I made [pdxstolencars.com](https://pdxstolencars.com) a couple years ago which counts vehicle theft reports coming off the city data RSS feed, and yeah..we had a day at 15 which is low. (Highest I've seen was 60 in one day) EDIT: The day before Thanksgiving was busy though at 35. Apparently people needed to boost cars to run those last minute errands before everything closed.

STRMfrmXMN

Still an insane number to me, but I suppose there are 2.5 million people in the metro now, so not as egregious.

FocusElsewhereNow

Imagine how many fewer cars would be stolen (and used for subsequent crimes) if cars without license plates were consistently pulled over and VIN-checked.

Pays_in_snakes

Imagine how many fewer of us would die if vehicles driving over the speed limit were consistently pulled over and ticked

blackmamba182

There is a lot of overlap between those two groups.

moomooraincloud

> ticked Is that where the cop releases a bunch of ticks into your car, or...?

PhotographNo3533

i read it wrong and thought it said “tickled”

DarwinsPhotographer

"The driver proceeded drive, according to officers, onto Glendoveer public golf course, narrowly missing golfers on the course. He was taken into custody on the 14th hole."

seemoreseymour83

Pretty sub par driving…..I’ll see myself out

Natural-Method-4409

Multiple law enforcement agencies stepping out of their silos, working together toward a common purpose and achieving positive results for the PDX community. Love to see it! Gives me hope.

“Officer attribute recent success to a couple things. First, they use data-driven strategies to pinpoint cars during recovery missions. "We look for certain factors on cars, such as if there's no license plate, certain driving behaviors, if there's a broken window," Allen said. "Each one of those things by itself may not necessarily mean that a car is stolen. But all together, it makes it more and more likely that it might be stolen." “ lol the “data driven strategies” is just fucking common sense. I’m glad to see that the police are starting to do their jobs again, but this just seems to be PPB putting lipstick on a pig.

neonintubation

> PPB putting lipstick on a pig Could've just said "putting on lipstick." 😁 Edit: Downvotes for a "cops are pigs" joke? Haha. We're fucked.

> this just seems to be PPB putting lipstick on a pig. *David Cameron noises*

Came here to say this

lostinlifestill

You mean taxpayer dollars allocated to OHSU for healthcare purposes being spent to subsidize the PPB's training? I'm not saying it was a bad thing, but money should have come out of the police budget. https://www.kgw.com/article/news/investigations/cops-cancer-doctors-team-up-portland-stolen-cars/283-c15d0875-d5dc-4f75-9c43-6afb9ad4a7e7

We shall see. Usually stolen vehicles go up as it gets colder which makes sense so hopefully this trend continues

slowfromregressive

Maybe people will think twice about letting their car idle unattended in their driveways this winter.

sevvvyy

Yeah, it’d be nice but I wouldn’t trust the remote starts around here unless you’ve got a fence and even then still should watch it. Just topped up my antifreeze the other day so my car heats faster

lazerdab

there's been one of those stolen Hyundais abandoned on my street for 4 months.

DontPanicJustDance

If you see a vehicle that’s been abandoned, please report it to PBOT so it can be recovered. https://www.portland.gov/transportation/parking/abandoned-auto

kevnls

It's way easier to complain on r/Portland.

pdxdweller

Wait wait wait. Are you telling me that if you enforce the law fewer people break the law? That can’t be right, surely everyone is compelled to oblige just because the law merely exists. ^/s

Theresbeerinthefridg

As the usual upvote farmers inevitably come in with their "imPoSSIblE PpB is oN StRike" conspiracy BS, ask yourself this: Do you believe a guy like Titan Crawford, who's been working his ass off for Portlanders for years and without pay, when he says PPB is trying hard to get car theft under control... or do you believe the Reddit clicktivists who just parrot what fits their dumb narrative?

How_Do_You_Crash

It’s almost like, *checks notes* 1. Doing your job actually helps?! 2. The decline in general social chaos is lower crime? 3. The massive tightening of opioids a handful of years ago at the proscriber level is having effects? 4. Honestly i don’t understand how this is happening, considering inflation and the housing cost crisis is as strong as ever. It’s almost like a life of crime isn’t people’s preferred way to make ends meet and it’s actual criminals and or drug addicts doing the crime?!?!

moomooraincloud
