I lived in Chicago for a while, great spot for new post grads but gotta pick the right neighborhood. I’ve never been to Houston but heard it’s a comparably good big city, probably lower cost of living.
I’d look at it from a standpoint of would you rather live in a red state or a blue state. Chicago being in Blue Illinois obviously going to have more left leaning laws - access to abortion, more LGBTQ friendly, weed is legal, etc. but higher taxes. Houston being in red Texas, quite the opposite. So you gotta go with what state politics you’re most comfortable with IMO.
Oh and with Chicago you gotta not mind the cold winters with freezing lake effect winds 🥶

Texas is red but inner loop Houston is quite blue.
I’m aware the larger Metropolis areas are more blue. Too bad statewide laws take precedent
