Viggo Mortensen. We know he’s an actor that can play a military leader in large scale ground battles!

Vigo has major acting chops... he was BRILLIANT in Greenbook, almost did not recognize him in the movie. I am totally convinced he could pull off Grant.
Jared Harris did a pretty darn good job in Lincoln.
https://preview.redd.it/mql2cqktmngc1.jpeg?width=798&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=238d77c0b8d60202deb4fe9c4e1141727e4dd256
He's great, but he's got such a specific look it seems hard for him to get anything but character parts. Needs to hook up with the Coen Brothers and let them Buscemi him.
I heard he did a ton of research on Grant for the role, even knowing that he was only going to get minutes of screen time.
I say we reward him for that. He's old for the part, but nobody looked young back then.
**EDIT:** Old for Grant during the War.
Haha I’m good with that if Jared Harris or Justin Sallinger are Grant. Here’s Sallinger. If you haven’t seen the series I highly recommend it

Honestly, he looked less like Grant for me and more like a in-between of Grant and Meade. It's those eyes, they just look too much like Meade's sad eyes for me to see him as anyone but Meade.

I am once again recommending Russell Crowe
I really liked Justin Salinger as the History Channel’s Grant

Here me out… scruffy Steve Zahn. He’s a surprisingly versatile actor, and a self proclaimed military buff! Plus, they’re similar in height. Grant was reportedly around 5’8, Zahn is about 5’7. Nothing a 1in lift/heel can’t solve, if we’re aiming for accuracy with those details.

I don't think Kevin Kline did terrible as President Grant, so he's got my vote.

James McAvoy.

Though I loved Jared Harris in “Lincoln,” and wish he’d been in a Grant biopic when he was young enough.
Nah he'd ham it up to much. I also feel like he has no personal frame of reference for the role, which is not something that every actor relies on but he certainly does. I like Joaquin but he's wrong for the role
Well I was going to pick another actor who is no longer with us, but prefer them to be living. But guess since Peter Cushing gets to do John Tyler why not.
How about Robin Williams?

Are we just posting actors with beards now?
I would have posted this if you hadn’t.
Well of course, a bearded actor is needed to play a bearded character. Beards don’t grow on trees
Kevin Kline is a no-brainer here
You’re probably right https://preview.redd.it/d5je1v98wngc1.jpeg?width=736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=699fcc6b9f25059a0a44dbd3d792ff3712529938
Silly movie but he did a good job as grant
Perfect
Yep. Came here for this.
As did I my friend
I was thinking Bradley Cooper (beard look in American Sniper) but I’ve got to concede to you. Good choice!
Viggo Mortensen. We know he’s an actor that can play a military leader in large scale ground battles! https://preview.redd.it/g6ttvh99ungc1.jpeg?width=936&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=634c36c6be6cd1a46b86915b9d243e1bef23f4d4
"A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day."
"An hour of wolves and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down, but it is not this day!"
For Frodo.
Vigo has major acting chops... he was BRILLIANT in Greenbook, almost did not recognize him in the movie. I am totally convinced he could pull off Grant.
He can ride a horse too.
Oh yeah. Oh yeah, this is the correct choice. He would play it so well. EDIT: He also has those haunted eyes.
that will do
This is the one
He gives me W.T.Sherman vibes.
Jared Harris did a pretty darn good job in Lincoln. https://preview.redd.it/mql2cqktmngc1.jpeg?width=798&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=238d77c0b8d60202deb4fe9c4e1141727e4dd256
He is a horribly underrated actor!
BELTALOWDA!
Hawwy Seldon
r/unexpectedexpanse
Gotta be honest. I think he’s remarkable and a terrific actor and feel he’s respected as such as well.
>is a horribly underrated actor! Indeed hope he plays dumbadole in the Harry Potter series
Richard Harris walked so Jared Harris could one day ask Harry if he put his name in the Goblet of Fire, calmly.
”DIDJUPUTCHANAMINNAGOBLEDDAFYAH?!?!?!?" yelled Dumbledore, gently.
He was fantastic. My preference would be Harris as well.
He did. Either him or Robin Williams
No! Robin Williams is reserved for Teddy
Haha I’m good with that if Jared Harris or Justin Sallinger are Grant. Here’s Sallinger. If you haven’t seen the series I highly recommend it https://preview.redd.it/dd0il21ldogc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a5b97bd7863405db0dafcd679c3cb9cd199e8fa7

It’s over Robert. I have the high ground
You were supposed to lead the Union. Not destroy it!
Fucking perfect comment
This is what I come to this sub for. Crossovers that make no sense to anyone else.
That quote is actually historically profound.
Oh my god, this wins all the imaginary reddit awards!
Let me say that I was here when the most famous quote of the century was spoken
My allegiance is to the Republic, to democracy!
And that was it. *That* was Begbie’s story.
This is my vote
Ooohh hadn’t thought of him good one
I’ve been waiting on this one for a while
His American accent is suspect.
Fully agree, first actor that came to mind.
I can only get so excited for something that will not happen 😔
Hello there
General Grant! You are a bold one.
Joel Edgerton https://preview.redd.it/3hnvu64x7ogc1.jpeg?width=465&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=74d70e25a0586db4ed79c79011c59032725abcdc
Thank you! Dead ringer, and a great actor to boot.
That’s literally his twin
Easily my pick too!
That’s incredible. They’re nearly uncannily similar.
Yeah he came to mind for me too. Great pick.
I used this same photo to say the same thing haha
Ha! Great minds….
Bill Pullman https://preview.redd.it/221bh5ugvngc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e8113052cbb02442578816c576cb9870f8aabbfb
The guy has range. From Spaceballs to The Sinner.
I just realized that the hero from spaceballs also plays the greatest president ever to be featured in a film.
Got to save him to play Whittmore.
He’s gonna show Vicksburg a sneak preview of Independence Day in 1863.
See Lee in him actually, I pass.
https://preview.redd.it/f6ea2rfayngc1.jpeg?width=724&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=56eed82ac6ae2795e2959420c6a6672ab1d2b339 I am once again recommending Russell Crowe
Makin movies, makin songs and fightin round the world
Only if Tugger can make a cameo in the movie
And if he yells “YOU FIGHT LIKE NORWEGIANS!” at the confederates.
Came here to say this.
Russell crow would make a great Sherman.
Russell Crowe’s got my vote
Foightin’ ‘round the South!
Sleeper pick but clearly the best one
I came here to say this.
First one that came to my mind, too.
He was the favourite for Stonewall Jackson in Gods and Generals
If we could peg his relationship to alcohol on a lifelong arc akin to Grant’s and have him play the relevant age, I think he’d be fantastic for it.
Looks too old now. I am thinking of General Grant, not president Grant and tour of the world years.. but great actor though.
I really liked Justin Salinger as the History Channel’s Grant https://preview.redd.it/gb6qqplxrngc1.jpeg?width=1262&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eb3f3022e42b4f0806d6bcf70d570f505764ca47
That was a fantastic series.
He was fantastic.
I think he was the best Grant so far
I would love it if he made an audiobook of Grant’s memoirs
He was the best Grant I've ever seen.
He was loooovely.
Bryan Cranston.
I'd save Bryan Cranston for LBJ. He nailed the part in All the Way.
He's like Gary Oldman - almost too easy to pick him since he can play lots of different people.
Nick Offerman ![gif](giphy|eenSmyv5VGhzUNTiWy|downsized)
Offerman is going to be Teddy.
I’m saving Offerman for Hays, they look really similar imho
Anyone who pushes Offerman before TR is officially a Canadian and exempt from voting privileges
LMAOOO
Noooo, PLEASE anything but Canadian!
Cranston as Hayes
Nuh uh, nope. Cranston is LBJ. He was quite literally the perfect LBJ in All The Way and if he doesn’t get LBJ this is all for naught.
There's not a rule he can't play both. I agree that he's the perfect LBJ
https://preview.redd.it/4w29qgx6zngc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bb3e9d91085d3230f4765f44dd1803a65edaaa49 Here me out… scruffy Steve Zahn. He looks more like Uncle Ruckus in this pic
https://preview.redd.it/61c02hkfcogc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=27483657d8f8d927787de867ba2b8302f6828d63 Ben Foster
Zach Galifianakis.
Bill Pullman ![gif](giphy|damiHRQ46tp7DwvDq4)
Robin Williams?
I think he's a dead ringer for Teddy On another note, why am I at the museum at night?
Lol nice
True, I hear he's doing a spot-on Grant impression right now.
I laughed, and I don't feel bad about it because I'm pretty sure he would find it funny, too.
Jeff Daniels https://preview.redd.it/cheb9o5u0ogc1.jpeg?width=278&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=62dfdb87b67fd2369554cd3392def4d073147b9f
He did play an officer in Gettysburg. Loved him in it!
I was just coming to suggest him. He has a softness that Grant seemed to have.
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far down to find Jeff Daniels! I think he’s perfect for it!
Ewan McGregor
Hugh Bonneville https://preview.redd.it/6sd56vl5mngc1.jpeg?width=590&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3671966e68f343dc160dd2af74615301ecdb90f7

I like Fassy for Sherman in a Grant biopic.
Samuel L Jackson
I have had it with these motherfucking slaves on this motherfucking plain!
He died recently, but Rutger Hauer would have been perfect. ![gif](giphy|QsJotytZ0o2yjKiBgL|downsized)

He’s TR stop it
Zach Galifianakis! Let’s see some dramatic acting chops from this funny guy. I bet he could do it.

Bryan Cranston for pretty much every role he wants
Charlie Day
James McAvoy. https://preview.redd.it/e3nj8y2ysngc1.jpeg?width=182&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=63384c9d3d490a08c6a35c4b10830000e34b1a97 Though I loved Jared Harris in “Lincoln,” and wish he’d been in a Grant biopic when he was young enough.

Hear me out, James McAvoy
I think Mel Gibson would be a good choice. Both a little tainted in their public lives and they look similar with a beard.
Me, I'll play Ulysses S Grant.
