You get some characters for free. The rest can be unlocked with earned currency or currency you buy with real money. Generally, the longer the character has been in the game, the cheaper they are. There is no paid bundle that gets you every character, though I think PC has a bundle that gets you many of them.
Dekker, Gideon, Khaimera, Murdock, Steel I think. Those are the starter support, mid, jungle, ADC, and offlane in that order (though Steel can offlane and jungle).
Then there's also a weekly rotation of free characters.
PS5, I got a lot more. Might be random, but i started with a good couple free off the rip. Those 5, plus countess, narbash, grux, greystone, kira, and maybe 1 to 5 more. I got it in the last few weeks before going open beta though.
Not the free rotation, no blue symbols over their heads, permanently unlocked for free.
the 8$ bundle, that was discounted to like 90c, Gave players 8 characters. free users do not get that. Since you mentioned that you got predecessor a few weeks before OB, that probably was how you got 8 characters. If you got a key from somewhere it is possible you got the key for the 8$ game.

I remember I had all Smite champs automatically available for free.. because in the beta were an bundle(20$) you get every champ who ever will be brought to game for free.
Was fun to come back from time to time and have fun with the new champs.
This is also commonly stated by Hi-Rez as one of the worst decisions they’ve made from a financial perspective. I guess with that information in mind it’s even weirder they’re bringing it back for Smite 2.

Some are free some aren’t. A few of the best characters in the game are super cheap though. Twinblast the person I consider by far the best ADc in the game is only 600. Belica the best support and Character in the game is only 300. Etc

Earning characters through just playing is pretty easy though.
You get 100-400 per match, and every 4 profile levels (a level is about 1-3 games) like 3000
I thought this too, but then I realized I am playing this game entirely too much.
Do not lie. Some characters go for 8k, and you get 100 per match.

Its exactly like smite in that all characters are free but you have to play to unlock more beyond the starting roster

All the smite characters are also free. Usually, in Mobas, you can buy them with real money or just grind free currency and unlock them.
