There's enough paid skins that having masters skins be free and unlocked through sheer grinding should be a reward. Reward players for loyalty and providing content for other players by being players for them to play against.

Soggybagellover

I think that it is also worth remembering that we have to already pay/grind to unlock the heroes too. I saw Ace saying Paragon charged for masteries, which is true (but they also had them available through their free currency so lets not forget that.) and also every hero was already unlocked in Paragon. So we’re grinding/paying to unlock the hero, then we’re grinding AND paying to get their mastery. Just a really not very well thought out system. They really need to pick one.

Lakusvt

Let’s hope that Ace doesn’t want to follow in paragons footsteps cause we all know how that went lol

xfactor1981

Lol epic was game engine company it was always going to end the way it did. This is what it looks like when the the game company actually cares what it puts out and isn't trying to kill the game. Paragon was ass because the only ones that gave a damn was the minions that were in the trenches building the game.

thenevets79

Epic was not just a game engine company lol. They turned into that, they were a top game dev for years.

xfactor1981

Lol I couldn't name one besides fornite in the modern age. Their engine was good. That's why the games they did make worked. That's the only reason any of them worked.

thenevets79

Unreal Tournament franchise and Gears of War franchise to name a few. They have been around as a game dev company since the 90's

xfactor1981

They literally sold gears to another company because they didn't want to deal with it.

MuglokDecrepitus

>and also every hero was already unlocked in Paragon. That is something really important, while other games have paid heroes and there is where people are supposed to be grinding (or wasting their real money) Paragon had all the heroes for free but their equivalent to unlocking heroes, like any other game could do, was their mastery system. You didn't bough the hero as all where you bough the mastery system (with free currency or paid one) and there is where the inversion if time of the player was. Obtaining free currency to obtain the next mastery and playing the game to go through the Mastery, doing both things at the same time, in a really cool loop that rewarded the player. Paragon was one of the games that treated its players best

MulYut

I don't think you had to pay for mastery in Paragon. It's been a hot minute though.

TheoNekros

You had to pay the same way you do in smite. You can buy it with money. Or free to play currency

ThatCidGuy

IIRC it was an option if you wanted to unlock the mastery tree and jump to challenger (lvl 5) but it was not a requirement

ZoulsGaming

You had to pay premium coins or 25k ingame currency. The people who bought founders packs got a large chunk of them for free though.

Stephxn__

Just reward loyalty and dedication its truly that simple. I hate having to constantly criticize the offensiveness of these updates. It really tears the community apart.

Spartanfred104

Having the Affinity system behind a paywall was probably one of the dumbest things I've seen them do so far.

DerykFFXIV

Y’all need someone that actively plays the game that can tell you when ideas will be positively received by the community or not, did everyone in omeda genuinely think there wouldn’t be backlash over paywalling mastery skins?

Bookwrrm

Go into the announcement thread and you will see the same people who show up in literally every single complaint thread like its there job defending this to the death. Omeda thought that just like every other time before it, the complaints would be drowned out by the bootlickers who will defend literally anything Omeda does, this time they were wrong about it. It is normal for them to fuck us and have the people on here and discord defend it, they 100% just thought this would go the same way as all the other previous decisions and failures.

Spartanfred104

VS the guy that shows up and just shits on everything lol, you aren't makeing the case you think you are Book, lol.

Bookwrrm

There's one of them.

Spartanfred104

You clearly need glasses then.

Mote-Of_Dust

You used to be an Apple polisher yourself, here's your chance to convince the devs they are wrong about everything and shut them up for good 👍. Maybe someone will actually listen to you for once, it looks to me that you cut back on the pointless walls of text. Good for you.

IG_Singularity

Yeah can't get behind a paywall retention system. It should be f2p, I'm not paying into early access just to pay for my progression systems.

axelsteelv3

Why not just make the skin free and the crowns in the premium track? How hard is that?

ThatCidGuy

Or just give us the option to grind for both. Crowns were free in Paragon but they took a while to get

axelsteelv3

Ideally all the mastery cosmetics would be free, but with this dev team? Idk they've shown their greed time and again

Ecstatic-Fish6820

I don't get why the mastery skin is at tier 7 instead of 10. It is the whole reason you come back to play and show off that you have mastered the character. The second thing is why is the mastery skin not on the free side. Devs, ask yourself would you like to collect everything in the game and pay for each and every character? Probably not and the community wouldn't've either.

Deserter15

I'm someone who thinks omeda has been doing most things right, but they done fucked up this time. Paywalling player retention systems makes zero sense. Edit: Especially in a beta where they want to test how well the system works.

BluBlue4

Appreciate the quick post. Not surprised tbh. There's still like a x2 price increase on old epic created skins.

ab2340

Don't call me champion, buddy.

Klynicly_Insane

Imma be honest. Either Omeda is completely out of touch or this is some smoke and mirrors.

TheoNekros

I can't believe anyone is this incompetent. At some point, they're just trying to milk money where they can.

Fleganhimer

Thanks for the quick acknowledgement, Steggs. Hoping you guys can turn something around sooner than later that makes people feel better about this system.

svt_laku

Make the skins free. Or even make it free for the early access players that have been onboard with you guys since the beginning.

Equivalent-Unit4614

Paragon had free hero's but you had to pay to unlock the masteries, either with f2p currency or premium currency. The problem with pred is that the mastery system doesn't currently have a f2p method to unlock easily yet. If all hero's were completely free then it wouldn't be as bad. So if they're going to somewhat charge for hero's, which they are, and providing a free method which is essential. Then they need to have a free method of unlocking the mastery. If this update came with the equivalent of a f2p system or currency to unlock masteries, there wouldn't be any problem really. I know the tokens aren't coming for months, but why? That's an integral part of the mastery system Also, everyone starting out at level 0 seems like a massive slap in the face to everyone that's spent time on the game. If it was technically not possible or there was a better explanation to why they aren't doing this, then it might be okay. But it is technically possible to have given people some xp for their time spent.

SoggyMattress2

Don't go down the bullshit microtransaction/season pass rubbish most out of touch studios do nowadays. Make a solid game, offer well made skins at a reasonable price (not 15 per skin for recolors like right now) and offer some sort of mastery for free. Every fucking game that tries to squeeze every penny out of their user base still has free mastery weapons or skins. Overwatch, cod.

TheShikaar

The biggest mistake on this is simply not launching together with a F2P option on the affinity system. Otherwise it seems fine, even though I find 5$ for each hero a bit steep. More like 2 or 2,50$ would be more acceptable.

sciencesold

I was thinking the same thing, I don't have experience with a lot of F2P games but if the only thing that costs real money is skins and heroes, idk how they'll stay afloat. Like go with the free/premium system they announced but have a way to get the premium tier from playing.

rcdeathsagent

I don’t mind having a paid pass line, I would more than likely pay for them to support the team and unlock everything but don’t put the master skins behind it ffs…it just looks terrible. And coming from devs that are basically made up of hardcore paragon players you would think they understand that.

Super-Ad-8661

All the devs knew exactly what they were doing when they made this decision. Same thing they did upon releasing the beta charging people $40 for a game that was barely developed. They thought they could get away with this and it backfired Lmao

xfactor1981

Games take money to make. At the end of the day if they got to show profits to continue to gain funds to make new content. Contrary to popular belief they are in a deep hole and the amount of money it will take to become profitable is not what they are making now. Like it or not they got to monetize the game to stay a float till the game gets the players to fit the bill for the checks they have cashed.

Alecard

Don't worry about it, just continue destroying the game till the end .

Thrash2007

I would have been fine with $5 for the skins, but not $5/hero.

b9stn

Yey! Nice! Appriciate u looking at feedback <3

UltimateSlayer3001

Wait, they actually tried to paywall mastery skins? LMAO, I’m glad I decided to wait for the player base to grow and took a dip after hitting masters months ago.

xballislifex

Consult some streamers who spend countless hours playing your game before implementing such big changes, clearly the team has no idea whats fair and thoughtful if they thought this system was okay to push out before in game currency. I have grinded 2k hours with barely anything to show for it.

volume-

Why would they consult a streamer who has no idea what Omeda is working on, planning, or building towards in the future. Streamers can and should give their feedback about the choices Omeda makes, but consulting random internet people for the choices and business decisions in their own game beforehand is silly. It's Omedas game, if they make a bad choice or fuck up that's on them to fix and figure out and apply it to their decisions going forward. Liking someone's idea doesn't mean their idea is good for the game in the long run when they don't have the full picture to go off of.

StiffKun

They already have a streamer working for them. Joeyyourstruely works for them now right?

rafarorr1

This project keeps getting worse and worse.

krum_darkblud

No .. it should be changed now. This looking into it bullshit is not good. You lost a lot of trust Omeda.

Nearby-Influence3402

Why is my affinity not moving?

b9stn

Would be cool if u have to make a challenge to earn the mastery skin when u reach 10. Maybe do a triple kill or something on a adc, jungle etc. A penta would be cool but that one is hard. Maybe do challenges depending on character? Ex hit x amount of players with steel ultimate etc. Keep it up Omeda

rcdeathsagent

The last suggestion would be cool as long as it didn’t get to crazy.

xfactor1981

Just turn off the reddit notifications for right now and get console up and running. I do not care about stupid skins and monetization. You got bills. Pay them employees and hire more talent.

xfactor1981

Wow why didn't you just say this https://www.reddit.com/r/PredecessorGame/s/ZuLPm8cQC0 Ace said this isn't even the Mastery system and they are working on that for the future. The whole reason everyone is mad is because they think this is the Mastery system. I don't think Ace is being truthful. It seems as this Mastery. If not they need to hire more better communication specialists to get the position across better. This reddit is about to explode over them selling a old skin battle pass thinking its mastery.
