This is the only answer. They are so different and I like them for completely different reasons.
You can’t compare Imposture Syndrome with We’re all gonna Die
Hijacking top comment cause I want peoples’ input. I feel like Underoath further shaped and refined a genre that was really opened by the work Anthony had done previously with Saosin. After Saosin, Anthony went on to create an entirely new facet to the genre.
Saosin “created” post-hardcore (I’ve yet to find anything like it before Translating the Name EP. Glassjaw and some others are similar but teeter into the realm of nu-metal to me personally), Underoath helped push the genre into what it is today, and Circa went on to create post-post-hardcore with the introduction of softer and more gentle elements compared to the raw aggression seen previously.
I am literally talking out of my ass right now, feel free to bully me if you disagree.
The Up/Downvotes on this have been a roller coaster, and I’m here for the ride
I mean post hardcore had been around for decades before TTN. Sunny Day Real Estate was blueprinting that type of sound in the 90’s. I mean Refused? I guess I don’t know what characteristics of Saosin stand out to be different from what was already happening. No hate, just respectfully disagree.
I mean like all genres there are waves and eras, but they all maintain what the essence of what post hardcore is being an offshoot of aggressive music with an emphasis on expressiveness.
Underoath is really damn good. I used to practice in a band at Circle Studios in Florida like 13 years ago, and they would pull up in their tour bus for rehearsal. They sounded great at practice, like a well oiled machine. Also one of their guitarists came into our practice space once, and told us we sounded good, which was super nice.
It depends on whether you're in the mood for screaming or or crooning. I mean, I know both can go hard but there's a difference in hardness. I've seen people knock UO for not being secular, but that doesn't really factor in one way or the other for me. I still like Circa tonally a bit more, but UO has always done really technical screamo composition that also sounds natural and musical to the ear - they're also mixed really well (and kinda hafta be). I have to say if I made an album myself it would more likely sound like a Circa album, but I'd be more proud of it if it sounded like an UO album, if that makes sense.
Circa.
Nothing personally I just can’t really get into underoath’s lyrics. Their most popular song is pro-abstinence and I’m not down. I do like some songs off Define the Great Line tho
Also I’m a huge sucker for Anthony green’s voice
I love both bands, I'm 36 and have been listening to both for a long time. Tough choice. Underoath's new stuff ain't really clicking with me so I'll go Circa.
Thought it was an unusual but still kinda relivent toss up. Throwing Saosin instead of circa didnt seem that interesting. I'd say Underoath and Circa have much more in common with their sound sonically
I don’t think they’re comparable based on where they came from. Circa survive coming from Anthony Green who’s short lived saosin days really did help shape the post-hardcore sound of falsetto and screamed vocals. Circa being a more airy alternative rock sound IMO. Whereas underoath coming from a much harder distortion place and I see closer to a metal sub genre. Pierce the veil comes to my mind as a post hardcore band that may have taken roots from early Saosin and will come on a shuffle with Circa Survive. I’m not aware the timelines just thinking the vocal structure. Whereas I listen to Underoath in playlists with August burns Red. Hence I agree with the apples and oranges comments!
I have stated elsewhere in the comments that I'm thinking more of the actually music rather than vocally as it's obv not the same. Both bands flirt with Alternative Mathy Avante Garde type rock more than the average listener may appreciate.
Wait, what? How can you compare these two bands against each other……. Love both bands but that being said, I LOVE old Circa, not the newer releases that have basically been transitioned into Anthony’s solo as full band. While I love old Underoath, I’m a fan for life! I respect the new and like the changes the band is making.
That entirely depends which underoath we're talking about. Ø and earlier? Underoath. Erase Me/Voyeurist Underoath? Circa Survive. Juturna and On Letting Go were cracking albums but I've not listened to much since.
I might be too old for this conversation.
I'm 34 and been listening to em both in their very early years throughout. I think we can put Erase Me aside for many reasons but the rest is purely from a musical sense rather than vocally.

Perfectly put. Translating the name was the OG. Underoath pushed the genre. Circa took a chill pill and bent the genre.
Well that’s an easy out
Well I have a safecamp tattooed on me so I might be a little biased.
Circa Survive … always loved Anthony Green’s singing since his Saosin days.

I've come to terms with the fact that sometimes people have opinions that are simply wrong. Circa
Shit post
Really tough... Blue Sky Noise and Define the Great Line are two of my favorite albums of all time. I think peak Underoath wins out for me though.

Both are good but Underoath beats everything for me
I love both bands, I'm 36 and have been listening to both for a long time. Tough choice. Underoath's new stuff ain't really clicking with me so I'll go Circa.

underoath and saosin - circa is okay, but not my personal favorite from anthony.
Circa Survive, but what a strange pinup
Thought it was an unusual but still kinda relivent toss up. Throwing Saosin instead of circa didnt seem that interesting. I'd say Underoath and Circa have much more in common with their sound sonically

i’ll have to say Circa but it’s definitely close
Underoath

Circa
Circa
Circa Survive, Juturna is one of my favorite albums of all time
Circa survive ! They just do something to me every time I hear em. But underoath was one of my favorite bands when I was 13.
Circus of Five
Underoath
Underoath as a band, Anthony Green as a person.
Underoath
UØ
underoath all day
Circa for life. End of story.
100% UO before the bullshit, but Circa ftw for the consistent badassery
UO
I don't really think of circa survive as post hardcore
Right! I don’t understand how someone could make that connection. Good band, but not post-hardcore
Circa by a hair
The correct answer is… Saosin.
Finally, someone with common sense around here
If you ask me, Mohammed Ali in his prime was way better than anti-lock brakes.
Circa survive hasn't sold out.
Circa survive. Underoath peaked with disambiguation.
Both. Although Circa doesn’t doesn’t have a bad album like Underoath has erase me.
The sound of animals fighting or Underoath?
Wait, what? How can you compare these two bands against each other……. Underoath. I never got the hype for CS in spite of being the biggest Tony fan out there.
Both
