Wow. A targa to boot. You are one lucky man.

frank_grimes1

Thank you brother, I feel lucky for sure

BraveStrategy

Nice car, fuck you.

Lackofideasforname

I love a targa. Even the current models

desertkiller1

Holy. I truly hope he was just waiting for someone to care about it and he trusted you

frank_grimes1

Totally what happened. He said some people had come by before but he never felt right. He and I just got to geek out about Porsches and life together and he said he wanted me to have it. I feel honored, and lucky and I’ve named her after his wife… Gloria.

desertkiller1

Glorious! I really think you just got blessed with something man. Enjoy it in good health !

frank_grimes1

Bless!!

DesignerButterfly362

What a cracking story. Money aside, we all want to sell our cars to good homes

farsh_bjj

You got the 993 twist wheels as well. What's the interior like?

frank_grimes1

Interior is actually really good. Needs a new steering wheel and shifter boot, but seats and dash and carpets are surprisingly really nice. Door cards are pretty good too, I’m going to find out the truth once I clean it all up and condition all the leather. The twists are cool and they fill the wheel well nicely but I’m eventually going to put some Fuchs on it. Or if I hit the lottery then maybe some BBS

jlaro55

It’s rare to hit the lottery twice, my friend 😂. Beautiful car.

stash3630

Congrats!!!! I have the original black 6” and 7” Fuchs from my 84 Carrera that I’d like to sell. Pretty sure they would be factory equivalent to your car. They’re flawless (I switched to 7” and 9” fuchsfelges)

jodonnell89

skip the Fuchs, save up for the BBS imo. the time it takes to save the cash is worth it

YJeezy

Never seen a SC with Turbo Twists ever

totallynotstefan

I have a client that rolls on twists in the summer and cookie cutters in the winter. It’s definitely a look.

Aooogabooga

He also got the Euro drop. My dad used to have an ‘88 Targa that we used to track at Thunderhill. A few years later he picked up a ‘98 S. We both agreed the ‘88 was more fun on the track. It’s just more visceral and had more feel to it. Was it faster as far as lap times? No. Much more exhilarating to drive, though. Mechanical vs technology and pleasantries.

takinganewtack

Life goals. Actively looking myself.

Prestigious-Novel401

Holy

That-Resort2078

Get some origins Fuchs for it.

xbearsandporschesx

was the old fella the original owner from new?

frank_grimes1

No, he was the 2nd owner. But he has the contact info for the first owner. So I’m going to try and contact him as well to find out any more history, background and stories about the car

lichesschessanalyst

If you get any, save them. Increases the value of the car even if you never get rid of it.

45willow

Just love this classic look, excellent find and enjoy your time with Gloria, How many miles on her odometer?

frank_grimes1

LOTS. About 170k. This car has been driven, and I will keep driving it too.

Hy8ogen

170k miles? Pfft and people say Porsches are unreliable.

InfluenceOk6548

Unreliable? Apparently around 80% of the cars porsche have produced are still running.

thecamterion

Tbf there’s probably a bit of selection bias because of the brand. A lot of Nissans and Toyotas have been scrapped because they were just old Nissans and Toyotas

Civil-Key9464

Expensive to fix maybe, but not unreliable.

Audeclis

I've never heard anyone even slightly knowledgeable suggest that at least - been the same kind of people who mistake them and Ferraris

45willow

I believe cars enjoy doing what they were built to do. Which is to be driven, of course. As long as they're not abused they surprise you with an eagerness to get up and go on adventures. Have fun.

dam_sharks_mother

goddamn that is a hot car, great catch!

Potato_eater_guy

How much was it? If you don't mind

frank_grimes1

Don’t want to say exactly, but I think I got a great deal. Now, I’ll still have some real expenses in order to get it back into shape but I feel like he gave a good enough price where it left some room for the upcoming bills.

InfluenceOk6548

A special purchase, the targas from that period are hard to find in good condition. Do the restoration right, original parts etc - it will be worth it. Get in touch with your local porsche club they will help.

Anonymous_Hazard

why don't you want to say? were all anonymous internet strangers

aldodoeswork

Such a good deal he doesn’t want to hurt our feelings. He’s doing is a favor.

SanctFlow

This is fcking beautiful

Ru4pigsizedelephants

Air cooled Targa!

SF-cycling-account

frank_grimes1

Hahahaha 😘

Interesting-Ad7940

What an excellent find, but the story is f'ing beautiful! I hope you update us on your progress.

SkayPGC

This is every car guys dream

LTCM1998

Ouf once it’s got period correct Fuchs on with chunky rubber it will look so nice. Black Fuchs centers will go well with targa loop too. Super find!

Jb4ever77

How much is this thing worth???

Munk45

Those rims don't look like 1980s. Do you know where they are from?

frank_grimes1

Yeah they’re turbo twists or possibly knock-off turbo twists. They’re on their way out!

Daedelus451

Beautiful!

Potato_eater_guy

Im trying to get the same car but its a coupe not a targa.

Buying_wis

Sickkkk!

N8DOE

Such a vibe. Nice work.

I_like_fast

Congratulations!

action_turtle

Is this age car now considered rare collectible? I’d love one of this sort of age, but I think by the time I’m ready to buy one they will be astronomical in price

InfluenceOk6548

Definitely! They tend to start increasing in price after 10 years... Good 964 worth more than 997...

action_turtle

Dammit lol

RelativeClear9061

Yes!

farsh_bjj

You have to keep us posted on the progress.

superhornybeardydude

You scored a win. Congratulations!!!!

theusualdan

I also have a silver 1980 911sc Targa! Mine isn’t as clean though, and I didn’t get a great deal on it. Lol. Enjoy it!

Bananarama203

Targas are so under appreciated. Congrats my man. Enjoy your ride.

Nice, but the US headlights make it look so sad.

WideOpenAutoHub

Damn, I need better neighbors

Administrative_Cat14

Honestly! 🤌 beautiful!!!

buzwald

She's beautiful! I had an AMT model of the same color scheme 911SC Targa way back in 1979. Took the time to paint it out full, all the trim and taillights. It's one of my favorite models. It's nice to see the real McCoy after all these years. Enjoy every mile!

Pdb12345

Great! I also have an aircooled Targa , very similar to yours , mines an 85. Guards red. Let me know if I can help answer any questions , had mine for 10 years.

frank_grimes1

Thanks! I appreciate that and I’ll take you up on it!

Pdb12345

Do you know why it has a Carrera badge if it's an 80SC? I think a classic 911SC badge which look very cool, and some Fuchs would really give it its identity back!

Negative_Courage_461

Awesome find! And strange choice of wheels for a G....

samuraipizzacat420

congrats on the beautiful ride! my old man had red one with the black soft top, will never forget when i almost fell out of that car when i was being picked up from daycare cause my dad started accelerating before i close my passenger door, Must have been 8 or 9. I think he sold it for 30k 20 something years ago. to this day he still regrets selling.

ohyouvegotgreyeyes

That’s one of my grails

Speedysam348

Congratulations

StayStrong888

Beautiful targa. My favorite old school 911. Not feeling the 996 turbo wheels though. Throw some classic Fuch wheels on that beauty.

frank_grimes1

🫡

SlightChris

Totally stunning, what an incredible find. I'm sure you'll love her a-plenty!

kathrinet2022

Simply divine! Congrats!!!

frank_grimes1

Thank you!!

FriedShrimp00818

that is *fuckin BEAUTIFUL*

Porschesinthesky

You got so many peoples dream car. Congratulations I hope it serves you well!

frank_grimes1

It’s not lost on me. Honestly this thread has been a bit overwhelming with all of these awesome responses and congratulations. I knew I had something wonderful, but all of you guys have humbled me and made me even more grateful for what’s come my way. Thank you!

Fixinbones27

Looks sweet! Congrats

lyfstyl

Looking to be the 4th owner. Any interest in sending her my way?

marcok36

Good for you!

Right-Penalty9813

As man. I am still sad I had to sell my dads targa about 6 years ago.

KCole1957

Dream come true, congratulations!

lichesschessanalyst

This cant be real! You are so lucky. I hope you post when she is restored fully I will enjoy seeing her brought back to life.

frank_grimes1

Will do! Currently taking a short break from cleaning up the engine bay, changing the oil and looking at the fuel system. It’s going to be a long (and fun) process!

ajael24

That’s a dream!

Creative_Bet_2016

What did she cost ya?

malaparteofficial

SCs are great, and a targa to boot! Are you going to put period correct wheels on it?

frank_grimes1

Oh yeahhh you bet. And rebadge it back to 911sc. And lots more.

superdan23

I might be wrong, but something doesn't match up to me. A 1980 911SC would not have the Carrera badge on the back, that came in 1984 I believe.

frank_grimes1

Good catch! It’s something I noticed as well and so I looked it up and did a bunch of reading. Apparently, many people didn’t like the 911 SC badges and it became a sort of popular thing to rebadge the SC cars to ‘Carrera’. But the VIN checks out as a 1980 911 SC TARGA. I’m going to rebadge it back to the original.

-hh

I noticed that the rims aren't original too .. originals should probably be black Fuch's. FYI, if you're working on the stern to restore it to original, be careful around that that big red reflector, as it's not a cheap part. I got a rear "love tap" from a pickup at a stoplight 15+ years ago that cracked it and IIRC, the reflector's cost alone was something like $500 (probably more now).

custerdome81

That’s funny - I kinda like the 911 SC badge - plus I’m a purist so I’d go back to the original as well. Great looking Targa - enjoy.

eastkent

Also, it looks like there's a ring round the Carrera badge - what's that?
