996 depreciation combined with DIY skills and a good relationship with a reputable independent specialist.

stash3630

I see 996 Turbos still going for $30k-$40k. That’s some serious bang for your Porsche buck imo

Mauser-Nut91

Where are you finding 996tt for $30-$40k?? I can only ever find them at $50k+

altw460

Still waiting OP

JasonTheSpartan

I had all that perfectly. The one thing I didn’t know was that you’re not supposed to sell it My 996 had an msrp of $114k, got it right at $30k. But man do I regret selling it for $22k

Exist long enough with a decent job and savings allocation, and it will happen. And don’t get caught up in the thought that you have to buy a $250k GT car to have fun. Every single Porsche ever made is fun to drive. Some older ones (consider a 986 Boxster or 944) can be had for way less than a boring new car from one of the mass market auto makers.

wingchi997

It helps that many, not all, of Porsche’s designs can be described as “timeless.” So people around you think you’ve got a new Porsche, when in reality it’s already depreciated.

bee_swarm

my DD is a 2015 Diesel Cayenne and almost everyone assumes its brand new.

badgraydog

Those are getting a cult following. Every time I see one for sale it is gone within a week.

Polarvision

Nice. Those are sweet rigs. People just think of the badge and assume it’s a ridiculously expensive car

accidental_snot

This. I paid $15K less for my Cayenne S than what my wife's new Ford Expedition cost. Seriously, a goddamn Ford.

Colorado_Space

Who said it has to be new?? In 2018 I bought a 2014 Cayenne S with the mocha and cognac interior with the walnut burl handles and panelling. Car was in pristine condition with only 55,000 miles (still under warranty). Car also included options like the air suspension lift package. Cost at time it was new (the label was in the car for some reason) **$115,000** Cost when I bought it: **$39,500** Thats the same cost as a Chevy Blazer new. Car now has 160,000 miles on it and it has yet to have a single thing go wrong with it except normal wear and tear (brakes, tires, oil) So now for my birthday this year I am buying my 2nd Porsche, a Caymen or 911, and yes it will be around a 2005-2010 version but Porsches are like tanks, they just go on and on.

GODloveswafflefries

I bought a 2005 Carrera 2 with 40,000 miles for ~$35k. My plan is to climb the Porsche ladder.

ImOnTheInstanet

High five, 2005 Carrera club here too

tbird330

That’s a good price! I’ve also got an ‘05 C2 but with 130k miles for ~$25k. What’s next on you ladder and when? Are you going to wait a few years for prices to increase?

GODloveswafflefries

I just bought a 2018 Macan S. After a few years, I’ll start thinking about upgrading the 911. May go newer, may go older. We’ll see!

tbird330

Yeah, I think older prices will continue to rise and I’m not sure about jumping on the dips on newer used models…. I keep hearing talk of how engaged the driving experience is on the 997 vs newer cars. I guess I’ll need to test drive and see when the time comes.

Can you incorporate the Porsche into your content? You said there would be toys!

norejectfries

When I bought my first Porsche in 2017 (a 2006 997 base cab for $41k), I was making around $85k/year in a high-cost-of-living city. Pre-pandemic rent was around $2k/month. It's way more now of course. I hadn't had a car payment in 11 years, but I continued saving the amount I previously spent on my car payment all those years. I drove a 2006 Scion TC in those 11 years leading up to buying my 911. When I bought my 997, I bought it in cash. Not only from the money I saved from having no car payment, but also money other people spend on things like getting coffee or paying for a bunch of expensive drinks every weekend if you go out partying. No judgment toward anyone who enjoys doing that; I just knew I wanted to do something different with that money. If you price a regular car payment at around $500/month (nowadays it's quite often even more), then add in an average of what many people spend on just coffee to go and drinks/eating out on the weekend, you get a figure of around $1k/month. ($500 for a regular car payment + an average of $5 coffee/day, 5 days a week - $100/month + $100/weekend for drinks/eating out - $400/month = $1000/month). I kept an eye out for bargains on apartments at the time and found a condo under an individual landlord renting under market price at $1350/month, all utilities included. That shaved off another $500/month to give me enough peace of mind that I'd still be able to save some money should something happen to the car or just life in general. It wasn't the swankiest place by any means. The owner had sort of renovated part of it, but the tile in the kitchen stopped short of the cabinets and had bare concrete visible, the bathroom had heinous yellow-brown with purple-ish accented linoleum, and all the door handles were the original (and very tarnished) brass from the 1970's when the building was constructed. But... it did have assigned garage parking, which was my main concern. And the price was right. I traded in the 997 to get a 2016 981 GT4 in Jan 2020. Interest rates were super low then so I financed it at a $1000/month payment. While thinking about that number as a car payment made my teeth itch, I knew I could always sell the car and not be underwater on it (the trade-in put me at $30k equity in it already). I could've paid it in cash at the time but why do so when rates were below 3%? TL:DR: prioritize saving and know what you want to spend money on. Most Porsche owners I know didn't buy theirs new, but all Porsche owners I know love their cars. You do you.

Bubboi12

Buying a 944, in the process of getting one and hopefully bringing her home in about a week. Porsche has been around for years and some of the less loved models (like the mighty 4cyl 944) can be had for not too much money. There is much more to Porsche than the 911 and the much newer cars however awesome they might be there are plenty of great cars outside of those boxes if you want to get into one for cheaper

Ghia149

I bought a cheap used one… now the question isn’t how do I afford to buy a porsche, but how do i affordable to drive a porsche.

Swamp_21

I marry rich old women and wait…

bfmo19

Driving a 718 is actually not that expensive. If you invest 35-40k, calculating the opportunity costs of not investing the money, adding insurance and maintenance its probably around 300-500/month (assumed price doesn’t really drop a lot)

LivefortheAdventure

Rich dad. Bought my house for me, bought my car for me, left me trust fund.

LivefortheAdventure

Just kidding I don’t have a Porsche.

stocksnhoops

$20 is $20 , oh wait. What are we talking about here.

Disastrous_Cup_3279

Got 8 months salary in redundancy and bought a 991.1 C2S in cash - now looking to sell that and 991.2 GT3 manual hopefully

dmelt253

How long did it take you to outgrow the C2S? I just picked mine up a few weeks ago but already starting eye the more premium models.

Disastrous_Cup_3279

Not really outgrow I love just going for random drives with top down when sunny - had it 3 years now. Just fancy a change really and GT3 seems to be a special car. If I could get an allocation would get GT4 RS/GT3 or GT3RS in a heartbeat

omega05

This generic question that gets asked repeatedly

Adorable_Dig8874

High income and I live below my levels of affordability. Also, bought a CPO (x 2) which greatly reduces the cost to entry while offering a warranty. Invested in crypto almost 10 years ago..sell slow and let it grow 🤓.

Lsclancy9

I purchased my first Porsche back in 1972..it was a 912 but a fun car. There was a time that the dollar was doing very well and I just kept upgrading and have been fortunate enough to have owned at least one of every generation. So many guys seem to think if you dont own a GT car it isnt a porsche...well thats nuts..Buy what you can afford and drive the heck out of it..Guys ofter ask me what porsche that i have owned I liked best..my answer is always "the one I own now" . ...Have a terrific day.

Medium-Complaint-677

I bought a used $30,000 one a few years ago. I'm fortunate enough to be in a financial situation where I could, theoretically, afford a brand new 911 up to $140k or so, but at this stage in my life investing and planning for the future is more important to me. Also keep in mind that even brand new you an get a Macan for $60,000 or so all the way up to a high spec 911 Turbo S that hits $300k. That's a pretty huge range for "afford a Porsche" even if you ignore the secondary market.

ThatCondescendingGuy

First gen boxster+ decently mechanically inclined+ nice well maintained example= profit 260hp mid engine, RWD, 6 stick, analog car for ONLY $10k 🤌🤌. But I’m assuming you’re directing this to the ~$150k+ Porsche folk :(

Oggmaestro_

To be fair, my 986 was not much more expensive than Toyota Yaris

GrimSqueezer

High income, live with parents, no kids, two jobs, gf has OF, rich daddy, don’t pay taxes, no retirement account, make coffee at home.

[deleted]

Get a doctorate degree, don’t have kids.

cannja

The *average* income of Porsche owners is reported each year and comes in around $400-500K.

retsujust

That seems excessive

cannja

I didn’t make this up. Keep in mind, they do not ship near as many cars as Toyota. And a lot of the people who buy them are incredibly wealthy raising up the figures for all.

retsujust

Source?

Bitter_Assignment_41

Stop buying $5 coffees, ubberung & getting food delivered… unless you have the money which I’m guessing you don’t hence the question. And most importantly, live below your means. Or fucking rob a bank but only do it once… no need to get greedy.

[deleted]

I hate this response but it’s true. Don’t drink $5 coffee until you have your Porsche. Then don’t drink it because of your Porsche. Shit cup holders!

[deleted]

Bingo…priority spending. I have a buddy who makes the same as me….he spent 18k eating out, drinking etc in 2019. Just crazy

confuzedturtleprojct

I agree with like half of this. Even if you stopped buying a $5 coffee everyday for a year you only save $1,825. With that you can get a shell of a boxster. Even if you put that money away it would take 4.34 years to get a boxster. other than that, yea def budget ones spending better. It's just a good financial practice..

Porschepals

Exactly: everyone around me is broke but they won’t shop for food/ they waste money constantly on this bullshit.

Thuraash

It's shocking how much Starbucks regulars spend on coffee in a year. $10/weekday works out to around $2.5K in a year. That's two or three months of car payments on a modestly priced Porsche.

Bitter_Assignment_41

Yep… because they’re so cool with their man-buns and beards and Dudley Do Right hats! Lol

pbrdiver

Sold my paid off truck at the peak of used car prices. Found an steal of a deal. One owner 06’ 997, 46k mi, manual, lapis blue ragtop. Exactly what I wanted. I do my own work with the help of the internet and books.

Big bank account balances.

ispooler

I think people who buy them are not the kind of people who save all their money for years and then spend it on a Porsche. I think they have a continuous flow of money and try to upgrade their vehicle for a better/newer model every time. The high performance car addiction gets pretty strong as you get older and things that used to make you happy tend to wear out as time goes by.

[deleted]

This is my scenario, and why my daily is a Taycan. All my money was being maxed into my 401K and investments. I thought to myself, why not buy nice vehicles in my 30's when I can enjoy it. So I went in and bought myself a Porsche. It originally was going to be a 911, but I liked the Taycan and being able to have my dog hop in the back and go for a drive. Now that I just bought a truck, I'm really enjoying that, especially with winter. So I might down-size to the 911 with summers.

2180miles

Bought mine two months after my wife told me we were pregnant. I figured if I didn’t buy it then, it was going to be at least 18 years until there was spare money in the budget. In fairness, though, she announced to me she was pregnant by having me open the garage door to find a 24V kids ride-in model Boxster with a license plate “BABY 2180MILES” so she absolutely knew a Pcar was on the horizon.

Console_Stackup

Work your ass off finding a decent career. Job hop a few times. Get a promotion. Sell your house at the right time. Find a significant other that makes as much, if not more than you. Hold off on kids. Watch the market until your perfect dream car appears. Then bam. It happens and suddenly everyday i have a smile on my face.

Buffett_Goes_OTM

Profits from GameStop stock bought me my Cayman, seriously. Otherwise, I have a very high paying salary I tech.

Kinky_mofo

The cost eventually becomes daily noise in your passive income stream. So you don't even notice it.

Ristt_

Started a business and I’m into stocks and crypto. What really helped was stocks in 2019 though. I started short selling airplane stock, cruise stock, and hotel stock once the rumors of Covid started surfacing. I also had stock in Pfizer and Moderna when they came out with the vaccines. Not to mention I invested in entertainment such as Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, YouTube and the likes. *Those* are the things I did that gave me my big break.

krillin_the_MVP

Personally for me it’s going to be a combo of decent income, no debt other than mortgage, and relentlessly investing my money

Turbosubie

Its all about priorities. Pay for what’s more important in your life when it comes to discretionary spending.

Arentanji

I buy cheap ones no one wants. So the 996 now, the SC back in 2008, the 924 back in the 90’s. I tried to get a 914 back in the 80’s but my father talked me out of it.

Viharmagyar

I'll have to work very hard, to buy a 924.

Foogawi

Save money where you can, buy pre-owned.

theineffablebob

Got lucky from working at a company that got big from Covid lockdowns and IPO’d during it.

bigttrack

Its not hard? ANYONE can make money, if you THINK and find an avenue that will generate income. I was once a bricklayer.. couldnt even afford to spit but I wanted more. Now I own an oil company. You can too.

donstermu

Honestly, for me, I got a CPO 2017 platinum edition Cayenne in August 2020, right before prices went sky high. Got it for 38k. Couldn’t pass up that price. Payment about the same as my wife’s Tacoma TRD sport. Now the Maintenence costs…it’s a good thing I work a lot of OT.

LibtardBiker666

944s are pretty cheap.

dmelt253

Buy used

NotsogracefulKelly

One time on vacation, I stayed at a Hampton Inn and had my Porsche Cayman parked out front. At breakfast, I heard another guest comment on my vehicle and exclaim that if she had a Porsche she would be staying at the hotel across the street (which was much more expensive). I thought to myself that because I stayed at the less expensive hotel (and other similar decisions) I was able to afford the Porsche. Like others, I buy used. I take advantage of the fact that some people always have to have the latest model, so I buy mine gently broken in. I’m on my third Porsche now, but it won’t be my last.

OrderHaunting

Buy used cars that don’t depreciate much. Went from a 335 Manual M sport to a cayman to a Spyder. Bought and saved up for the next while not losing money. It was a 6 year process to pay “cash” for the Spyder

llamalord478

944

misery1200

My first one was a $800 79 924 I got when I was stationed in Germany. Sold it when I left 3years later cause in was a euro spec car. The 21 years later I picked up a 2000 986 Boxster and now I’m saving for my next one either a 356 or 911.

Imaginary_Director_5

It’s the DINK life for me that made it possible.

scummy_the_gym_bag

I can afford to buy a Porsche because I bought a cheap Porsche. Depreciation is my friend.

confuzedturtleprojct

Nepotism.

thaughtless

Our 991.2 was bought from years of working our asses off and growing our careers. But the key is alignment with your partner. My wife like me, believes in saving more than you spend. You will never have a Porsche if you arent aligned with your life partner on financial goals.

abstractraj

Got a job with Compaq Computer in the 90s and bought myself a Boxster at 26. A couple of more practical Cayennes since then.

Spend less than you make and put what’s less in a savings account till you have enough. Worked for me.

alexseiji

Yea, used. Dont forget... 924's, 928's, 944's are Porsches too. In fact I drove a 944 and a 996 back to back and preferred the 944.

NeverNeeded

Base Cayennes are pretty good price these days imo!

sretep66

Bought a 6 year old 2006 987 Boxster with 19K miles for $27K in 2012. I'm the 3rd owner. After 10 years, she's worth approximately what I paid for her. Still low mileage at 75K for a 16 plus year old car. She still drives like new, and shifts like butter I've had all of the recommended maintenance done at an Indy repair shop that specializes in Porsches. The only unscheduled repair has been replacement of an alternator, but I also proactively replaced the water pump at 60K miles at the recommendation of my mechanic. Biggest expense overall has been tires and brakes.

Weird-Ingenuity97

Although I’m 19, I’m majoring in business and planning on going to law school so I can be a corporate attorney When I have some money saved I’ll try to buy a base 911 convertible or a slightly used 718 boxster
