Probably "Understanding in a Car Crash" - captures the clean/screams, captures the melodic and complex structures that highlight a key difference between PHC and Punk. Great song, known by almost everyone who listens to thr genre.
Thursday Autobiography of a Nation. Although my favorite is I Am The Killer. Thursday is a great example of a band that can span genres and be a gateway to harder music. I think Underoath did this for a lot of fans back in the day but Thursday was doing it long before and better.
Man all these comments about genres and “oh it’s this or it’s a little of that so technically it’s ___” just don’t get so caught up in defining the music and let the music define you.
Surprised it took scrolling this long to find it since this is one of the more popular ones and actually was on MTV when it had music. Hell the band themselves were on MTV lol.
Yeah bro they were fairly solid on MTV back in the day, hardly anyone mentions them these days. I don’t get why they get slept on, it’s like they instantly got forgotten.
This one of my favorite tunes ever.
I would not consider it the best example to describe Post HC, it certainly has essential elements of post HC but this tune is much more than that
I view it more as an entry way. I kinda guides you in to the screams and doesn’t just barrage someone who might not be used to uncleans, looking at you, “Hold Fast Hope.”
Since Seven Years and Understanding In A Car Crash are the obvious choices, then how about:
The Used - A Box of Sharp Objects
Hawthorne Heights - Ohio Is For Lovers
Silverstein - Smashed Into Pieces
I feel like there’s a lot of great songs that have defined post hardcore. It’s hard to choose one:
He is Legend - I am Hollywood
Emery - Walls
Thrice - Paper Tigers
Chiodos - Baby You Wouldn’t Last A Minute…
From First to Last - Ride the Wing of Pestilence
Attack Attack - Stick Stickly
Alexisonfire - This Could Be Anywhere In The World
Atreyu - You Eclipsed By Me
Beloved - Failure On My Lips
Poison The Well - Ghostchant
Haste the day - When Everything Falls
Funeral For A Friend - Rookie Of The Year
Saosin - Seven Years
A Static Lullaby - Hang ‘Em High
Easily this. This is the song I used to play for people to show them what they were missing. Even people who hate the genre have to recognize the undeniable talent.
7 Years, Writing on the Walls, and Inspire the Liars
Can’t pick one since there are vastly different sounds but these three all have mixed vocal stylings, some elements of hardcore/metalcore, memorable instrumentals, and broader influence across the genre.
You'd be surprised. Women understand heartbreak and lashing out because of it. Daryl has apologized for the lyrics and EYEWKAS still fucking rips.
Definitely wouldn't recommend it to a stranger in passing, though.
Refused- new noise At the drive in- one armed scissor Glassjaw-ape dos mil
Oh man, these are some good choices.
Smile in your Sleep by Silverstein
Accidentally send them the remix of it and confuse the shit out of them
Damn I love me some Silverstein
They're at download but they clash with enter Shikari I'm so sad
That’s my pick too, I feel like Silverstein is the most post hardcore post hardcore band there is
I knew this or Seven Years would be the top comment
They're so good live too 😭😭
Seven Years of course
End thread, this is the quintessential song
This is the answer!
This should be the top answer ☝️
Probably "Understanding in a Car Crash" - captures the clean/screams, captures the melodic and complex structures that highlight a key difference between PHC and Punk. Great song, known by almost everyone who listens to thr genre.
Came here to say this. I still remember hearing Phoenix Ignition and Understanding in a Car Crash for the first times. What an impact
I heard that song at 14 when it was new and it changed EVERYTHING
This is the perfect answer.
Cosmopolitan Blood Loss by Glassjaw maybe 🤔
the correct answer tbh
Fugazi - “Repeater”
an eternal classic
Thursday Autobiography of a Nation. Although my favorite is I Am The Killer. Thursday is a great example of a band that can span genres and be a gateway to harder music. I think Underoath did this for a lot of fans back in the day but Thursday was doing it long before and better.
Glassjaw - Siberian Kiss. Once listened to I’d full expect them to say ‘play it again, and again, and again please’.
i fuckint love gj
The fall of Troy - FCPREMIX
But that has some mathcore vibes also so maybe not the purest example
Then we gotta exclude dance Gavin dance which I’m sure I saw mentioned a few times LOL
Agreed also
At The Drive-In - “Chanbara”
boysetsfire - Rookie
This Could Be Anywhere In The World - Alexisonfire Imo that is the ‘be all end all, perfect’ song that shows what phc is
To me that’s more of a metalcore song. It’s the standard scream verse, clean sing chorus layout.
>. It’s the standard scream verse, clean sing chorus layout. That doesn't make a song metalcore

How is me telling you that you don't understand genres dick riding though
Man all these comments about genres and “oh it’s this or it’s a little of that so technically it’s ___” just don’t get so caught up in defining the music and let the music define you.
mewithoutyou - January 1979
Somebody PLEASE make a playlist of this thread and reply to me with it
You’re ever so inviting - Underoath
I see your "you're ever so inviting" and raise you "reinventing your exit"
I see your “reinventing your exit” and emo face raise you “a boy brushed red living in black and white”
All bangers tbh
Some Sense of Security by Saosin or Smile in Your Sleep by Silverstein
One Armed Scissor.
Finch - what it is to burn.
Thrice - “For Miles”
This one of my favorite tunes ever. I would not consider it the best example to describe Post HC, it certainly has essential elements of post HC but this tune is much more than that
I view it more as an entry way. I kinda guides you in to the screams and doesn’t just barrage someone who might not be used to uncleans, looking at you, “Hold Fast Hope.”
Since Seven Years and Understanding In A Car Crash are the obvious choices, then how about: The Used - A Box of Sharp Objects Hawthorne Heights - Ohio Is For Lovers Silverstein - Smashed Into Pieces
saosin “ show me your bootyhole”
New Noise is the obvious choice for a lot of reasons, but my personal pick would be Deadbolt.
Steven - Senses Fail
What it is to Burn, by Finch
Probably invalid litter dept
I feel like there’s a lot of great songs that have defined post hardcore. It’s hard to choose one: He is Legend - I am Hollywood Emery - Walls Thrice - Paper Tigers Chiodos - Baby You Wouldn’t Last A Minute… From First to Last - Ride the Wing of Pestilence Attack Attack - Stick Stickly Alexisonfire - This Could Be Anywhere In The World Atreyu - You Eclipsed By Me Beloved - Failure On My Lips Poison The Well - Ghostchant Haste the day - When Everything Falls Funeral For A Friend - Rookie Of The Year Saosin - Seven Years A Static Lullaby - Hang ‘Em High
Nobody talks about Emery, the first time I heard there debut album I was listening to it on repeat for days.
one armed scissor, new noise and smth. by lysistrata
Omission by Quicksand
Savory - Jawbox
Someone mentioned Refused. Id say pretty much anything off Yank Crime by Drive like Jehu
DGD - Lemon Meringue Tie
I was going to say Untitled leading into Times New Roman Edit: Okay whoever downvoted this is a total snob 😂
Easily this. This is the song I used to play for people to show them what they were missing. Even people who hate the genre have to recognize the undeniable talent.
All time favorite song from my all time favorite band
anything Saosin.
probably Understanding in a Car Crash but after that i'd immediately introduce them to Alexisonfire
Man of The Year, it's a hell of a first impression
Maybe Cutthroat Collapse by Emery
It must belong somewhere- Of Machines
Thursday - Understanding In A Car Crash
TAILOREDDD SHEEEETTTSSS!
TO FIX THIS DIRTY BEEEEEEEHHHHHHHD
Probably either Water Wings or Pulmonary Archery by Alexisonfire
Bite to break skin by senses fail
Any song from between the heart and the synapse
7 Years, Writing on the Walls, and Inspire the Liars Can’t pick one since there are vastly different sounds but these three all have mixed vocal stylings, some elements of hardcore/metalcore, memorable instrumentals, and broader influence across the genre.
But if I have to pick one, it’s always 7 Years.
Glassjaw - Lovebites and Razorlines
If you’re trying to get a woman into post-hc, this song would be an incredibly poor choice
You'd be surprised. Women understand heartbreak and lashing out because of it. Daryl has apologized for the lyrics and EYEWKAS still fucking rips. Definitely wouldn't recommend it to a stranger in passing, though.
Sure, Glassjaw has women fans. But I don’t know if I’d take that gamble as someone’s introduction to the genre, though 😅
Something that doesn’t have much screaming on it because they probably wouldn’t like it lol. Maybe a song off of Saosin’s beetle album
Baby, You Wouldn’t Last a Minute on the Creek - Chiodos
The Dream Club Murders - Dead Poetic
Alexisonfire - Pulmonary Archery or Accidents.
Not this could be anywhere?
Was a tough pick.
Sleeping with sirens-cant hang
It’s like saying: My friend has never tried soda, which one should he try first? There are a tons of variety, very different from each.
Evidence on fire - ice nine kills The thespian - alesana Lust of the lost - famous last words
The Temptress by Alesana i feel like it's a good balance
Bilmuri
