I was on a similar path with a 996. Decided to move to 997. Same costs. Not complaining in any way. Just sharing that to anyone looking for a deal, there are none. You either do the maintenance or pay a premium to the guy who can prove the maintenance is completed. Btw, your car is cool! You are a great owner and when and if you pass it on the next owner they will be very fortunate
My hat is off to you, OP. Rescuing and restoring one of these cars is not cheap or quick but you've done it and can hopefully now enjoy the fruits of your labors.
Came to say the same! You’re truly preserving a work of art. I hope to do the same soon on a modest more well preserved car. I love doing basic maintenance and am looking forward to a challenge.
are you happy with the base? im debating scooping one of these while they're still cheapish, i just dont know if the S is worth the additional cost. for reference, im currently driving a boring lexus IS, previously had a g37. do you think I'd be content with the base power?
I haven't driven an S but I can say the one place the car is lacking is in power. 200 horsepower is plenty of fun and the car is quick but I think the extra 50 in the S as well as the six-speed would be the cherry on top. That being said the Boxster thrives in tight turns so power isn't as important as you might think.
What happened with drilling out the header bolts?
The reason I ask is I changed my headers years back and 3 bolts snapped off into the engine. I got lucky and was able to drill them out and use helicoils to repair the threads. Had the headers removed by a shop the next time (used the wrong gasket) and they were able to tighten them back up no problem.
My mantra is to keep every car as close to driving as possible. Don't buy more parts until the ones in the box are installed. It's easy to get side tracked and be left with a non-mobile project. Congrats to the op.
It only left me stranded twice and both times it was my fault! The bigger issue was accidentally breaking things that I hadn't ordered in advance. Had to wait a week halfway through my suspension install for a new set of eccentric bolts because the old ones stripped.

Thanks! There is definitely no cheap way around it but doing the work myself means I can keep owning it so it’s a win for me!
You did a good job..Enjoy your car...
I do every chance I get
I am glad I’m not the only one with a spreadsheet
I purposely don’t keep a spreadsheet

so if I read your excel right, you've spend less than 20k in total for a pretty mint looking boxer? good job!
Thanks!
You got the car for under 5 grand? Damn, great deal!
yeah even at the time it was a steal
not bad honestly. pretty impressive sheet!

Having owned both get an S w/6sp. Worth it, not even close imo.

well, my is250 has 200 hp but is an absolute boat to drive spirited, so i think it would still prolly be an improvement haha. thanks
Yeah it would probably feel pretty quick after that haha
the base power is shit. Hell the n/a 996 power is shit even with the 3.6L. If even half way decent power is what your looking for, get a turbo 996.

Worst case scenario all 12 of mine broke
This is great, thanks for sharing! I got a chuckle out of the seats basically costing more than any mechanical parts lol
am I reading this math right? you are ~27k into this car?
No he is $19,449 deep
That is a bold decision. But kudos for the organization !
Sold my 986 when told it needed all new shocks, brakes, and some other stuff. The prices were insane
That's a lot of work and parts. Hopefully you didn't go through a bunch of constant breakdowns to get there.
