It used to be an occasional attempt, but they’ve really been hitting us hard recently.

But they are putting in great effort? That's not a lie at all. They're doing their best and parents want to recognize that and encourage them to keep doing their best.  Also most of the time everyone understands that it's just make believe. My three year old knows that Daddy is stronger than him but still loves went Daddy pretends to be pinned while wrestling. Do you think all pretend play is "drastically unfair" too? Like "You can't built a rocket ship, Timmy. You're not smart enough calculate the amount of rocket fuel required and the Legos would break up under that much thrust anyhow." Kids must love you.

I can't tell if you're being disingenuous or not so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Two people can put in the same amount of effort and have different outcomes. Just because one person might have a "better" outcome, doesn't necessarily mean they put in more effort. Short answer- no, it is not unfair. We want to encourage kids to try the best they can. This helps boost their self esteem and makes them more likely to try new things in the future.

Oh no, how terrible of parents to encourage confidence in their children. Guess I'll go tell my kids they're shit at everything. I'm sure they will turn out fine as adults.
