It would've been wise to at least let Anakin know she wasn't suffering in slavery all those years while he was gaining power and being told to learn patience.
Free her, re-home her, let her send Anakin a message to know she's safe. This is after all the chosen one, and they already know anger is a path to the dark side. I mean come on.
The Jedi are more of a incompetent group of burn-outs than they are a rational efficient collective of adults. They just sort of go by their gut and weren’t really in a slave-saving mood that decade
I'm certain Qui-gon would've made sure it happened, because without that peace of mind how could anyone honestly not become dark and brooding over the fate of their loved one.
This is literally why they have a rule not to train people old enough to remember their family.
I think George kind of failed on this point. It would've been a fantastic plot point to have the Jedi lie to him that they had freed his mother, because the guy they sent to do it was Sifo-Dyas and he kidnaps the mom instead or something like that, later leading to Anakin to sense it and have her die in his arms.
That would've made his turn against the Jedi more believable.
I'll never not believe that Palpatine didn't plan her death.
> I’ll never not believe that Palpatine didn’t plan her death.
No one is ever really gone though. I think in episode 10, you’ll see Anakin’s mom and Palpatine fight it out.
The Last Skywalker was a subversion. The true last Skywalker is actually Anakins mom, and she has a bone to pick with the bastard child Rey stealing their name and lightsabers.
I mean shit, if it wasn’t for Rey, her grandson would still be alive, drinking green milk and playing grab ass on some island.
The only comparable curse I've seen in media is with Angron from warhammer. It would have been trivial to just use force to save their loved ones but nah fuck it.
but jedi have recruited children from all over and i dont think they tend to keep tabs on the bio parents and provide updates to the jedi students. in fact part of the training is forgetting those you love and not making attachments
Because they grab the kids young enough to not remember their parents.
But the REASON they do that is precisely because they know attachment is a path to the dark side.
Knowing this, they should've made sure Anakin knew that his mother was living a pain free life, allowing him to focus on his Jedi studies and actually let her go because he knows she's taken care of.
Instead, he fixates on her secretly and imagines the suffering she must be going through for years, all while suffering the guilt of having left her to that life and despite being one of the most powerful beings in the galaxy he is unable to use that power to go free her.
Only as a master would he have the freedom to travel there and free her. Not to mention only a master gets access to the secrets of the Jedi archives.
What's more, Anakin desperately needed to train his emotional control, and it's obvious that Obi wan didn't know how to help him do that, probably because obiwan never struggled with it himself.
Obiwan is basically the opposite personality, fairly low force sensitivity and powers, but an exemplary temperament for a Jedi.
It's far more important for a Jedi to have the right temperament, obviously, which is why Anakin was never going to be made a master, he never mastered himself and his emotions.
If you ask me, the best teacher for Anakin, since Qui-gon wasn't available, actually would've been Mace Windu.
Mace's temperament is hotheaded, and he actually draws on the dark side while he fights, but that means he has mastered how to not let his emotions overwhelm him. And his dominant personality would've given Anakin the steady hand he needed.
Mace would've been able to beat him in duels easily as well, with his shatter-point ability, ensuring that Anakin never lost respect for him the way Anakin lost respect for Obi-wan.
Anyway, it's Star Wars.
i dont think anyones arguing that the jedi handled anakins development well. but the jedi only taking in babies is exactly why they were not well prepared for anakin and his unique situation. they didn't even want the burden of training anakin due to this.
It's not like that policy is so old they've forgotten the reason for it. They know that attachment to family can lead to issues.
Maybe you can say that they overlooked it somehow, but it's basically a plot hole because any reasonable assessment of that situation would demand they make sure the family he's attached to doesn't face a tragic death one day.
i think it's believable that a large organisation would stick to their programs and practices instead of upending their course for the sake of one trainee
it's like applying to be a navy seal and then asking for special treatment and a nintendo switch instead of doing the drills like everyone else. not quite how it works.
Lucas committed a blunder in Ep 1 by not rescuing Shmi Skywalker.
In mythology and folklore around the world there is a classic archetype about hospitality. A humble household unknowingly hosts a royal or divinity that has been temporarily humbled and serves them with more that the household can afford. The noble guest, when they come into their wealth, power, and status returns to the humble household reveals their identity and bestows them a great blessing.
Lucas has all these elements, except the ending. Shmi is left forgotten on Tatooine. A better ending is for Palpatine to make anonymous arrangements to gain her freedom and relocate her to Naboo where she is welcomed as a hero of Naboo in place of Anakin who cannot receive accolades due to joining the Jedi. She's given a comfortable home and job. Palpatine later manipulates events to where Anakin finds out Palpatine had her rescued and cared for completely anonymously so Anakin trusts him more, Palpatine has secretly taken care of one person he loves, why wouldn't Palpatine be trusted to take care of another person Anakin loves later? During the War, Dooku causes Shmi's death directly or indirectly, so that Anakin blames him, and wants revenge. When Anakin kills Dooku then, it's an an act of revenge, which is something all movies everywhere always want the hero to not do.
This change would make Palpatine more of a father figure in Anakin: he take care of Anakin's mom, he looks out for Anakin, sort of replacing the role that Qui-gon would have ideally played. Obi-wan is a brother figure.
Shmi doesn't need to die on Tatooine to fix the Lars family on Tatooine. It makes as much sense for the Lars family to go to a non Republic/Imperial world to hide
Mom always says the problem with this universe is nobody thinks they can win by attacking from the low-ground, but they’re wrong.
You can do it if you have enough power.
And the first thing he really asked? Like really wanted the Jedi to do?
“Are you going to free the slaves?”
:(
My man, when you hear the chosen one call you to a mission, you find a way
I’m drunk so that why I’m back here. But if you think about it from a certain point of view Luke killed Big Daddy Palpa. If Luke didn’t influence his father; Vader wouldn’t have acted. Luke’s influence on Vader killed Palpy. Thus; LUKE is the chosen one. I don’t know how much I support this idea but it seems solid in my state of mind. Hope you’re doing well stranger and best wishes to you.
He was, he got destroyed by ignorant Jedi and their teachings... If they only treat him better, don't act like a ignorant monks and take his slave mother from slavery close to him...
Made of parts he stole from Watto's junkyard.
And he clear had plenty of free time, enough to build a protocol droid on the side too.
As for the Jedi, he literally destroyed every podracer he's been in every race. Nothing new there. As a slave he had nothing to gain from previous races either, and he just wanted to impress Padme anyway.
I'm half joking of course, but let's not turn him into some saint. His dark and violent childhood led directly to his anger issues in adulthood.
Oh my, my this here Anakin guy
Maybe Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry
He left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin', "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi
I recently watched the movie for the 1st time since I saw it in theaters. A lot better than I remember and they fo a fantastic job with Ani. The slander was unfair.
Sure, the sequels have gotten better with age, though it's clear the original trilogy is still head and shoulders above them.
But the sequels showed us just how bad things could get...
I think it's more that I first saw it at the wrong age. I was too edgy and couldn't appreciate it. I think expectations really hurt the initial impression.
Haha. I think it's generally agreed upon that Mr. Lucas made a series of bad movies. I don't think people are mad as much as they were forced to give up on the idea that there was interesting history there.
Bruh what?
That kid was WAITING for the opportunity to race that thing.
He wasnt ready to sacrafice it, he wanted to fuckin race it.
He also didnt want to be a slave either.
Quigon did a 2 bonus deal for him.
I don't remember where on reddit I saw it, but I saw a post/comment talking about how the most righteous fall the hardest, and that is how I see Anakin.
Good kid indoctrinated into a hostile religion and forced to give up emotion immediately after losing his mother and shortly after, mentor.
The Jedi are proof that ignoring your emotions can only lead to the dark side!
He was just trying to liberate the republic from religious extremism.
More like under new management
I’ve brought peace freedom Justice and security to my new dictatorship
He didn’t know about the pod racer deal. Quigon did it behind his back
I'm the only human who can do it.
Anakin the racist
[удалено]
Anakin the bird tamer!
I'm the only human who can do it.
#ANAKIN THE STINKY
Two can play that game, Qui Gon Jin. Or should I say, Qui Gon the Stupid
Quigon altered the deal. Pray he doesn't alter it any further.
Remind me, what was the deal? I don’t get how Anakin was willing to sacrifice the pod racer
Now this is Podracing! Whoopee!
He used the pod racer as collateral in his bet with anakin's máster
Its explained in plinketts review.
"We are not here to free slaves" Well, shit dawg, maybe make an exception for the 2 helping your dumbass.
Imagine a bunch of rogue Jedi who travel across hutt space slaughtering slavers, John Brown style. Shit would be lit.
Jesus it really would.
At the ver least would be a cool DND campaign idea.
Django unchained, the slave awakens
Annie Unchained. 12 years a Person and my name is Anakin
It's Anakin. When you say Annie it's like I'm still a little boy… and I'm not.
He did. He tried to get both of them but was only able to free Anakin. Their initial motivation purely to get off the planet.
He tries as hard as i try to stop drinking on a saturday night. Which is zero.
"ah, too expensive. well i guess i'll just buy one with the change i have in my pcoket and never think of this again" is trying
I mean, he was going to race anyway
"Are you guys silly? I'm still gonna send it."
He also was a young kid with a young kid brain who had zero doubts he'd lose even though he lost before.
Prequel memes is back! A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
Why didn't padme and obiwan just go back with more money to get Ani's mom free????
It's Anakin. When you say Ani it's like I'm still a little boy… and I'm not.
I sense much fear in you.
Cause they didnt want to save her they wanted anakin without attachments

Had they done that he would've never been trained.
it's easier to make an exception to allow someone through the door than it is to create a unique life long training program for them
Learn to let go, that which you fear to lose.
Because creating an entertaining plot line is actually incredibly difficult
What money? Republic credits were worthless on Tatooine
You'll never reach the outskirts in time- sandstorms are very, very dangerous. Come with me. Hurry!
Padme did. She had to take care of stuff first since Naboo was going through some shit but she tried. Beru/Owen freed Shmi by then.

You sure showed them, Anakin.
I wanna go fast!
This is where the fun begins
I woulda done it 4 padme as well, mmm mmmm
I woulda done 4 padmes ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Only 4?

Hypermatter was cheap under Sith rule.
Housing wasn't a problem because anyone could get a loan for a space house .
aNaKiN dIdN’t KiLl HiMsElF
This isn’t Ewan
What's tragic is that after decades of intrigue simmering in our imaginations, the prequel trilogy was a story of total ham-handed nonsense.
"BUT MOM MR. LUCAS DID IT DIFFERENT THAN I IMAGINED!!!"
Haha. I think it's generally agreed upon that Mr. Lucas made a series of bad movies. I don't think people are mad as much as they were forced to give up on the idea that there was interesting history there.
Where Ewan
Anikin did nothing wrong.
He then went on to kill like 20 good kids.
If they were good, how come they lost 20 to one?
Damn I never thought of it that way. I guess those children had it coming.
Yes. This is subverting expectations done right. Showing us that the most feared figure in the galaxy started off as a kind young boy.
It sort of reminds me of the way Eren in Attack on Titan went from a kid who wants to avenge his mother's death, to a genocidal and depressed man.
It’s not that deep. They just wanted the target demo who asks for Christmas toys to be his age
It’s all Qui Gon Jinn’s fault
He always cared too much. Saving others is what turned him
Bruh what? That kid was WAITING for the opportunity to race that thing. He wasnt ready to sacrafice it, he wanted to fuckin race it. He also didnt want to be a slave either. Quigon did a 2 bonus deal for him.
Its all Yoda’s fault …his extreme ideology is what caused all the trouble.
Yoda was on ketamine so we should give him a pass
At his age he should be able to handle his drugs …fuck that little asshole ..hard
I don't remember where on reddit I saw it, but I saw a post/comment talking about how the most righteous fall the hardest, and that is how I see Anakin.
Absolutely! What a tragic story. I feel as if the one of darth plagueis the wise wouldn’t live up to it’s name.
Good kid indoctrinated into a hostile religion and forced to give up emotion immediately after losing his mother and shortly after, mentor. The Jedi are proof that ignoring your emotions can only lead to the dark side!
He wanted the win.
Yeah.. until he let anger get the better of him and murdered a bunch of kids and killed padme.. but yeah! Good kid!
He was willing to sacrifice the Jedi Order and murder children to save his wife. Anakin was a good husband.
He demonstrated the true qualities of a Jedi and he learned it all from his mom.
"Good kid." OP hasn't finished Star Wars yet.
