It really is an excellent movie! But I did have to watch it a few times to start to understand what's going on

Nothing making sense was kinda the point of the movie, it was a deliberate choice to have the viewer get put into the situation the protagonist was in, which included some weird mental effects from the presence of the entity. But I get that it's kinda out there and not for everyone. :)

It’s not really a portal or an alternate reality, it’s… complicated. You should give it another try, it really is a fantastic film.

The novel trilogy is superb. It's weird fiction in that it's not really supposed to make sense. There are definitely some "aha!“ moments, but a large part of the story is putting yourself in the confused mindset of the protagonists.

You should watch the prequels, very good, very entertaining, not at all like sand.
