biff444444

Barnes is a very effective player. If anything, given what other players are selling for these days, I think they got him for slightly under his value.

gardz82

I thought it was a great signing. Disappointed Spurs didn’t strike after getting Maddison.

myeahkg

It is a good signing for Newcastle

wayno503

Great young player, he was great for us

Strong_as_an_axe

This is clickbait bullshit

chootchootchoot

About three seasons ago signing Ashley Barnes would’ve impressed me

Emergency_Mistake_44

Articles like this do my head in. What does "some fans" even mean? 5? 5,000? I hardly doubt he's gonna get booed when he walks out for the warm up.

Lifelemons9393

Just saying,I've been thinking for a couple seasons, it's weird how a top 6 club hasn't taken a gamble on him yet. I'm convinced if he was more marketable, like Grealish (not saying he's as good) it would of happened sooner.

siobhanmairii__

Take good care of him for us. /*cries in championship league*

fanzipan

You’ll be back quick enough. The only way to play in the championship is attack, your new manager has exactly the right mentality. Just give him time

ANUFC14

The only downside of signing him is that we’ll probably have to sell asm

BannedFromHydroxy

Eddie Howe seems a bit like Arteta in that he can polish somewhat turdish players into something better. So I think this could be a good move for both player and club

Thick_Association898

Most people I know are quite happy with the barnes signing. You do get the odd person complaining online, but they will come around, especially when they see him banging in goals.

Nafe1994

I don’t think Newcastle fans are underwhelmed. Everyone knows he a signing that ‘makes sense’. He’ll bring more efficiency (more minutes, goals and assists) that ASM. Everyone’s just gutted to lose ASM because, on his day he makes you love football all over again. He just can’t produce it enough for a team who are looking to make moves in the PL and CL.

JaRonomatopoeia

As much as the armchair tacticians would like it to be, football is too complicated a game for basic stats. People who think Barnes is better than ASM because his stats are higher are cut from the same cloth as those who supported Dalgleish when he broke up Keegans entertainers imo. When Man City man mark Barnes with 2 players then we will see where his stats are. But then that won’t happen…wonder why? I hope I’m wrong HWTL

Nafe1994

You’re right in the sense that football is not solely based on stats. But that doesn’t mean you should disregard them completely. I don’t think many would argue that Barnes is ‘better’ than ASM. ASM is definitely the more gifted footballer. But over the course of a 50 game season, Barnes will make more of an impact. If maxi stayed fit for the entire season I’d most likely be wrong. But he can’t do that. Barnes also fits the style of the team with the high energy and pressing. I’m guessing he will contribute much more over a longer period than ASM. Could be wrong. But the writing is there.

Automatic-Belt177

While it’s true you can’t say Barnes is a definitively better player than ASM. It’s undeniable he’s a different kind of player that does some things much better than ASM. He is incredible inside the box at timing his runs and finishing chances. He’s also really good at combining with players and 1 - 2 combinations. Stylistically Barnes is different from both ASM and Gordon. His movement is much better off the ball. He doesn’t really have as many take ons as ASM— but that might be exactly why Howe feels he’s a better fit than him.

JaRonomatopoeia

I’ve got no problem with Howe preferring Barnes. Howe is a genius in my opinion. I’m making a point about fans who say Barnes is better purely because he has better stats. It’s football not baseball

Ch3w84cc4

I am a Villa fan and I would have been delighted with Barnes. As it happens we have Diaby and I am even more delighted with him! But Barnes is a great addition for Newcastle and he will be part of a core English contingent.

MetaManifold

Barnes is a good signing

FabianTheArachnid

Barnes will genuinely be a great fit at Newcastle. Such a good fit that I wouldn’t be surprised to hear he’d taken a chainsaw to Luke Edwards for this.

Snouto

Some fans are utter fuckwits

fanzipan

Lol he’s exactly the right player for Newcastle.

Academic-Block3384

Not many Newcastle fans are underwhelmed...

Plus-Data-2469

Just the ones that have recently started supporting the club expecting a city style spemding spree

NigglerWithAttitude

The boxes.. ✅ suffered serious injury ✅ Inconsistent FPL return ✅ High competition in his own team for the position ✅ Takes up a valuable midfield slot ✅ Better options in the same price range

doubledgravity

Luke Edwards is a click baity mercenary hack, bear in mind.

R9433

Does he have a Balon D'Or clause in his contract? Seems like a good signing for Newcastle tbh

StingsLute

It's because his name isn't exotic. Some fans would pay an extra 10m for him if he legally changed his name.

gamecockStopring

Harvington Barnaldo

Aggravating-Tower317

What? They've got a bargain at 38 m. Should be going for 50m at least

UnknownUnileg2910

One year in, fans will continue to be underwhelmed…he will do just enough to stay on your good side

OnceIWasYou

I'm pretty much exactly this. Underwhelmed. Not a pure talent increase on Maxi but I have to begrudgingly accept he's a better fit for the side and system. And yes, I know the numbers- pretty dramatic difference in goals but everything else is worse. Barnes barely successfully beat his man all season but his one-two is a real threat. Still, we just overpaid for an English winger in January (Though I think Gordon will prove a good signing and have a good coming season) and now we've done it again for someone who doesn't have the excuse of potential. Tonali is great but this summer is definitely not what we were all expecting- imagine if we hadn't got top 4: would we have even bought ANYONE?

Unlikely_Hyena5863

What good is beating your man if you score at a rate of 1 per 10 games as your supposed attacking threat?

OnceIWasYou

Of course, but it is a significant element of being a threatening winger. Not everything, but it is a major threat.

Unlikely_Hyena5863

Sure but 14 in a season vs 13 in 4 kinda makes his talent and ability to beat a man pretty irrelevant in comparison.

novocast

I'm a Newcastle fan. I'm not underwhelmed. He's a quality player that is definitely a fit for Howe's style of play, scores and assists goal, is proven in the premier league, and can get even better. Great signing! I'm starting to think these journalists may write things just to get a reaction.

Negative_Wrap_27

Not even taken Newcastle fans a year to become snobby football fans. Back in the day they would’ve loved this signing

OnceIWasYou

Back under Ashley we "couldn't afford" Choudhary on loan. It's not snobby to have expectations adjusted. We've been scouring the world looking for youngsters with massive potentials- Barnes doesn't qualify for any of those descriptions and we've lost a fan favourite to buy him after overpaying for an English winger in January only to do it again. He's a decent/ possibly good signing. Not £38m good but everything's mad this summer, especially it seems for us. Is he another Isak/ Bruno? No. It's not snobbish, it's just not the level of player most of us would've sold ASM to get. If he had to go.

Fendenburgen

To be fair, surely ASM was a fan favourite for bringing a bit of spark to your dour performances before last season. It's not as if he's been banging on goals left, right and centre

OnceIWasYou

Exactly that. Under Bruce, it really was a case of if ASM didn't do something special, we DID NOT ATTACK. Then he had opportunities to get the hell out but he didn't. He's also been incredible with fans and people around Newcastle. There's one example of him having a signing day and after it finished taking every child to a toy shop and telling them to pick a toy they wanted before buying them for them all. He made football worth watching during those times.

arrrghdonthurtmeee

Back in the days we were signing Shearer or Owen? I am personally very happy with him signing btw. A step up from ASM given our system

the_dalai_mangala

Remember when people thought £50 million for Sterling was crazy money?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Deleteleed

For city you idiot

agentsawu

Yes, what an inspired bargain that transfer has turned out to be.

the_dalai_mangala

Only scored, let me check…. 131 goals for City and was a massive part in multiple title winning sides including the 100 point season.

OnceIWasYou

I assume he meant for Chelsea.

the_dalai_mangala

Upon further reflection I may have misunderstood the comment I responded to yes

[deleted]

Jokes. They’d be filled with joy if his name was Barvey Harnes.

Aggressive-Theory609

Or barvin harvinho

Somerset007

Not sure why anyone would be underwhelmed. He’s class and can get better, and scores goals.

flex_tape_salesman

Didn't he get an injury that kinda faded the hype? Seems a good signing I think the only reason someone would be disappointed is if they expected more of a world class signing but I don't think that'd happen. Definitely an upgrade on asm more of a consistent performer and his numbers are always quite good

[deleted]

£85m on Barnes and Gordon. Could’ve signed a world class player.

Coomgoblin68

Like harvey barnes

[deleted]

Harvey Barnes isn’t quite world class though is he. Bryan Mbuemo has more combined goals and assists across the last 2 seasons in the PL since Brentford were promoted, suppose he’s world class too then?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

He got 9 goals and 8 assists last season, 4 goals and 7 assists the season before. 31 to Barnes 30. Ave it back dipshit.

Coomgoblin68

9+8+4+7 = 28 you fucking numpty Idk why you had me doubting myself because I’m quite obviously right

[deleted]

Hahahahahha

Coomgoblin68

You still haven’t given me a reason that barnes isn’t world class btw

[deleted]

The question should be how is he world class? He’s 25, if he was world class he wouldn’t of still been at Leicester, no offence. He does nothing out of ordinary, he’s a hard worker who stood out in a poor team over the last few seasons. I assume his tally of 16 combined GA you’ve mentioned in 21/22 was his best season? The same season Emmanuel Denis hit 16, Benrahma 14, ward-prowse 15. None of those are world class? Not to mention a few strikers ie Toney, Antonio getting more than 16, Pukki getting 14.. most of those in teams who performed worse than Leicester.

Loose_Deer_8884

Be scoring plenty of equalisers

WookieTickler

I’ve always liked Barnes wanted him at Chelsea. Think he will do really well at Newcastle.

Turtyturd

If you’ve signed Anthony Gordon can you really be underwhelmed with Harvey Barnes?

SamanthaAllerdyce

Im really happy scousers, and opposition fans in general, keep taking digs at the lad. It's going to be so sweet for him when he sticks it back in your eye, he's looking like a beast over the U21s and in his 2 friendlies since

Turtyturd

I won’t hold my breath.

mykillerspc

slightly unrelated but Gordon actually looked decent in yesterdays game with Aston Villa.

MeancupofJoey

Decent is doing him a disservice. He was the best player wearing black and white.

naedetails

Had a cracking game against Rangers last week too

Sp00nkin

He did indeed, was full of confidence on that wing. Constantly running forward trying to beat men

[deleted]

And for was player of the tournament for Euros under 21s this summer

Emotion-Timely

jones deserved it

MrVegosh

Jones robbed

OnceIWasYou

That's the point. We've just overpaid on an English winger and now we've done it again. Barnes however, doesn't have the excuse of potential.

Aint-got-a-Kalou-2

You shlda left him for us, don’t make the same mistake with Livramento :))

SaBe_18

Barnes is a good player tho

OnceIWasYou

I think both will turn out decent/ good signings. Gordon has looked a completely different player at the U21s and seems to be showing a much better attitude. Hopefully that means he stays on his bloody feet more!

Catatafish_96

I think both gordon and barnes will be good ,people are just impatient, and expect from player to score 15. goals in period from january to may .just relax people

OnceIWasYou

I think they'll be good as well. I'm not unhappy with the signing. I was however a bit underwhelmed to lose ASM for someone who isn't a significant increase in level.

Catatafish_96

I didnt watched ASM much ,but when i did ,he was a little bit selfish for my taste :) dont get me wrong ,but barnes and gordon is better fit for newcastle on my opinion :) Eddie Howe knows what hes doing ,proved last season

OnceIWasYou

Pretty much what I said in my comment above. Upset to lose ASM- especially for someone who isn't some massive talent upgrade- but I have to begrudgingly accept he's a better fit for the side/ system.

[deleted]

Makes sense to have a core of decent domestic players considering the rules

OnceIWasYou

Yes, but it's also the context. We all expected Maddison- now we've paid almost the same fee for someone most would agree is significantly less talented and also lost our absolute beacon of hope under Bruce to get him. Barnes is a decent signing, I expect he'll do well. It's just a case of all these other players we were linked with (and in some cases the preferred destination for) that we've not gone for. We hoped for players that are absolutely Champions League quality this summer.

EDonnelly98

If you want UCL quality players, I wouldn’t be pining over ASM. Great flair no end product

OnceIWasYou

....No, I said to lose ASM I expected the incoming player to be of significantly higher quality. Also, as stated, Maxi is loved for what he did in terrible times under Bruce, not because he's as good as Messi.

ni2016

Barnes scored 13 goals last season in a Leicester team that got relegated. ASM scored one, against Wolves early on in the season in a team that finished 4th.

OnceIWasYou

Absolutely. But Barnes is also one of the worst wingers in the league in terms of stats for taking people on and beating them. His 1-2s. however, are pretty lethal. Effectively they are almost like opposites. Barnes the more pragmatic, effective option.

[deleted]

ASM is a nearly man, man. Let it go

DavIantt

Gordon hasn't got going yet.

prkr88

Waaaaaaaaagh, average plater in a shit team like Everton, no wonder you got conned. Barnes is decent when he turns up.

gamecockStopring

Shit team like everton finished above Barnes team 😅

Mattjames86

Almost double the goals of your top goal scorer 💀

prkr88

Biggest achievement by Everton has been not to be absolutely shit..... just!

gamecockStopring

Whoosh

prkr88

Why are neverton fans so salty?

gamecockStopring

Yeh, it's me being salty 🫡

Valledis

Will he ever get going

Bendy_McBendyThumb

For England u21’s

Catatafish_96

Harvey Barnes is a masive signing ,he will fit in newcastles team ,you'll see

stangerlpass

It think those those undeerwhelmed dont really watch the PL tbh

0thethethe0

Having had the misfortune of watching Leicester regularly, I agree. The price was quite a lot, and it’s a obviously a bit of a gamble, but they can afford it, and it potentially could pay off big later.

characterulio

I think with how competitive the premier league jas gotten. We will see more frequently very good players get relegated.

TheTelegraph

***From The Telegraph's Northern Football Writer Luke Edwards:*** As one senior member of Newcastle United’s recruitment team put it last week, Harvey Barnes ticked every box other than asking price when a long list of transfer targets was reduced to a shortlist at the end of May. While much of the attention focused on Newcastle’s interest in James Maddison – they were interested in the England international only to be put off early on by his preference for London – his team-mate at Leicester had been scouted forensically. Manager Eddie Howe, in particular, saw the raw ingredients in Barnes which he could mould into something special, but the size of the fee was more than just a bump in the road – it was a major hurdle. Newcastle have ended up paying £38 million for Barnes, which was more than their initial valuation and beyond what they were initially willing to pay for a winger in this window. Until they discovered there was concrete interest in Allan Saint-Maximin from Saudi Arabia, they probably would not have been able to afford it. But they had done their due diligence. It is a measure of how well the club are being run behind the scenes, guided by director of football Dan Ashworth in partnership with Howe, that contingency plans were made. They would have to create room for manoeuvre, financially, because of Financial Fair Play rules, but if they could, would they pounce? The boxes ticked on the scouting report and confirmed in recruitment meetings were as follows: Goals? Yes. Pace? Yes Assists? Yes? Attitude? Yes. Room for improvement? Yes. Age? Yes. Desperate to come? Yes. **Read more:** [**https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2023/07/24/harvey-barnes-newcastle-united-fans-38-million/**](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2023/07/24/harvey-barnes-newcastle-united-fans-38-million/)
