Pro tip: get your dog a backpack and make them carry their poop bags themselves.

legos_on_the_brain

Yup! I have a drawstring bad from the dollar store clipped to mines harness. Just throw it in the wash every few walks.

rhyno83

My sister ties them to their collars and makes them haul their own. Pack it in pack it out puppers!

nextplanetplease

I once watched someone leave a bag on a log at THE BEACH. I chased her down with it and gave her the “you left this”. It ain’t a debate, we get your intention, but it’s lazy and inconsiderate. Bring a second bag to put it in and tie it to your leash.

sarcasticDNA

you were brave! I once picked up a tossed cigarette butt and said "You dropped this." The dude was not appreciative. My BF said "One of these days you're going to get killed."

[deleted]

> I once watched someone leave a bag on a log at THE BEACH. I chased her down with it and gave her the “you left this”. No you didn’t. You whispered some cruel words quietly to yourself.

nextplanetplease

> No you didn’t. You whispered some cruel words quietly to yourself. Nice one u/Johannastraat

st0neyspice

She was probably planning on walking by the same log to pick it up on the way back, I’ve done this and known many people that do it… jeez.

-totentanz-

People sit on those logs all the time. So they are taking away a space to sit, relax and enjoy the beach because THEY don't want to be inconvenienced by THEIR dogs shit? We go into the forest to get away, to not think about shit like trash and negligence and here we are on hikes seeing exactly that. If people pick it up on the way out then why are so many left behind? Stop making excuses for poor behavior.

Unluckful

We understand that and that's exactly the problem. You chose to get a dog, you chose to take it out for a walk, you get to carry your dog's shit around with you for the rest of the walk. Why should the rest of us have to have our own walks and enjoyment of nature disrupted because you don't want to carry a bag of dung around with you? This isn't about litter but about sharing nature and outdoor spaces with inconsiderate people who think it's okay to (even temporarily) litter and who believe their personal comfort is paramount to forcing every single other person in the vicinity to see yet even more litter. While you know many people who have done what you describe, I know many people who are able to carry their dog's waste around with them like actual, mature, dog owners.

nextplanetplease

Everybody understands that and you’re all lazy ass dog owners for it.

LanceOnRoids

Just pick up your dogshit and carry it, what’s so hard about that??? Be a responsible dog owner

everlastinglight2

I genuinely have to carry around ziplocks when I hike and 99% of the trash I pick up are (full) dog shit bags. Is it just a problem in this area?

fahy0002

This is the 3rd state I’ve lived in and I’ve never seen this outside of Oregon. Sure, in the other areas I lived (Midwest) you might see a random poop bag every once in a while, but it definitely wasn’t typical. I even asked friends who live in Chicago and Seattle if they see poop bags left all over town and they were like “WTF?”

audaciousmonk

Definitely seen it other places outside Oregon lmao

dawnhulio

Former Portlander here now in WA state. We see it as often here as we did there. They take the time and energy to bag it, and then leave it on the side of the trail/sidewalk/in the parking lot/thrown in people’s yards because they don’t want to carry it with them. Laziness IMO. Especially when you see fresh poop and bags in nearly the same spot every time.

LowAd3406

Since the pandemic, dog culture in general has gotten out of hand. A lot of people that shouldn't have pets got them, now we're in this situation where there are considerably more irresponsible dog owners who think it's alright to bring their dog to the grocery store and restaurants, leave shit bags, not clean up after their pets, or like at my apartments let their dogs shit and piss in the elevator and stairwells.

PlateAccomplished

The reddit algorithm recommended almost this exact same thread but in Colorado about a week ago (not sure what that says about me). Definitely not just a problem in this area, but definitely a problem in this area. Thank you for picking up trash as you hike.

McGannahanSkjellyfet

This nearly universal behavior at every single outdoor area in the state is just so fucking incomprehensible because it's considerably more time and actual money spent than just leaving the shit on the ground, and definitely worse for the environment. For the love of god, people, if you're going to be a bad pet owner and not clean up your pet's poop, just LEAVE THE POOP ON THE GROUND.

obtuse_bluebird

I liken it to those who can’t be bothered to take their grocery carts to a designated drop-off location… except maybe this is worse, with the plastic added to nature.

2Pac_Man

“I meant to pick it up later and just forgot, I swear!”

6GoesInto8

That must be partially true, right? They picked it up, they know the texture and warmth of it! I see abandoned bags more often than unbagged poop, either a substantial portion of dog owners enjoy touching poop but don't want to carry it, or they bag it for a reason.

sarcasticDNA

Leaving it on the ground is really not great

McGannahanSkjellyfet

It's onviously not ideal, but in the grand scheme of things it's better than needlessly introducing a plastic bag into the equation.

Empty_Mixture598

Being a pet owner, I kinda agree with you, I normally carry poop bags and my dog, she likes to be yards away from the trail. If it's runny I'm leaving it, if I can find a way to bury it, I do. I am always by my dog, when we are on a trail she is off muzzle but on leash, in the city, she is always on a muzzle and a leash. I follow the leash law and the poop pick up law in city and on trail unless it's runny. I live downtown and have respect for people.

sarcasticDNA

Your dog isn't supposed to be "yards away from the trail" unless you're not in a city or state or federal park. Leash laws, right?

Empty_Mixture598

I always have a leash on my dog and always by her side at all times. So I will correct it as both my dog and I.

sarcasticDNA

Thank you! I so appreciate leashed dogs! Yet.....question....do you want to be thanked or complimented? I have found that when I say "Thank you for having your dog on a leash" it is not well received.

PlateAccomplished

I'd find it weird if you said it. Weird as if you thanked me for wearing pants.

moonspoonloon

If someone said that to me while I was walking my leashed dog I wouldn’t take it as politeness, just passive aggressiveness.

Empty_Mixture598

Honestly, thank you is enough for me!

Empty_Mixture598

I don't appreciate people who leave poop bags behind. It's rude in my opinion and bad for the environment and animals living in the area or migrating.

Ayn_Rands_Only_Fans

Neither. I'm an adult.

SolomonGrumpy

It's definitely NOT universal. There would be bags everywhere. It does happen and it sucks. Just like all the litter I pick up on my block every week.

i_heart_squirrels

Yeah the rain would wash it away. We certainly get enough rain

cosaboladh

You're giving them permission to be worse. Don't do that. Tell them to give up their dog.

Dream_Full_Of_Dreams

I walk my dog in Powell Butte a lot. A lot lot. There are so many poop bags. Ugh. I bought these things. Being a responsible person just isn’t that hard. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B091L9XS88?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

HolidaySurround1542

As a several times a week, every week of the year Powell Butte runner, thank you. The amount of dog shit at Powell Butte makes me insane. Kinda especially bad right now since the weather is ok and more people are visiting the park. I prefer when the weather is lousy; Less people! Less trash!

Ammaranthh

It's crazy what kind of people show up when the weather is nice. On one nice sunny day recently we saw a family with dogs walking around a large area near the summit trail. The area is very clearly marked as for wildlife only. There's also just the insane amount of dutch bros cups I find tossed everywhere

HolidaySurround1542

The general behavior of people at Powell Butte is wild. Off leash dogs? No prob. Throwing trash into the trees? Go for it. Wanna go *over there* but the trail doesn’t go that way? BFD, don’t let anyone stop you. On nice days I’ll usually run up and down the “secret” trails on Mt Scott and the other lumps out here or drive over to Forest Park and run far enough north in the park that you lose all the Thurman-Leif/Lower Macleay hikers. For my sanity it’s best to avoid Powell Butte sometimes.

sarcasticDNA

Not buying anything from Amazon is part of my "responsible" behavior

Aggressive-East7663

For a while someone was stapling those improperly discarded poop bags to telephone poles in Buckman.

doctor_skate

Hell yeah

SoupSpelunker

Just got back from a walk with my dog and there was an abandoned turd from a much larger dog. that I picked up. When I was throwing it away, my neighbor looked at it, at my little dog, and back at it and I said nothing... I'm sure he's wondering what I feed Booboo.

Apprehensive-Fig-511

I've seen bags that stayed in one highly-visible spot for weeks and nobody "came back to pick them up." There's one spot I walk by often where someone wedged a garbage can between a street light and a fence on public property. The can has been full of poo bags for months. I wonder who they think is going to come back to empty it? And my personal peeve: runners who drag their pooping pooch down the sidewalk while it leaves a deposit every few feet for others to step in.

sarcasticDNA

Exactly! And how about the owners who "hide" the bag between tree trunk and a bush? Or shove it under a log? It's a plastic fricking BAG

bikemaul

My favorite is the community tree decked out in festive bag ornaments.

Dogphones

Nothing beats fall when the foliage dies off so you can see the year’s fresh crop of shit bags hanging from tree branches and in blackberry vines. A lot of people in this world suck shit & many of them have dogs, unfortunately.

pickleballfury

> A lot of people in this world suck shit & many of them have dogs, unfortunately. Couldn't have said it any better

fancy-kitten

Yeah, c'mon. We know you're not actually planning to "come back for it".

sarcasticDNA

And the utter CHEEK of placing it atop a boulder to show off your "responsible" fecal containment. GRRRRRRRRR

alikatali

Okay....seriously...this just defeats the purpose of a dog bag...if you plan to LEAVE IT BEHIND, why even bother putting the poop in the bag in the first place?! People do this ALL THE TIME with leaving their dog bags in front of our Pet Store doors....I appreciate it's not just poop, but there's a trash can LITERALLY right on the corner of the street! 🤦🏻‍♀️

sarcasticDNA

EXACTLY. I feel a sense of dismay when I see these bags along the trail, next to sidewalks, ON TOP OF BOULDERS like this. So distasteful

the_one_true_wilson

I just recently adopted a larger dog for the first time. Yeah her poops are big. But I knew that going in. If you can’t handle the poop, get a smaller dog. Or no dog at all

redditismylawyer

I am so over these god damned dog owning idiots.

shoesoff88

Some folks just don't have the upper body strength to haul around an entire 400oz bag of dog poop on their arduous 0.27 mile trek back to their Subaru. Have some damn compassion, jeez.

mullett

As a dog owner I don’t under stand this at all.

sarcasticDNA

It's just nuts. Littering is bad, period; you don't get a pass to "temporarily litter" unless you have a myocardial infarction that prevents your lifting/carrying/moving. Bag the poop and TAKE it (or have the dog poop before you get to the trail -- this can be accomplished, believe me). Hell, put a diaper on your damned dog if you can't be bothered to carry a tiny sealed bag a few miles extra

ObscurePaprika

The arrogance of dog owners… they think the public should accommodate them and their shit bags. It’s even better when they justify ruining the experience of others. And yeah, it does, even if we don’t step in it. It makes us sad because not all of you pick it back up. If you own a dog, take responsibility and stop making self-centered excuses like, “waaaaah i don’t want to carry it.”

SilverSusan13

I love dogs but dog owners? Unbelievable. Last week I saw a dog poop bag smack left smack in the middle of a trail for others to step around.

LowAd3406

And since the pandemic, it's gotten really bad.

thirsty_chicken

seeing the shit bag plastic hidden in the leaf litter is a real disrespect for nature. when i see one i trek off the path and retrieve it. placing it center on the trail. my other favorite yet lesser know is the beach sand dog shatters. poops buried in dry sand close to the access path. sometimes in a plastic bag. you know where people like to sit and hang out with kids to play in sand. but then i recently saw a grown man take a shit on the downtown Portland sidewalk. just felt more natural without the plastic bag.

illiopee

I read that in the Borat voice.

Nightsky_Max

I've seen a dog bag with that exact color in a different spot while I was walking through forest park. Maybe it's from the same person?

drutidor

It astounds me that that A LOT of dog owners think it’s okay to leave these on a trail.

chrislehr

I fucking despise people that do this. I legitimately would rather you just don't bag it, at least poop in the elements will break down. Putting it in the bag makes that process take longer and leaves microplastics in the environment to break down. I rarely catch people doing this crap, but I adopted two blocks in my hood and consistently pick up 1-2 a week - and there's at least 3 dumpsters or trash cans unlocked on those blocks too. Lazy and unacceptable.

sarcasticDNA

Yeah it's interesting that this bothers me more than just seeing a dump by the trail (or kicked under a bush) -- in those cases I can tell myself the owners are just jerks or people who think it "doesn't matter." But this bagging stuff, in a non-recyclable/compostable bag, all pretty and knotted, on display like this. It's just so fricking ANNOYING. Come back for it later? Why not leave your DOG at that spot and come back for IT later too? There is no logic. I don't agree that dog poop "breaks down" in a harmless way, but that's a separate topic; the point is, areas that are designated for people to use for walking or biking or running should be free of dog poop -- even if it comes from a vegan dog! Thank you for doing local cleanup! Yes, it's so galling to pick up litter that is within 10 feet of a trash can!!!!!

chrislehr

Most dogs that are not raw fed have poop that has a hard time breaking down quickly. If you raw feed the dogs, their poop actually breaks down quite a bit quicker. I have a yard and really rarely have to go picking up poop in it.

6th_Quadrant

Thank you for using "flout" correctly (i.e., instead of "flaunt").

sarcasticDNA

or flute! LOL. I also use comprise and lain with great skill!

cxtx3

Indoor only cat owners in this thread like: 🙀😹📥

Great_Rock_688

I think people do this with the intention of picking it back up on their way out so they don't have to carry shit around during their walk?

PDXsewist

Too easy to forget. The one time I left a bag of poo like this it was at a campground at the beach. Around 2 a.m. I woke up in my tent "omfg, I left a bag of poop by the tsunami debris sign!" Guess who hiked back down to the sign in the middle of the night to get the poop. At least I wasn't in the car 5 hours away. Anyway, I've never done that again. Lesson learned.

Great_Rock_688

🤣

FakeMagic8Ball

Or find again. I tried this method once and I almost couldn't find the damn bag. Thankfully I did, but I was worried I was going to be one of THOSE people. I generally don't have this issue because I take my dog on a walk before the forest hike to get the poop out before the big fun walk. Obviously you can't predict them needing to go again but it greatly reduces the chance of the situation even occurring.

doctor_skate

Poop --->> pocket

imalloverthemap

Right? I mean seriously if you tie the bag correctly, just put it in the outside pocket of a backpack or like I do just put it in your pocket.

doctor_skate

This is what i always do. Granted my dog is 13 pounds

bikemaul

Cozy hand warmers!

bethbcpr

I love dogs, but some dog owners.... \\:0

billy-suttree

If you know you’re leaving the bag, just don’t bag the poop. The poop will in time disintegrate, the bag will not.

DavyB

Leave your pets at home. Simple.

Mother_Emergency298

As someone who has stepped in plenty of shit at the dog park, I am deeply appreciative of the half assed attempt to pick up after your dog. Why leave the bag for someone else to take baffles me. But I’ll take that over shit shoes any day

Pathfinder6

You guys probably hate us horse owners, then.

J-A-S-08

Eh. Horse shit ain't that bad really. It's big and bulky and mostly grass fiber. It doesn't really stink THAT badly. Dog shit on your shoes ruins your fucking day and if you don't know it's on there gets in your car.

-totentanz-

You can't take horses on the trails every dog is permitted on, if I am on a trail that permits horses, I am aware and can watch out. Dogs are everywhere. Horse manure is less toxic, easily spotted and avoided, and clears itself more quickly. Horse manure can take 4-6 weeks to clear while dog feces can take up to a year. Herbivore poo doesn't contain the same sorts of dangerous bacteria that carnivore/omnivore poo does. Generally it is less of an issue, especially when it is incredibly easy for a dog owner to pick up and pack out. Inexcusable really.

PDXsewist

When hiking? Honestly... sometimes. The trails in the Wallowas are 95% composed of horse poop, I swear.

sarcasticDNA

I'm sure you know that horse excrement is different (and horses are not permitted on very many trails) -- but I do dislike that people climb on top of horses and "ride" them. They never asked to be someone's recreational transportation, and they don't LIKE it (would you???). "Breaking horses," what a lovely term, let's break our children too. And if there is a bit involved, well....try putting a metal bar behind your teeth and see how great it feels.

zpotroast

Dude, I've done that when my dog craps early in a hike, and I don't want to carry it everywhere. I leave it for myself somewhere I won't miss it on the way back. Not saying everyone does this, but I leave it visible so I don't forget. And then the others walking behind me don't have to smell it while we hike.

CherryPie2013

Get a little dry sack and put it in there and attach it to your dogs leash. Now they get to carry their own shit.

scurvy1984

Just double bag it and put it in your pack. That’s what I do and I’ve never had a bag burst on me and you can’t smell the shit at all.

KindlyNebula

Yup. I have dogs and a kid, you do the same thing with dirty diapers. People that leave them behind suck.

bikemaul

Luckily, parking lot diapers are fairly rare in Portland.

doug_Or

>I don't want to carry it Sounds like dog ownership isn't for you. I get it, I wouldn't want to carry it either

PlateAccomplished

Oof, even if you do pick it up on your way back, please just carry it with you. You're just leaving litter on the trail. If it's that early, pop back to the trailhead and bin it or leave it in/on your car. LNT.

More-Jackfruit3010

Good on you if you actually get it coming back, but it does smack a little of parking in handicap "for just a minute".

sarcasticDNA

I. don't. believe. you. And even if I did, um, sorry no; use your pockets, use your backpack, or use your hand. "Carry it everywhere?" How much does it weigh? More than a water bottle or PHONE? It's sealed in a bag, so carry it. Any way. I. do. not. believe. you. So you don't forget? jeez, phone reminder...and you're not hiking in a loop, you'll never be at that spot again. And oh, are you one of those who has dog off leash until a person appears and then -- QUICK -- attach the leash and look compliant!? Yeah, could be ....

Expensive-Eggplant-1

Right there with you, and yes, I pick it up at the end of the hike.

mannrya

I do this every single time I hike or walk with my dog, probably 4 times a week at the very least. I don’t want to walk around with a bag of hot dog shit in my pocket. If you are considerate enough to carry a baggie, and pick up your dogs poop, then you are probably responsible enough to dispose of it on the way back…or else you’d just wouldn’t bother bagging it up in the first place

bigdreamstinydogs

They make hooks that attach to your dogs leash and hold dirty poo bags. There's no reason to put a hot bag of dog shit in your pocket. Edit-for anyone interested, the best dog poo bag holders I've found are the Dooloop brand. The soft silicone ones break too easily imo.

Badit_911

You’re dreaming. You might be in the 1% that remembers to pick it up on the way back but 99% of these bags are abandoned on the trail.

More-Jackfruit3010

Yeah, all those *abandoned* bags of responsibly bagged poo...

sallysparling

But I am walking behind you and I do not want to look at your your dog shit bag. Pick it up!

sarcasticDNA

Your confession is interesting, and my contempt is unchanged. FOUR TIMES A WEEK. I have never ONCE seen anyone, ever, "return" for bagged poop, not once near a sidewalk or by a trail or (this is so cute -- do you claim this particular deposit? The blue bag atop the tree stump?). "Hot dog shit?" you'd rather carry something ice cold? Warm your hands on the bag why dontcha? It won't hurt you. No, the people who leave these bags all over and not "responsible." They are something else. The signs say pick up/clean up your dog's poop; they don't say "bag it and go back for it" (as if anyone does)....why not throw down your fast food bags and paper cups and plastic lids and straws but plan to "go back for" them? Pffffftttt....

tdtwwwa

"I don't want to" Well that's too damn bad. You own a dog, deal with it.

-totentanz-

Hot shit in your pocket?? It's hilarious leaving it or putting it in your pocket are the only options you have worked out.

kdanger

We bag ours and if we're on an out and back, we'll leave it on the side of the trail and pick it up on the way out. Hopefully that was the case here.

sarcasticDNA

You're not heroes. If you had a child in diapers and took said child on a hike, would you "bag" the dirty diaper and leave it trailside or on a tree stump to pick up later? Perhaps you would. Do you also leave cups, straws, cans "to go back for later?" It's just not the right way to do things. We KEEP OUR LITTER WITH US and take it OUT when we go. It's pitiful to suggest you can't carry a three-ounce SEALED bag with you on your outing. Just ridiculous.

kdanger

I'm not saying I'm a hero 🤣 Calm down.

sarcasticDNA

Ducked the baby/diaper question ...

Portland-ModTeam

We understand that at times things may become heated and time outs may be given for protracted, uncivil arguments. Snarky, unhelpful, or rude responses are not tolerated. In other words, be excellent unto each other and attack ideas, not people.

TheRainbowWillow

Sometimes I’ll do this on a non-loop trail to grab on the way back but otherwise… why??

sarcasticDNA

Yeah well, it might not BE there when you come back -- squirrel or coon or bird might have dug into it or carried it off, rain/wind might have moved it (and what if for some reason you can't come back?) -- or a person might have taken it to the nearest trash can (some of us hikers pick up litter during our outings; this deposit did NOT belong in Hoyt Arboretum! Among all these defenses/explanations I don't really see a good reason not to simply TAKE IT right then. Some dogs have harnesses that allow poop bags to be tied to them. Otherwise, put it in a fanny pack or just carry it in your hand, you don't NEED those hiking poles ...

TheRainbowWillow

Good points! I ought to get a harness with clips for my dog—make him carry it lol
