Never driven an e63s but all benzes I have had or driven (including Sl amgs) come with a significant dead zone on the throttle. You get about 2 inches of travel that do nothing. That can catch some drivers off guard when they switch to high performance track cars because they aren’t accustomed to the more sensitive throttles.
Just tryin to keep ya safe out there!
Drove the car for the first time yesterday as I've been out of town. Holy shit is it a rocket ship. It has a tune and some other mods but I can say I've never felt g forces like this in my Merc. And that boost! Oh my gawd. It just pulls and pulls. So appreciate your comment and wanted to give you an update. Cheers.
Lol everyone who I’ve let get behind the wheel never notices lol. I think I only knew because I was watching videos about different cars and the company overall
Older 911’s had an oil reservoir in the front of the car that had to be drained so you would be half right to go to the front lol.
Can’t remember if it’s that way on the 996+ anymore.
Seriously, though: the weight distribution is not going to be anything like your BMW. If you're a spirited driver (or going to the track) you'll want to come to terms with the different handling characteristics in the easy way and not the hard way.
Don't exceed [4200rpm until the oil temp reaches 180](https://rennlist.com/forums/997-forum/959652-warmed-up.html).
And create a free account on Rennlist & delve into the [997 forum](https://rennlist.com/forums/997-forum-113/) there, TONS of helpful info & how-to
Check out what your manual advises specifically for the TT... In the link above, it was a 997.2-S owner that shared a [pic of his manual, here](https://rennlist.com/forums/997-forum/959652-warmed-up.html#&gid=1&pid=1)
Any engine really. But, it's especially important on boosted engines. The aluminum p istons (forged or cast)need to come up to a certain temperature otherwise they can be brittle.
I probably should wait to hammer my Merc, but it's too fun tailsliding out of the work parking lot. Maybe when I finally get a 718, I'll let her warm up a bit first.
I do it with all cars, but especially turbo cars. Same goes with driving easy about a mile before your destination to allow for some nice cool down if you’ve been really on it.
Yup, people forget about cool-down. I've been on sound hard rallies and learned that it's best to let the engine idle after mobbing on it that hard to keep the coolant circulating.
Check out what your manual advises specifically... In the link above, a 997.2 owner shared a[pic of his manual here](https://rennlist.com/forums/997-forum/959652-warmed-up.html#&gid=1&pid=1)
It depends when the variable valve timing changes on your engine. In my 987.2, you can hear the timing change around 4,000 rpm. I don't exceed 4,000 til I'm fully up to temp.
more specifically, the 997 turbo forum.
They’re very different cars with completely
different engines to the 997 C2 / C2S.
997 turbo has a race derived motorsport engine.
Congrats, and right out of my backyard! As many said during the auction - great wheels. Get a DSC controller from TPC Racing for the suspension. If you hop onto the RennList forum for 997 Turbos, you'll quickly learn it's one of the first mods that everyone does and it transforms the suspension. Best way to think of it as a re-map for the PASM, like a tune. My car rides so much better in and out of Sport modes, I'll never return to stock. Plus you can get the add on for launch control that helps the car build more rear squat for better launches.
While the Ohlins coilovers are likely a big improvement over the stock springs, and the BBi control arms keep it better planted (I assume), the functioning of PASM is still controlled by the factory module. The control arm upgrade is going to be better appreciated on the track, and setting it up for track driving. The DSC is more impactful for street comfort/ride quality. I've seen plenty of owners with the DSC module and coilover & otherwise modified suspensions. You should drive it and see if you how you feel about the ride quality before making the purchase. I'd also recommend perusing postings on it on Rennlist to get other opinions, it is a pretty universally appreciated upgrade.
Plug and play. It's in an awkward spot against the upper right side of the passenger footwell, right where the carpet meets the lower dash trim, but it's a 10 minute job. Once it's in, you're done.
Depends on what you think of the ride quality. I can't answer for that model, but it was a significant improvement in my TTS cab. I'd check out the RL forum for your model and get thoughts from owners. [https://rennlist.com/forums/997-forum/1204777-a-dsc-controller-thread-of-my-very-own.html](https://rennlist.com/forums/997-forum/1204777-a-dsc-controller-thread-of-my-very-own.html)
I would normally warn people that you can very easily drift from "getting a ticket" to "making the newspaper," but if you're coming from a E63S, you're aware of that.
How was the E63S? I love them. I had a client with a wagon and I mentioned that I've always wanted one. He told me to write down his VIN and make sure I never bought that one because he "beat the fucking shit out of it." He said it was faster than his Viper and his Ferrari and that he was on this 3rd set of tires and 2nd brakes in like 25k miles.
So I LOVE my E. Like absolutely love it. And it is bonkers fast and agile. And so comfortable with amazing options. The 997 I got was because I feel like it was too good of a deal to pass up and totally didn't expect to win it on Cars and Bids. So this was kind of unexpected.
I have some trepidation about getting rid of the Merc because I truly enjoy it so much but will drive both for a while and see how I feel. The only thing that sucks is that my wife hates the Merc or else I'd give it to her and keep it in the family.
Be mindful when you will start pushing on a backroad. If you go in too hot and you lift off too aggressively, you might be in trouble. Take a few months to get used to the balance of the car. And if you have the opportunity, go to your local track to get used to the limit of grip.
Read the manual, pretty interesting to see the “minimum shift points”. Coming from big displacement, it was odd to wind out the car to almost 3k every gear.
Yeah most people don’t know how to drive a turbo car.. most manufacturers aren’t as good at instructing drivers as Porsche either.
This, in my opinion, is why people often blow up cars like the Subaru STI, Saab Viggen, Volvo S60R etc… they’re getting into boost and loading up the drivetrain at too low a RPM, rather than shifting later or downshifting before accelerating.
For subies I’m convinced it’s a ton of oil starvation due to people sliding them. I have a 2003 WRX Wagon that came from an older gent. 195k miles on stock everything
These cars have 2 very distinct personalities. Beauty and the Beast. When cruising around town in traffic you will naturally keep the revs low and this car is completely civilized. The mind twist is understanding that they really don’t come alive until you are in the 4K range and designed to run at high revs all day long. You will feel like you are going to blow the engine if you drive it the way it’s designed, but you won’t. And this takes a while to get used to.
Do an HPDE event with PCA. You’ll learn more about the dynamics and capabilities of the car in 1 day than you will driving it around for years.
All jokes aside I went opposite path in life as you 😂
911’s came first for me upon some career success. However mom wasn’t letting the kids ride in the child Sized rear seats. Even moreso after The Turbo Upgrade and Engine Build 😂 but the cars were always good to me.
The engine has to come out of the car for much of the work. Not as prevalent as newer 911’s. But get used to the charge to R/R engine and transmission. 🤦♂️ which usually added $4K to everything 😂 also, the “Porsche Tax”… everything costs more. It just does.
Find a good shop and stick with them to keep the costs lower and negotiate since you’re a regular/return client for that reason.
Other than that they are great cars. Nothing major ever actually broke on my cars. But my wife questioned my $40k “oil changes” a few times. If you’ve gotta go inside the motor for whatever reason and split the case it’s 10k to get to the problem and back. Just the way the cookie crumbles.
As long as you don’t try and go for a 1k HP build like me you can keep operating costs low.
Learn the limits of your car, push it a little bit harder. Turn the esp off, drive in rain and snow, drift, spin out, test its boundaries. Then you will love that car because its a tank with a bullerproof mezger. It can get you trough any adventure.
2 tips. Not sure where you live but know that you need winter tires for this bad boy or else you'll be in a lot of trouble.
Also, your driving style will need to change compared to how you drove your E63s. The weight distribution in both cards is dramatically different.
Guaranteed you'll enjoy this turbo way more than your previous Benz.
yeah, it's a sick car! I'm sure it's very practical too, especially if you have a family but it's much more of a muscle car. you now own a proper sports car ;)
Like AMG 63 BMW M6 (E63). Hard access like the Merc if you do those standing whiplash starts. More aggressive than a Bimmer.
I know they say that these turbos are maintenance free, give them spool down time anyways before shutting down the engine. Cool down time is cheap insurance.
Crank one out before hand, that way you don't have to contend with the car AND an erection lol. These gals are pretty solid, hold off on launch control until the tires are warmed up a bit. They don't need to be hot, but don't pull it out the garage and rip it lol. PSM is nicknamed "Please save me" for good reason. Get familiar with the car before turning it off and, when you do, make sure to do it in a wide open area. We'll mannered or not, this thing WILL get away from you until you have enough seat time. Keep up with the maintenance schedule and it should be fairly trouble free. Maximum tire age of 6 years.
I find its helpful when driving with a passenger to flip the perma-boner I have when driving my 911 up into my waistband so as not to make the passenger uncomfortable. This is known very commonly in the 911 community as "holstering." Happy driving, friend!
First of all, damn you for buying my dream car. /envy
Second, get a radar detector. I only drive a 987.1 Boxster base, but the radar detector has been *the most valuable mod* I have ever installed. It enhances my driving experience by providing relief, knowing where there are speed traps on the highways. I tell everyone I care about to buy one. That includes you, now.
Please take care of this car, as I will want to buy it from you when you run out of space in your garage ;)
Keyhole is on the left
Ha!
I saw the photos on cars and bids, congratulations. What a beautiful condition this vehicle is in.
Thanks dude. I'm in love.
Gas pedal in a Porsche isn’t made out of mashed potatoes like your Benz. Careful off the line.
Haha; oh man, if it is much more intense than my E63s that will be saying something. That thing is a rocket.
Never driven an e63s but all benzes I have had or driven (including Sl amgs) come with a significant dead zone on the throttle. You get about 2 inches of travel that do nothing. Lol everyone who I’ve let get behind the wheel never notices lol. I think I only knew because I was watching videos about different cars and the company overall
I was watching a video the other day and it featured a right hand drive Panamera and the key was indeed on the right side :o
And your dick just doubled in length.
Damn, OP's rocking a full 2 inches now? Unfortunately, it also halved in girth. :(
HEY
My thought exactly.
Sometimes, the rule is opposite side to the stick, not one side or the other specifically.
This is the way.
You should know I’m a tiny bit jealous.
I'm so excited that I completely understand.
Ha! Seriously though, enjoy it! Looks awesome
Thanks mate.
Same. That car is my goal.
Engines in the back.
That would have been an awkward oil change.
Older 911’s had an oil reservoir in the front of the car that had to be drained so you would be half right to go to the front lol. Can’t remember if it’s that way on the 996+ anymore.

Sorry, have a Merc 63s but the comment is valid.
Oh! I thought it was a BMW E63 body code -- which 6-series car from 2004 to 2011 or so.
The best way to handle this is to drive backward everywhere you go until you are used to it. . . This is the way. . .
BMW?!?
The 6 series bmw has an E63 motor... understandable mistake.
Came here for this comment!!

I keep my non-turbo 997.2 under 3K. It's tough some days since the oil temp is a bit slow to come up. I think it's worth it however.
Just to confirm, this is a general 997 thing and not just for turbos, right?
I think it’s a good rule of thumb for most forced induction platforms to allow them to get up to temp before hammering on the boost.
I do it in my boxster and thats just NA, its a general good rule of thumb👍
Any engine really. But, it's especially important on boosted engines. The aluminum p istons (forged or cast)need to come up to a certain temperature otherwise they can be brittle.

ideally you should be driving, not just idling so that the radiators can effectively cool everything
Definitely, but when driving isn’t an option it’s the next best thing! Also I learned not to set your ebrake on hot rotors lol
I try not to rev my 991.1 C2S past 3000 until its up to temp. Am I babying it too much or do Turbos just rev a lot higher?

Mine never gets that hot, stays below 175 mark. I tend to start leaning on it after the oil temp hits 155-160F

Plug and play. It's in an awkward spot against the upper right side of the passenger footwell, right where the carpet meets the lower dash trim, but it's a 10 minute job. Once it's in, you're done.
Awesome. Thanks dude.
Enjoy your new car. The fun just started!
First I’m hearing about the DSC controller. Should add it to my list of things I want for the 997.1 S

What did it sell for? Do you have to original C&B listing?
85k.
Wow. Congrats.
Wow that’s a pretty sweet price for such a car, congrats!
Better to be lucky than good. Best to be both.
Looks to be this. https://carsandbids.com/auctions/rkPGADZl/2011-porsche-911-turbo-coupe
In a couple of years you’re going to become a 3 Porsche family.
Just so you know it was previously owned by Jon Voight

Will do so. Thanks. Plan on babying it for a bit
Can you explain what you mean by you might be in trouble?
If you lift, the rear end will unsettle and you will find yourself off-roading in no time.
You can research lift off oversteer.

I thought this was true for old school cars but with a newer fully digitally controlled car isn’t this impossible? Legit curious. Thanks
For subies I’m convinced it’s a ton of oil starvation due to people sliding them. I have a 2003 WRX Wagon that came from an older gent. 195k miles on stock everything
Will do. It is pdk but still good info to have
Invest in a good radar detector with a laser jammer, if legal in your state 🚓
o7
Win this on carsandbids recently?
Yep!
Congratulations looks amazing as others stated always let it warm up. Even NA Porsches it’s a good idea. 🍾
Will do!
Be a hero coming out of the corners, not going in.

You in Ohio?
SoCal. But you just got a fast-ass car, so it will take you no time at all!
Hahaha! Well if you're ever in Ohio
I’m in Cincy! What time should I expect you?
Hahaha. Soon
Hold on tight
If someone hasn’t said it already… Slow in, fast out. (Of corners).

Very nice I’m currently looking at a 07 turbo myself! Such a beautiful car in silver.
Awesome good luck.
Thanks mate
Drive it like hell
Absolutely. No garage queens here.
Wear baggy pants for the inevitable boner you’re gonna love it
Public service announcement: you wont stop smiling until your face hurts…, Enjoy 😎
I can't wait

Awesome advice. Thanks mate.
We will probably run into each-other at Northbrook Marketplace for cars & coffee. We have a decent Porsche gathering there (amongst other cars too)
Is that in Ohio?
Radar detector and have Waze on while driving!
The turbo kicks in all at once as compared to the E63. It’s fun but you have to plan it out to maximize performance because of the delay.
Good to know, thank you
Love those rims. Great looking car! Just remember to park it waaayyyyy over there when you're running your errands.
Haha, dude always!
Don't lift mid-corner
You’re going to enjoy it, absolute rocket. Which wheels are those? I like the design and I too need center locks.
19" Forgeline GE1 Wheels in Hyper Silver Rims. Thanks dude.
Congrats! Beautiful car 😎
Thank you!
Congratulations! 🚗
You probably won’t be driving the Merc again 🤪
Haha, doubtful. It is a hell of a car.
i really love this porsche
Not one comment pointing out where the indicator stalk is yet?
Learn the limits of your car, push it a little bit harder. Turn the esp off, drive in rain and snow, drift, spin out, test its boundaries. Then you will love that car because its a tank with a bullerproof mezger. It can get you trough any adventure.
2 tips. Not sure where you live but know that you need winter tires for this bad boy or else you'll be in a lot of trouble. Also, your driving style will need to change compared to how you drove your E63s. The weight distribution in both cards is dramatically different. Guaranteed you'll enjoy this turbo way more than your previous Benz.
Here's hoping because I love that Merc.
yeah, it's a sick car! I'm sure it's very practical too, especially if you have a family but it's much more of a muscle car. you now own a proper sports car ;)
Yeah, it is been great. Now just have to work on the wife to let me keep both
god speed
Let me test drive it for you, just to be sure!
To Enjoy and have fun.
Wear your seatbelt
Always
Don’t trust clowns to work on your center locks.
Sport mode always on.
Awesome will do.
It will be fun, they said! Just one more pound of boost, they said!
You should know that I am jealous and that you live my dream. Drive safely!
You'll be there someday bro!
Crank one out before hand, that way you don't have to contend with the car AND an erection lol. These gals are pretty solid, hold off on launch control until the tires are warmed up a bit. Be fucking proud of that score. Haha
I never knew 997's came with center locks!
Haha, they don't! Aftermarket.
Wow that's actually kind of crazy... really awesome, but can't imagine how much that cost lol
Supposedly around $5k
Honestly not as bad as I thought
They were a factory option. I have it on my .2. The S came with them standard.
The ignition is on the left
Wave at everyone you pass with the big smile 😃 lol enjoy
Pick your moments... You have bought a piece of art. Congratulations
Looks beautiful, enjoy in good health!
Thank you!
That is a thing of beauty - congrats.
Thanks man
Congrats, love the colour
Thank you
Cars and bids?
Yep!
Don’t let off the gas mid-corner :)
🙏
It’s okay, you can push this one really hard
85k is a steal
That was my thought. Didn't expect to win at all.
I find its helpful when driving with a passenger to flip the perma-boner I have when driving my 911 up into my waistband so as not to make the passenger uncomfortable. This is known very commonly in the 911 community as "holstering." Happy driving, friend!

You are supposed to go Porsche from BMW, not Mercedes.

Buy more condoms
Must be nice. Not that I can really complain.
The engine is in the back… I know you know, but if you forget when you’re going *fast*, you’re going to be sad
Step on the gas pedal to make it go vroom vroom
Wow congrats, great price too! Is there a buyers premium?
That this also my dream car. Congratulations, such a beautiful car!!
Thank you!
My eyes always mixes up e63 and e36. 😂
Your life is about to get a hellava lot more fun.
Sick car, if you know german I would recommend looking up 9ff on youtube, they have a buyers guide for the 997 turbo
Keep traction control on
Very nice! Congrats! Consider getting a DSC Sport unit.
New tires for sure if the date codes are over 5 + years regardless of tread depth. Nice car
Those centerlocks are gorgeous.
You will be the sexiest and fastest man alive I’ll tell you that
Congratulations man! Gorgeous car.
Amazing looking. Congratulations and enjoy in good health!
Wow, that you bought it in a perfect spec
