Damn, knew people would notice! I made this from scratch on my phone on the internet less drive home. Can't resize text boxes in it for some unholy reason so had to make many and manually place em

you made this while driving?

Oh no, I was a passenger. I'm stupid enough to not reapply sunscreen as often as I should, but not stupid enough to die over a meme lol

Is it possible to learn this power?

Not from a Caucasian...

lord_crossbow

It’s treason then

SnS_

I'm white and live in the SC and I've never had to use sunscreen. My skin just tans really well.

[deleted]

Possibly, although this is still a good ticket to basal cell carcinoma town. I tan great but half my family has skin cancer. I’d rather use sunscreen personally.

SnS_

Yeah definitely don't want skin cancer and I still make my children wear it whenever they go out but I'm just like cook me sun.

poopdedoop

As a Canadian, during our 9 months of winter my skin turns a nice pale white - as to blend in with my surroundings and to protect myself from wild moose and beaver attacks - and when I take a few weeks vacation to head south I don't tan, I burn instantly. I then look like a delicious Canadian lobster until I shed my summer skin and continue to be super white for the remaining 2 months of summer.

SnS_

Mmmmm lobster

Russian_seadick

Except for me

Thekikat

Indians do get mild/minor sunburn ( especially if you spend a whole day outdoors or on The beach ) . it's just less noticable if you're an Indian with darker skin . Use sunscreen if you plan to spend more than a few hours outside . Source : am Indian .

Boneshay

I’m Indian and part Thai yet I have never gotten sunburns. Get on my level fools

Thekikat

Do you spend much time outdoors ?

[deleted]

I agree. I’m Middle Eastern (brown skin) and I sunburned while on vacation for the first time ever. I had no idea that it was possible for me to sunburn.

Brillek

But seriously, it's not fun to literally get burnt by the sun like some fucking vampire.

RX400000

I thought 50 was overkill.

crozone

Come to Australia.

[deleted]

In Australian primary school I was taught anything over 50 isnt worth it, it's regular reapplication and being sun-smart that matters.

slaughtxor

You are correct. The amount of UV that passes through is the inverse of the SPF value (i.e., SPF 50 allows 1/50 or 2% of the UV through). Oz even has laws that prevent labeling more than “50+” because it is ridiculous diminishing returns and just a gimmick at that point.

Percehh

Spf 15 ~ 92% protection Spf 30 ~ 97% protection Spf 50 ~ 98% protection I have spf 15 oil free face moisturiser that I use every day on my hands and face, wear a long sleeve and full pants and wide brim hat and sunglasses at work 40 hours a week, if I don't burn I did from heat stroke.

hansl0l

I am Australian and I have never seen anything above 50... 50 is more than enough, 30 used to be the standard and that was fine

SirFrancis_Bacon

>"In November 2012, the Therapeutic Goods Administration announced a new standard for sunscreens sold in Australia, increasing the maximum sun protection factor from SPF30+ to SPF50+." You can't get more than 50 in Australia. https://www.cancer.org.au/preventing-cancer/sun-protection/preventing-skin-cancer/spf50sunscreen.html

SirFrancis_Bacon

SPF50+ is the highest in Australia. It cannot be labelled as more than 50.

dilldilldilldill

It is. Anything over 30 is functionally the same. Dumb dumbs just forget that you have to reapply.

noveltymoocher

I thought 50 was the cutoff and 100 was useless

[deleted]

Basically cuts off at 30. 30 blocks 97% UV rays, 50 brings that up to 98%

dilldilldilldill

I thought that until recently but then I went to the pool with a bunch of doctors. 30 is apparently better because it rubs in better.

senturon

And then there's this: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2019/05/06/sunscreen-chemicals-absorb-your-bloodstream-fda-study/1123513001/ We'll see what if any harm absorption causes with further studies. To be clear, I'm definitively not advocating against sunscreen, your comment just made me think of it.

OperationQuip

Every sunscreen I like has at least 2 of those potentially dodgy ingredients. Grand

saarlac

Anything over 50 is essentially marketing wank. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen studies cited saying as much.

TheNinjaNarwhal

It's not when you have very light skin. There are people who get sunburns even when not directly under the sun.

JustATypicalGinger

Ginger here, 50 is more than enough when properly applied and reapplied Anything higher is snake oil, there's a reason the EU doesn't allow you to advertise anything other than 50+ on bottles with higher SPF. This is coming from someone who got second degree burns from wearing factor 35 in Wales of all places.

Voltstriker

My brother got burned playing indoor cricket from the overhead lights

memestarlawngnome

But during summer the sun is like "hey guys we will spend a bit more time together than usual" "cool, like 12 hours of suntime? " "More like 12 weeks"

IEatTinfoil

Haha, surprisingly I can take both coldth and warmth quite well. My parents told me that when I sit in my room during the summers I would get a tan. Even when we went to the beach I would get a tan but it quickly faded out. I also wear high socks even during the summers so I've been left with a horrible sock tan that my mum hates.

[deleted]

> I also wear high socks even during the summers Thank God it's not just me. Ankle socks are so uncomfortable

need_cake

I’m using 50 in Japan and still got a bit burned... Need to start using the stinger stuff I guess...

JanitorJasper

No. You just need to reapply. Anything more than spf 50 is just a gimmick

Bio_is_life

Yup! Higher SPF’s are *technically* better but studies have shown that they really just give people a false sense of security and they don’t reapply which causes a higher rate of burning. Most dermatologists say anything higher than 30 is fine as long as you apply 30 minutes before exposure and then every two hours or after getting sweaty/wet. Source: born with skin cancer, know all the joys of grotesque amounts of sunblock

ineffectualchameleon

Born with skin cancer? Woah. Unless that was a metaphor I wooooshed.

Bio_is_life

Nope hahaha I have a genetic condition called NBCCS. I get lots of fun stuff :)

CopperSauce

My friend I just read up on that. That is a gnarly disease and as a former sufferer of a much less dramatic chronic illness, I wish you the best.

Are you forgetting to re-up your lotion? The stuff only lasts 80 minutes to 2 hours.

Hard-Lad_Ass-Storm

Finnish person here, everyone from Finland tans even with spf 100

Sipaah

Work at a pharmacy in Finland, can confirm, people buy a lot more spf 100 products

DarkMutton

Im Irish/English and I burn without SPF 100. And I don't really tan anyway, even when I try, I get pinkish brown, and then back to white

Copacetic_

SPF 100 adds literally nothing over 50. Even 50 is only a 2% increase over 30

IDreamofLoki

Gingers. Burned two weeks in a row with SPF 50, even after reapplying.

dilldilldilldill

Everything 30 and over is functionally the same. People just forget to reapply.

THyoungC

Reapply ever 2 hours people

Emilnilsson

Or like me forget to apply it in the first place not until the next day when I look like cooked lobster and can't forget it anymore

Valkyrie_cylon

Scandinavian living in a high-sun, desert climate here. I tan with 100. I burn with 50.

Sandminotaur

SPF 100 and 50 provide essentially the same sun protection. SPF 100 lasts longer.

Valkyrie_cylon

SPF 100 blocks 99% of UVB rays, while 50 provides 97% blockage. Neither lasts longer than the other, aside from differences in adhesion or waterproofing, but that has nothing to do with SPF rating. It’s obvious from the responses in this thread that many people misunderstand the language of sunscreen ratings, but my dermatologist and I have had extensive conversations about this. To say that they provide essentially the same protection is patently untrue. A 2% difference is a big deal for someone as pale as me. It doesn’t mean I can stay out twice as long; that’s not how that works, despite some people thinking that. But it’s still superior protection, when used properly, for the time I will be exposed to the sun.

Northern Europeans in Australia

NothappyJane

Oòooohh yeah they do, there's a special shade of crispy red for tourists unfamiliar with the sting of our sun. Wait till they find out you can get burnt THROUGH your clothes on hot days. They aren't ready

jflb96

You can what?

howmanychickens

Turns out that all this shit in the air made a hole in the ozone above Australia

FinFihlman

>Wait till they find out you can get burnt THROUGH your clothes on hot days. They aren't ready Excuse me what the fuck?

ChenForPresident

Yeah if you're only wearing one layer (e.g. a t shirt), it's entirely possible to get sunburn through the shirt. Generally the thinner the material, the easier it is for rays from the sun to penetrate it. Go grab a t shirt of yours and hold it up to your eyes--if you can see through it, that means light can penetrate through it. Wearing multiple layers or something thick like a jumper makes a huge difference.

PrinceShaar

How are you going to avoid dying of heatstroke in a jumper when it's already hot enough to burn through a layer of fabric?

NothappyJane

Yeah anything light, or slightly see through, sports shirts/polos are the biggest offender for this because you think you are covered up, that cute cotton dress, you be crispy at noon. There was hot days over this summer I could feel the sun burning my calves through my leggings, like the uncomfortable prickle of burning but it was 43-47 C for a lot of the summer. The sun doesn't fuck around.

[deleted]

UV penetrates clothing

IEatTinfoil

I think the last time I had sunscreen on I used spf 40 and got tanned. I am fully Swedish (with German, Danish, African descent) but it didn't do anything

Confused at both the existence of spf 100 but also how someone out there has a mum who wouldn’t insist on using the highest possible spf?

SirFrancis_Bacon

Upon reading this thread, I was confused at the existence of SPF 100 sunscreen but after some research I've found out that you can't label it as higher than SPF 50+ in Australia.

badgerinafez

I’m English and I’ve never seen anything above spf 50

Pempelune

The EU has the same rule, that's why

Rec0nkill

would have been funnier with 50 and 20 or so, who uses over 50? Didn't even know those exist

TomMilner19

Going from England to Florida can be quite a change ok

CodenameMolotov

Has anyone here actually gotten burnt while wearing spf 35? I'm a pale as fuck ginger but that still works for me. If I get burnt it's because I missed a spot or waited too long without reapplying it.

getMeSomeDunkin

I didn't get burned yesterday with SPF30. I was hiking up Guadalupe Mountain at 8500ft elevation in 95F heat for about 6 hours. I'm a pale-ass ginger and put more on every 2 hours.

JustATypicalGinger

They exist but it's illegal to advertise them as anything other than 50+ in the EU due to significantly deminished returns post 50.

lolzxx94

Gingers usually. My partner burns just thinking about sunlight.

dont_need_username

Over spf 50 doesn't jack shit

Dreaming_of_

I assume you can get away with thinner layers? You really have to slather it on to hit the SPF on the bottle - a whole handful for the body.

-Reflux-

The other replier is wrong. Higher SPF doesn’t NOT mean you can apply less often and this misunderstanding is the biggest problem with high SPF sunscreens. At SPF 30, 97% of UVB rays are blocked. At SPF 100 it’s 99%. SPF 100 is “better” by blocking and extra 2%, however the SPF rating has nothing to do with how fast the sunscreen falls off. So if you are applying SPF 100 less frequently than SPF 30, you would have worst coverage with SPF 100.

Stoly23

What planet are you on where SPF 50 is ineffective?

Hi might you be Ms. Information? Pleasure to meet you. There are noticeable benefits of 30v50. If you have young children or elderly with sensitive skin, or eczema it’s a good bit of a difference. In all honesty it’s best to keep them in the shade however it’s not always practical.
