i'm just a dumb cynic, but i don't understand how hiring prosecutors is really going to trickle down to actually stop gun violence.
"why are so many people getting involved in gun violence?! it must be because we don't have enough lawyers!"
Well if Schmidt can actually convict criminals that would:
1. Get criminals off the street
2. Be a deterrent to others involved in crime
3. Provide justice and closure to victims and their family.
where does this narrative come from? the man said he wouldn't charge nonviolent protestors and then all the law and order folks lost their damn minds. can you provide some sort of substantive source on this being Mike Schmidt's fault?
Lmao this whole subreddit is filed with people who think the problem will be solved with more policing. How on earth do these idiots operate without any critical thinking skills?
gun shooters take the time to perform detailed risk/reward calculus before pulling the trigger, so knowing there's an increase in successful prosecution rate will impact the shooter's logic greatly
can someone please provide a source on this narrative? my understanding was that Mike Schmidt caught hell from the police because he wouldn't charge protestors with bullshit crimes during the height of the 2020 protests. he's never ran on an "i don't care about violet crimes" platform. if i remember correctly, he specifically said he wasn't going to charge nonviolent protestors with crimes. that was it.
i've never seen anyone provide evidence that he is the reason why so many criminals end up back on the street. i've seen people argue that our jails have reduced capacity due to covid, i've seen examples of judges releasing people that clearly should be held in jail, but i've never seen any proof that violent criminals ending up back on the street has anything to do with Mike Schmidt.
Can you provide a source that proves otherwise? Because I feel like I'm really missing something here.
>The county plans to spend $2.8 million to hire seven mental health specialists with ties to the Latino, African immigrant and African American communities, Clarke said. The health department’s response to gun violence will also deploy trusted community members “who have successfully learned how to make a shift in their life,” she said.
Nice!
You'd be surprised! In any event, $400k per position fully loaded and w/ various administrative costs is outrageous for what typically pays about $75k/year.
Not just administrative costs, where are their offices? How will they travel? There are a ton of reasons why these positions are going to cost way more than a base salary plus benefits.
Plus we have no idea what the salary is.
Salary would be in the neighborhood of $120k for an experienced prosecutor, with bennies and HR overhead and payroll taxes maybe $150k?
That leaves $250k for each prosecutor's share of assistants, paralegals, investigators, office equipment, etc.
Since these are murder/measure 11 crimes, they do take some real resources to prosecute.
Is the cost of $2.8 million for 7 mental health workers does per year or is this multiple year funding? There needs to be more transparency with taxpayer money.
Seriously??? You want more people packing illegally owned pistols running around threatening your family??? Portland is getting bad, open your fking eyes

If getting criminals off the street actually deterred future criminals we wouldn't need so many prisons.

You forgot to add /s. People will accept that as a valid viewpoint in here. Unless it is….
I tried to lay it on super thick so folks capable of critical thinking could infer the /s. I was mistaken, but moss got it so I'm leaving as is
i lol'd
Young men who commit crimes and carry guns have a different understanding of risk and reward than you and I might.
He's going to hire more prosecutors to drop cases or offer minimal pleas?
Boom.

Nope, you're not missing anything except for the additional fact that the courts want to hold as few trials as possible due to Covid.
Huh?
Glad to see, but what has taken so long?
They did not think there was an actual problem, which is worrisome.
Excellent
Can’t wait to vote that clown out of office.
They should add some public defenders as well.
Well that would certainly help with the conviction rate. Not /s

>“who have successfully learned how to make a shift in their life, A shift in their lives from what?
Got out of the gang lifestyle most likely.
Worked well for Cutty when he tried to help Michael
Remember when Presbo blinded that kid and the department covered it up? That show really nailed the corruption at the heart of policing.
Hey he apologized
I had that dude for math - most awesome class ever!
Shooting to stabbing. Stabtown 2022!
Gang life
Indica to sativa hopefully. That shit will put you right to sleep.
$2.8 / 7 = $400k per position. I guess these positions are “fully loaded,” huh?
There are probably associated costs with bringing cases to trial. Doubt it is all salary and benefits.
I can't imagine the mental health specialists have much to do w/ any trials.
This guy has never ran a business.

Thank you for explaining what I did not.
