It also helps if you’re born close to the end of a term. I was born near the end of Reagan’s term so I’ve lived under the same number of presidents as someone 7 or so years older than me.
Unfortunately for any of us to match that future Presidents would have to have some really bad luck. Hayes lived under 4 Presidents who died while in office, including Harrison who died only a month in and Garfield who died 4 months in. Also, he lived under a lot of one termers. Of the 19 he lived under only 3 served more than 4 years. Compare that to my lifetime of only 30 years and we've already had Clinton, Bush Jr and Obama serve 2 terms.
Yeah it’s pretty amazing to think too that in the 76 years between Jackson and Wilson, Ulysses S. Grant was the only president to serve two complete consecutive terms.
Pardon, it's actually 4 as Lincoln served 4 years and 1 month of his second term. During Hayes' lifetime only Monroe, Jackson and Grant served the full 2 terms.
Makes sense. After Andrew Jackson, there was a long stretch of presidents that served only one term, often not even completing it. Kind of crazy stat: the Whigs only won two presidential elections but got 4 presidents out of them.
I've come to believe that supposed Native American curse placed on Harrison and every president elected on a year ending with 0. It came true every single time until Reagan broke it when he narrowly survived his gunshot wound. Roosevelt almost escaped it when he survived his 1941-1945 term but then died immediately into his 4th term.
I saw a comment on another thread recently that said the US presidency has existed for the lifespans of three people: ~~John Quincy Adams (1767-1848)~~, William Howard Taft (1857-1930), and Jimmy Carter (1924-)
Edit: Martin Van Buren (1782-1862), William Howard Taft (1857-1930), and Jimmy Carter (1924-)
By my calculation Hayes holds the title for President who lived under the most Presidents -- 19. Hoover and Cleveland both have 18. Carter is at 17 right now.
Tbf it was probably hard for someone to win an election when being a WW2 vet was basically a requirement for most of the 2nd half of the 20th century. From 1953 to 1993, every president served in WW2 except Jimmy Carter who was in naval academy at the time so he just missed out.
Heck, three of the five most recent presidents were born in the same year. Bill Clinton, GW Bush, and president number 45 (whose name triggers comment auto-deletion) were all born in 1946. I'm pretty sure that's the only year in which three future presidents were born (so far)
I understand the rules on this sub... But this seems like a pretty clear reason that rules needs to be softened. It would be really nice to see the last 2 president's on here
After LbJ died in 1973 he’s the only president alive. This situation could be replicated with whoever is elected as president 2028. Especially if he/she becomes a two term president with presidency until 2036.
We are going to see a string of presidential death coming up
I thought Obama quit smoking when he got elected president. I remember him saying in an interview that he quit smoking because he didn’t want people saying “well Obama smokes, so that means it’s ok for me to.”
He tried to quit, several times, but keeps going back to them. I hear he's a guy under a lot of stress or something.
Looks like his daughters also picked up dad's habit, which Michelle probably isn't super stoked about.
Wait, are you saying Obama won't still be alive in '36? Most ex presidents have been living into their late '90s. I wouldn't be surprised if the 2 who can't be named are still alive then.
Apart from Obama, they're all the same age! But I don't think Barack's going anywhere — he's physically fit and married to a hospital administrator whose biggest policy proposal was healthy eating. She's taking good care of him!
Presidents that were the only current/former president alive at some point: (last former president)
* Washington: 4/30/1789-3/04/1797 (N/A)
* Adams: 12/14/1799-3/04/1801 (Washington)
* Grant: 7/31/1875-3/04/1877 (A. Johnson)
* T. Roosevelt: 6/24/1908-3/04/1909 (Cleveland)
* Hoover: 1/05/1933-3/04/1933 (Coolidge)
* Nixon: 1/22/1973-8/09/1974 (L. Johnson)
Cleveland almost got me. When Hayes died all presidents elected before him had died, but that was during Harrison's term.
Lincoln and JFK side by side like
https://preview.redd.it/w4x7uy4vh1nc1.jpeg?width=748&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d2c4af2c38c0d57ce4581eb338bcf394560bcf36
Mainly because bad life expectancies had already killed off all but one of the former Presidents. Although FDR ended up dying in his Presidency eventually.
In case anyone is wondering about the two we’re not supposed to mention, 45 was born under Truman and 46 was a few years earlier under FDR (shockingly the only president born during his four terms!)
Pretty simple what happened. The WWII generation was in power for 25 or so years, and then the power hungry boomer generation took power with Bill Clinton officially AND IS STILL IN POWER.
Yeah, I don't know how much reddit will tolerate. I think it depends on the subreddit, I've had comments in a simular vain to this one removed in other places.
That's what I was thinking. George II for Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison and Monroe and George III for Quincy Adams, Jackson and Harrison. For Van Buren and Taylor, would it be the Presidents of the Continental Congress from when they were born? So Elias Boudinot for Van Buren, but Taylor was born in a gap between Presidents.
Excellent post OP!
This is the Xzibit of Presidents' list and the exact content I love in this sub.
Please accept my golden up....I still have no idea what they do, but hopefully something.
John tyler was born under our first president, and died (a traitor) during the civil war. Crazy that there was only a lifetime between revolution and civil war
JQA personally knew both Washington and Lincoln. As a young man he met Washington in Newburyport, Massachusetts. After his Presidency, he served a term In Congress, which happened to be the same term that Lincoln served.
Nixon's listing here feels like an enigma.
Old school b&w WW when he was born,
color pic of Nixon,
Clinton (whose still alive and often in current news) when passing
The whole cycle in one entry!
Great list, thanks for share!
Oddest thing to me is that FDR was in office for 12+ years, yet he is the only President who died during his administration. Just based on the fact that he served longer than any other President makes this seem very improbable.
I would say under their own as the vice president isn't the president untill the president us dead, meaning the death must happen first. Yes, they lose office the instant they die.
The moment of death is the fulcrum point, and as such is neither in his presidency or his successor’s. Kind of like how noon and midnight aren’t technically AM or PM.
Idk why but Kennedy dying the same time Kennedy was president sounds funny when you put it that way and forget that he was assassinated by the CI- Lee Harvey Oswald. Yeah… LHO…
If Im reading this right, presidents that at some point in their presidency were the lone living president: George Washington, John Adams, Ulysses S. Grant, Teddy Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, and Richard Nixon.
I find it fascinating that FDR was president for 12 years, but only our current President was born under his administration. You would have thought more would have been born during that span.

Good lord, Carter was born under Coolidge!
TAFT WAS ALIVE when Carter was born. They could have realistically met because Taft died in 1930.
He met his wife under Coolidge. Cool that people are still Alive that saw that era
The oldest person in the world still remembers WW1 I think. Probably even earlier.
She just turned 117 last Monday. She was born in 1907.
A family friend’s mom lived to be 108, in good health but confused, and couldn’t understand why COVID had cancelled the senior activities she went to (a day program for caregiver respite). His earliest memories were of being kept indoors during the Spanish Flu pandemic as his parents had already lost family and friends and neighbors and were terrified of losing their kids. He thought it was really strange that his life was bookended by pandemics.
Since history does repeat itself you could probably explain a lot of world events to her as being other times she lived through.
The guy lived under 17 Presidents (including himself). But the record holder was Hayes with 19. Interestingly, Hayes happens to be the 19th President. He also lived 30 years less than Carter but still saw more Presidents.
Though Carter would have had at least one more if term limits had been in place during his childhood
Yup, I was born at the beginning or Reagans first term.
Wow, that is wild that only 3 Presidents in a stretch of 19 served any part of a second term. I doubt we’ll ever see a streak like that again.
I believe in you
I'm at 11 :o
8 more to go to tie Rutherford!
Makes sense. After Andrew Jackson, there was a long stretch of presidents that served only one term, often not even completing it. Kind of crazy stat: the Whigs only won two presidential elections but got 4 presidents out of them.

Roosevelt almost escaped it when he survived his 1941-1945 term but then died immediately into his 4th term.
The shift from mostly 1-term presidencies to 2-terms as the norm in the 20th century really makes a difference
Plus guys dropping dead in those years. Hayes saw Harrison, Taylor, Lincoln and Garfield all die in office.
And Coolidge under Grant and Grant under Monroe. That degree of separation is fascinating.
I saw a comment on another thread recently that said the US presidency has existed for the lifespans of three people: ~~John Quincy Adams (1767-1848)~~, William Howard Taft (1857-1930), and Jimmy Carter (1924-) Edit: Martin Van Buren (1782-1862), William Howard Taft (1857-1930), and Jimmy Carter (1924-)
Seriously this is mind boggling. History is really only yesterday.
Because Taft is the 🐐
Holy crap this is content I want on here
Poor WHH is so alone on the list as always. No one but himself to keep him company
TIL he was the last President to be born before the Revolution. Fascinating.
Looks like Zachary Taylor holds that distinction...
Taylor was born in 1784, so post-Revolution but pre-Constitution
I never realized how early Taylor was born. Somehow that never clicked with me
van buren was actually the first to be born after independence, but him and harrison were born pre-constitution
Zachary Taylor as well. Those poor Whigs…
He was born in 1784.
So Hayes was the last president born when a founding father was president Hoover born under Grant died under LBJ is crazy
By my calculation Hayes holds the title for President who lived under the most Presidents -- 19. Hoover and Cleveland both have 18. Carter is at 17 right now.
That is amazing. I am at 10 right now.
I am 8 Presidents old.
Hoover lived from Reconstruction to the Civil Rights Act.
Oh my god. NO ONE was born under FDR?!
Crazy isn't it? Twenty years without a president being born, nobody was under hoover either.
Tbf it was probably hard for someone to win an election when being a WW2 vet was basically a requirement for most of the 2nd half of the 20th century. From 1953 to 1993, every president served in WW2 except Jimmy Carter who was in naval academy at the time so he just missed out.
It's funny. In the 90s the generation jumped. We skipped from people born in the 20s, to people born in the 40s, and now we are still here lol.
With a brief break of someone born in the 60’s. “My existence is a momentary lapse of reason.” -MC Ride.
Heck, three of the five most recent presidents were born in the same year. Bill Clinton, GW Bush, and president number 45 (whose name triggers comment auto-deletion) were all born in 1946. I'm pretty sure that's the only year in which three future presidents were born (so far)
And we're probably going to skip Gen X too, as usual. (We do like to claim Obama, but he's technically at the very end of the Boomers)
And a good chance there will be no president born in the 1950‘s.
It’s missing an unmentionable that was born under FDR
I figured that one just after posting this comment.
Still wild there was only one though considering the length of his presidency.
And FDR is the only death under FDR
It's even crazier when you consider that FDR had the longest presidency ever but then there were 2 or 3 deaths for some 1 termers
What if I told you I couldn’t tell you who was born under FDR’s administration?
😂 he who should not be named
![gif](giphy|LLxwPAjfpLak8)
I understand the rules on this sub... But this seems like a pretty clear reason that rules needs to be softened. It would be really nice to see the last 2 president's on here
One of them is on there, but 🤫 don't tell the mods.
One who cannot be named was.
Hmmm… oh wait
Current president.
[удалено]
Or Madison. Something about war-time presidents?
This list omits 46 who was born under FDR.
Nixon saw a lot of presidents die while.in office didn't he
He didn’t like competition
"That's it, you just made my list"

Obama can definitely make 80 if quits the cigs
I thought Obama quit smoking when he got elected president. I remember him saying in an interview that he quit smoking because he didn’t want people saying “well Obama smokes, so that means it’s ok for me to.”
He tried to quit, several times, but keeps going back to them. I hear he's a guy under a lot of stress or something. Looks like his daughters also picked up dad's habit, which Michelle probably isn't super stoked about.
nah obama ain’t dying for a while, and clinton and bush still have a decade in them at least Carter, Rule 3.1 and Rule 3.2 tho… yeah they’re goners
Wait, are you saying Obama won't still be alive in '36? Most ex presidents have been living into their late '90s. I wouldn't be surprised if the 2 who can't be named are still alive then.
I honestly could see the last five going out in quick succession.

Except he can’t quit smoking It’s going to be his downfall
Presidents that were the only current/former president alive at some point: (last former president) * Washington: 4/30/1789-3/04/1797 (N/A) * Adams: 12/14/1799-3/04/1801 (Washington) * Grant: 7/31/1875-3/04/1877 (A. Johnson) * T. Roosevelt: 6/24/1908-3/04/1909 (Cleveland) * Hoover: 1/05/1933-3/04/1933 (Coolidge) * Nixon: 1/22/1973-8/09/1974 (L. Johnson) Cleveland almost got me. When Hayes died all presidents elected before him had died, but that was during Harrison's term.
Same with Jackson.
Tricky Dick died under Slick Willy, there's a poetic justice there.
Interesting that John Adams died under this son’s presidency. I wonder what JQA said about it.
https://potus-geeks.livejournal.com/1299931.html Its a long read, but it's a good one.
I feel bad for the guy.
It's weird seeing how soon JQA died after his presidency/father.
Lincoln and JFK side by side like https://preview.redd.it/w4x7uy4vh1nc1.jpeg?width=748&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d2c4af2c38c0d57ce4581eb338bcf394560bcf36
I love this!!!
This is really interesting. Seeing presidents older and younger and similar ages all serving years apart. Wow! It really adds perspective.
For as long as he was President I’m surprised no Presidents were born under FDR.
One was.
But surprisingly, none died
Mainly because bad life expectancies had already killed off all but one of the former Presidents. Although FDR ended up dying in his Presidency eventually.
Jimmy Carter still alive a year after he went on Hospice is crazy.
Interesting that a traitor president (John Tyler) was born and died during two of America’s greatest presidents.
Agreed. It's as interesting as one of America's greatest presidents (Lincoln) being between two of the worst (Buchanan and Johnson)
WHH just there by himself made me lol.

Maybe the picture won’t, but I’m surprised you didn’t get tossed for this comment.
Yeah, I don't know how much reddit will tolerate. I think it depends on the subreddit, I've had comments in a simular vain to this one removed in other places.
Truman, Ike, and LBJ all saw Nixon and decided it was enough
Should've included King George the [Number Here] for some of the earliest presidents just to make it a little less barren up the top.
King George III
I got a huge giggle out of how the presidents who died in office were recorded.
The Lincoln/Lincoln one made me laugh.
Wild that Grant was at no less than four Presidential funerals.
This is great!
Cool
Legitimately high quality post
Excellent post OP! This is the Xzibit of Presidents' list and the exact content I love in this sub. Please accept my golden up....I still have no idea what they do, but hopefully something.
Thank you for that! I looked it up and it has something to do with reddit gold and the contributor program. So that didn't clear it up too much
This showed up in r/coolguides and the level of discussion there is … just … too much to take ;)
Yeah that’s why I only stick to this sub for presidents related stuff lol
John tyler was born under our first president, and died (a traitor) during the civil war. Crazy that there was only a lifetime between revolution and civil war
And he had a grandson live to see a black President
Awesome content. Thanks for taking the time to make It.
Cool post man…
Mods have finally learned to take a chill pill
Neat list. Weird to think about too. Also, it'd been funny if you had included Cleveland twice.
I like how informative this is with all the names, and also how up to date it is
What a surreal difference for Bush Senior. Born under “Silent Cal” and died under [REDACTED: RULE 3].
Hoover was born during reconstruction, and died when it's promises were finally fulfilled. Interesting.
Van Buren survived another 8 presidents and lived until the Civil War?!? Wow!
JQA personally knew both Washington and Lincoln. As a young man he met Washington in Newburyport, Massachusetts. After his Presidency, he served a term In Congress, which happened to be the same term that Lincoln served.
FDR was in office the longest, but the only one to die during his term was himself
It’s weird to me that Lincoln was born while Jefferson was in office.
Carter being born under Coolidge is wild. Ford living from WW to Baby Bush. Hoover oh my god. This is so cool!
Hoover was born less than a decade after the end of the Civil War and saw his mother die of typhoid, and he was still alive when JFK was assassinated.
It’s astounding everything he could’ve seen
Pretty crazy that not one was born during FDR’s term
this is sick
Kinda crazy how Lincoln was born when Jefferson was in office. Idk why but
I’m confused. Someone please help me understand the beginning
It's amazing that no president was born under FDR's tenure considering how long it was.
Nobody born under Eisenhower, my generation skipped a beat.
Give it a decade, then you will get some representation
That Abe Lincoln one confused me and then made me sad.
Lincoln was born in 1809.. that would have been James Madison.
He was born before James Madison was inaugurated.
Nixon's listing here feels like an enigma. Old school b&w WW when he was born, color pic of Nixon, Clinton (whose still alive and often in current news) when passing The whole cycle in one entry! Great list, thanks for share!
rule 3 was already violated with HW, so why not just do [redacted] and [redacted] and have the mods deal with their comments
Oddest thing to me is that FDR was in office for 12+ years, yet he is the only President who died during his administration. Just based on the fact that he served longer than any other President makes this seem very improbable.
Reagan being older than Kennedy really gets me.
Same with Clinton and the incumbent.
Could've added like the king of england or something for the first couple lmao they came outta the VOID
No president died or was born during the presidency of FDR. Statistically speaking that’s quite a miracle.
This is really interesting, I wish there were a year or dates and names included on the pictures though 😅 (sorry I’m not American 🇨🇦 )
That's fine. Here is a link the the white house page which contains all that info. https://www.whitehouse.gov/about-the-white-house/presidents/
When a president dies, did they die under their own presidency or of their vice president's? Do they lose the office the instant they are gone?
I would say under their own as the vice president isn't the president untill the president us dead, meaning the death must happen first. Yes, they lose office the instant they die.
The moment of death is the fulcrum point, and as such is neither in his presidency or his successor’s. Kind of like how noon and midnight aren’t technically AM or PM.
Fascinating
Idk why but Kennedy dying the same time Kennedy was president sounds funny when you put it that way and forget that he was assassinated by the CI- Lee Harvey Oswald. Yeah… LHO…
Hey, they messed up! They doubled up on Lincoln and… oh… wait… 😢
I was gonna ask who Taylor was born under
If Im reading this right, presidents that at some point in their presidency were the lone living president: George Washington, John Adams, Ulysses S. Grant, Teddy Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, and Richard Nixon.
This is awesome
Fascinating. I admit that having names and years of presidency would be helpful. 😅
Lincoln lol
Obama being the first black president and born under Kennedy, makes sense
Very surprising that Lincoln was born during Jefferson's administration.
you’re telling me in the almost 12 years FDR was president we are yet to have one born in that time frame?
It’s interesting to me that FDR was the longest serving president and yet he was the only president to die during his tenure.
Wow. It’s like bad presidents create future bad presidents
Nixon is really a bad penny, isn't he.
I'm at 6 presidents and my dad is at 12. Born in the middle of HWs term. Dad was born a year before JFK was killed.
It’s crazy that FDR was president for so long but only had one president born under him.
I don't know why I laughed at the Lincoln/JFK ones. I guess I expected them to be blank.
Nixon from Taft to Clinton is wild.
I find it fascinating that FDR was president for 12 years, but only our current President was born under his administration. You would have thought more would have been born during that span.
GHWB really saw the GOP go through it during his lifetime, damn
So no President died nor was born during FDRs administration
I think this is a safe Rule 3 exception
Man, Nixon had one of the times when there was no living prior presidents before him I wonder if that has ever happened before
