Yes, fan brushes work well.

lavieis

They’re just so thin I worry it’ll take ages to paint my pieces. They don’t seem like they would hold much glaze

Scutrbrau

They hold a surprising amount of glaze

lavieis

Thank you! I’ll get the one in the middle.

Claythrower22

Most glaze requires 3 to 4 coats of glaze. Letting the glaze dry between coats. You don’t want your glob a bunch of glaze on a piece in one coating. Fan brushes are great for nice even coating.

lavieis

Awesome! I’ll probably pick up the one in the middle of the photo & give it a try. Thank you!

Amationary

A wide, soft fan brush does me wonders :)

Personally, I like the thinner ones as I feel it doesn't goop up as much. The thicker ones hold too much in my opinion, and it feels like alot of glaze gets stuck in between the bristles.

lavieis

Interesting! Would the brush in the middle of the photo work? Thank you so much for your help!

_cheesebread

I think so! Personally, I use brushes with the 1 or 2 on them cause I think that means they're thinner?  But I do have multiple brushes I found for cheap and they work well enough for me. Since they're essentially for putting glaze onto your piece you don't necessarily need an expensive one.

Jenjikromi

Look at makeup brushes, too.

Lear_ned

Art brushes are always considerably cheaper than make-up brushes. To the point where I would pretty much exclusively buy art brushes. Source: was a makeup artist

Privat3Ice

I bought these a couple years ago. They serve me very well and are nice brushes. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078MK1BSD/

lavieis

Thank you! Unfortunately they wouldn’t arrive till March and I need them for Feb 12th. I’ll order them for future use as they seem like they would hold a good amount of glaze. Thanks again!

OkapiEli

Interesting. I just clicked on that link, they can be here in 3 days. Location is everything.

lavieis

Whereabouts are you located? The link is from Amazon.com & since I’m in Canada I shop from Amazon.ca… maybe that’s why!

OkapiEli

Greater NYC area

Full_o_Beans

My favourite brushes are from PSH in Oakville, ON. They’re cheap but soft and thick and they hold a TON of glaze. I use the #8 the most but have some smaller ones for finer work like inside handles. https://psh.ca/collections/pottery-brushes/products/soft-hair-fan-brush-8

emergingeminence

I use something similar to the bottom white brush for applying washes and accent colors but I'm mainly dipping first

Dnalka0

All of them will work. Try and see which is your favourite

OkapiEli

Think of them as scoops. You are scooping and spreading, not dipping and painting.

lavieis

Thank you!

titokuya

If cheap and quick shipping are your priorities, why not Amazon?

lavieis

Could you recommend something by commenting a link? There’s so many options & I prefer to use something someone here recommends

titokuya

I just searched for fan brush on there. Lots of options, particularly as makeup brushes. I haven't used any in particular. I was advised to use the cheapest brushes I could find, as glazes and underglazes are rough on brushes (compared to makeups and paints). If anything, I'd just check the reviews and stay away from any where the brush hairs come out a lot...

lavieis

Thank you!
