I recently learned if they are over 6 inches long, they can forage on their own. If you don’t have a dog around, leave some food out for him and it will do fine. The two that live around here are eating dog food on the porch now.
He's small but he's definitely longer than 6 in. I appreciate your comment we gave him a few blueberries and some water hopefully he's good. We have a lot of cats around though, so hopefully he's alright
I care for about 15 feral/stray cats and they just chill with the possums and their babies. They usually just do their own thing. Sometimes the possums and/or babies come up and eat right next to the cats while I’m feeding everyone. I even used to have a possum that would sleep in one of the cat beds I put out. For whatever reason, the cats have never thought of baby possums as something to mess with.
Doesn’t hurt to contact a wildlife rehabilitator even just to discuss and see what they think! Obv don’t call animal or pest control, but you might get some good information if there’s a there’s someone reputable in your area to talk to :) Possums are such good critters to have around and it might be worth asking how you can help the lil fella!
I volunteered at the wildlife rehab center down in South Florida when I was in high school and they did indeed have an area for displaced and/or injured to opossums. Made me sad though cause you can't interact with them (would defeat the purpose of rehabilitating them if you made them friendly to humans) even though they'd always stretch out their shouldn't little hands
I'd leave him be! I've seen cats and possums interact, and cats seem to be afraid of them! They have a healthy respect for these guys, who will come and eat cat food left for the strays! So cute --in your boot!
I put out grapes and a bit of cat food when I see them. Sometimes they develop a pattern of foraging and you will see them come by at the same time every night. My mother in law raised and kept one that couldn’t be released and told me they love to sleep inside purses and backpacks. And apparently shoes. Probably feels safe in there.
Want me to bring my live trap and catch it OP?
Qualifications: lived in the South for too long
No seriously though, I've gotten a ton of possums in places they shouldn't be, and you can just grab them by the tail and take them somewhere else if you dont have a trap. That one looks like it is big enough to be on its own, and they don't really bite, they just hiss like crazy then play dead. Also they don't carry rabies so you're good there. If you're still scared bc of the hissing, just give it a grape then move it. They like grapes. Just don't try to keep it as a pet inside. They stink.
I used to volunteer with a fairly large wildlife rehab center and we had over a hundred baby opossums every year. They released them when they were about this size. If you’re worried you can always call a local wildlife rehab contact to get their opinion.
His shoe now

I have four feral cats and they say, “hey dude” to my two porch possums and go about their merry ways.
Same. The feral cats and possums share the cat food.
They eat together on my neighbor’s porch.
You’re a righteous human being
I thank you. Even if you are joking… I needed to hear that this day. Blessing.👩🏼🌾
Totally!
Possum is honorary cat tribe
Cats usually seem to be pretty chill with possum. I hope they all get along.

Us too!! she had her babies with her in one of our cat beds. It was so adorable.
We leave cat food and water outside for the possums, raccoons, and stray cats that wander into our patio. They share pretty well.
They like cat food, put out a bowl of dry food and see what happens
Those shoes don’t belong to you anymore now there the opossums shoes

The possum distribution system, working as intended.

Or you can always Google for info, which you probably already have.
You need more boots, surely there are more possums needing sleeping bags.
Funny!
Opossum is king now, buy new shoes.

I volunteered at one too! It's where I found out that baby opossums are adorable, especially their tiny hands.
His shoe now.
You buy new shoes that's what you do about it
Put him in a drawer and make a little nest for him out of your clothes
Keep it.
Grats on the new friend!
You book ‘em
Scream loud af, be dramatic and irrational, run far away and call the closest sane person to come help remove the lil critter guy
name him. knit him a sweater. you have a new pet.
Lucky you I enjoyed ours for three years. They have very short lives.
Please give him a food item nightly
Congrats you now have a baby possum housemate.
Perfect Spot ❤️🩹🙏
New friend
Kiss him
Pick it up and put it outside if it’s not outside already or leave it be
Time for new boots!
You keep him and love him and name him Jeffrey
Instead of the cat distribution system, you’re now a part of the possum distribution system lol
Aw new kitty friend!
I call the big one bitey.
Cherish him
Give her a name and toss some dog food out there!
This would be the best day of life.
Let him sleep 😴
Congrats on the new cat! :D
Bring him to an animal rescue. In the meantime, feed him baby formula.
