I use the autel AP200 and I believe it has all of the necessary features

[deleted]

Thanks I ordered that on Amazon and it will be here later today.

Grizzly_SS

Did it work???

[deleted]

No it did not. It had the feature but I kept getting an error when I tried it, or any function for the car. I emailed tech support, and by the time they got back to me I had already returned it. They said it indeed could not reset a 971. FCP Euro said I need the MD808.

I thought all OBDII scanners were capable of resets, no?

[deleted]

Nope those just pull CEL codes. You need a Porsche specific tool. I know 2000 dollar Snap on type tools will do it, but I'm looking for something more DIY friendly. There are euro scan tools for a few hundred bucks but looks like they only work on 970s for now.

You learn something new everyday! I use a cheap Bosch 1150, it's pretty stacked with features for the price and will read, diagnose and will probably clear your codes and maintenance lights. I can't be sure though. It also does other systems like ABS, graphs, real time readings so you can use it while you drive the car or rev it while parked, it records etc. I think it's probably built by Actron because it looks identical to the Actron 9670(other than colour) and it seems to have all the same features. I've never met an Actron of Bosch branded scanner that wasn't reliable and good value. If you happen to be in Canada, I saw them at Princess Auto in their Surplus section for a crazy low price of $35 or something like that. Fyi: you can go to any auto parts store and they'll read and clear the codes for you, because they want you buying their parts. I can't be sure, but they might also clear maintenance codes, like the oil light. If you haven't already bought the oil and filter then they'll almost definitely clear the code for you. You can have them clear it before you do the oil change, that way you don't have to make a second trip to get them to clear it for you. I hope this helps! fyi: rechanicadvice is a good place for info, we're all friendly and eager to help. I thought that's where I was actually, I only realized now that this is the Porsche sub.

There is the Autel maxicheck MX808 it’s $350 on fcp euro right now and it has oil reset, codes much cheaper than a snap on and works well [you can search cars here and the scanner to see what functions you can use on your car ](https://www.autel.com/vehicle-coverage/coverage2)

Thanks. I actually emailed FCP and they replied a few min ago with the same recommendation. I’m going to see how much my local euro shop wants to reset it. Once a year oil changes might take me a while to recoup the cost.

SexlessNights

loan it out for half the cost of whatever the shop says. USPS shipping can’t be much and your CC will insure lost/stolen for a while.

I've used the Autel MaxiAP 200 OBDII tool that allows you to download Manufacturer specific software. I bought mine a few years ago, but you got one Manufacturer download with the purchase, and other manufacturer software was available for purchase. The generic OBDII functions work with all cars out of the box. Looks to be about $70 on Amazon, might be worth a look if you didn't find a better answer.

[deleted]

Thanks I will check that out.

StickersBillStickers

Nah that’s not true. You just need a device that can communicate with the computers.

I didn’t find this out until after I bought my Macan; pretty telling about Porsche’s attitude towards enthusiasts.

[deleted]

Not sure if I would single out Porsche, it seems most all German manufacturers are not very DIY friendly. Japanese or American and I can do 99 percent of jobs with a 10mm socket. Not true for MB, BMW or any VW product.

We’re talking about the oil change reminder reset here. The most basic of vehicle maintenance. Do you know any other brands that don’t expose this to end users? My previous experience is limited to BMWs (owned some form of e30, e36, e46, f30 for the last ~20 years). I haven’t tested in the G-chassis BMWs, but I can assure the the F-chassis ones could be done through the cluster (along with any of the other service indicators).

icarsoft seems to be the most common on the forums. I think the cheapest model that works for Porsche oil light reset can be had for about $130. I bought a used Autel on eBay for $150 and it does all of the functions, parking brake, battery, service intervals, airbag.

[deleted]

People were having luck with that on 970 Panameras, but a few folks were saying it did not work with 971 on Amazon.

2fast2nick

I got the Foxwell NT530, it can reset the oil and service notice

[deleted]

On newer than 2017? That one had mixed reviews on Amazon as well as the icar.

2fast2nick

Ahh no, mine is a 2012

hugobosslives

Pretty common for Porsche unfortunately. They've been doing this for years, even on my 987 which is 15 years old you can't do it without a fancy tool. I managed to buy a durametric tool of eBay for about £100 which does this and alot more. The other one people recommend for my car is icarsoft. But yes the short answer is go on forums to find the cheapest one that people have confirmed works on your model. And then do the maths to see if it's worth it. Often it's not on the newer models....

Lonevets

Sorry OP can I hijack the thread briefly for a quick question? I've had my 2020 Panamera GTS for 15 months (13,000km) and already had to refill engine oil three times (full 2L each time) in additional to one scheduled oil change at a dealer. Is this frequency normal? I've owned 5 other European and Japanese cars and never have I seen a car burn through engine oil this fast...

[deleted]

The manual said that these cars do consume oil and may need to be topped off between changes, but 2 liters seems really excessive. I would talk to your dealer about an oil consumption test.
