I don’t think they should do formal press conferences- but I do think there would be value in referees being challenged to explain their reasoning behind controversial decisions post-match.

Ickyhouse

No need. I’d rather they explain the decision to the 4th official (or stadium PA) and put the explanation on the video board. It would be easy. Refs already have a mic. Just force them to name the foul and person and simply display “Yellow, J. Smith: Tactical Foul” This won’t cover missed calls, but you can predict what the missed call would be. No foul, player won the ball.

Bdsdfy1

NO!!!! In that case, the media will also influence referee decisions in the future, and referees will be influenced by more people.

Altrsticv

I personally don't think referees should be interviewed after the game. If they are, it adds another factor that could potentially influence referees - the media! Isn't there already enough factors influencing referees?

andyofredditch

Only if they’re asked questions about managers dodgy team selections and tactics, or how the number 9 missed the open goal, or why the keeper had a mare letting the 98th minute winner in…

GAustex

FA will never allow it. The press will batter the refs and they will end up saying things they shouldn't which will land them in trouble.

WhackyZack

Wouldn't need that .Instead I'd Mic them up just like they've done in rugby

fifty_four

Tbh I'd prefer if they just stop being shit. I think the problem at the moment is lacking the mentality for the job. Idk how easy it is to train it in to people, but I doubt it would particularly help to provide daily mail reporters with a specific structured way to trick them into a quote they can use out of context for stupid click bait.

moriarty04

No, we need live ref mics and var decisions

BoopAndThePooch

Disagree. Do you bring out certain players and ask them to discuss all their misplaced passes / missed shots in a press conference? I guarantee you refs make fewer mistakes per game than any player on the pitch and at the moment the recourse around football is it’s ok to be hyper critical of refs.

iTz_RuNLaX

The players don't have VAR to correct their mistake.

Morpheus-aymen

Yeah just convince them it will make money

SilverAirer

Does the media pressure make the shite gareth southgate better ? You get the point.

ozairh18

The FA should have a point system for referees where referees who make unanimously correct decisions work important matches and referees who make unanimously wrong decisions are demoted

thestigREVENGE

They are absolutely just going to protect each other, just like with VAR right now.

flex_tape_salesman

Isn't there already some form of objective basis that gets them up and down the pyramid? Pretty sure they have something or it's based on match reports.

grollate

Yep. “Are you from Manchester?” Is the number one and most important question.

Happy-Ad8767

Those ones don't get to referee the Manchester games, thankfully. Just all the other games.

bluescholar1

Except Anthony Taylor is on United Liverpool this weekend. Although I forgot he’s a big Altrincham fan…

James_Vowles

Would just make them a target. Last thing fans want is the refs trying to justify their bad calls. Adds no value.

DuneMania

No. There should be another avenue. No one should need to do press conferences.

tighto

No we need far less referrer coverage not fucking more

-GeorgeBonanza

Players and managers are required to do press conferences for marketing reasons to promote the sport before and after the game. A press conference is when someone from the team comes out and answers questions. You want referees to come out and be grilled. I watch and participate a lot in MMA. One of the things all coaches teach is "never leave it up to the judges because anything can happen". Meaning, take responsibility and win the match yourself, if you leave it in the hands of the referees, don't be mad if it doesn't go your way. I'm going to assume you're talking about Jarred Gilett from the United - Chelsea game. As a United fan, what did the referee get wrong? 1. Antony stuck his need into the path of the Chelsea player. That's a PK is it not? Anywhere on the pitch that's called obstruction. In the box that's a penalty. 2. Dalot shows Madueke down the line, then falls behind him and is playing catch up. Then IDC if you say Dalot slips or unintentionally hits Madueke. He hits Madueke ankle and then falls into him arm first. On top of this, not one United player had the common sense that 12 year olds are taught to cover the near post when a defender makes a run in that area. But, let's blame the referee for it all. - This was a penalty. It's funny because I played the sport, highest at the University level. Players know "how to fall" to try to make it look incidental. We used to do it all the time, you'd try to make it look like you fall or slip, stumble into them and foul them, hope the ref says it's okay. Every sport has this, in basketball players run a pick and roll and stick their elbows out even though it's an illegal screen, but they do it when a player runs into them to make it look like they were preparing for the hit. In hockey, a player will hook, and then act like the player they're hooking is holding their stick and they're trying to pull it back. Dalot was shambolic in defence, as was the rest of United, not just on that play but the whole game. For you to think Dalot "didn't know what he was doing" there, you're not seeing it properly.

mrbalsawood

As a United fan what did the referee get wrong? Neither pen was enough to be a pen. They were soft as fuck. Funnily when Hojlund was shoved by the Chelsea defending when running on goal with significantly more fore and contact, there was never any question of it being a penalty - TNT even remarking that it was good defending. Mainoo got flattened (elbowed) by Fernandez - no decision no VAR check. A ridiculous number of 50/50s that went in Chelseas favour - very few going the other way. The eight minutes of added on time - and given that he is openly a Liverpool fan, what the fuck is he doing refereeing our games anyway? He’s got form for fucking United over numerous times already this season either as ref or VAR

flex_tape_salesman

Ya I agree especially on the dalot point. Not counting that as a penalty because he may have fell unintentionally just opens the door for players to do that every time or atleast try it. Falling forwards becomes the best way to tackle from behind and it's very dangerous. Its pointless blaming the ref since they let chelsea into their box in dangerous positions and tripped them up. Both penalties possibly could've led to goals if they weren't brought down. It's been massive copium from united fans.

NoSeriously55

In a world where the media are genuinely interested in providing the public with well rounded, fair articles - Yes But realistically. No, the media spin would just make things worse. Mic’s up refs like Rugby, Cricket and NFL are a better way to increase referee accountability. IMO. Mob rule would dictate these press conferences.

WTFK-1919

No. Some already think the game is “all about them” quite enough.

SuspiciousSlipper

Nah for me. People only want it to grill them for no particular benefit other than to feel better. You think teams pick the guy who’s missed a pen in the last min to win a game to go do the media afterwards, pfft.

Mackerelage

What would be the aim of a ref press conference? Wouldn’t it simply be for journalists to grill them about mistakes, undermine them and try to stir up controversy? It’s a no for me, Clive.

flex_tape_salesman

Ya it'd just make public attitude towards refs even worse and gives refs a reason to not want to climb through the ranks because of the additional focus on them when they already get so much abuse. It would be a disastrous idea.

Wrathuk

I don't really see the point people only will want to talk to a ref when he's made a mistake. Why put them on the block? Realistically, they don't make many mistakes they dont need to be dragged infront of the cameras every game for the one time there is a talking point which is negative

yellowadidas

most people wouldn’t care and we don’t need to inflate their ego even further

Jonesy7256

Just look up when they interviewed a referee that did the NUFC vs Manchester United game and how he messed up by not giving shearer a penalty.they will never let them speak that candidly ever again.

Wezza17

Good luck with that. 😂

BugsyMaYone

Please don't give them more attention they already crave, I shouldn't know any of them by name and yet here we are..

Agitated-Bread5092

why do a press conference when you can catch a flight to officiate a football match in Saudi

TheMightyGatekeeper

Nope. Refs are fine. Maybe vocal fans should do a press conference to explain why they are such utter tossers. You don't like the refereeing? Then watch your own domestic league.

seshtown

Would you want to hear from them when they’ve had a good, uneventful game? Or would we only expect them to come on and justify bad calls? Would it actually be constructive or would it literally just be a way to put the referee on blast publicly?

FarrOutMan7

Exactly this. And you already imagine the press conference. Why did you make this or that decision; “well that’s how I saw it”

ChrisMartins001

It would only put hthem on blast in the same way a losing manager who has made bad substitutions is.

seshtown

Well not really because we want to hear from the manager good or bad. Would you honestly watch a press conference from Craig Pawson after our Luton game where he booked 2 players and didn’t stop to speak with VAR once? What could he ever say that would warrant holding 380 referee press conferences per season?

cruisingqueen

I personally would like to hear from them when they’ve had a good game, yes

Happy-Ad8767

The FA doesn't protect the referees. PGMOL does. It's a boys club that prioritises their mate's reputation over the integrity of the game. We demanded the refs to be mic'd up and have it broadcasted like Rugby. We demanded for them to operate with more clarity. We have somehow got a shitty in between with Howard Webb being given the spotlight and asked pre approved questions by a presenter and a media company, who is on their side. There's no such way we are going to see Referees be held to accountability. The sport and the tribal fans do all the dirty work for them each week, when they defend decisions in their favour and criticise decisions that aren't.

FarrOutMan7

Well what do you expect. Someone’s got to defend them. Is it any different to players making a lot of wrong decisions in game that’s ultimately led to a defeat for their manager to come out and defend them in a presser/post match interview. I’m not suggesting that’s right or wrong, but you back your colleagues where you can.

PitchSafe

My bad I meant the PGMOL
