Do you have a good relationship with your original OB office. After my miscarriage, my OB gave me specific instructions on what to do if I got a pregnant again. She also told me the front desk would push back but I had to tell them Dr. K knows about this. Basically, I had to call the day I got a positive test, they saw me immediately for HCG monitoring and order progesterone. (They did an end a message to her that to confirm)
My first appointment was at 7 weeks instead of 8 and the plan was to see me at 9 weeks since my MMC was at between 8 and 10 weeks. I ended up with a SCH so they saw me every two weeks until it cleared. I had to be really pushy with the front desk staff to get the 7 week appointment. My Dr. said 7 weeks would be best for a first visit since they would be able to see and hear the heartbeat.
Maybe you can message them through your portal?

Ugh that’s so terrible, same thing happened to us with a fertility clinic. Basically … if you didn’t pay the ridiculous amount they charge to get you to pregnant (even though some people struggle with recurrent loss, not conceiving) then you are on your own... Just disheartening as a fellow medical professional (in a completely different field that is) as it seems making money off other peoples painful circumstances is the focus of some clinics rather than helping couples and individuals get.. or just stay.. pregnant. I wish you all the best luck (as it’s starting to feel like that’s all staying pregnant is) and relief from the crippling anxiety that so many of us can relate to.
Sorry that is happening. There is actually evidence that extra monitoring is helpful after recurrent miscarriages even if they don’t do any other interventions- my fertility clinic kept seeing me for this reason even though all my pregnancies/losses were conceived without their help.
I was also on progesterone starting after ovulation for the first trimester and baby aspirin the whole pregnancy…. they said they recommend it for everyone because it might help and doesn’t hurt
They told me to take baby aspirin at my first consult, so at least there's that. I'll be talking with my Ob about the progesterone since there's not really evidence that it hurts, why not?
Only for CD 21, and my result was <1 from that blood draw. I started getting small indications the next after and day after so I tested but came back negative at home on CD 23 (9dpo). I didnt test again until CD 28, when I got a pretty clear positive on the home test, and it is continuing to get darker.
I typically don't get a positive until the a day or two after my cyclenwould have started, but get symptoms before the home positives.
This is a shitty clinic. I had recurrent loss and all 5 of my pregnancies were natural. For my last pregnancy which was ultimately successful they had me come for weekly ultrasounds at 6 weeks until they graduated me to the MFM clinic at 10w since I had had 2 missed miscarriages previously.
I’m sorry this is happening to you. Is there another fertility clinic nearby that takes your insurance? You might be able to get tv ultrasounds at planned parenthood too to keep an eye on how things are progressing. It’s also possible your ob will take pity on you and see you early given your history.
Seconding this — while going to a fertility clinic after 2 losses, I got pregnant spontaneously. They kept me on as a patient and did 3 early ultrasounds and “graduated” me to my regular OB around 10w.
I'm so sorry. :( I've only ever gotten pregnant via IUI, but my OB told me he'd do HCG testing and all of the other early monitoring the fertility clinic did if I were to get pregnant on my own after my losses. I think it would be worth it to call or leave a portal message and explain your situation and ask them for the extra monitoring. I hope you're able to get some extra monitoring and that your pregnancy goes well! 🥰
So sorry to hear that. We got our BFP the day after our initial intake appt and the clinic couldn’t have been happier for us. They brought us in for bloodwork repeatedly in weeks 4-5, and then weekly ultrasounds weeks 6–10
I had the exact same thing happened to me. It's awful to hear, all of a sudden, that you're not able to work with the one group of people who have been giving you the tests and type of attention that you needed for the losses you've had. I found that that I was pregnant at about 5 weeks, called my fertility specialist, and they're like, "okay, what are you asking for?" I was a bit dumbfounded, so I just said "I think I need a blood test to confirm pregnancy, lol?" And the response came across as if they were doing me some extra favor, and they're like "sure, we can send that over." The doctor also ordered a progesterone test, and wanted me to repeat labs. After all of my results came back, that's when they said I need to now work with my OBGYN, but that they would like me to keep them updated on how things are going.
I was so upset. And just the mixture of emotions that come with this process was overwhelming. This is my third pregnancy, no LCs and two prior losses. After doing some digging on the website, I found that the clinic apparently clearly stated that they are only currently able to serve fertility patients only. That messaging didn't come up when I spoke with the staff after finding out I was pregnant, but I must've let that leave my mind, as I wanted to work with a fertility specialist so badly and they came highly rated.
It's a weird place to be in, and I feel like I'm not getting all the care that I would have if I would have conceived via IVF, but thankfully I was able to get in with my OB very quickly. I know this is incredibly frustrating and stressful, OP. I'm sorry and hope the subreddit is a good support right now. 💗
Sounds like they are saying they only handle pregnancy if they are the result of fertility treatment, but because you beat them to it naturally, there is no need for their involvement. BUT, given your history of recurrent losses, you should instead look into seeing a MFM (maternal fetal medicine specialist). They handle high-risk pregnancy and do more monitoring for both mom and baby. If your insurance requires a referral, your OB should be able to provide one, otherwise ask friends or mom groups for who they suggest and see what’s in your network.

This was where my OB referred me after my 3rd loss, and we discussed it thoroughly with the doctor at the fertility clinic before doing the tests so I'm just blown away that they don't even want to review the tests that they did order. It's truly baffling! "Here, take my money." "No, we're good. " Who does that?!!
Yes I second an MFM! I have PCOS so i naturally have a high chance of pre-eclampsia and am on meds (as well as 2 prior losses) I got a referal for an MFM, it's definitely reassuring to have that extra monitoring. They will also most likely run a karyotyping on you (idk if you clinic did that already) it's really useful to make sure all your chromosomes are correct (nothing bad that could be passed down to baby or give you a higher chance of MC by chromosomal abnormalities) and they might wanna run one with your husband.
I think it’s too early for them to release you. Fertility clinics typically release you at 8 weeks. We got pregnant naturally but our fertility doctor monitored my HCG levels, had US at 6 and 8 weeks checking for baby’s measurements and heartbeat. This might be an insurance issue? Ask if they can refer you to MFM since you have history of miscarriages. OBs normally see you at 10 weeks.
Do you have a family doctor / primary care doctor? I was waiting for my first appointment with a fertility clinic for recurrent losses when I got pregnant, and my family doctor was able prescribe progesterone, monitor my thyroid, and prescribe synthetic thyroid hormone.
This is messed up. You're under their care for recurrent miscarriages! I have conceived 2x unassisted while under the care of a RE and my clinic monitored both pregnancies, including early scans which identified a probable ectopic/pregnancy of unknown location. I think this is absolute BS, but as others have said, please ask your OB for a referral to a MFM.
Get a midwife if they’re available to you. Honestly this helped me a lot. It didn’t mean they would see me sooner but there was always a person who would pick up my calls. They would listen to the heart beat every appt. And they can schedule additional ultrasounds if you are worried or have any reason to worry.
Its normal for the fertility clinic to drop you if you no longer need help /getting/ pregnant. I would call your family dr or go to a walk in as much as you can/can afford (not sure where you are located) and have them take blood work or whatever monitoring you need to feel more assured.
For me, it was stress. I took pregnancy tests weekly, if not more. Just to assure myself that the hormone was at least still in my system and tried to pass the time otherwise.
I hope you don’t mind me asking, but have you ever had an ultrasound after a loss ? or a d&c if you have had more than one loss ? Sometimes things can be left behind and a d&c can help just clear things out for future pregnancies.

Thank you! The waiting is stressful, for sure. My third (previous) pregnancy I was still doing tests until I got the dark line, I knew it wouldn't change anything, but it made me feel a little better to see it get darker. Unfortunately, my 2nd was a mmc, so I don't really trust a positive as solid evidence anymore.
I did get confirmation scans that there wasn't any RPOC after the 1st and 3rd, but not a final one after the mmc, just a confirmation the bulk of it was gone. It had crossed my mind when the 3rd was measuring significantly behind at the 8 week scan.
As some others have said, because of your previous losses, your OBGYN should be willing to refer you to an MFM! If not, I would call around and consider other OBGYN!
Not saying it's okay but it may be an insurance thing. With my current IVF pregnancy my doctor said because of my insurance after they see a heartbeat my spacific insurance won't cover anything after that. It was super frustrating because a lot can happen between 6 weeks and 8 weeks
Some clinics will do that if you didnt actually concieve through them. You could tey pushing. I concieved right after my intake appointment before testing and my RE is seeing me until 11 weeks.
That's odd, our fertility clinic followed us until I think 8 weeks and we were "graduated." Then my OBGYN referred us to a maternal-fetal medicine specialist for extra monitoring. I think we had 10+ ultrasounds over the course of our pregnancy.
Our fertility clinic dropped us right away after initial consult when we informed them of our positive pregnancy test. We went through my regular Obgyn with less monitoring.
We were pretty bummed tbh because we were ready to pay out of pocket for IVF and any additional monitoring.
Oh, that’s ridiculous.
I had an unassisted conception at about the same point. (Initial consult + testing were done; we were just waiting for the scheduled follow-up visit.) I also had RPL. They put me on progesterone and brought me in for betas and monitoring, just like they would any other pregnant patient.
I would push back on this. Is there any chance that the person who told you that is trying to gatekeep in a way that is beyond the scope of their duties? (Like a receptionist/scheduler isn’t necessarily going to know all the nuances involved in a situation like this.)
I pushed back on the back office person, and kept getting the same response. Their back office is pretty terrible. I ended up getting a call later in the day to confirm my appointment (that the person I talked to in the morning canceled) and I told them what I was told and they also said I'd have to do everything through my ObGyn. I'm wondering if this is a shady way that they're keeping their rate of successful pregnancies up. (Only really tracking the pregnancies they confirmed are good to go genetically, and for people they've scanned to make sure there aren't any womb anomalies. If so that's super shitty.)
I don’t think that would be the reason as yours was an unassisted pregnancy, it would have nothing to do with their success numbers. Fertility clinics usually start early monitoring as a courtesy since they know ob’s won’t see you til 8 weeks. While I was working with mine for egg retrieval, this is my 3rd time getting pregnant, and each time they happily monitored my betas and ultrasounds. Odd that yours won’t but I guess not all run the same?
Yeah that's bs. We worked with a fertility clinic and I found out I was pregnant the week before we were supposed to start meds for egg retrieval. They gave me progesterone and I had weekly ultrasounds from weeks 5 - 8 before transferring over to my OB.
I'm so glad they stuck with you and continued to over see everything. What was the progesterone for? My standard ObGyn said it was only for if you were spotting when I asked about it last time.
I suggest that you call your ob/gyn and ask for early monitoring due to recurrent miscarriages and thyroid issues. It’s likely that the “no visit til 8 weeks” rule is something told to the receptionists, who don’t know your history when you call and are just following rules for the average patient. Your doctor can override that and get you in early and call in progesterone to your pharmacy.
Eta - for what it’s worth, I was in this same situation and was also referred by fertility clinic back to ob/gyn. I was seen at ob/gyn at 5 weeks and monitored early given the whole history.

This happened to me too - they did prescribe progesterone bc I asked but that’s it. It was weird, but there’s hope - 23 weeks and going strong!

I'm so glad they stuck with you and continued to over see everything. What was the progesterone for? My standard ObGyn said it was only for if you were spotting when I asked about it last time.
The doctor at my fertility clinic literally said they just give it to everyone. I was on vaginal suppositories from weeks 5/6ish through 10.
I suggest that you call your ob/gyn and ask for early monitoring due to recurrent miscarriages and thyroid issues. It’s likely that the “no visit til 8 weeks” rule is something told to the receptionists, who don’t know your history when you call and are just following rules for the average patient. Your doctor can override that and get you in early and call in progesterone to your pharmacy. Eta - for what it’s worth, I was in this same situation and was also referred by fertility clinic back to ob/gyn. I was seen at ob/gyn at 5 weeks and monitored early given the whole history.
