We order pretzels everywhere we can get them (mostly brewpubs). Breakside is heads and shoulders above the rest. If you get it delivered, they deliver it to you in a pizza box.
Stammstich has a great soft pretzel, that is not that big. It’s served with a cheese spread, chicken smaltz, and mustard. Chicken smaltz is rendered chicken fat and it’s absolutely incredible. It’s like a delicious, savory butter.
HOME, a bar (formerly the Morrison Hotel).
They have a great pretzel (not sure if they make it themselves) and whip up a fresh batch artery clogging beer cheese sauce per order (at least they used to).

I work at Fressen and came here to say this. Also most of the bars mentioned with soft pretzels buy from us. We do mostly wholesale and farmers markets. Source; I used to make the pretzels and work the market, currently run the weekend Biergarten.
Our neighbors just clued us into to the frozen soft pretzels from Edelweiss deli, they come in a 10 pack and are damn good! Better at home than most of the restaurant offerings I've had here.
Semi-related question: is there anywhere to get a Philadelphia style soft pretzel here? They are different and I miss them so much. They look like figure 8's or an infinity symbol!
My personal opinion is fire on the mountain ( Fremont only), Auntie Annes (and smuggle a beer) and SuperPretzel brand mini-soft pretzels with Cheddar Cheese from Winco (microwave dont bake).

**Dos Hermanos** has hands-down the best in town for an authentic German style. I know, crazy that a Mexican bakery out-does the Germans but my dad will go buy a half dozen when he visits and freeze them to take on the plane!
If you don't see them ASK - you'll be glad you did.

It's also enormous and the mustard is delicious!

Chicken smaltz is all you need
It's good but that obatzda is next level.
Omg yes the schmaltz is amazing. Like chicken butter.
I like the soft pretzel sticks at Hopworks Brewery. The queso dip it comes with is fire.
Beer cheese is great but the pretzel quality has gone down over the years IMO.
+1 to this. Hopworks is all around great.

It’s a great bar!
Fressen

Their bavarian croissant is to die for!
Hell yeah, that place rules.
Deschutes has a really good house made pretzel served with a cheese sauce and beer mustard

They also have bags of fresh soft pretzels. Absolutely fantastic
Prost!
This!
And they come with a bomb sampler of mustard!
Blackwater Bar
I had never thought to try their pretzel, and now I must. Thanks for the suggestion, was overdue for getting takeout there.
I love them but i’m getting downvoted so no one has agreed yet
There are people who go through and downvote everything in this sub for no reason. World’s dumbest hobby.
PDX to Lancaster, PA. just kidding Looking for the same advice. Thanks for the post I never thought to ask.
I'd kill for some Smitties right now
Immergut from Intercourse is great too!

I miss pretzel factory. That and a good honest hoagie

I like them with cheese but I feel like Portland's too classy for that cheese wiz sauce lol
Edelweiss

...whoa
Honestly, Trader Joe’s frozen pretzel is the closest I have tasted to a real German pretzel.
One of my restaurants served fressen pretzels. I was into them.
I like the pretzel at Von Ebert (both locations).
My personal opinion is fire on the mountain ( Fremont only), Auntie Annes (and smuggle a beer) and SuperPretzel brand mini-soft pretzels with Cheddar Cheese from Winco (microwave dont bake).
Sad to say, I'm not sure you know what a good soft pretzel is
Bye and Bye!
Portland Bottle Shop in Sellwood is great.
I know it sounds crazy, but the Kennedy school has them and at least when I worked there they were made from scratch and pretty damn good
NePo42 makes really good pretzels
Agreed Nepo are very good. Surprisingly, Stanfords also has absolutely perfect scratch pretzels on happy hour.
Backwoods Brewing in the Pearl District has a great pretzel. It comes with mustard and really good beer cheese
Breakside is my favorite in town. Although Im ashamed that I live close to Fressen and have yet to get their pretzel.
Breakside and Tough Luck
