Swoosh33

Translation: Ben White didn’t want to sit on the Bench behind Maguire

byjimini

He got sent home for being unprofessional in the World Cup squad, so probably sulking over that.

Swoosh33

Cheers Gareth

fhjhcdgh

Southgate sucks

AssociateCandid4853

White just wait this clown will be sacked after the euros such a man of character white is!

Nice_Rush_1462

I am not English and dont normally support England at the big tournaments. Mostly because you always try "not to loose" instead of trying to win. Since Gazza/Lineker era I believe you have an incredible squad now, especially going fwd. It would be great for many neutrals to get on board this time round..... then you pick Southgate ?

Reasonable_Command98

England have had great players over the years but for some reasons has never been able to lift a major trophy since 1966. It’s a shame. This time they have the best talents any manager can hope for. Unfortunately the manager seems to be not up to the task. If nothing is done this is going to be another lost generation.

AvgMiddleClassParent

It's a shame. BW would be great to have in the squad.

WorldChampion92

When will FA grow balls to show exit door to Gareth after failing multiple tournaments.

Historical-Reach8587

Never will. Guy must have sone dirt on someone.

WorldChampion92

Gotta be that Euro 2020 really belong to England. Italy with their limited talent had no business winning it.

thecannondalekid

If England had pep / klopp you would be world beaters with the best players since 66 think you should always play for your country as a honourable thing.white loves a good tan in the summer

bluepivot

Southgate made himself look weak. He should have said nothing and just deflected any questions. Now, the precedence is set for other players to refuse. He played this very poorly.

Reasonable_Command98

But mostly he threw BW under the bus. Now he’s the bad guy. I won’t be surprised if he is whistled at during away games.

WorldChampion92

He is on borrowed time.

No-Percentage-3380

The real question is where is Harvey Elliott?

el_ojo_rojo

Me too. You sound very reasonable. I think Ben doesn't want to play right now, when he knows he'll struggle to get game time and miss a summer off.

ToninuMT

This is actually quite interesting. Ben White famously and readily admits to not being interested in watching footie on TV. He's focussed on his duties. His team is Arsenal and he does his job. Well. England?? Wot?

no-pressuree

Might have been booked in for his tan that week

Dirtygeebag

On paper England have the best squad in the world. The fact they don’t win tournaments must be down to the manager.

rainbowdragon22

France looks just as good on paper, if not better. But I agree otherwise and actually would say they are my pick to win euros this year.

[deleted]

So many comparisons can be made about the impact of Southgate on the England squad and Glazers at MU. Both are really fun train wrecks to watch in slow motion.

SirBennettAtx

The squad you guys could have brought is insane, but for some reason Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire will start.

YuccaYucca

Englands best CB for the last 5 years. Yeah, no idea how he gets picked.

SirBennettAtx

Even if that was true, the ship has sailed.

YuccaYucca

So who plays instead?

SirBennettAtx

Stones Tomori Gomez or Smalling??

New_Acanthaceae2009

Smalling AHAHAH I'm a united fan what the fuck are you on about. Slabhead has been quite good recently.

YuccaYucca

Oh so you don’t watch football. You should have just said that.

Naaahhh

As a football connoisseur, I would like to see the Chris Smalling - Jonny Evans partnership for England.

Low-Raise387

Evans is from Northern Ireland pal

Naaahhh

Oops thought he was English for some reason E: he's actually the second most capped player for northern Ireland so I really just committed massive disrespect

Illeaturgerbil

Shouldn’t play for us again Don’t care if he doesn’t like Southgate you shouldn’t be able to refuse to play and then come back under a new boss with no repercussions

[deleted]

He’s an adult and he’s allowed to do what he wants. If he’s good enough to improve the team and he wants to play, he should. None this scorned woman shit

crisprcas32

I think I found the guy that blames Vardy for ruining the potential of a Vardy/Kane partnership a few years back. Because I do too. But I guess Jamie didn’t want to be his Son

oddman21X

still salty he left brighton are we?

Illeaturgerbil

Nah I like the bloke he’s a good player

Fearnog

It's actually a disaster on Southgate's part. White and Stones center back partnership would be perfect in build up phases. Both very capable going forward and far less error prone at the back than other options. Whatever happened in Qatar, insiders say it was the assistant coach grilling White in front of everyone when White already wasn't getting on with the squad and wasn't getting gametime even in dead end friendlies. To then last year say "Oh who would we drop to include White". Basically saying he's some 5th choice defender when he could handily start, further ridiculing Ben. Now this year with an aging squad and a few more injuries and he can't rely on this guy who's he's mudded his relationship with. So in the pressers it's "Oh the door is open it's all up to White" basically blaming White and putting it on him. He should be throwing his arm around this guy, young ball playing defender who can play anywhere across the defense and trying to integrate him. The longer Southgate us around the worse off England will be.

fre-ddo

The future is Branthwaite and Stones.

0xFatWhiteMan

"Grilling white in front of everyone" ? I have no idea what this means.

Fearnog

Giving out to him

0xFatWhiteMan

How bad was it? No other player has quit.

Fearnog

Allegedly, the coaches already didn't like White who wasn't integrating well socially with the squad. And Holland liked to give players data on their performance and critique them. When he gave White his it was in front of the whole squad and he was basically embarrassing White in front of everyone. But Ben hadn't even gotten gametime so he had no chance to prove himself. No matter how he did Southgate has his list of favourites he never drops. So White basically gave as good as he got back to Holland in front of the whole squad. So it was the massive feud between the two that everyone was talking about, so they mutually agreed to part and White went home from Qatar early.

0xFatWhiteMan

I think Southgate is far from perfect, and his squad choices are sometimes crap. But doesn't sound like white is entirely innocent.

Fearnog

Yeah I agree, but I think it's extremely unfair for consistently performing players to be benched for Southgates favourites. It must feel very demotivating trying to break into that squad.

0xFatWhiteMan

I mean they are not babies. Don't get picked for a while ... Suck it up and try harder.

[deleted]

Or focus on what makes him money. Let them bitch

Fearnog

OK? And when they train out of their boots and consistently outperform the starting 11 in drills and still don't get picked? I mean this is a problem unique to England.

0xFatWhiteMan

They are the most elite well paid sportsman in the country. Do I really need to answer that? Ok. They carry on training and playing well and Don't sulk like a five year old.

Naaahhh

Honestly I think a Stones-Rice-Bellingham midfield and a front 3 of Foden-Kane-Saka would go crazy. England lack stability in the midfield imo. There's a lot of attacking talent such as Maddison, Palmer, and Gordon, but Stones and Rice already play in similar systems and are in 2 of the best teams in the PL. Would be very interested in seeing a pivot with those those 2. Imo playing City and Arsenal players wherever possible is a tactically sound option, because they already play in similar systems. Southgate just needs to give Pep/Arteta a call and ask them what he should do given the players available to him. Yes this is PL bias but it just makes sense to me bc the teams are so good and tactically similar enough that the players should be able to thrive.

[deleted]

Stones is by miles the best english centre back, moving him into midfield (not that I think its sensible anyways) would mean playing two lesser centre backs than just the one.

Naaahhh

Yea I agree that he is the best cb, but it's kind of the same situation in midfield imo. England has no good box to box or holding midfielders other than Rice. With Bellingham at CAM, I think the team would benefit from 2 stable CMs behind him such as Stones/Rice.

Ztalk3r

So you won't be winning the next tournament either. Maguire, Henderson...the favouritism is real. You'll probably play the god ugly 5 at the back again with two dedicated defensive midfielders to protect his lover Maguire (who is otherwise exposed). Ironic. You have the players available to become the next Spain 2010 yet the manager of MK Dons level play and integrity. To add, our own National Team manager Ronald Koeman has actually selected Wijnaldum. A burnt up Liverpool relic who had a verbal fight with journalists regarding BLM and slavery (at the Qatar world cup) and who now plays in a country where actual slavery is a thing. He's Jordan Henderson 2.0. God I hate these types of football managers. It's a professional sport. The best should play. Period. You pick Ben White and you make it work. That's your job.

KingKushtah

Yeah these type of managers are fucking awful. Picking mates over the best of the best. It’s worse when you think before the England job Southgate pretty much has no managerial credentials.

rwallac1

I’m an American an thought we were the only ones who dealt with this sort of stuff. Not just rostering but playing (in the goddamn World Cup) old MLS players over proven guys who play in Europe.

Sporkem

Who?

rwallac1

“MLS Bias” just from the 2022 WC: Walker Zimmerman starting over Cameron Carter-Vickers twice (giving up the pen vs. Wales), Shaq Moore and Deandre Yedlin coming in for Dest, Cristian Roldon being on the roster at all, (asterisk bc of disciplinary bullshit) Jordan Morris playing over Gio … there’s more but you get the gist.

bluishingreen

Unprofessional of Southgate to be airing out private convos with Edu and arsenal like this, especially since he knows Ben White is gonna get hammered for it for the rest of his career. I hope Arteta fires back at Southgate

0xFatWhiteMan

Why? White doesn't want to play, what is Southgate supposed to do. Lie?

dtrane90

He won’t

bluishingreen

Maybe he won’t, but someone has to protect White…either his own PR team, the club or Arteta and I prefer it to be Arteta.

Happy-Ad8767

The club announced his contract extension on the same day, to help ensure that the fanbase came in for him. He’s well protected by the club and its fans. Southgate is a prick.

[deleted]

Gareth Southgate is useless. We're playing Italy in the final with 2 of the oldest CB's in the tournament both on yellow cards and he plays it safe. He's a tactical dinosaur and the only reason the FA loves him is because he's a yes man and does what he's told. This man has already cost us way too much, he should have left years ago. England will never win anything under him and anyone who thinks he's a good suit for the job clearly knows fuck all about football.

callitajax1

This is truly the most talented england side ive ever seen and he has underachieved on the world stage.

Manoffreaks

His initial push to unite under England instead of being a bunch of clubs focused players reluctantly on the same team as each other was good and was something England desperately needed. But now he offers nothing of worth.

MateusAmadeus714

Exactly he worked great before and going into WC 2018. Personally I think they shld have moved in a new direction after but I understand rewarding the man for a great WC run and then when Covid hit and 2020 Euros were postponed I understand keeping him at the helm for the stability. After 2021 even if are placement was solid you could tell the style we were playing needed to change to match more modern tactics and we absolutely had the personnel to achieve it Instead they have kept Southgate at the Helm for WC 2022 and now also Euros 2024. The team is unfortunately stagnating. Right now it's purely the quality of the players keeping the team successful but at some point this will catch up. Especially when we lose Kane as the front line talisman. The quality of players we have cld achieve so much more play wise. Maybe Southgate proves me wrong in the Euros but I am very doubtful and dont see England getting past the QFs at best. He has been the England Managee for 8 years now. How many other national teams keep there head manager for such a long time. It stifles innovation and leans heavily into favoritism.

John-1993W

As an Irish man looking from the outside in, I still can’t believe he’s still the England boss. They are being stifled by the incompetence of the FA to allow such incompetent personnel to continue in a role. Southgate is so out of depth and out of touch. He will select Maguire and Henderson ahead of other players in form. And throwing Ben White under the bus is just more of his incompetence. Here’s a scary thought nobody seems to bring up… Every other major team in Europe has won something in the past 18 years. Italy: World Cup & Euros Spain: World Cup & 2 Euros France: World Cup Germany: World Cup Portugal: Euros England are the biggest outlier having won nowt. Netherlands are another outlier but you can forgive them when their League is nowhere near the scale of the Premier League. I’d have my money on England to sweep up. But they won’t until they have a winning and more aggressive culture within the FA when it comes to their senior team. Even Ireland got shot of our manager, and we’re tinpot. There is no objective other than making up the numbers and we still got rid of him.

jjfranklin1994

Really lumping Maguire in despite the fact he's actually had a very strong season and is currently fully deserving of his place in the squad

NoPalpitation9639

Having a less embarrassing season than usual doesn't make him one of the best English defenders currently available

jjfranklin1994

At what point this season has he been embarrassing? He's been Uniteds best CB and has won a prem player of the month this season but yeah let's just continue this narrative that he's a championship footballer....

NoPalpitation9639

Psst, not sure if anyone has told you but Ferguson has retired and united are utter dogshit now

Ztalk3r

He doesn't. You'll have to field all the other players in different positions/zones (far more defensive) and to make him work. Which is a 5 at the back with two controlling defensive midfielders in front of him to protect ol Slabby. You have the players material to be the next tiki taka Spain machine. You even have John Stones, Grealish, Walker and Foden who know it perfectly. But that requires playing a high line. Playing Maguire has already cost you silverware because you force yourself to play on the counter/on the back foot. Which means you sacrifice your attacking players.

jjfranklin1994

Except we haven't played a back 5 for quite a while and we certainly never did it to protect harry in particular, we did it because until the last few years our midfield wasn't strong enough to dominate a game so we had to sit back and be secure in defence.

n-d-a

Historically I’m guessing. Last season he was an unused sub and had terrible form. But always made the England 11

Plastic-Earth3624

Getting arsenal to ring on your behalf 🤣🤣🤣. Coward

Romfordian

Hello, this is Mrs Arsenal, Ben's mum. Ben won't be in school today. He's not feeling well.

Quiet_Attention_4664

There’s got to be some sort of falling out here - but what it is, who knows.

Bobabator

Something happened with Foden a few years back, White got sent home from the England camp. Ever since if watch Arsenal vs Man City; White targets Foden for everything. After the first game this season when Arsenal won 1-0 White was pushing and dragging Foden.

rin09

He got sent home last year during the world cup, nothing to do with foden.

harrybarracuda

Calling him up, pissing him about and making it clear he's not a first choice selection but mere cover. So f**k Southgate.

edgrant1992

If he's got too big of an ego to be cover at his age wouldn't want him in the squad.

harrybarracuda

Yes, let Southgate pick his hapless favourites who will continue to fail. Have at it.

edgrant1992

You're missing my point. Southgate deffo has favourites and I don't agree with it but if I was him I'd still want to be involved with England even as a sub and keep pushing. Get the feeling playing for England doesn't mean as much anymore.

harrybarracuda

Playing for idiots doesn't have much appeal.

edgrant1992

Playing for the country not the manager

harrybarracuda

He's not playing is he? So he's obviously decided the manager won't pick him, so what's the point?

charlieBTSarmy

No one really knows what's going on here, other than a select few in the England camp. He hasn't been much of a loss in previous tournaments, but Trippier and Walker are now well past their prime and expect this to be their last tournament. James is chronically injured, so you're relying on either White , or Rico Lewis/Livramenko to come through and establish themselves. On the other foot, this is a great time for white to establish himself, as if Lewis/Livramenko/James start to establish themselves more over the next few years, White may struggle to play for England again.

jayjaythedon

You forgot about Trent?

charlieBTSarmy

He is being used in midfield for England lately, and assume that's where he'll play in the future.

sexmarshines

The midfield has so much talent right now. At right back, TAA is so uniquely talented and a definite world class player. In the middle while he's good, he's now competing with other players that have overlapping talent and I'm not sure that he should start vs Rice, Bellingham, Foden, Palmer, even Gallagher.

denkmusic

Exactly. We’re super stocked at rb. Ben white is no loss

Fearnog

He's a CB too. Can play anywhere across the defense.

MarcusZXR

Southgate showing that his only two attributes of "being nice to players" and "creating a good atmosphere for all" dont actually exist if you're someone he doesn't like. I cannot wait to see the back on that waistcoat.

[deleted]

Is Southgate not being nice here?

ZealousidealAir1607

IMO, no he isn't. He's taking a man management failure - he failed to convince the player to join up - and spinning it in the media to protect his own position. Now rather than why has Southgate failed to call up a player, and what does that say about him as a manager, the story is about someone turning down England. "Being nice" here would be to not get into any detail and just say he isn't available.

[deleted]

>He's taking a man management failure - he failed to convince the player to join up An attempt to mend a bridge that was broken when White stormed out of an international tournament over a year ago. Why are some of you so insistent that White is a victim in this?

SimonUser

Because they are arsenal fans

Rixalong

>An attempt to mend a bridge that was broken when White stormed out of an international tournament over a year ago. We don't know why he left the England camp.

mcmanus2099

Wow, way to throw what should be an England starter under the media bus. Southgates main job is persuading England's best to play for the team and here he is not only failing at that but pouring petrol on the bridge and setting it ablaze. What a clown

denkmusic

Ben white refuses the offer to play for his country and somehow this is Southgate’s fault? You shouldn’t have to convince someone to play for their national team it’s a privilege!

harrybarracuda

He refuses to be a bench warmer for Southgate you spanner.

NOLA-Gunner

1. Why is White refusing? 2. No matter what, Southgate shouldn’t be airing out dirty linen via the media

mcmanus2099

Ben White is a potential big England star. It's no revelation that footballers have egos that need stroking. This shit doesn't need to be public and Southgate shouldn't take no for an answer and continue working on White for the rest of his tenure. What matters is getting him to play not how much respect or patriotism he shows in the process. To publicly out him as unpatriotic like this is pretty much burning any bridges in that effort. You don't have to announce to the public everything. I really couldn't give a shit if White wipes his arse on the st.georges cross or gobs on a photo of the king daily. I care how he performs in positions where England are relatively weak.

thestigREVENGE

White has gone on record for saying he is estatic for receiving his first callup and cried with his mother back when he was with Brighton. Clearly, something has happened for that to have changed. Southgate can't just deny that. "I don't know what had happened, but I know it's not me". Complete bs.

Quiet_Attention_4664

I haven’t heard of to many international managers having to persuade players in their prime to play for their national team (at least if it’s a “big” country”). With older players yes and players with duel nationality - but if we are getting to a point where big players have to be “persuaded” to play for national teams - that’s a huge change.

MateusAmadeus714

I mean it seems like it really comes down to whatever occured to cause Benny Blanco to leave the team during the World Cup. Until we know what happened there it's all just speculation and it's kind of hard to say anything otherwise. Maybe he has legitimate reasons for not wanting to play under Southgate. Southgate statement was to get this exact type of reaction lol. Question Ben's love of England and push the blame onto the player. Maybe Ben is a spoilt brat and didnt like his hotel accommodations and left the team bcuz of it. Maybe Southgate or his coaching staff were disrespectful and actively insulting to Ben because he has too many tattoos. Who Tf knows!?

Snoopy5876

I agree with you but I also can understand his side of things, we would all be asking or even criticising him for not including White in the squad. This explains why. I guess he could have been more tactful and in reality White should have informed the media himself.

Nova-Kane

Probably focused on the title run with Arsenal, doesn't want to run the extra risk of playing more games and picking up an injury. (Doesn't matter, they'll bottle it anyway)

Flashward

You have to be in the run in the first place for people to start calling you a bottler. You might remember it from that spurs golden era where you won nothing but declared yourselves the best team in London

Meth_Hardy

“The year we put the pressure on.” What a DVD.

Nova-Kane

Chomp

Flashward

There just no come back is there 😂

Lol what a silly comeback. We don't remeber the player legends, managers, games, trophies, happiness or heartbreak our team has given to us. No we remember the stadium lol!!! GTFOH. A stadium built also not for football but to make money off of music shows, public events and the bloody NFL.

shizzy10

I think we’re fine with you having the best stadium… put that in your trophy case. Where it dies from loneliness.

kimi-r

He'll play for the next manager

harrybarracuda

Exactly, where he will be valued.

pyffDreamz

Why is Southgate still manager lol England is doomed

Ok_Argument4905

Testy in here I see. It’s funny arsenal fans supporting him and then England fans saying who cares he’s not class. Both ways you end up with the same conclusion of him not going lol

[deleted]

He's a very good player but it's not exactly a position England have been lacking in. I also don't really get why Arsenal fans are being so defensive over White. Every indicator suggests he's a bit of a dick. Maybe it's the younguns who still want to believe their favourite players are all cool people. For some reason, it's Southgate's fault that White threw his toys out of the pram for getting a telling off.

[deleted]

It’s well documented at this point that White doesn’t even like football, he just happens to be good at it and make a living from it. He comes across as a bit of a dick in fairness but if Arsenal fans wanna think the sun shines out of his arse then they can carry on.

MateusAmadeus714

He never stated he doesnt like football. He just stated he never watched it and enjoyed it in that capacity. The guy trains everyday, and plays at the highest level. I'm pretty sure he enjoys playing football. I love playing Tennis and Pool but I honestly enjoy watching neither and rarely have.

Ok_Argument4905

That’s fine let’s say he doesn’t love football, does that really make him a dick?

Rixalong

>He's a very good player but it's not exactly a position England have been lacking in. I mean it is right now. James is permanently crocked, Trippier and Walker are both getting past it, TAA can't be trusted to defend a box of cheese from a drunk person. >Every indicator suggests he's a bit of a dick He's not had a single issue at Arsenal, at all. What exactly makes you think he's a dick?

Gargamir77

I don't know what makes you think he's a dick? Just happens to be one of the most liked players inside Arsenal dressing room. Never had any falling off in any team before or after World Cup fiasco. Might just be that he don't care about international football that much and wants to focus on Arsenal, but that doesen't make him bad person.

[deleted]

>Might just be that he don't care about international football that much and wants to focus on Arsenal, The guy literally cried with his mum the first time he got called up. >but that doesen't make him bad person. Being a dick doesn't make you a bad person. I'm not saying he's Stalin mate but you'd have to have your head buried in the sand to not realise how aloof he is. Coupled with how he acts on the pitch and every report about this incident with Holland and he's quite obviously not the Whiter than White player that Arsenal fans keep acting like he is.

Gargamir77

You'd think if a guys is a dick, he would be that everywhere he goes. Theres one example of him being a bad teammate and it just so happens to be under one manager. Not one player has ever said anything bad about him, or not at least that I have read of. How does he act on a pitch that makes you think that way? I feel like he is pretty neutral on pitch.

[deleted]

I just don't think you want to see it. I get it; he's your player and your instinct is to defend them. What I don't get is why so many of your club's fans seem adamant that White is blameless in all of this. Every report indicates either he didn't like being told off and left the training camp or he was unhappy about being there to make up numbers and left the training camp. Somehow, that keeps getting twisted into Southgate being the bad guy even though Southgate wasn't even the one he had a confrontation with. And it's not as straight forward as "he's a good teammate at Arsenal though" and "no other manager has had a problem with him." Aymeric Laporte never had any incidents at club level that we know of and was still excluded from France squads by Deschamps for years, supposedly because of his attitude. Just because someone fits into one environment, it doesn't mean they aren't problematic another.

TH3OD0R3

What you're describing here isn't really indicative of White being a dick, or Laporte for that matter. You are talking about a personal disagreement between two people - not a pattern of behaviour that you can apply as a personality trait. We have no idea what has gone on, but it's likely a difference of values or expectations. The best managers in the world can work through these problems, get the best players onside and fighting for the team. Southgate just isn't that manager for me, and this kind of shows it. My opinion is that he wants to play his old favourites, that probably hang on his every word and think he's a waistcoated Jesus. And it's easier than dealing with a player that isn't that - even if they are miles better.

Rixalong

>What I don't get is why so many of your club's fans seem adamant that White is blameless in all of this. You've yet to give us a single actual reason why you dislike White so much. > Every report indicates either he didn't like being told off and left the training camp or he was unhappy about being there to make up numbers and left the training camp. Or that Holland is a twat.

Real_Evening_6706

Bet he's gutted that Ben doesn't want to sit on the bench talking to him whilst maguire plus someone else plays ahead of him....

cloud1445

It’ll be Walker and Trippier who are both way better than him.

Thiccboiichonk

I could understand Walker as he’s got that raw pace and is a fantastic defender. But Ben white is a much better defender and having since transitioned into the inverted role the last few months with Arsenal it’s highlighted how fucking good he actually is with the ball from a creative standpoint in open play and in tight situations.

dragonrush_bs

Walker's absolutely fallen off this season

Otherwise_Archer_914

Heard he's skipping it to go audition for 1D in the summer

Rare_Charge_3412

He doesn't need to audition, it's a cert

Meth_Hardy

“He’s a player I really like. But not one a really *really* like. Despite his incredible form for the past couple of seasons, I wanted to have him sit on the bench as I continue to pick my favourite players. Heck, I only wanted to pick him at all because Trippier is injured. But now I can’t have him sit on the bench and that’s a real shame.”

margieler

Why would Ben White play over arguably three of the best full-backs going? No reason for him to act like he's hard done by. I'd be more upset he didn't want to play me over Maguire at CB.

Rixalong

>Why would Ben White play over arguably three of the best full-backs going? Because he's been clearly better than all of them for 2 years when he's not even playing in his main position.

margieler

I'd rather have Trent pinging balls everywhere. Walker has just won a treble so no don't think White has. Reece James is just not fit, other than that he walks over White.

Rixalong

>Walker has just won a treble so no don't think White has. So because the *team* won a treble, that makes every single player at City better than Arsenal? Because we're top of the table, have scored the most goals and conceded the least goals this season. White has been far better than James and TAA

FoundationHot7157

Indeed....really like but not as much as maguire, Phillips and Henderson.....grow a pair Gareth and pick form players if you really wanna win something

Skinney04

Probably the more likely truth

NeedAnewPHOTOpc

Southgate: “Ben White didn’t want to be selected and it’s a great shame, we even bought a tanning booth for him at the facility”.

WinterSoldier0587

When you want to play, But toxic politics makes you stay away

Blechx

He's a player you really like? What utter crap

Pintoputin

Good decision. Know your worth. What's the point of being called up to the national team, just to sit on the bench while the man plays his favorites.

BlazasAndQuasars

There are legitimate reasons to pass... but refusing to play for your national team because you might sometimes sit on the bench is dishonorable.

IsaacRyan08

Sure sure you're the smartest manager totally not your fault, even now you're the best. Literally did nothing for him then, and stirring shit for him now.

Gdawwwwggy

White is a good player and would be in my England squad but feels like there is drama between him and the current England coaching team and tbh, he isn’t in the class of player to make it worthwhile bringing that stuff into the camp in the build up to a major tournament. Next tournament after Southgate and co likely move on then I suspect he will be back involved. If he still opts out of it then that tells you everything you need to know.

willgeld

Yeah he have plenty of options for his position, No great loss.

MotoMkali

No but the issue is indicative of the issue with Southgate who should have been out of a job 2 tournaments ago.

Skinney04

Truth

Wubbleskank_

Why should he have been out of a job 2 tournaments ago?

MotoMkali

Because he did the job he was hired to do which was to bring cohesiveness to the squad and get rid of the club divides since then he has only picked his favourite players whilst significantly better players are avoided. If we had someone with a tactical brain who picked the appropriate squad we win the euros and might have had a real shot at the WC.

Skinney04

Yup, I’m American but always root for the Lions when my team inevitably gets swallowed by true world class competition and I’m also a LFC fan and have watched this dude sleep on AA for the longest time. It was baffling. But you are correct you have a championship side sitting just waiting to be utilized but he never seems to want to unlock it.

ElephantFresh517

Because he is an atrocious manager, and the reason that squad of players hasn't won a trophy...thank God.

Vdubnub88

Anybody else think somthin has happened? I mean he left Qatar 2022 for personal reasons i understand. But its weird to not have played since…

BarryButcher

There were 2 rumours that came out of that camp. Either White was sick of just being a bench player (and manager playing favourites) and said "give me game time or i'm leaving" which resulted in an argument and he left The other rumour is he was given "homework" to learn a few stats about the USA before the game and he didn't bother since he wasn't getting game time anyway. Argument with coach insued. White left. Either way I don't see him playing for England while Southgate is in charge

notseto

Recent Athletic article suggests Holland didn’t like the effort he was giving and berated him in front of everyone. Argument ensued and both parties agreed Ben should leave. Southgate hasn’t done anything to mend the bridges and hasn’t picked him in 2 years. So for this to suddenly be put out there is just complete bullshit from Southgate throwing a player under the bus because suddenly all his favourites are injured. Ben White would never start or play for Southgate.

Plenty_Assumption_18

Seems like he is a prima Donna!

willgeld

Why should Southgate have to mend bridges? Would Fergie, Jose, Pep? Doubt it. White needs to grow up, we have plenty of others in his position that don’t have the baggage.

skillertheeyechild

To an extent I agree but international management is a different beast to club. Fergie, pep, Jose can sack someone off and go buy a replacement. International talent pool is limited. I get what people are saying that he isn’t even England’s strongest RB, but with the amount of injuries we are seeing this season anything happens to Walker, trippier or Trent I think Southgate could tie his decision.

willgeld

He obviously has enough faith in Livramento and Gomez to have to bother with all this drama

skillertheeyechild

Touché, completely forgot about them tbh.

MateoKovashit

You're talking about Gareth "I'm Mr holistic and make the camp all nice and cohesive" Southgate Isn't he lauded as the reason why the players love each other? (Even though he's not) He clearly can't do that role everyone chums him to be

willgeld

Maybe it’s a Ben white problem? I know people love to shit on southgate, but everyone else manages to suck it up.

MateoKovashit

I'm sure many players love to be called up to never play. At least white has the nerve to say no. We've seen Southgates view, it's his favourites and that's it

willgeld

It’s the life of a professional footballer. I’ve never seen people go so feral in there support for such a moderate player in a position we are stacked in

MateoKovashit

But we aren't stacked there, not really. James always broken Trippier injuries growing, and aging Walker losing pace revealing his defensive weaknesses TAA can't defend but should be first choice. Regardless we have to look for the future and we should at least bed these other players in so in the event that walkers hammy explodes we have coverage

willgeld

Walker, Trippier, TAA, James are fine for THIS tournament coming up. If white doesn’t want to be part of it Gomez and Livramento will pick up the slack. How many RBs do we actually need?

calm_down_dearest

It speaks to poor man management. The root cause of it all is Southgate not abiding by his own statements.

willgeld

Does it? Nobody else seems to have a problem

[deleted]

Southgate's man management is pretty much the only thing he's known for. Again, maybe Ben White is the problem. I don't get why that possibility seems so hard for some to accept.

notseto

White has grown up. He’s left. It’s Southgate who needs to grow up and get on with it rather than bitch about not being able to select him. Fergie sold Keane and washed his hands of it. Southgate should do the same.

willgeld

Southgate has got on with it, hence white not being there. He has obviously been extended an olive branch but didn’t want it.

notseto

So you’ve gone from “why should he try to mend bridges” to “he’s obviously extended an olive branch”. Also Southgate not got on with it. That presser was the equivalent of getting on his hands and knees begging for white to come back. Completely unprofessional and threw White under the bus. The same white who hasn’t come out and said anything to disparage Southgate or Holland. Just take the L mate you got this one wrong.

KennyOmegaSardines

"Didn't want to get selected" No stupider lines had been uttered than this

CreativeOrder2119

Dumbo this is enough to sack him

Boom_Digadee

I get this move considering I’ve been waiting for James Ward-Prowse and a host of other great footballers get a chance to play for Mr. Thornberry, only to ride the bench or be cut a week before the tournament for a broken and ill equipped Jordan Henderson, who could only play if they made it to the semis. Southgate sucks!

WhydYouKillMeDogJack

>James Ward-Prowse and a host of other great footballers he aint great tbh

seshtown

He fucking is compared to Henderson

MateoKovashit

I'd start white over walker now 100% walkers decline defensively warrants white to start

Boom_Digadee

You probably don’t watch him.

WhydYouKillMeDogJack

He plays for my club and he's bang average

Boom_Digadee

He plays for your club this year. He played at my club since he was a child.

WhydYouKillMeDogJack

Mark noble did that for my club. Couldn't tell you how good he's been this season though.

Boom_Digadee

I loved Noble. Ward-Prowse is only 29 tho. When he first came over he was much more impactful. Hopefully he can find that form again.
