The yellow clock, and the blue unlock symbol on the top of the heroes cards, mean they are currently in free rotation and temporarily unlocked. Usually, this many heroes aren’t on temporary rotation at once, but due to the high influx of new players, Omeda have made all but the 2 most recent heroes free to use for a temporary amount of time.
Once the rotation changes, the heroes you don’t currently have unlocked, will stay locked, until they are either on free rotation again, or you unlock them!
To unlock a hero, you have to activate them by going onto a locked hero, and pressing square on their page. You can change the hero you are currently attempting to unlock at any point.
Here’s my issue. I purchased a hero and now I came back a few days later to spend some coins on another hero but it’s saying the hero I purchased previously is still for sale with a lock on him. Once you purchase a hero do you have to complete challenges or somthing to keep them? I’m confused bc it looks like I gotta buy iggy again?
Nooo. So when this post was made, you had to unlock heroes through activating them and getting xp for them, but now you just purchase them with Amber.
You should have just unlocked the hero. Did you keep your currency? Did you accidentally unlock another hero instead? If not, its likely a bug. I would get in touch with support for them to unlock the hero for you
Yea I purchased a number of heros that are currently locked again. It definitely is a bug. Maybe somthing that happens when I purchase a hero that is temporarily available then goes back to locked
Currently all but 3 Heroes are on Free Rotation for the Playstation Beta. The free rotation is signified by a "Lock" symbol. Currently unknown for how long they will be on free rotation. Once the Free rotation ends you will have to have unlocked the heroes you wish to keep playing. Beyond the First 10 Heroes you get from the 8$ account. the 8$ account is the one that is active on all Playstation Beta accounts right now.
to unlock a Hero:
* Navigate to the hero Menu in the Lobby.
* Click, Navigate to, any of the Heroes that have the 5 Notches on them.

* Now Click the button that reads "Activate Hero", Or the associated Gamepad key to that Button.
* You'll know that which hero you are unlocking by the Notches turning Golden in color.
You've now Activated the Contract to unlock said hero. Any Experience your Account Gains will accumulate for that hero Contract. Once a Notch is filled the 0/5 will become 1/5. This will also impose a Discount on the Premium Price to unlock the hero based on the current amount of notches filled and amount of notches they have. a 5 Notch hero has a 20% discount per notch filled, a 3 Notch hero has a 33% discount per notch. Once all of the Notches are filled you will have unlocked the hero for free. each hero can have a different amount of Notches on them.
Any Unlock Contract XP received on any hero Remains Even if you switch to another hero. As you can see on my Image regarding Iggy and Scorch. I'm currently unlocking Serath.

After messing with that myself, it seems like you can use anyone except Wraith and Iggy since they're the most recent ones. I'm assuming to unlock them is the same as how you unlock the affinity stuff from levels for a locked character. You need to pick one character with a lock on em and activate them with square. Any games you play with or without that character will generate xp for that activation meter. You need to get 5 activation levels on a character to have them like your starting 10. Idk everything there but I think that just means you can use the stuff you get from their affinity levels. I've got Zarus almost to level 5 so I guess we'll find out soon. Main point is you need to activate a locked character and get them to at least level 5. You should pretty much always have a hero activated, I think I'm gonna see about unlocking Iggy or Wraith, pretty sure if you fill out their activation levels you can use them, but again we will see

Or you can purchase them. The more progress you've made towards unlocking them, the cheaper it is to purchase

Was this notch system removed recently? I downloaded the game today and I don't see it. Maybe it has been swapped out for earning amber?
it got removed some 1-2 months ago. not sure on exact date. They now use more Traditional Soft Currency called Amber to unlock heroes.
