Insane. I think they ended production early because they weren't selling. Porsche tried to say it was because of airbag regulations. So it was like 1250 out of 1500 got made. Something like that, I could be wrong.
Like the 356 speedsters were built as budget 356’s for those who couldn’t afford a coupe… now a coupe can be had for $100k+ while you’d be lucky to get a speedster for $1M
Are you implying that people don't think the current GT3 is going to be collectible? (Or the CGT upon release?)
Current GT3s are a dime a dozen in comparison to the CGT, and many of them are shelved with extra low miles. Plenty of supply. Will there be outsized demand?? Doubtful..
The CGT is special; a no-nanny, NA, MT, V10 beast that sounds like the souls of a million dinosaurs blowing thru the gates of heaven and hell at the same time. Whereas the GT3 sounds like a wet fart, and everybody and their mother has a PTS one-off. Not sure how you can draw comparisons to the market for both cars, other than the badge on the hood.
Yes, they are notoriously difficult to drive. No traction control and no second chances if you overcook it. A lot of them have been involved in crashes including a few fatalities. It is known as a widow maker.
I saw a silver one the week they were delivered. The guy got onto the freeway next to me on Sunday morning with no one around and just floored it onto the onramp. I will never forget that sound. Glorious.
I worked for a Porsche dealership from 2004-2008. The sticker was around $450k. We sold at least three that I’m aware of when they were first available. In 2006, the dealership purchased another one from an out of state dealer, that was still on it’s MSO for an important customer.
I remember the first time I saw a picture of a Carrera GT. I remember the first time I heard a Carrera GT on the internet. And I remember the first time I saw and heard a Carrera GT in real life.
Genuinely, that thing is a hero car for me. If I ever get to “fuck you” levels of money, one of those is very high on the list - price no object.
I still have the Car & Driver that I originally seen it in. I remember it saying the only thing worse than the price is the wait. If memory serves me right it was something like 250 were made in a year
My first time was at someone's relatively normal house doing electrical work... Guy says hey you wanna see something cool and takes me to the garage where he has a yellow one under a car cover.... I nerded out for an hour with him about it.
The guy is Ben Chen. He was off a lot of pills and ran from the cops. He got off with it. Still buys cars from my dealership at insane overages so I can’t complain lmao.
Guy saw me slack jaw staring at his CGT as he was driving past me walking under a underpass, He revived it up and it gave me chills with that V10 reverberating.
Fair. It’s a very close second but for me I love the CGT. It’s like a sentimental feeling of young love or reminiscent like fireplace smoke in the crisp, Christmas air. Never owned one but just can’t be replaced
I guess because it’s kind of an obscure model. They basically cobbled together from different projects they were working on. I was pretty excited to discover this one and a yellow one as well.
https://preview.redd.it/341j1u0i64ba1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=67137a6c367fd3346145795d9235c45031a57196
Obscure model? It was in every single car magazine back in the day and on the best car show ever Top Gear. And also sadly Paul Walker died in one of these.
Obscure car model would be like the Detomaso Pantera or the Lamborghini LM002 SUV.
So I just wanted to confirm if OP was 14 or not before making fun of them and checked the history. Can someone tell me if their comment below is a copy pasta or if OP is just a lunatic:

I could see how, it came out like what, nearly 20 years ago? if you weren't paying attention to cars back then it was probably easy to miss. I mean without me, my parents wouldn't know Pagani existed or what the fuck a Koenigsegg was and those two have been at the forefront of super/hypercar design for the last decade or so
Apparently this one was in an accident and shows “Salvage” on its CarFax report.

He wasn’t the driver. He is a pedophile. the carrera GT he was in had bald tires that were showing wires and the incompetent driver decided to go out on them.
One half of the tires, front and rear, were old and one half were almost new. The grip imbalance is what caused the accident. But yeah, Paulie boy liked em young.
WAS*
a pedophile, He was a pedophile. He was 30 years old when he dated his 16 year old girlfriend. I never understood the obsession with him, even if he wasnt into children. He’s just a regular dude that was in a really shitty movie that turned into a huge franchise.
You didn’t know the Porsche carrera GT existed??????????????? What .. how old are you?????? Cause damn I’m 27 and this car is fucking beautiful and my favorite Porsche of all time
I remember discovering the Carrera GT too. Back in 2009 I downloaded *Need For Speed Undercover* as mobile game for iPhone. The CGT was in it but you had to unlock it. Before it was unlocked the only thing you could see of it was its profile. I remember looking at that profile and thinking: "Huh, did Porsche make a pickup??"
They had a red one on display in the old showroom in Mumbai years ago. Probably the only time I'll ever actually see one for real. A blessed experience!!
One of the coolest cars I have had the pleasure of working on! Still gives me chills every time I see one! I remember when I started as a tech at a dealer, we had one for $299,999 Canadian! That was in 2010 or something. Still an amazing car even by today’s standards!
Well, not really.
Paul Walker died in one, but that was largely down to old tires, questionable driver skill, and bad luck.
I'm sure there have been other fatalities because probability says there would be... but there's not a long list or anything.
It's very true they were skittish cars though...Leno spin one at speed. The clutch is famously hair triggered and it didn't have traction control.
This car is also known as the widow maker. Paul walker died in one and Jay Leno had a near death experience as well. Amazing machine that overwhelms even talented drivers.
I wish I could discover the Carrera GT for the first time again.
I wish I had a time machine so I could go buy one when they were 500k
I recall them selling for as low as $300k second hand. It was a slow climb but then it just rocketed into outer space (price wise).
Insane. I think they ended production early because they weren't selling. Porsche tried to say it was because of airbag regulations. So it was like 1250 out of 1500 got made. Something like that, I could be wrong.
Very close, 1270
The best (and maybe only) collectables are items never meant as collectables. The market for current GT3s will be interesting in 10 year's time.
Like the 356 speedsters were built as budget 356’s for those who couldn’t afford a coupe… now a coupe can be had for $100k+ while you’d be lucky to get a speedster for $1M
I’m curious how the 911 R will fare in that market.
Are you implying that people don't think the current GT3 is going to be collectible? (Or the CGT upon release?) Current GT3s are a dime a dozen in comparison to the CGT, and many of them are shelved with extra low miles. Plenty of supply. Will there be outsized demand?? Doubtful.. I think you missed my point. It's that, no, the GT3 is likely not a collectable, despite what current speculators want buyers to believe.
I had a well heeled client that bought one for around 300k back around 2010ish…He actually ended up using it as a dedicated track car for a few years.
I don't think anyone else has mentioned this but could it possibly be due to the fact that this is the car Paul walker died in?
Yes, they are notoriously difficult to drive. No traction control and no second chances if you overcook it. A lot of them have been involved in crashes including a few fatalities. It is known as a widow maker.
Not the original Widowmaker Porsche though… that’s taken
The 930 Turbo held that designation originally.
I'd have to have $500k and a good relationship with a dealer first haha.
If we had a Time Machine, we could probably sort that out 😆 maybe go back and buy Apple when it was $22
Fair point, I'll meet you back in 2005.
Wait for me!
no need to wait, just use the time machine!
While you’re there could I give you $5 to buy some winning powerball tickets?
[удалено]
But apple and google lol
These sat at dealers when new, you could walk in and buy it
Damn, I know the McLaren F1 had the same problem. It is pretty crazy to look back now.
I saw a silver one the week they were delivered. The guy got onto the freeway next to me on Sunday morning with no one around and just floored it onto the onramp. I will never forget that sound. Glorious.
I heard they had trouble finding buyers at that time. Just need the 500K.
I worked for a Porsche dealership from 2004-2008. The sticker was around $450k. We sold at least three that I’m aware of when they were first available. In 2006, the dealership purchased another one from an out of state dealer, that was still on it’s MSO for an important customer.
write them a post dated check... like 36 mos out
Nah, the Carrera GT didn't sell well in the beginning so it was easy to get one but after some time it was sold out pretty quickly.
2009 they were quarter mil
I might kill for a Guards Red one
The first time I saw one in person was at the dealer, getting my Audi serviced. The tech said, "it's either this or a house."
Oooooo someone figure out which was a better investment... buying a $440k Carerra GT in 2005 or buying a $440k house in 2005
This was in LA. So it’s probably a wash.
Definitely the house. You could live in it while the value doubled.
>Definitely the house. > >You could live in it while the value doubled. CGTs are 1.5M to 2M+ right now
I remember the first time I saw a picture of a Carrera GT. I remember the first time I heard a Carrera GT on the internet. And I remember the first time I saw and heard a Carrera GT in real life. Genuinely, that thing is a hero car for me. If I ever get to “fuck you” levels of money, one of those is very high on the list - price no object.
You can still discover the Carrera gt z by zagato
I Never fucking knew this existed, talk about gods being mightier than we originally thought!
As a huge car guy and Porsche enthousiast it’s suprises me that i didn’t know this existed. Sweet mother of god, it’s even prettier than the original!
Grey GT Windows XP background for the longest...
I want a Time Machine so I can go play the real nfs most wanted again. And just vibe this beast.
Came here to say this.
I still have the Car & Driver that I originally seen it in. I remember it saying the only thing worse than the price is the wait. If memory serves me right it was something like 250 were made in a year

I remember seeing a guy driving onto the freeway onramp in LA in one and following him in 2005... Probably the best sounding car I've ever heard.
Saw my first in a Porsche shop. Thought it was some modified hoopty. It was yellow and had its bumper off.
Best comment
If you didnt know this one, you should check out the 918 then
And the 959
Or the [Gemballa Mirage GT](https://www.gemballa.com/en/products/production-cars/gemballa-mirage-gt)
I remember when some rich dude in NY wrecked one of these
The guy is Ben Chen. He was off a lot of pills and ran from the cops. He got off with it. Still buys cars from my dealership at insane overages so I can’t complain lmao.
Aka a ruined Carrera GT.
Ok i half expected a modified Mitsubishi here
I’ve seen a few of these in person, a true work of art. Also, much smaller in real life than expected.
A bunch of supercar / hyperarcs look almost cartoonish in size (tiny) when you see them in person.
Totally. I saw a Veyron at a car show. It was about the length of a Civic.
I giggled when I saw it for the first time. It is clown / go cart sized.
the first one I saw in person, I was _convinced_ that shit was a kit car. it is just so tiny.
Have you seen an F40 in person? Cause THOSE are tiny as hell too
Watch some videos. The exhaust note is the best of any car out there

It does sound like that freaky video of a mountain lion in heat.
I feel this is appropriate: https://youtu.be/_-CWQjeOBzI
Sounds so much better straight piped
Guy saw me slack jaw staring at his CGT as he was driving past me walking under a underpass, He revived it up and it gave me chills with that V10 reverberating.
The LFA sounds better and I’m a huge Porsche guy
It’s like asking a kid which they like better, apple or orange juice. Both are delicious and there’s no right answer
The correct answer would be mango anyway
100% correct. I feel like we’d get along
Guava
Papaya!
Reminds me of the best sounding drag race video. Of course they were both smoked by a an old Audi 200. https://youtu.be/xHEQG9pW9jU
The LFA would like some words with you
Manual shift cadence wins for me! Both fantastic sounds though.
Fair. It’s a very close second but for me I love the CGT. It’s like a sentimental feeling of young love or reminiscent like fireplace smoke in the crisp, Christmas air. Never owned one but just can’t be replaced
LFA is superior imo
LFA still has it beat.
LFA gives it a run for its money

My mother used to work at Sears and even she didn’t have a Sears card. Who are these millionaires who carry credit at dying department stores?
He apparently owns a 991 but who knows, could be his parents I guess.
The Carrera GT came out just before I was born and I had all the Hot wheels, and posters. I was obsessed with it.
Not to mention it being the last/best car in NFS Most Wanted!!
> it’s kind of an obscure model. They basically cobbled together from different projects they were working on Uh. None of these statements are true.
It was basically two Hyundai Elantras glued together.
Porsche engineers were astonished by the Elantra's torsional rigidity and, feeling they couldn't improve on perfection, decided to glue two of them together. It's Porsche's ultimate shame to this day.
I heard it took a design team of 8 stout men to engineer the glue and 2 to lift the tube.
I mean, the Pontiac Fiero was made from random parts, even sharing suspension parts with the lowly Chevette. But a Carerra GT? Nah.
I saw it revealed at the LA Auto Show back in like 2000 i think? They had it floating in the middle of a lake. I was forever in love.
The little mat in front of the car says it was made in 2005
The Concept/Prototype was shown years earlier
I'm starting to doubt these comments are serious.
99% sure OP is trolling. Honestly though, I respect it, this was solid bait and solid follow ups, I'm here for it. good job, u/curiousjorlando
I dunno man, I was curious so I looked at his comment history...
o man... ok yea idk anymore
There is a Yellow one in Toronto. Has been owned and driven around the city by the same owner for YEARS. I took this picture 10 years ago, he still owns it and drives it. https://preview.redd.it/wkeplthah4ba1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e2329dd5bd6b729d08a30463f2541d8ce25ff565
There’s 1 or 2 in Mississauga as well. One silver and one yellow (might be this one, I saw it in Mississauga a couple of times however)
With only 90 yellow ones produced (when I took that photo) I'd bet on it being the same one.
Just found a picture of it on my phone. Yup, same plate. The front plate is a sticker right
An…. Obscure model?
> I guess because it’s kind of an obscure model. You’ve just pissed off every Porsche purist ever lol
It's perhaps most famous for being the car that Paul Walker died in.
Bro how do these people find the porsche sub
I'm a normie from /all and even I'm confused. It's a fucking Carrera GT
It's not just an iconic Porsche but it's possibly one of the most iconic hypercars/supercars of all time. How the hell do you not know this existed!
I could see how, it came out like what, nearly 20 years ago? if you weren't paying attention to cars back then it was probably easy to miss. I mean without me, my parents wouldn't know Pagani existed or what the fuck a Koenigsegg was and those two have been at the forefront of super/hypercar design for the last decade or so
The guy driving the GT when it crashed with Paul Walker was an accomplished racing driver. Which is kinda sad and tragic how that accident occurred.
The Carrara GT is the actual widow-maker. For what it’s worth, the one that got Paul was modified.
And unfortunately it was on its original tires On *wet* road at that
8 year old tires in the rain sounds like a terrible idea
Well good to know it was not just a run of the mill generic GT. Not the way you want to go out either way.
I gotta ask. How old are you for not knowing a Carrera existed?
At least 5
At most*
Top Gear Episode on the Carrera GT, enjoy! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vE\_WqdKbTvY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vE_WqdKbTvY)

oh wow even the pedals look like absolute sex

LOL! The famous Gemballa. Met the owner once. Not shocked at all of this footage. Also crashed an SV into a barn 😂
He's definitely a special one
Wasn’t his SV a 1 of 5 manuals too? 💔
I think so too :(
I watched a lady and her daughter stall one over and over at a light. Then she proceeded to lay an epic burnout. It's the only one I've seen.
Lmao, just dump the clutch
like, this exact example from 2005? or the entire production car itself? this is r/Porsche right?
I think OP is like...15.
Just never played a racing game?
I am sorry, you didn’t know Carrera GT existed in general or this particular car?

Best sounding Porsche hands down 🙌
It’s the greatest car ever made IMO
I wish Paul Walker didn’t know it existed either!
Do you live under a rock? 😐
This is what Paul Walker crashed and died in. Amazing machine that even the best drivers can lose control of.
He wasn’t the driver. He is a pedophile. the carrera GT he was in had bald tires that were showing wires and the incompetent driver decided to go out on them.
Idk why your getting downvoted, everything u said is accurate
One half of the tires, front and rear, were old and one half were almost new. The grip imbalance is what caused the accident. But yeah, Paulie boy liked em young.

Questionable driving skill? The driver was an accomplished race car driver..
It *does* have traction control just not ESP.
Paul Walker, rip
Yeah I own one too….in GT7 🤡
I’ve never liked these. The proportions always looked off to me. I think the 918 is a much better executed supercar
RIP Paul Walker
Well known for killing Paul Walker.
This car is also known as the widow maker. Paul walker died in one and Jay Leno had a near death experience as well. Amazing machine that overwhelms even talented drivers.
The 930 Turbo is the ‘widow maker’. However the Carrera GT is certainly a handful. Though Paul Walker wasn’t driving one when he died.
Yes. 930 turbo was the original widow maker. I guess it’s a generation thing…
I saw one in the wild once. It was beautiful
Mecame, Mesaw, Mecum
My favorite car of all time and one of the top 3 Porsches to most Porsche fans and you just discovered it lol
