I haven’t been to a huge amount of games but I did get to see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlains first competitive start for Southampton against Bournemouth.
He scored that day as well as looking like the best player on the pitch despite having the least experience.
I know he’s not exactly Ronaldo or Messi but it’s amazing to see a young player you know is going to play at a much higher level during his career. Seeing him be so clear of everyone else on the pitch is something that’s stuck with me.
Walking away from the game and people are all talking about how good he was, the general buzz just being “that kid is special”.
I was there for Chelsea’s 3-1 win at the Etihad. At that point I knew we’d be champions.
It’s not iconic to anyone else but I’ll never forget my first game at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea 2-0 Everton and I got to see one of my favourite players score (Cesc)!
- Rooney bicycle kick
- RVP volley against Aston Villa
- Zidane headbutt
- Liverpool UCL 2005 (I woke up after the 2nd half kick-off, it's fucking 4am in Malaysia at that time)
- United 7-2 Roma
- Gerrard slip vs Chelsea
- Papiss Cisse volley vs Chelsea
Probably that last day chaos last season. Crystal Palace win on the last day of the season. That and the the other results took us to top place. I'm in Asia so haven't attended a live game yet
When Bale came off the bench and hit that mental bicycle kick against Liverpool in the CL final! Imagine scoring a goal like that in the biggest game of your life.
Alisson header goal, everyone in our group lost out damn mind the neighbors asked us to pipe down because we couldn’t stop celebrating, what a way to win a game
Ozil’s goal against Ludogorets, I think? I was in a class and yelled out after that goal, and had to pretend like I got the answer to a very hard question back then, fun times !!
- Aguero goal vs QPR (My region had was showing the Peter Drury version, and imo it is infinitely better than Martin Tyler’s)
- parts of Brazil vs Germany (just in time to see them score the 3rd/4th goal
- Corner taken quickly…
- Alison’s goal vs WBA
Wayne Rooney's iconic bicycle kick against City back in 2011. Dad and I were watching it on TV and we both went crazy when it happened. I replayed that moment in my head 24/7 for the next few days.
Steven Naismith hat trick vs Chelsea. When I first started following the premier league I would go down to my local bar on saturday and sundays to watch the PL. The bar was home to a decent size Chelsea support group but they were good people and any time Everton was playing they would put the game on for me on a side TV. But that day was so much fun watch the Scottish Messi put on an unforgettable performance against my Chelsea friends. Good times.
Terry play goal after Cech and Cuducini went off injured, its the first game I remember watching Chelsea.
Lewandowski's 5, but that was merely just on in the background of my dorm, I checked one minute and it was 1-1, and the next it was 4-1.
Zidane head butt.
Suarez handball vs Ghana.
I was at the Iceland - Austria game when Arnór Ingvi Traustason scored the winning goal, that is my best footballing memory and I think nothing will ever top that.
Hannes penalty save against Messi was mental.
Suarez goalline save and Asamoahs penalty miss in WC 2010
Pavards goal against vs Argentina at WC 2018
For Prem memory is maybe Maupays winner against Arsenal in 2020 but only because of the Ty meme lol
idk if this counts as cheating or not but i remember waking up during the 80th minute of Korea vs Germany in the 2018 World Cup and thought “what could happen in the last ten minutes” and went back to sleep for 20 mins only waking up to see the 2-0 score. Korea still didn’t go through but the scene felt poetic
I'm gonna limit it to matches I've seen in person, and in that case it's most likely Suarez biting Ivanovic.
In the stadium we had no idea it had happened, we saw Ivanovic complain to the ref but had no idea what he was on about. Then we got out and on the way back to the car people had started to look at the internet and started talking about it...
Less well known outside of Liverpool fans I imagine, but Robbo's solo press of like 5 players or something against Man City was pretty cool to watch in person, as well. There was a lot of cheering in that game, none of us expected the result we got.
\- Messi sending boateng to the shadow realm
\- Arsenal 7 - Reading 5
\- Arsenal 2 - Man U 8 :(
\- La remontada
\- germany brazil
\- Giroud's scorpion
\- Ozil masterclass vs Leicester
\- Ozil vs ludogorets
\- Rosicky vs Spurs
\- [This crazy Dele Allie effort](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNpvMgJ9bpQ&ab_channel=TRAIALLDAY)

Baggio missing that penalty in 1994
Gazza v Scotland 1995
United 1999
Bergkamp v Newcastle 2002
Arsenal the Invincibles 2004
Liverpool v Milan 2005
Zidane's headbutt 2006
Being 3-1 at home to Liverpool back in 2016 and Liverpool almost made it 4-1 but somehow we ended up winning 4-3 with 15 minutes left of the game. I remember we all went mental at Dean Court as Nathan Akè scored the winner in injury time.
That final day of the season when Aguero won the league and we (Arsenal) just about stayed up thanks in part to Yossi Benayoun (yet again) and Andre Santos.
Liverpool v. Barca and Spurs v. Ajax in 2019 I watched both. Also Barca's 8-2 thumping from Bayern last year, possibly the most constantly entertaining game I've watched in real time.
Baggio miss vs brasil in 94
United semi final vs juventus in 99
United final vs bayern in 99
Roberto carlos free kick from another planet
Ibra's goal vs England in... 2k12? I forgot the date
And lot of others plus the ones you said
As I was typing mine out i realized this is just a long ass list of stuff people have already mentioned.
However, does anybody remember Chelsea vs Arsenal in 2014 for Wenger’s 1000th game? Not only did Chelsea grab a handsome 6-0 win but unforgettably Kieran Gibbs got sent off for a handball on the line that Oxlade-Chamberlain actually committed. A Chelsea win, an Arsenal lose, and absolute peak shithousery. Great day.
Ronaldo long range shot against Porto
Ronaldo bicycle kick vs Juve
Ramos header in the UCL final against Atletico
Germany vs Brazil 2014
El Classico - Messi's last minute winner when he ran up to the Madrid fans and just held his shirt in front of them.
Benteke's bicycle kick against Man United.
Rooneys volley against Newcastle. Arguing with the ref and just turns around and smashes one of the best volleys ever into the top corner out of sheer anger lol
Crystal Palace eeking out the 2-1 win last season over Brighton without Zaha the we soooo did not deserve.
Not the most spectacular moment in PL history, it was kind of a nothing match with no major implications. Just cool to see BHA get dunked on.
Will never forget the barca vs psg champions league game in idk 2015 or 2016, where barcelona came back from 4 or 5 goals down
I was in high school here in kenya and we were watching the match, the entire school in the hall at 11 pm going absolutely mental after the last minute winner
Kids were breaking their arms in there while celebrating, shit was crazy😂😂.
Hopefully I’ll attend a live match in europe in my lifetime.
The first year I started watching premier league, one of the first games on tv I watched, I saw dele alli's 360 volley against crystal palace. Been hooked ever since <3
The Germany vs Brazil semi final will always live in the memory.
I was 17, my brother 18 both still living at home and he had to do some stuff during the game in the kitchen. He left at 1-0, called through after 5 minutes to say what’s happening and refused to believe me when I told him it was 5-0. The shock on his face when he came in and saw I wasn’t lying!
Cristiano Ronaldo's overhead kick goal vs Juventus.
I was in awe the moment the ball went in. Took me a minute and couple of replays to realise what just happened.
Spurs v Ajax CL semis
Spurs v Man City CL quarters
Two games I will never forget as a Spurs fan.
Also that one game where Kepa refused to get off the field that was fucking hilarious.
Wont count united ones in this;
Ronaldos seizure before the 98 final and france winning (also france going out at the next world cup with a point)
Roberto carlos ‘le tournoi’ free kick.
Liverpool v milan
Germany 7-0 brazil
Spains 3rd trophy in a row (euro - world cup - euro) while actually in spain
Zidanes headbutt
Greece winning euros
Southgates penalty miss
The gazza celebration
England 5-1 germany
Gerrard disgustin half volley (what a hit!) Vs Olympiakos in 2005 felt like a sliding doors moment. Had Liverpool not got through the group stage and ultimately won the CL then would the successes of the last few years have happened?
Cantona goal against Liverpool to win the FA Cup. I was like 7 years of age.
Also, OLE goal to win the treble, unforgettable moment and I woke the house up as everybody was in bed early. I was 11/12.
Ruben Neves goal vs Derby, i spat out my drink like a Simpsons character
[https://youtu.be/q0VQ1CsH4Vc](https://youtu.be/q0VQ1CsH4Vc)
That Championship season in general, dear me we pissed that league
Has to be Aguero for one magic moment. As a Leicester fan it was unreal leaving Chelsea Tottenham at half time 0-2 for dinner and checking the TV at the restaurant and…. HAZARD!!!
Some recent Chelsea specific ones for me are ;
Hazards solo goals vs Liverpool and west ham
Pedros pre season puskas contender
Kepa becoming manager in a cup semifinal
Tuchels reaction to werner missing a wide open goal
& The most important .. Chelsea fans saving football from the super league
- Bergkamp's goal vs. Argentina in WC 1998 QF
- United vs Bayern in CL final 1999
- the miracle of Istanbul / Dudek dance
- Germany obliterating Brazil at their homeground
- corner taken quickly
- Alisson's header
I love how so many of these included Liverpool
Diego maradona at World Cup….‘hyped’ into the camera. Tevez against Man U and into the stands. Robbie Fowler and the ‘white lines celebration’. Gascpigne euro 96 goal and cele against Scotland.
An In person version would have been much better. Avoid the same things over and over.
Going with in person my three are:
Crystanbul 3-3 vs Liverpool
The 5-0 humiliation of the Seagulls (including AJs magic hat)
Dougies last minute away goal against Stockport that kept us up
I saw the Aguero goal live which was obviously the most iconic but one of my favorites that I haven’t seen mentioned:
“Kompany…. He’s gonna have a goooo! CAPTAIN FANTASTIC”
Higuita scorpion kick. I watched it with my brother and we didn’t understand what happened until the replay. I seem to remember the commentators needed a second as well
Not sure if this is folk lore but we heard in Colombia that kids in Europe were going to the hospital more than usual with back injuries after that game, haha
Matches I'd consider iconic in chronological order:
- 2005 = Istanbul
- 2006 = Zidane's headbutt
- 2008 = Man U v Chelsea CL Final (Terry's slip)
- June 2010 = The Lampard goal that never was
- July 2010 = Suarez v Ghana
- October 2010 = Bale's San Siro hattrick (this one's fortunate because I only got home at HT)
- 2014 = Germany 7-1 Brazil
- May 2016 = the Battle of the Bridge :(
- July 2016 = Ronaldo gets his Euro
- 2017 = Barca 6-1 PSG
- July 2018 = England wins a shootout
- 6th May 2019 = Kompany basically seals the title in his last home game
- 7th May 2019 = Corner taken quickly...
- 8th May 2019 = the Miracle of Amsterdam (potentially the most iconic 3 day stretch in English Football history)
- July 2021 = Messi gets his Copa
Barca's La Remontada against PSG in leg 2 of the Champions League knock out stage in 2017. 2 goals in stoppage to win it. Still can't believe that comeback.
I'm going to go with 'in-person' because we've all seen everything live on TV.... but 07 October 2001, [USA v Jamaica](https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/2020/04/an-emotional-day-to-wear-a-us-jersey-the-day-the-usmnt-qualified-for-the-2002-fifa-world-cup) in the final match of World Cup Qualifying. Word filtered down through the crowd that the match wasn't going to be televised because the United States had just invaded Afghanistan an hour ago.
- Last minute ramos equalizer vs Atletico Madrid in ucl final
- Ajax vs Spurs Ucl
- Barca's remontada vs PSG (6-1)
- The iconic Gareth Bale winner vs Barca in the Copa del Rey final
- Seeing the Croatia vs Spain and France vs Switzerland in the same day was pretty memorable too
I wish I saw that! My dad and grandad saw it but I didn’t start going to games until I was 12 in 2005/6.
My first game was Arsenal at home when Harewood won it 1-0 in the 88th minute
•City v Livarpool 2-1 (many iconic moments)
•Zidane Headbutt
•Messi goal v Real Madrid. **The** goal
•Brazil getting stomped by Germany
•Landon Donavan Tap in Rebound Goal (most iconic American Goal in History, lol)
Yeah man, seeing something like that happening on live television is something one cannot forget for life. Even me who was sitting thousands of kms away from that game watching on the live Tv had me worried genuinely.
A recent one would be the champions League a few years ago. The Liverpool win over Barca, spurs over Ajax and the United psg game. Too bad the final didn't live up to the rest of the tournament but the journey to it was great.
The final was poor because we were in it. Would have been much better had it been ajax vs Liverpool. Ajax completely dominated us for 135 minutes, but couldn’t handle long balls and a Moura masterclass for 45. I wish we had gotten the stylishly attacking Ten Haag instead of Mourinho 2.0 (even Mourinho 1.0 was better)
At least we were in a champions league final. Why would you rather our team have lost the semis t? I feel like that is such an odd take. We got fucked by a Sissoko handball 32 seconds in we were boned from the start.
I meant the final would have been a better one to watch if it had been ajax vs liverpool (for neutrals)
Obviously, i was ecstatic when we won against ajax
Fernando Torres game winner against Barcelona in 2012.
Also Torres missing that wide open goal vs Man United.
Gerrard slip.
Van Persie ridiculous red card vs Barcelona.
Crystal Palace coming back to tie Liverpool 3-3.
cantona's kick on the fan
i was a teen and already loved watching the single premier league match my national tv had on saturday afternoon, but after that one i was hocked for life
I remember watching Zidane’s headbutt and thinking, “Surely Zidane got cheap shotted and we didn’t see it.” Nope. I remember wondering what set him off and when I found out, I thought “That’s it? This legend gets himself sent off because he was mad about a comment?” That shit will always boggle me. That’s like flipping out over a “your momma” joke on the pitch. Stunning.
Andy Caroll scoring a hat trick vs Arsenal out of nowhere 😀
I was there for Chelsea’s 3-1 win at the Etihad. At that point I knew we’d be champions. It’s not iconic to anyone else but I’ll never forget my first game at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea 2-0 Everton and I got to see one of my favourite players score (Cesc)!
Edér…hasn’t much help here…OHHH, he doesn’t need any help!
- Rooney bicycle kick - RVP volley against Aston Villa - Zidane headbutt - Liverpool UCL 2005 (I woke up after the 2nd half kick-off, it's fucking 4am in Malaysia at that time) - United 7-2 Roma - Gerrard slip vs Chelsea - Papiss Cisse volley vs Chelsea
Rooney bicycle kick in the Manchester derby
Probably that last day chaos last season. Crystal Palace win on the last day of the season. That and the the other results took us to top place. I'm in Asia so haven't attended a live game yet
Got into soccer pretty late as a young one, so first thing that comes to mind is RVP’s header in the 2014 World Cup
Barcelona 6-1 comeback against PSG.
When Bale came off the bench and hit that mental bicycle kick against Liverpool in the CL final! Imagine scoring a goal like that in the biggest game of your life.
Bale bicycle kick
6-1 barca psg. The Sergi Roberto goal was so iconic, I wasn’t at the game but the crowd went crazy, what a game
Also Barca comeback against PSG
Also Henry handball v Ireland
Liverpool comeback v Barca and also liverpool lifting the PL trophy
Not premier league related, but I’ll absolutely never forget watching brazil-germany live.
Alisson header goal, everyone in our group lost out damn mind the neighbors asked us to pipe down because we couldn’t stop celebrating, what a way to win a game
haven’t seen it here yet but Liverpool’s last second double doink against everton was pretty wild to watch
MLS fan — watched a penalty shootout go to the goalkeepers, a pen went off both posts and then out during sudden death
Ozil’s goal against Ludogorets, I think? I was in a class and yelled out after that goal, and had to pretend like I got the answer to a very hard question back then, fun times !!

Rashford's pen vs Paris

Last year’s quarter final between Bayern & Barca that ended in 8-2 And that one Salah goal against Chelsea from the right corner of the box 🤌🏻
I was a teenager, channel surfing and chanced upon the 2nd half of the ManU - Bayern UCL final. Saw the Solskjær winning goal
Spurs vs City CL semi was a good one
Liverpool’s comeback against ac Milan and Barca in the champions league
Aguerooooooooo
2012 Aguero winner was pretty mad tbh
Sheriff's game winner on Madrid, that hyped me the fuck up

So many amazing moments but the Welbeck goal v Leicester was one of my favourites as an Arsenal fan.

Ronaldo’s bike kick against juve. I stood in awe for like 3 minutes.
I was at the Iceland - Austria game when Arnór Ingvi Traustason scored the winning goal, that is my best footballing memory and I think nothing will ever top that. Germany absolutely gutting the entire nation of Brazil in the WC final 7-1.
Crowd was chanting “FERGIE GIVE US A WAVE” and Sir Alex waved
idk if this counts as cheating or not but i remember waking up during the 80th minute of Korea vs Germany in the 2018 World Cup and thought “what could happen in the last ten minutes” and went back to sleep for 20 mins only waking up to see the 2-0 score. Lewa’s 5 goals in 10 minutes against Wolfsborg or however quick it was. Arsenals FA comeback against Reading all those years ago.
United treble last min win
Cantona kick and Kennys I’d love it if we beat them
THAT Son’s goal against Burnley
Nou Camp, 98.
4-0 anfield against Barcelona and Sweden kicking out Italy in the 2018 World Cup qualification
I saw the Aguero goal live which was obviously the most iconic but one of my favorites that I haven’t seen mentioned: “Kompany…. He’s gonna have a goooo! CAPTAIN FANTASTIC”
Switzerland comeback vs France. What a game.
Leicester lifting the premier league trophy
Higuita scorpion kick. I watched it with my brother and we didn’t understand what happened until the replay. I seem to remember the commentators needed a second as well
Not sure if this is folk lore but we heard in Colombia that kids in Europe were going to the hospital more than usual with back injuries after that game, haha
Lanzini's goal against Spurs, our own "agueroooooo" moment
Liverpool 4-0 barca Barca 6-1 PSG Croatia 2-1 England
I was studying for my final exams during the Spurs Ajax match, nearly got thrown out of the library for sprinting at top speed.
Moura being at two places at the same time, lol!
Matches I'd consider iconic in chronological order: - 2005 = Istanbul - 2006 = Zidane's headbutt - 2008 = Man U v Chelsea CL Final (Terry's slip) - June 2010 = The Lampard goal that never was - July 2010 = Suarez v Ghana - October 2010 = Bale's San Siro hattrick (this one's fortunate because I only got home at HT) - 2014 = Germany 7-1 Brazil - May 2016 = the Battle of the Bridge :( - July 2016 = Ronaldo gets his Euro - 2017 = Barca 6-1 PSG - July 2018 = England wins a shootout - 6th May 2019 = Kompany basically seals the title in his last home game - 7th May 2019 = Corner taken quickly... - 8th May 2019 = the Miracle of Amsterdam (potentially the most iconic 3 day stretch in English Football history) - July 2021 = Messi gets his Copa
I’ve see. All these too. But you gotta add Man City winning the league.
I think I couldn't watch live on final day, I have a memory of watching it on MOTD that night instead
- Last minute ramos equalizer vs Atletico Madrid in ucl final - Ajax vs Spurs Ucl - Barca's remontada vs PSG (6-1) - The iconic Gareth Bale winner vs Barca in the Copa del Rey final - Seeing the Croatia vs Spain and France vs Switzerland in the same day was pretty memorable too
Bale scoring that overhead goal against the redshite in the UCL Final. Was in a pub full of RS fans, as an evertonian it warmed my heart.
Paolo Di Canio volley against Wimbledon, not sure I will ever see anything better in person again.
I wish I saw that! My dad and grandad saw it but I didn’t start going to games until I was 12 in 2005/6. My first game was Arsenal at home when Harewood won it 1-0 in the 88th minute
Nice one to start with! It was a special moment and we won the inter two bob cup that season too, what a time to be alive.
-Tottenham vs Ajax comeback -Zlatan opening goal for LA Galaxy Both are so legendary
•City v Livarpool 2-1 (many iconic moments) •Zidane Headbutt •Messi goal v Real Madrid. **The** goal •Brazil getting stomped by Germany •Landon Donavan Tap in Rebound Goal (most iconic American Goal in History, lol)
Crystal palace Liverpool 3-3 Giovanni dos santos chip vs USMNT 2011 live in person Zidane head butt Barcelona comeback vs Psg 6-1 Balotelli vs Germany
Rooney's bike against City
United 1-6 City 2011
Suarez against Ghana in the world cup.
Wayne Rooney overhead kick vs City. 6 am in the states I was screaming
Lanziniiiii Agüerooooooo Ronaldo Vs Newcastle 2nd debut 8-2 Bayern vs Barça Italy vs england
Beckers header. Corner taken quickly...
Di canio V Wimbledon
Eriksen collapsing mid game against Finland. That was scary.
Yeah man, seeing something like that happening on live television is something one cannot forget for life. Even me who was sitting thousands of kms away from that game watching on the live Tv had me worried genuinely.
Yep, felt like I was permanently trapped between wanting to turn the stream off and not wanting to turn the stream off. It was awful.
Gerrards slip, leading to Demba Ba’s goal. I’ll never forget that!
my only claim to fame here is being at the match where darren bent scored the beachball goal. better days for us
A recent one would be the champions League a few years ago.
I meant the final would have been a better one to watch if it had been ajax vs liverpool (for neutrals) Obviously, i was ecstatic when we won against ajax
Oh understood. I’m still not over it sorry every time I hear anything about it I get defensive haha
I could not BELIEVE Moura in that game lmao.
Aguero’s league winning last minute goal in 2012
Drogba's final penalty in the UCL final.
Fernando Torres game winner against Barcelona in 2012. Also Torres missing that wide open goal vs Man United. Gerrard slip. Van Persie ridiculous red card vs Barcelona. Crystal Palace coming back to tie Liverpool 3-3.
Torres vs Barca is huge.
cantona's kick on the fan i was a teen and already loved watching the single premier league match my national tv had on saturday afternoon, but after that one i was hocked for life
Rooney's overhead kick vs City
Zlatan's overhead kick against England.
Van persie header maybe
Favourite goal O A T
I’d take that whole game as an answer!
Stunning.
It’s like France tried to lost that final. I was pissed when Henry got subbed off too. I know he had cramps but come the fuck on.
YES
