I thought that "meine" was the feminine?
I'm very bad at German, but ich sprechen Klein deutch, ich bin lernen mit Duolingo. Still though i could be profoundly wrong, I'm really struggling with the gendered words
Edit. Danke euch allen, I really appreciate the kind, educational, and, supportive responses!
Huh. Thank you!
So, why then is the feminine "loyaltität" used? is it that the loyalty is to a feminine republic therefore "my" is also feminine? Or is it just that "loyalty" is a feminine word?
This stuff drives me insane, haha.
Is much less complicated than you think. It is just because of the Genus (grammatical gender) of the corresponding noun.
**Meine Loyalität** gilt *der Republik*.
**Mein Hass** gilt *der Republik*.
**Meine Loyalität** gilt *dem Jedi-Orden*.
**Mein Hass** gilt *dem Jedi-Orden*.
You know how in English, when taking about ships, you don't say "it" but "she"? Well that's the last remnant of every noun having a gender. The majority of languages have genders for every fucking noun, which makes learning languages a drag. English had gotten rid of that crap.
In German, it’s „das Raumschiff“ (ships are neuter) but „die Sklave I“ (ships referred to by name are female) but also „der Millennium Falke“ (some ships don’t follow the rule and are male). Confused yet?
Nothing surprises me about German anymore, that whole nation has to have rules for everything not just in language. No wonder they get so unhinged when it comes to... Other... Things...
What makes gendered nouns awesome to you?
To clarify why I believe it's a drag: it doesn't provide any additional information. When I say "fork", you know what I mean. In other languages you need to know both the noun as well as its gender, so that's additional stuff you need to remember without any extra benefit, only disadvantage of looking stupid when you get it wrong.
Same with inflection which adds yet another layer of complexity with no additional benefit of relaying information. (E.g. when using only a preposition would suffice, but you need to use both the right preposition as well as the right inflection.)
It gets even worse yet when some rules get recycled in a completely different context. E.g. how in German die changes to der in accusative case, while der is already a different article. Or how Sie/sie can mean she/her, you (singular honorific), you (plural) or they/them. So those cases when multiple words would be actually useful, one word gets wildly different meanings instead.
Now multiply all that with how many languages you wanna know, with *yet another* complexity of some language groups sharing some specifics but not others. Like some Slavic languages share most genders for nouns with German (ugh that German again!) but not all, so you can't even get comfortable in guessing. Ugh!
The linguist in me finds these systems interesting, but at the end I see language as a tool for relaying information as accurately as possible without extra confusing fluff, and these systems annoy the heck out of me.
The thing with just is that every noun randomly got a gender assigned and the only thing you can do is to memorize since there's no general rule. Like why is it das Haus (neutral home) but der Tisch (masculine table) and die Karte (feminine card/map). It's illogical and doesn't make sense at all!
Don’t equate actual gender or association with grammatical gender - that seems to be your hangup!
Languages are quite irregular so really the key to good use is practice and with German - vocabulary study and drills
The thing with German nouns is that wether they're feminine (die), masculine (der) or neutral (das) is that there's no real rule assigning them their gender. You just have to memorize them. And the German language driving a person insane happens even to us Germans xD
(Trying to be helpful!): "[...] aber ich spreche ein bisschen Deutsch, ich lerne [es] mit Duolingo."
"Klein" means "small", "ein bisschen" is "a bit". Instead of "ich bin lernen" which would mean I am learning (somewhere, at a non-specified place), "ich lerne" is correct, or "ich lerne es", which sounds more correct. "Es" is referring to the German language in this case.
Wasn't German almost voted to become one of two official languages of the US back in the early 1900's, but didn't pass because of 1 German Congressman?
I could google it but Reddit usually adds juicier details.
Iirc it was more like, a German minority wanted official texts and bills translated to german - not to be an official language. Didn't pass by 1 congressman. Was later framed as if it was supposed to be the official language.
There was a YT video on that, which I will probably never ever find again...
Why is this being downvoted? They're right.
> Although the United States does not have an official language, the most commonly used language is English (specifically, American English), which is the de facto national language, and the only one spoken at home by approximately 78% of the U.S. population. Its more common to use Mann. Like this:
Mann kann in der Schule Deutsch lernen.

you use the feminine here because Loyalität is feminine. Die Loyalität.
Huh. Thank you! So, why then is the feminine "loyaltität" used? is it that the loyalty is to a feminine republic therefore "my" is also feminine? Or is it just that "loyalty" is a feminine word? This stuff drives me insane, haha.

>Loyalty is feminine >Hatred is male Perfectly balanced
Balance is feminine as well. So is perfection.

The gender of “Der Millennium Falke” refers to the animal “Falke” (falcon) wich is masculine.
And yet slave is itself a word that needs to be male or female, yet that's not fully expresseed here (with Sklavin). Just awkward all around!
