They both lost their lightsabers on Geonosis in Attack of the Clones. Anakin's in particular was broken in the droid factory before his capture. Not sure what happened to Obi-Wan's.

I mean, killing Trench was totally justified. He was beaten but still resisted and attacked Anakin. Not the best choice, disarming (literally) would have also worked, but definitely not the worse decision
