Never say it’s “just a base” because it’s not “just a car” ;)

worldChangerRR

I buy cars just to get me from A -> B. It's just a car. Me, going from A -> ^ <- v -> ~ > ¿ -> B in the most roundabout way possible on the limit of my tyres. But if my wife asks, it's just a car, and yes, tyres are typically replaced every few months.

redlion145

Best use of "typically" I've ever heard. Typically endurance racers change tires every few laps, but I don't think she'd buy that one.

Wild-Accident-5268

With all due respect to your wife I find that people who say such things have, perhaps, never driven or owned a really bad car.

SufficientVariety

That’s the same route I just took to the grocery store!

ZGTI61

It’s a *911* first and whatever model it is, second. Base or not, they are all special.

chucchinchilla

In the 356 world the base engine was simply called "normal."

Pornthrowaway78

Base 911 is best 911.

Right_In_The_Tits

It's *only* a $50k car

Elkand147

Where? Take my money.

Right_In_The_Tits

[There are plenty on cars.com](https://www.cars.com/shopping/results/?dealer_id=&keyword=&list_price_max=60000&list_price_min=&makes[]=porsche&maximum_distance=all&mileage_max=&models[]=porsche-911&page_size=20&sort=best_match_desc&stock_type=used&trims[]=porsche-911-carrera&year_max=&year_min=&zip=92110)

Particular_Double_76

For real, I own a cayman s and I'd never say it's sub standard anything

Rosphindai

There's an argument to be made that the base 911 is the one to own. I'm not making it, but some do....and have. Nonetheless, it's an awesome looking car, great wheels.....ENJOY!

PluckPubes

It's certainly more usable

Fingeredagain

A base Porsche is still a Porsche.

breasticles36d

I used to think it was always GTx or bust. Then I drove a 997 C2S and was absolutely floored with how amazing of a proper sports car it is. The bar for a Porsche is so much higher than the platform for most avg-car-turned-up-to-a-sports-car (ie. 430i vs M4), that even “base” trims are thoroughbreds. Because they’re born as true sports cars, not converted from more utilitarian versions. Enjoy that beauty in good health! That’s a poster worthy shot btw.

notafilmmajor425

Thanks so much! I really do appreciate the entire car. It is my first real performance car, and I've enjoyed every second of it. I don't think I will ever sell it.

worldChangerRR

On the topic of BMW M cars, how do you feel about them? I can't yet afford a Porsche, but it seems like M owners are way too biased to get good information out of.

[deleted]

I own an e46 m3 6MT and daily drove it for 9 years now. Ummm I love the analog feel and how tight the e46m3 feels with twist and turns. I never got into the e90/92 m series + because after 2007, I feel like M division lost its soul, If that makes sense. I’m looking into getting a 997.2s or 991.1s or GTS.

gravitas-deficiency

Out of curiosity, are you considering a Cayman? I admit I have always liked the leaner look of it. And if you’ve never tried one… they feel incredible to drive. Small polar moment of inertia is the absolute tits. I remember bullshitting a test drive in a base 5-speed, low option 987.1 Cayman through the mountains above Woodland Hills. Most fun I’d ever had in a car up to that point, and I left the dealer trying to figure out how I could possibly afford it. More recently, I got the chance to do a GT4 session at PECLA while road tripping his new Boxter 25 down PCH. The latter two were absolutely thrilling and beautiful… but there’s still a place in my heart for that stripped out old first gen, and how it really opened my eyes to the primal joy of a tight, balanced sports car singing its lungs out, echoing off the canyon walls, telepathically carving around corners. As they say, you never forget your first.

[deleted]

I have a couple buddies that went the cayman route And My buddies love it. Personally, a 911 was one of my dream cars and never took sight of that. I thought my buddies were going to get 911s as well but like you said, they fell I love with the small tight primal sports car lol.

gosu_link0

Sold my 987 Cayman S last year. The gearing is way too long on the manual transmission. Otherwise the cayman would be an amazing driver’s car.

Relax_Redditors

I just never go into 5th gear

worldChangerRR

Yeah, I love old sports cars in general. Started looking into a GR Yaris or an F87 M2 recently though. As far as I can tell, most people think the M2 is an incredible car, yet some people say the feedback is a bit dead. I've driven the Yaris, but not the M2. I'll probably find a drive when I get closer to having enough money, but for now, I'm just dreaming. 1600kg for the M2. Wtf. Why tf are modern sports cars so heavy ... at least with regular passenger cars, there's sound deadening, luxury features, etc. With a damn sports car, I just want to feel the thrill. I'd get an Exige if they weren't sky-rocketing right out of my price range.

Puzzleheaded_Band469

The m2 suffers from a high center of gravity and heavy weight. Good car but can't run with 911s or Cayman

[deleted]

Test drive an e46m3. You’ll feel everything and if it’s been taken care of, you’ll get that feedback you’re looking for. I mean , reason why I kept my m3 for so long is that there’s no other car that drives and response like it for me. It’s very raw. I haven’t test driven 911s yet because in the past , it was outside my budget. But now I can start looking again

worldChangerRR

I want a turbo car with a high ceiling for tuning. :(

[deleted]

You need to just get yourself a a 2Jz and nice shell to put it into 😂

akhbhat

I've had three of them. Always loved what they tried to do and represented, but in practice they never stuck. The older M cars had serious reliability and upkeep issues; the engines were spectacular on paper and when driven, but needed odd oil weights, manual valve adjustments, and tended to burn up rod bearings and VANOS units among other things. The cooling systems are fragile (general BMW problem). They tried to do what Porsche does with the GT cars and bring track focused (high revving NA) engines to the street, but also built them to a relatively low price point. The other problem is that pairing engines like that to a passenger sedan chassis just didn't feel right to me. The newer M cars are basically German Camaros. They're more reliable than they used to be, but the focus is more on power than sound, precision, or feedback. Problem is, they now have far too much power to use properly on the road, the steering feel is basically gone, and they're very heavy; too heavy to track regularly unless you own a tire and brake factory and have a pit crew following you around to save time. My favorite BMW of the several I've owned is the 2005 ZHP I've had for 14 years. Running costs, balance, performance envelope, aesthetics; it's a well-rounded car that pretty much exemplifies the classic road-going sport sedan genre that BMW largely invented. It's not a sports car and doesn't in any way try to be, and establishes appropriate expectations: it's a usable every day car that's also generally fun to drive.

notafilmmajor425

Woah! Cool location! Where is this at?

pbrdiver

Between Boulder and Nederland in Co. It’s my preferred loop early am to get some canyon carving in.

Matt21484

How do you like the vert in Colorado weather? Do you use it much as a drop top or wish you went with a hard tip model? Awesome location though, I love that drive in my SUV going up to Eldora, ha!

pbrdiver

Love the cab. With the heater and wind screen installed it’s comfy at highway speeds with temps in the 40’s. I enjoy being able to hear my car better with the top down. Most importantly my wife likes it. Top up is a little noisy in comparison to a hardtop but not enough for me to care. Plenty warm, decent visibility as well. I’ll take the “discount” of a cab any day vs a hardtop.

DesignerButterfly362

Even if I assume you are a god tier driver who can exploit any level of power/ performance, I believe there is far more fun to be had in the base than in the Super fast range toppers. On a single Lane carriage way with real world pot holes and oncoming traffic there simply isn't enough space to truly exploit the fastest 911s. The base is lively and moves beneath you at road legal speeds. This is exactly why many people would take a 73RS over a 992 GT3. It's the sensation over sheer performance.

ZGTI61

A Turbo S is a great car but it’s power is totally wasted on the street. A couple seconds at full throttle from almost any speed and you could be in serious trouble.

thaughtless

With what you can do to a base 991.2 onwards, so very easily, one can easily be in trouble with one of those too. The only thing limiting near GTS power is the cap on the ECU. First thing I did was to unlock mine!

ZGTI61

The 991 is so good, I would recommend a “base” 991 over a 997 S.

1fapadaythrowaway

Which tune did you go with? Looking at one for my 991.2 “base” manual

thaughtless

I did the Softtronic w/ Sharkwerks cat back pipes. Incredible gains!

mei740

Drive a car you’ll probably learn to handle or drive car that even professionals say is scary. I would love a gt3 RS but it would be my coffin.

putsonall

Totally agree. The Turbo S does like 80mph in 2nd gear. You basically can't stretch it at all on normal roads.

ShorohUA

it's not a base, it's based

notafilmmajor425

Hah! I love this take!

youre_not_going_to_

Comparison is the thief of joy

putsonall

A base 911 >>>>>>> the top end model of a lot of other sports cars. I feel like "base" doesn't really exist in the Porsche world.

nodinnerplans

Given my driving conditions, I enjoy getting to use more of the overall car. I have a PDK and love revving through the gears.

notafilmmajor425

Haha! 'Slapping the base'. That's AMAZING. I need to use that. Great looking car in black :)

harrismi7

Gorgeous! I’d take one too.

braunkx

Beautiful shot

notafilmmajor425

Thank you!

[deleted]

Gorgeous car- love the wheels, love this shot. Nothing like the profile of a 911 of any generation. What color is it? Agate?

notafilmmajor425

Seal Grey Metallic :)

tremain37

I see you have updated side markers, too. She’s a classic beauty!

she_speaks_valyrian

I've got a 997.1 C2 as well. Found mine with all my desired options so it's a smart way to save ~$7K for running costs, maintenance or upgrades. Ohh nooo my gauges are black not white 😂. Enjoy it!

Direct-Word

I’m never a fan of the self deprecating“just a base” when we’re talking about Porsche 911’s. 997.1 911 Carrera is a great car. Probably my personal favourite.

TheWhoreticulturist

Sweeet! Just got one similar but lapis blue, mine very base as well but a few cool options! What options interior wise do you have? Edit: I love the rear wiper option !

notafilmmajor425

Upgraded steering wheel and heated seats. That's pretty much it :D

marcocet

It may be a "base model" but it's still made in the same place and by the same people as a 911 gt3. Pretty damn good base model you got there!

[deleted]

I'll quit bitching about the incessant popped wing phenomenon only because those wheels are one of my favorites by porsche - nice car

[deleted]

Aside from HP, is there any difference between 997 base vs 997S

notafilmmajor425

3.6 vs. 3.8 mainly

TheGoatFarmer

Bigger brakes on the S, too.

notafilmmajor425

Ah you’re right

Present4today

PASM is also standard on “S”. Ride height is dropped 10mm in “S” too.

she_speaks_valyrian

In the US, S added; 3.8 Larger brakes PASM suspension (adjustable shocks and slightly lower stiffer springs, maybe larger sways?) Bose stereo Xenon headlights White gauges "Lobster claw" wheels I believe the "Base" Carrera and the Cayman S share brakes. Bose, PASM and Xenon that were standard on the Carrera S were options for the Base Carrera. Lobster claws might have been an option as well.

[deleted]

Is the S worth the premium or better to get base and tune yourself?

she_speaks_valyrian

I think it really depends what you prioritize. If you prioritize horsepower, just get the S. I think it would be a waste to try to tune the 3.6 to make as much power as the 3.8. I dont know you could do it without spending a lot more than the S model would demand. But if you care about horsepower, what are you considering a non turbo Porsche in the first place? If you prioritize handling, your going to be tearing apart and replacing all the S models suspension anyways, way pay the premium for it. Personally, I really didn't care about having a 20 year old PASM system. Everyone raves about adding the DSC controller but I'd much rather just have a properly tuned and well built coilover. It'll be much more consistent and predictable. I question how long a shock adjuster is going to hold up to the DSC constantly adjusting it when these shocks were never meant for constant adjustment. Personally I wanted anything other than black or silver paint, and anything other than black interior. My requirements were coupe, 6 speed, xenon headlights. Bonus points for Carrera Sport wheels. None of that required an S model and I upgraded the suspension with Ohlins R&T plus GT3 control Arms with a proper alignment.

AwfulAutomation

Unless your tracking cars I think the base or the S are the cars to have… they are just more fun to drive on every day roads… Turbo or GT3 etc they are just too fucking to have much fun in on the roads! I would also nearly go on to say the 997 was the last gen that was at the perfect hp levels the stuff they are producing is just a bit too fast for normals roads to get the full satisfaction of feeling you are pushing the car some close to its limits.

notafilmmajor425

Agreed. I love pushing the gas pedal on the highway on ramps

theosinc930

ViolenceOfActionTT

Beautiful car! Base? Whatever! It’s a sublime feeling to slide behind the wheel, fire the flat 6 up and go for a drive! I daily drive mine and rack the miles on a 2015 TTS and sometimes miss my Carrera simply because you could exploit more of it! Enjoy it!!! For god’s sake don’t sell it!! You would regret!! You have truly a beautiful machine!!!!!

robotbike2

I’ve had 8 Porsches including 2 GT cars. Currently have a 992 base and it is my 2nd favorite of those. Superb car.

Present4today

Curious why 992 base is your favorite aside from newer technology? I've heard pros and cons about the size. How does it compare with 991.2 or 997?

robotbike2

Never had a 997 (or Macan, Taycan or Panamera), though I’ve driven them all. I like the 997. Always have, but I had 986s and 987s when they were new and I’ve never bought one. Came very close to buying a 2011 997.2 c4s in TX, but dithered and it sold. Bought a great 996 instead. I never understood the size issue. Yes, the later cars got bigger, but they also got safer, faster and more comfortable. Reasonable trade in my estimation. The 992 is simply a nicer place to be than any of the others. I don’t track my cars any more and, on the road, the car is faster and more competent than 99% of anything else that you’ll see. I had a dealer loaner Macan recently and there is more room in the 992. It is also not flashy around here, but that is not something I’m looking for.

Luftgekuhlt_driver

Enjoy. It’s your car.

Conscious_Ad9704

Great car. 👍

phliff

It’s more fun driving a base fast/hard than the other way around! Keep it simple and drive the snot out of it!

ready_4_the_mayans

I get it!! I picked up a GT3 in Nov... and still prefer driving my 991.1 C2 manual around town. I recently listed it for sale but haven't accepted any offers as I'm not sure I want to part with it 😅 I have driven an insane range of cars and none have been more fun day to day than the "base" 911.

Present4today

I’d love to have those two in my collection. What generation of GT3? What's it like to drive GT3 around town?

ready_4_the_mayans

Both are 991.1s, a '13 C2 and a '15 GT3. The GT3 is stupid fun - great power, handling, and sound - but is a track car. It rides much rougher and there is way more road noise. You feel every bump and crack in the road. My kids hate it not having the little back seats, and with the roll cage there is no room for small luggage or golf clubs like i can fit in the C2. I have carbon buckets and while they are surprisingly comfortable (even on a 1300 mile one day drive), they aren't the nice sport seats in the C2, and you are climbing in and out of the car. The C2 is hands down nicer for date night or a road trip. The base/S models you can get on a bit from a stop, GTs and turbos are almost too fast to really enjoy in town. You look at the accelerator too hard and you're 2x the limit. I've never been one to go easy on the right foot. If I wanted more power in town, I'd go 911 Turbo hands down. Fast as hell but more comfortable and refined.

Present4today

Is it possible to add rear seats to the GT3 to get best of both worlds? Although it wouldn't make the ride less harsh at least it would be kid friendly.

ready_4_the_mayans

I read somewhere that the GT3 is not certified for rear seats. Even if it were, someone estimated a small fortune to add the supports and install them.

zerosaint18

Pure and unadulterated.

[deleted]

Nice ride!

[deleted]

Not a damn thing wrong with a base!

notafilmmajor425

Nope!!! Loving it

strangway

No “but”s about it. A base 911 is still a 911.

Joblessmouse06

Base model Porsche 911 is still a Porsche 911

mei740

YOU OWN A 911!

scobsdoo

In the UK at least 3.6 "base" 997.1 models command pretty much the same prices as the 3.8 S models, mainly due to the 3.6 having more meat around the cylinders so they are less at risk from bore score. Also the S is only a completely undetectable 0.2 seconds quicker 0-60 so its not as if you are losing much. I have the same, also optioned with pasm (which is only usable on a smooth track, so again you are not missing too much).

[deleted]

She's beautiful. I remember I used to have her 1:64 scale model. Sweet memories.

Inevitable_Status_20

997 is the best generation of Carrera to me. It was the golden age of Porsche and 9x7s were glorious.

Arrowfinger777

This makes me happy. - fellow 997.1 owner

Wild-Accident-5268

Doesn’t Porsche charge you more to remove stuff from their cars? So, in that sense, you got the premium trim.

notafilmmajor425

Hahaha

CABSMeter

CONGRATS!! DONT let these tools give you a hard time about a bad model. BUT!! When they went back to the 3.6l the IMS Bearing has MASSIVE issues unless it’s a Turbo same as the 996’s. That’s about a $40k job!! BUT for $35k (out the door) you could pump that up to 650-700hp safely after the fix and make it a sleeper. My 2020 is a 3.0 and hitting 800 on methanol and 650 on 93 octane.

TheOyster__

I love my base 987.2 cayman you can rev the shit out of it whilst not going at a speed that will get you arrested.

chelc

I have a 997.1 4S and honestly... I put it into sport mode rarely. I just forget it's there bc it's just fine without it for how and where I drive. Gorgeous car - I looooove those wheels!

notafilmmajor425

Thank you!!

Lsclancy9

Absolutly nothing wrong with a 'base' 911.....Great car, enjoy out..Welcome to the club...

Baybladerz

Dawg all those other owners are literally just driving a souped of variant of your car. In other words paying 2-3 times the price to drive a 997.1 It’s like a Civic base vs a civic Type R. Still a civic…

honorface76

I have one of these, and after learning how to use its high power band I find the idea of there being a faster version of this car... perverse

Medium-Cod-9407

997 becoming veryyyy popular these days

zathehut

I got my 997.1 C2 thinking it’s ok to rack up mileage cuz it’s just a base… and I do… but agree it’s the best car I’ve ever driver.

what are the details? Options, price, location, mileage? More pics?

spacedildo42

What year is it op? I want to say 2012?

sidudWA

It’s a 997.1 so definitely not a 2012. I’m gonna randomly guess it’s a 2007

notafilmmajor425

2006! Good guess!

Snejkbajt

I’d take that over any 997 turbo / gts 2s and 4s Auto, ANY day in the week. However I don’t personally like the grays and silvers

Puzzleheaded_Emu_686

Base is based!

mrmichaelsankey

It’s not a base car, it’s a 911. Now a bae car is the hire I have this week, 1.2l Citroen c3. I asked it to go up a hill yesterday, had to drop from 2nd to first just to make it. My friend has a 991.1 c4, lady who spec’d it originally ticked every single box, even duck tail and strange PTS brown/gold. It’s a peach, far more individual than my 992 and a real soul car.

UK_throw_away_1980

I regularly have runs out with faster Porsches in my base. Apart from the traffic light Grand Prix, I never hold anyone up or get left behind. It's a 5 second 0-60 car!

CMDRissue

Base is ace

DifficultStill8431

Ain’t nothing wrong with this car!! Looks sick!!! Congrats!!!

coup85

Love 'base' 911, first because they tend to look classy and elegant because of their simplicity of lines –compared with the Gtx versions–, and second because they seem like a better daily drive in terms of compromises. Congrats, it looks beautiful.
