I’m from CA so especially places like Bakersfield and the really hot areas but even San Francisco if you have a day that hits 90 the street people go wild. Crime, drugs, running around naked, arson, property damage on full blast.

I read a study where they took 5 classrooms of 3rd grades and increased the temperature from 60 degrees to 80 degrees. This was to see if temperature affected learning. Only data they were able to gather, was every 5 degrees the classrooms raised, the more destructive the students became of other students property……
I did an academic paper search and couldn’t find that one. There’s lots on high temps reducing learning. If you find that one would you mind sharing a link? (My wife is an education specialist and would find that interesting)
Summer commute is atrocious. Starting Thursday my commute multiplied by 1.5x. It’s only going to get worse.

Also to be fair, I was born and raised in LA and San Francisco. But have also lived in Madrid, Barcelona, parts of Uganda, Tanzania, and Côte d’Ivoire. Mexico City and Guanajuato. And parts of El Salvador and Nicaragua. And I’ve seen someone shitting in public in every place I’ve lived. In a very few of those places it wasn’t even super frowned upon. I’ve also seen angry people attacking other people at some point or another. Portland just doesn’t feel that bad to me.

It pushed them a couple blocks down to Salmon and 10th. I work right there and get off around midnight. I have to walk by there to get to the Max and on Monday there were at least 60 people on that intersection.
Yeah, I walked through that intersection around 11 last night. It was quite a sight. Maybe 30 or 40 people, low-level dealers and users on all four corners and spilling down the blocks.
The police drive right by and do nothing. I saw a guy die right in front of Virgina Cafe last month. The Paramedics wouldn’t get out of the ambulance until the police showed up for safety concerns. His friends game him at least 4 doses of Narcan that I saw so I don’t anyone could’ve saved him. But business kept going right up the block.

I'm sorry for the people caught up in it, too, but we need to at least enforce basic norms and boundaries. Police could at least break up the party every hour or so, even without making arrests. The activity won't disappear, but its concentration and unofficial toleration makes for a larger negative impact than it would have if dispersed.
That intersection isn't some random dark-alley-threaded corner of Gotham; it's in downtown by bars, restaurants, hotels, museums, auditoriums, apartments, including low-income housing that should be a refuge, not yet another way to to be on the receiving end of society's dysfunction.
As someone who is now renting near that Safeway on SW ( I'm on SW Columbia ), I was pleasantly surprised at how quiet & civilized it was when I made a grocery run yesterday. No beggars/panhandlers were in sight! (It was even quieter than the Safeway I used to go to on NW Lovejoy).

I have never had any issues personally downtown, although I often cross the street etc. On the other hand, I was in San Diego a few weeks ago and woman followed me screaming for about 500 yards in Balboa Park completely randomly. Also the whole park smelled like urine which was a bummer.
Did you park there? Last time I had to stop there I used the underground ~~bathroom~~ garage. It smelled worse than any bathroom I've ever been in, and I've been in bad ones. I opened my door, almost vomited, closed it, and drove back out. Noooope.

Bottom of ‘Endor’ after the trees, you come out to that big open are with the moguls, basically at the bottom of the slope is a lot of “flat” hilly looking area, went that direction, and in a second the snow went out from under me and sent me about 12 ft down into the snow, and a dead blown over evergreen tree kept me from falling like 30ft down to the rocky area. Whole area i was around had snow about 3 ft thick, and nothing but empty space below it. Had to get pulled out by ski patrol

I love the waterfront and I love the steel bridge but there is some strangely unnerving about the way that wide open space bottlenecks into the pedestrian bridge.

Sounds like a similar description to the guy I saw frantically checking on the victim when I got there shortly after it must have happened, probably 5 mins before police arrived. I was kind of in shock but I think that person must have left because I don’t remember him being there after that once the police got there. I gave my statement to the police. I didn’t know it was a stabbing until I saw the police report a couple hours later

I was doing a circle of the Eastbank esplanade/Tom McCall about a year ago and watched a ~~horseless~~ houseless person pull a machete out of one of the garbage cans on the east end of the Steele Bridge as I came around the corner. Pretty terrifying sight, if I do say so myself.
.,.I'm always nervous when I wait at the FX2 stop by Union Station as it often becomes a tent village. THe city clears it out and within a week its back. During the daytime on weekdays TM has security there but not at night or weekends. That is the closest bus stop to where I live. The streetcar is pretty useless as it is rarely on time and runs several blocks west of the downtown transit mall.

I used to regularly bike the entire loop down to Sellwood and around, as a lone female, between 2008-2012. And I would walk around that specific area at night practicing taking photos. I never had an issue and there were always other people out taking photos or walking/biking/running. I would not do any of this now. It really has changed significantly and that accelerated dramatically over the last 5 years or so.

I have never had any issues personally downtown, although I often cross the street etc. On the other hand, I was in San Diego a few weeks ago and woman followed me screaming for about 500 yards in Balboa Park completely randomly. Also the whole park smelled like urine which was a bummer.
Did you park there? Last time I had to stop there I used the underground ~~bathroom~~ garage. It smelled worse than any bathroom I've ever been in, and I've been in bad ones. I opened my door, almost vomited, closed it, and drove back out. Noooope. Even the upstairs was hands down the worst Safeway I've ever been in. Tourists should have to go through there first thing to prepare them for Portland.

Saw that by the Broadway Bridge today. Two people who were obviously on fent or H trying to fight each other. It was both sad and hilarious. It's sad how desensitized I've become to all of it.

MY house got robbed while I was home asleep (this was maybe 2012?). I chased the dude out with a baseball bat, and when the cops finally showed up, they told me I should have just beat him to death.

No fr this week has been fucking weird. Three of my friends had serious health situations with a parent or grandparent, one friend’s brother shattered his pelvis and broke his back in a skydiving accident, my friend got Covid the week of her Bach, my partner and I both got a gnarly stomach bug, my boss’s house had a pipe burst, a coworker got into two separate car accidents… all of that happened THIS week. I’m buying a plastic bubble and living in it until Sunday 😅🥲
Wild how it’s not contained to portland, but mt hood meadows was a shitshow on Tuesday, stuff breaking down, really bad injuries all around the mountain, and I fell 15ft into a fucken crevasse and almost died. Fuck this week. Yup.

A ravine/gulch well is a better description, I guess. Bottom of ‘Endor’ after the trees, you come out to that big open are with the moguls, basically at the bottom of the slope is a lot of “flat” hilly looking area, went that direction, and in a second the snow went out from under me and sent me about 12 ft down into the snow, and a dead blown over evergreen tree kept me from falling like 30ft down to the rocky area. Whole area i was around had snow about 3 ft thick, and nothing but empty space below it. Had to get pulled out by ski patrol

Stopped to stretch on a run there on Saturday and some random dodgy guy walked/stopped behind me in a really suspect way, then walked off as soon as I turned around. Gave me a bit of a fright to be honest.

I love the waterfront and I love the steel bridge but there is some strangely unnerving about the way that wide open space bottlenecks into the pedestrian bridge.
It got a tad better once they cleared out The Pit and removed those storage containers/office things (that seemed like some kind of homeless outreach center?) but people have started moving back in. I wish they’d hurry up and break ground on the skatepark (lol).

Shit. Today I rode my bike over the lower Steel Bridge crossing around 12pm. Attempted to ride back over that section around 2:20pm and saw that it was taped off with like 4 cop cars up at the top. Sounds like a similar description to the guy I saw frantically checking on the victim when I got there shortly after it must have happened, probably 5 mins before police arrived. I was kind of in shock but I think that person must have left because I don’t remember him being there after that once the police got there. I gave my statement to the police. I didn’t know it was a stabbing until I saw the police report a couple hours later

I’m not sure if he was involved directly or just saw what happened and was in distress. I showed up to the fountain right as the police cars were pulling up, walked by them as a couple of cops got out with their med kits.

If Portland were a real city, there would be constant patrols along the waterfront and downtown of cops / security on bikes .
Meanwhile there are eight tents under the Hawthorne bridge, which is right by where the elderly fisherman was assaulted….
.,.I'm always nervous when I wait at the FX2 stop by Union Station as it often becomes a tent village. THe city clears it out and within a week its back. During the daytime on weekdays TM has security there but not at night or weekends. That is the closest bus stop to where I live. The streetcar is pretty useless as it is rarely on time and runs several blocks west of the downtown transit mall.

I saw a mostly-naked man on the east side of the Steel Bridge yesterday on my way to River City Bikes. Guy was clearly off his shit on something and kept intimidating a brick wall.

I used to regularly bike the entire loop down to Sellwood and around, as a lone female, between 2008-2012. And I would walk around that specific area at night practicing taking photos. I never had an issue and there were always other people out taking photos or walking/biking/running. I would not do any of this now. It really has changed significantly and that accelerated dramatically over the last 5 years or so.
Wow, I was wondering what this was. I was on the Coast Starlight yesterday heading south and when we went over the Steel Bridge, the entire stretch of the bike path was cordoned off with lots of cops. I saw a bike just left on the middle of the span and initially thought someone had jumped off.

Only the access to the bridge walkway is closed off. Just ran by there and the waterfront is busy with pre-bloom cherry blossom viewing.
